come for a visit . . .
The Jackson area welcomes you!
The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau welcomes you to Jackson County. We hope the information in this visitor
and information guide will help you discover many of
the interesting and unique things that can be found
here. There are numerous lodging facilities, restaurants, shopping and outdoor activities available
throughout the area, all of which will help make your
stay unforgettable!
Do you like to exercise? You can walk or bike
Sharon Henning
on approximately six miles of trails around Jackson
and along the Des Moines River or around the campgrounds by Loon Lake
and Pearl Lake or hike the trails at Kilen Woods State Park to the northwest
of Lakefield. If golfing is more your style, choose from a variety of lustrous
greens in the county, including Loon Lake, Emerald Valley and Jackson golf
courses. We even offer Frisbee golf! Swimming can be done indoors at the Jackson County Central High School’s indoor pool or at Heron Lake Elementary
School’s indoor pool. Outdoor swimming facilities are available at the Family
Aquatic Center in Lakefield.
Need a little speed? Fast-paced action happens every Saturday night during
the summer at the Jackson Motorplex. Special race nights include the Spring
Sprint Car Nationals, World of Outlaws and the Jackson Nationals on Labor Day
weekend to name just a few. To find a complete schedule and track information,
visit jacksonmotorplex.com
Interested in history? Our area has a strong commitment to local heritage
and history. The Jackson County Historical Society Museum in Lakefield houses artifacts and exhibits, a microfilm collection of newspapers and genealogical
information. The Jackson County War Memorial is also nearby. Fort Belmont
in Jackson is a re-creation of a civilian fort originally built in the early 1860s
to protect area settlers. Heron Lake boasts a wildfowl refuge that has been
around since 1906 and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church that is on the national
register of historic places!
Have time for a tour? If so, be sure to stop by AGCO’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and experience where innovation meets productivity. Intivity
Center showcases the long history of AGCO and its products, and the tour
takes visitors up close to the machines, through the plant and alongside the
people who put it all together. Intivity Center is open Monday through Friday
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and factory tours are available by reservation.
Interested in relocating? While Jackson County is a great place to visit, the
area also offers substantial opportunities for employment, housing options and
access to good health care and wonderful schools. Each community boasts
small-town living at its finest and can be a welcome change from the hustle and
bustle of big-city life. Many amenities are enjoyed by area residents, such as an
ecology center, biking and walking trails, a countywide public library system,
a “one of a kind” Historic State Theatre that has digital and 3D movie viewing
capabilities and more than 50 social and civic organizations. We also have a
variety of area lakes you can visit, whether you want to camp, fish, boat, swim
or just be by the water!
Feel free to visit our website at jacksonmn.com for more information. You
may also stop by the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce office or give us a
call.
Wishing you a wonderful stay while you are here and safe travels when you
have to go!

Historic Fort Belmont:
Step into history
Can you imagine what it
would be like to have lived
in Jackson County in the late
1800s? Make plans to visit Fort
Belmont this summer and take
a step back in time to the days
of early pioneers. Many settlers
traveled to the area in covered
wagons. An original wagon is
one of the featured
displays inside
the fort’s museum. From covered
wagons to a sod
house, the first settlers were a very
hardy people. Due
to the lack of trees
on the prairie, they
made their homes
from 2-foot strips
of prairie sod. The
fort’s sod house
was built by hand using the
same methods pioneers used
in the 1860s.
A blacksmith shop is located
close to the sod house. You get
the feeling the “first” business
to locate in a settlement was an
important one. The blacksmith
could make anything metal —
nails, machinery parts, kitchen
utensils and horseshoes were
made on the spot. Walk along
the prairie grass to an exact replica of the log cabin and stockade
constructed to protect early settlers. Eleven families (60 to 70
people) crowded into the original log cabin (except for winters)
for most of two years. Since
Fort Belmont was completely
occupied and constructed by
neighbors, it is classified as a
civilian fort, one of only two
civilian-built forts constructed
in the Midwest in the 1800s.
From the log cabin, walk down
into the valley to a one-thirdscale replica of a waterwheeloperated flour mill that uses
wooden gears to stone-grind
flour. Families came from as
far away as Sioux Falls, S.D.,
to the mills operating in the
Des Moines River Valley. Bring
your camera as you head up to building and church rentals. For
the fort tower for a breathtaking additional information, call the
view of the Fort Belmont com- Jackson Area Chamber of Complex and expanding river valley.
Originally built on the south side
of town by Buren and Evelyn
Watland, the tower was saved
from demolition and moved to
the present-day Fort Belmont
in 2010. Buren and Evie were
local history buffs with ties
to the original settlers to the
area. It is a wonderful tribute to
their dream that
the preservation
of Fort Belmont
and local history
continues.
To the south of
the museum you
will find the 1873
Ly s g a r d f a r m house and summer kitchen. Many
displays here tell
the story of everyday life in the
late 1800s and early 1900s. The
1902 Delafield Church was also
an important part of the early
farming community in Jackson
County. It was a place to worship
and socialize. The church is still
used often today for weddings,
baptisms and Sunday evening
services during the summer.
Fort Belmont is open daily,
Memorial Day through Labor
Day. The park is located just
west of Asa Auto Plaza in Jackson at the end of Belmont Lane.
School field trips and special
tours are available, along with

Expansive trail system is fast becoming regionally-renowned amenity
What is fast becoming a renowned amenity throughout
the region, Jackson County’s
sprawling walking and biking
trail system continues to grow.
New legs of trail were added
recently and more miles are
set to be laid in the near future, making Jackson County’s
walking and biking trail system
one of the most expansive and
widely used in the area.
The Nelson Creek Trail runs
along Nelson Creek behind the
Good Samaritan Society Center
and Minnesota West Community and Technical College in
Jackson, then east/west along
County State Aid Highway 34.
The views are breathtaking, the
scenery terrific and the ride or
walk is also challenging, as hills
and valleys make it a workout
for young and old alike.
The trail was the second
constructed in the city of Jackson, joining the Des Moines
River Trail, which traverses
along both sides of the river,
from Dann’s Island Park on the
southern edge of town to the
Ashley Park area, and along
Riverside Drive to behind Sunshine Foods.
Also joining the county trail
system is the Loon Lake Trail,
connecting the county parks
10
along Loon Lake in the southern part of Jackson County.
Recently completed is a segment of trail joining the Loon
Lake Trail with the popular
Mini-Wakan State Park trails in
Iowa, one of the first interstate
trails systems in the country.
Another recent addition is the
Sunset Trail, which connects
the end of the Nelson Creek
Trail at Old Highway 16 to the
Sunset View housing subdivisions in Jackson, then travels
along Springfield Parkway east
to Highway 71.
Future trail plans include the
Fort Belmont Trail, which will
connect the Springfield Parkway Trail with Fort Belmont.
A brand-new segment of trail
was laid in Lakefield just last
year with plans to lay a second segment in the works at
present. A state-authorized regional trail that will connect the
Iowa Great Lakes with Murray
County’s Lake Shetek through
the heart of Jackson County is
also in planning stages.
Jackson County’s trails are
designed for non-motorized
users, including walkers, bikers
and runners, though the state
authorized regional trail may accommodate snowmobile groups
and equestrians.

Airport
Airport
Jackson Municipal
Airport
A state-of-the-art terminal and brand new multiaircraft hangar await visitors and business travelers alike at the Jackson
Municipal Airport, located
on 270 acres just north of
Jackson.
The terminal, completed
in July 2008, houses the
airport manager’s office,
a commons area, an expansive conference room,
a pilots’ lounge and new
restrooms. The facility
replaces the former terminal, constructed more than
a half-century ago, in 1952.
City officials say the
terminal speaks volumes
about the city’s progressive outlook on attracting
visitors and businesses to
the community and surrounding county.
Beyond the terminal, the
airport features a 24-hour
arrival-departure facility
and is in close proximity
to many area attractions,
including dining and lodging, with a courtesy car
available at the airport.
Certified for occupancy
in 2012, the airport’s new
hangar is insulated and
heated to 58 degrees for
creature comfort and also
so air systems work better.
The facility offers 100LL,
Jet A fuel and features full

JCC Middle School
Jackson County
Central School District 440 Main St.
Jackson County Central has
experienced unprecedented
success in the classroom, as
well as in extracurricular activities, since the consolidation of the Jackson and Lakefield school districts in 1997,
and the additional consolidation of the Sioux Valley district
in 2000.
JCC students have proven
their talents in sports, academics, fine arts, FFA and
much more. JCC has earned
state team championships in
volleyball, football, wrestling,
baseball and softball, to go with
a host of numerous FFA state
and national championships.
In fine arts and academics,
the JCC Math League and
Music Listening teams have
placed high at the state level,
while speech, drama and robotics students continue to
perform well year after year.
District voters approved a
$19.6 million referendum in
2001 that paved the way for a
renovation and construction
project, primarily at JCC High
School, including its 500-seat
auditorium, as well as new
technology, science and agriculture departments at the
high school, a fitness center
and auxiliary gym and many
other additions.

comprised of a grades seven
through 12 high school situated in Okabena and preschool
to sixth-grade elementary
school located in Heron Lake.

time providing a diverse curriculum that prepares students
for the next stage in their
