Retirees Meet Feb. 25 for
Annual Florida Reunion

T’S TIME TO SIGN UP for the 59th Annual Florida Reunion
Luncheon set for Wednesday, Feb. 25 in Zephyrhills.
“It looks as though Michigan may be in for another long,
cold winter,” suggests Bill Romoser, committee co-chair
along with his wife, Anne. “Plan now to come down where
it’s warm, and stop off at Zephyrhills for the annual retirees
potluck luncheon.”
The event will feature keynote presentations by either John
Russell, president and CEO of CMS Energy Corporation and
Consumers Energy Company, or Dan Malone, Senior Vice
President of Consumers Energy, depending on scheduling.
Both have attended the event several times, bringing retirees
up-to-date with company events.

Zephyrhills is located about 24 miles northwest of Lakeland.
Retiree Percy Watson and his wife, Wanda, residents
of Country Aire Village, lead the committee in the park.
Members include Claude and Nancy Horton, Fred Marsh,
Alice Gates, Fred Denham, Ray and Bonnie Brown, Dale and
Donna Borders, Peggy Strauch, Bob and Marcy Brown, Jack
and Betty Braughten and Bob and Carol Counterman.
Hospitality, coffee and tea service begin at 10 a.m. The
keynote presentation starts at 11:15 a.m. Time is allowed
for questions and answers. The potluck lunch starts around
noon.
“Come and join in the fun and fellowship for our reunion
in Florida, and we promise sunshine and warm weather,”
said Romoser. “Well, ‘promise’ is a little strong, but we have
been extremely fortunate in the past.”
“You are asked to bring a passing dish along with your own
table service,” says Romoser. Coffee and iced tea will be
furnished. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.

Forerunners Award Makes
Up Shortfall for College
R
ICK NOBLE DROVE three and a half hours from Indiana
to Augusta to accept an $800 award on behalf of his
son, Levi Eric Noble, who began his education this fall
at Purdue University.
“He was $800 short to pay for his first term at Purdue,” said
Levi’s father, speaking before about 100 attendees at the
annual Forerunners Luncheon Sept. 24. “He was really glad
to hear of this check.”

luncheon. He has been committee chair for the 17 years that
the Forerunners have had the program.
“Jim has spent hours on this program every year,” said
Rhoda Tinkham, past president of the club and committee
member. “He does great work. You would think those kids
were his.”
The Forerunners, the club for company retirees, gave
out $800 scholarships to six students this year, and also
awarded a special $1,000 Richmond Brothers Scholarship.
Noble was sponsored by his grandfather, Ev Beemer,
a member of the Lansing Capitaliers chapter of the
Forerunners.
The awards are given to children, grandchildren,
stepchildren, step-grandchildren and similar legal dependents
of a paid-up member of the Forerunners. A Forerunners
member is eligible for only one award in any given year.
Winners are selected by a blind drawing. The awards can be
used for tuition, books, fees and other academic expenses.
The club voted to award three $600 scholarships for 2015,
and expects to be able to also present the $1,000 Richmond
Brothers Award.
Applications will be available through the Forerunners, local
chapters.

Herb Kops Tells Retirees
About Benefit Changes
Each year in the fall, Herb Kops,
director of employee benefits, visits
chapters of the Forerunners and
brings them up-to-date with pension
and medical benefit changes.

He spoke before about 100 retirees
and guests on Sept. 24 at the annual
Forerunners Reunion Luncheon. On
Oct. 21, he spoke to 150 members
of the Jacksonians. And, as usual,
he stays behind to respond to
questions.
"Herb’s visits are really popular
with retirees, and he’s a wonderful
speaker," said Kitty Foster, event
coordinator for the Jacksonians.
Kops explained that the retiree
health and pension plans are
in “good shape.” In response
to a question, he said that the
Affordable Health Care Act has some
positives and some negatives for
the company, but that the federal
legislation requires a significant
increase in reporting requirements.

A New Energy Policy:
Putting Michigan First
• Create energy-related jobs.
• But the electric energy landscape is about to change
dramatically, both within our state and across the
Midwest.
New federal regulations have set strict limits on power plant
emissions, and more than 60 large, coal-fired power plants
in the Midwest will be retired.
These retirements are expected to eliminate the Midwest's
surplus of power and in some states, create shortfalls –
including a 2,000-3,000 megawatt (MW) shortfall right here
in Michigan.
While building plants to replace this capacity seems like an
easy answer, it is a lengthy process and, without changes to
Michigan's hybrid electric market, could result in unfair cost
shifting from Retail Open Access (ROA) customers to our
bundled utility customers.
This is what has happened in the Upper Peninsula, where
residential and small-business customers are facing dramatic
increases in their power bills after a mining business signed
on with an alternative-energy supplier and left remaining
customers to pay millions of dollars in costs to upgrade a
large power plant.
That’s why we need more certainty as we plan for the
future. A debate over Michigan's next energy law will occur in
2015, and we welcome these conversations. We support Gov.
Rick Snyder's call for a new energy law for the next decade
based on:
• Adaptability: policies resilient to changing federal
requirements.

OR MANY CUSTOMERS, as long as utility bills remain
reasonable, and the lights, air conditioning and heat stay
on, energy is an afterthought.
Until now, this indifference has been okay. Since 2008,
Michigan has had a thoughtful and balanced electric energy
plan allowing us to:
• Invest in energy efficiency to help customers save
money.
• Promote clean, renewable energy sources.
• Streamline regulations to enable investment in power
plants, pipelines and wires.
• Enable environmental controls to improve Michigan's
air and water quality.
• Reliability: fewer, shorter outages and never
experiencing massive outages due to lack of supply.
• Affordability: reducing electric and heating bills so
customers spend less than national averages.
• Environmental protection: A healthier future by
reducing emissions and increasing our renewable
energy portfolio.
We must ensure a sensible, sustainable and flexible energy
plan. As we prepare to enter this debate next year, look

Couple Celebrates 70th
William (Bill) and Sara Patton celebrated their 70th
wedding anniversary on Oct. 1. Bill started working at the
Whiting Power plant in 1954, and in 1976 moved to Bay
City as Supervisor for the traveling maintenance crew. He
retired in 1983.

Keynote at EBG Chairman’s Club Dinner
News Sunday, FOX Broadcasting Company's public affairs
program that airs nationwide each Sunday morning.
She joined NPR in 1997 and is currently the station’s
national political correspondent. She covered six
presidential elections starting in 1992.
This was Liasson’s second appearance as keynote
speaker for EBG and was well received by attendees. The
dinner is only one of the events available for shareholder
retiree members of EBG. Membership includes invitations
to attend EBG events such as Pizza and Policies held
throughout the state of Michigan and the annual EBG golf
invitational, including a legislative briefing and dinner.
“Retirees have been a strong and highly valued voice on
behalf of our grass roots efforts and EBG,” Megan Cary,
EBG Manager, said. “We are going to continue to work
together with retirees, especially in 2015 when energy
policy will be on the agenda for both the state Legislature
and Congress.”
Mara Liasson, contributor to Fox News Channel and
political correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR),
was the keynote speaker for the Employees for Better
Government (EBG) Chairman’s Club dinner on Dec. 10.
Liasson shared her vision of political trends over the next
two years with more than 200 employees and retirees.
Liasson joined FOX News Channel (FNC) in 1997 and
currently serves as a contributor. She also serves as
a panelist on Special Report with Brett Baier and FOX
Cary was appointed to her present post when Carrie
Schneider was named Community Programs Manager in
the Corporate Giving and Education department in March
of this year.

with a group, and I’m sure we’re
coming back here. We didn’t get
attacked by a bear; it didn’t rain,
it didn’t snow, no pagers went
off – it was a great day!”

Wetzel, Ron Jean, Tim Rorring
and Jim Westerhof carded a 63.

progress. He remarked on the
contributions of retirees and
said, “We really thank you for
what you have done for our
company.”
In response to a question, Ford
said he did not see the company
investing in a transmission line
to Indiana now and referred
to interstate projects as “too
risky.”
