The Orchid Zone
We are fortunate this month to hear a presentation by Samantha Kha, wife of
Terry Root, and hybridizer extraordinaire from the Orchid Zone. Take a stroll
along the yellow brick road and visit with the inhabitants of the Land of Orchid
Zone, and all its different life forms. We’ll also take a glimpse at the switches
and levers the Wizard of OZ uses to keep the place working like a well-oiled
orchid factory.
Samantha has been interested in growing plants since she was a small child,
raising flowers and vegetables from seeds.This led to her interest in cacti and
succulent plants. Samantha not only grows orchids but also has a very
extensive collection of succulent plants, mainly from South Africa.
The succulent plants led to her discovering orchids over 14 years ago. She
became enamored with the Slipper Orchids early on. She has put together an
extensive collection of Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums, focusing primarily
on the species. Samantha started making Paph crosses about 12 years ago and
has flowered out many of her own crosses. For the past 10 years she has been
making Paphiopedilum crosses for The Orchid Zone, using the Zone’s
extensive breeding collection.
Notice: the speaker will present her topic before the Show and Tell table
is presented. Samantha has to drive back to Salinas after the talk and asked to
speak immediately after announcements.

L a el i a p u r p u r a t a
Native to: Brazil. Laelia purpurata grows high in the tree canopy where it is
exposed to bright light and lots of good air circulation. Native to the regions of
Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
Plant Size: Medium to large-sized plant resembles unifoliate Cattleya plants. The
tall pseudobulbs of Laelia purpurata have one leathery leaf. Overall plant height can
exceed 2 feet (60 cm). Flowers develop in a green sheath on the new growth.
Leaves are medium to dark green in color.
Flower Size: 6 to 8 inches (15-20 cm).This species has the largest flower of all the
Laelias.
Flower Description: Very showy, fragrant, and long-lasting. Flowers of Laelia
purpurata develop on a 12 to 15 inch long raceme and have between 3 to 7
flowers. The individual flowers are well-spaced and make an attractive display.The
typical form has white petals and sepals and a purple lip. There is a great deal of
color variation in the species. There are concolor lavender, semi-alba, white,
vinicolor, delicata, flared and blue color forms of Laelia purpurata with a variety of
markings and striping within the lip.There are many named varieties available.
Bloom Season: Late Spring to Fall (May-Sept)
Growing Temperature: Intermediate to Warm. Grows well with unifoliate Cattleya
species and hybrids.
Additional Information: Laelia purpurata is the most popular of all Laelias and has
been used by breeders to make some of the most beautiful Cattleya hybrids.
In Brazil, there are collectors who specialize in this species and shows dedicated
to the "Queen" of the Laelias. It is the national flower of Brazil.
Many different color forms exist (this is a partial list):
Laelia purpurata var. alba
Laelia purpurata var. 'Schusteriana' (White petals and sepals with dark blue lip and
a yellow throat)
Laelia purpurata var. carnea (Pale pink petals and sepals with a darker hot-pink lip)
Laelia purpurata var. russeliana (Medium pink petals and sepals with a dark pink lip)
Laelia purpurata var. sanguinea (Flowers are the color of red wine and have dark
purple lips)
Laelia purpurata var. semi-alba (Pure white petals and sepals with a colored lip)
Laelia purpurata var. werkhauseri (Flowers have white petals and sepals and a blue
lip)
Laelia purpurata is easy to grow and not particularly fussy in cultivation. Grow in
pots or baskets with fir bark or lava rock or any other suitable well-drained orchid
growing medium. Some growers prefer to use clay pots rather than plastic.

How to Grow Laelia purpurata
Laelia purpurata has the same cultural requirements as the other large-flowered
Cattleya species. It benefits from lots of sun and moving air and a temperature
between 58–60 F (14.5–15.5 C) at night and 80–85 F (26.5–29.5 C) during the day.
It usually begins sending up new growths in late summer and early autumn in the
United States. These growths will be completed by mid-January or early February
and buds will begin to form in the sheath after a short rest period. The plants will
flower from late May into June, depending on the clone.
Give L. purpurata a few weeks’ rest after it flowers by minimizing the watering, but
do not let the pseudobulbs shrivel too much. Once the plant begins to grow, it
requires lots of water, particularly as the growth elongates beyond 6 inches (15 cm).
Laelia purpurata can develop some really large pseudobulbs, often exceeding 20
inches (50 cm) from the base of the pseudobulb to the tip of the leaf, if grown well.

Debwendon Inc is a non-profit organization formed in 2007 to promote and preserve the Brokenhead
Wetland Ecological Reserve, raise public awareness of the historic cultural connection between the

a boardwalk and interpretive trail adjacent to the Brokenhead Wetland Ecological Reserve, and raise

This is a last minute show update. Please read carefully.
Please be advised that the orchid event previously known
as the Express Orchid Exhibition has been ‘re-branded’ so
to speak and is now known as the San Jose Orchid
Exhibition.
The event is now presented exclusively by the Santa Clara
Valley Orchid Society.
The Holiday Inn Express is no longer funding the show as a
client appreciation event. However, a severely discounted
room rate will be offered to those event attendees and
vendors who wish to stay at the hotel over the course of
the event ($39.00 rate plus tax).
All aspects of the event have been retained minus provision
of complimentary food and complimentary room nights.
Only the venues have been altered. Some slight changes to
times based on venue availability for the sub events of the
show had to be made so please make note of changes.
There will be no confusion for those who arrive at the
hotel unaware of the changes as the redirect locations of
the new venues are simply blocks away.
That said the show will continue and will be hosted in San
Jose Japantown and the special events of the show will be

award. Orchids on display for judging will be removed once
AOS Judging has completed and will not be on display on

produced clones of popular orchids that you’d see in retail
stores everywhere. If you buy and bloom out an
outstanding new orchid you could actually take it into AOS
judging, get the award and put a name of your choosing on
it! In many cases, purchasing orchids at this show is like
buying original artwork—and each one is a masterpiece.

special keynote speaker will be the world renowned
Sobralia expert, Bruce Rogers, for whom the species
Sobralia rogersiana is named. This event concludes with a
silent auction of rare plants to bid on with all proceeds to
benefit OCA.
