Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
Tahoe loves St. Paddy’s Day!
There were a lot of celebrations going
on all over Tahoe again this year.
McP’s Pub Tahoe had the
popular The Alternates (Tahoe
locals) entertaining the packed-house
crowd. Just walking distance from
the casinos on the California side,
they offer free live music every night.
You can also choose to eat outside
if you like. This is a great locals
hangout.
Murphy’s Irish Pub at the
Rockwater Restaurant in the ‘Y’ area
of town was another all-day packed
event with The Sturdy Beggars
from Reno playing Irish music for
the excited partygoers. They offer
two bars, inside and outside, a pool
table, and real darts. They have
Open Mic on Tuesdays. Thursdays is
Irish Celtic music, with live music on
Friday nights. They have Happy Hour
food and drink specials as well.
Whiskey Dicks celebrated St.
Paddy’s with Tahoe’s own Blue
Turtle Seduction, brought in by Late
Nite Productions. From first starting
at Strange Brew (now Off the Hook)
with a jam, they now have become
a national act that tours all over the
USA. They played the Fillmore in San
Francisco – very impressive. These
local boys are so cool, and their CDs
are getting good airplay. At Whiskey
Dicks, they have a mix of music on
the weekends and on some weekday
nights to enjoy. All styles of music
come to their stage. Late Nite Billy
just started $2 Tuesdays with DJ-Bird
who spins Hip-Hop and Mash-Up.
You’ll hear a variety of music from
Jay-Z and Digital Underground to
AC-DC and Steve Miller. They offer
around 100 beers to chose from,
pool, shuffleboard, Happy Hour, and
food from Fat City Food Company.
Opal Ultra Lounge, inside
MontBleu, had Tahoe’s Saturn Rising
performing for their St. Patrick’s Day
fun. Band members from Waiting for
Tim make up this Jamm-Funk style
music. Special guest on sax for a
few songs was Seth Hall who plays
with Planting Seeds and guest spots
with Lavish Green. Opal offers DJ
music, a variety of live music, Go-Go
dancers, $1 drinks on Thursdays,
Ladies Drink Free on Fridays, and
more.
The MontBleu Theatre had over
1,800 people enjoying Bassnectar.
This raves vibe party had Lorin Ashton
as the DJ mixing extra bass sounds
and drum beats that fused with his
music selections. His remixes are
really cool as he bounces his head up
and down with his long, straight hair
going everywhere. He loves what
he’s creating, and so does the crowd.
MontBleu has great drink prices in all
their bars all the time.
Mo’s Place has Open Mic on
Mondays with $2 drinks – that’s a
big party to enjoy! Tahoe has a lot of
talented musicians who can jam by
themselves or with others. They have
a bunch of pool tables, and great
food and drink specials all the time.
Parties are booked there for all sizes
of groups. They have live music, DJs
and events.
At Harrah's, I was checking out
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. This
little woman rocks big time – always
a great show. She started with The
Runaways in the late ‘70s, and now
there’s a movie about them called,
“The Runaways.”
Rick Springfield continues to
excite the crowd at 60 years old.
From Soap TV star to Grammy-awardwinner, Rick is a true performer.
Yes, women drag their husbands,
boyfriends and dates to his shows –
but then the guys enjoy his show as
well.
Coming to Harrah's April 10
is Pablo Cruise. They have been
playing Tahoe since the ‘70s from
Kirkwood to Sahara Tahoe, offering
hit songs like, “A Place in the Sun,”
“Whatcha Gonna Do?” “Worlds Away,”
“Love Will Find a Way,” “I Want You
Tonight” and more. Original members
Dave Jenkins on lead guitar and
vocals, Cory Lerois on keyboards
and vocals, and Steve Price on
drums have kept this cool sound
together. This music makes you feel
good – go see their show!
April 16-18 brings a Salute to
Frank, Sammy and Dean – a good
trivia show of legends and past music
styles.
April 24, Dave Mason performs
lots of hit songs you’ll remember.
May 1 brings Jonny Lang. This
kid can wail on the guitar and sing
Blues-Rock at its finest. We love
when Jonny comes to Tahoe – always
a very enjoyable great show!
VEX Nightclub has sexy Go-Go
girls on Fridays and Saturdays, and
it’s always a party atmosphere.
Cabo
Wabo
offers
live
entertainment, and food and drink
specials. Sammy’s place is a good
time.
The Improv at Harveys, with
new comics each week and host
Howie Nave, is always good for a ton
of laughs.
And remember, make time to
drive around the beautiful lake. Have
fun – you’re in Tahoe!
Howie Nave
COMEDY FROM THE MOUNTAIN
I think spring has finally arrived
only because the snow seems to have
subsided judging by the flowers trying
to bloom. I don’t know about you but I
loved the extended winter we had. And
the wind….wow! I don’t know what it
is but there’s just something about the
wind blowing through the tall trees that
makes it so peaceful up here. Maybe
it’s also because the wind (when it hits
75mph and over) drowns out all the other
noise normally one hears in a bigger city.
Or maybe it drowns out the bad news
that seems to be all over the airwaves.
There’s just something calming about
the wind that makes me feel at ease.
Maybe that’s what I’ll have them put on
my grave: “Howie was like the wind. Loud,
never stopping to take a break and always
knocking something over. “ Either that or
“Howie-what a blowhard. “ Maybe I’ll need
to headstones.
Speaking of windy comedian Rocky
LaPorte hails from the Windy City the
week of April 7th through the 11th. My
best bud and former Chicago truck
driver and dock worker Rocky started
his standup career back in 1988. After
winning some local comedy competitions
Rocky went on to win The Johnnie Walker
National Comedy Competition beating out
over 1100 contestants in 10 cities. He
then went on to do numerous Television
shows like Cheers, Pat Sajak, Comic
Strip Live a CBS Pilot titled “The Rocky
Laporte Show” and his very own half hour
special on Comedy Central. That special
by the way has been voted as one of the
best consistently It’s also funny and partly
pathetic that when Rocky finally got to
do The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as
he puts it, “Only16 years of sweat and
toil, But who keeps track of that kind of
stuff?” Rocky received a standing ovation.
Well yeah?! He’s performed overseas
for the troops, released a very funny CD
entitled, “Who Knew?” and has appeared
in several top notch motion pictures. He
mentions that he’s most proud of the fact
that he was voted one of the funniest guys
in his class at a Recent G.E.D. reunion.
At the Las Vegas Comedy Festival Rocky
received the “Best Male Club Comedian
of the Year “ presented by fellow comics
George Wallace and Andy Kindler. 40 of
the top comedy clubs around the country
were polled for their favorite male and
female comedians and Rocky always
came out on top. Oh, that was for Best
Male Comedian too just to avoid any
confusion.
I think his popularity in part is because
of his every guy kind of attitude. He’s very
blue collar and down to earth. He has a
wry sense of humor and tends to look at
the world as a casual observer lamenting
on “How could this possibly happen to me
folks?” kind of attitude. It works, it’s real
and it’s all Rocky.
Performing with Rocky is Marc Price
who believe it or not has done way more
than that of playing Skippy on the NBC
comedy series, “Family Ties” back in
the 80’s. He’s written, co-produced and
starred in many television productions
and in fact spends more time these days
behind the camera then in front of it. He
also loves to ski so what a perfect time to
be up here too.
One of my other favorite comedians
is headlining here April 14th through the
18th. John Henton loves Tahoe and
actually represents the South with his
classic, “What, what? Represent I say
South Tahoe keepin’ it real.” Lots of folks
know Henton from the Fox hit television
series “Living Single” and also the ABC
comedy “The Hughleys.” Through the
lovable and sensible character alone of
“Overton Wakefield Jones,” Henton found
a loyal and endearing following. Born
and raised in Cleveland, John never
entertained the thought of a career in
comedy. In 1982, while working during
the day and studying computer science
at night, he was urged by a co-worker
to try his jokes at a local comedy club’s
amateur night. By his second night, he
won the amateur night contest and began
stand-up part time. John made the move
to Los Angeles in 1985 and by 1988
started his stand-up career full time. One
of the biggest highlights of John’s career
was performing on “The Tonight Show
with Johnny Carson.” That was huge
folks because not only did John get on
just before Carson retired but Johnny
called him over to the couch which, in
comedy only meant that Carson loved
his act but that he would be working
full time as a stand up right after that.
In fact Carson asked him if he had an
agent. Henton replied, “No” and Carson
mugged, “Well you will after tonight.” After
that Henton made appearances on “The
Arsenio Hall Show” and “Bob Hope’s
Young Comedian’s Special” as well as
returning to “The Tonight Show with Jay
Leno.” Appearing with Henton is another
favorite, David Gee. He was my mentor
when it came to hosting which David
loves doing but he also loves being in the
middle or ‘sweet spot’ as we refer to it so
it’s always an honor bringing Gee up after
I have done my hosting duties.
Howie Nave.

Fly Fishing
Sun, sun, sun then snow, snow,
snow! Welcome to a fairly normal
Spring… Just when you think Summer
is kind of here and the fishing has
been great we find ourselves right in
the middle of Winter again! Not that
the fishing gets worse it’s just that the
comfort level gets down right horrid at
times. Actually the fishing tends to get
better in these conditions, on cloudy
days they eat dries and on sunny
days they eat nymphs and sometimes
they eat both and everyone is happy
in fishing land. Personally I prefer the
sunny days when they eat dries and
luckily we have had a few of those
during the last month and I am sure
it will continue into the month of April
as well!
Have you caught a big fish on a
tiny fly lately or maybe a big fish on
a BIG FLY? There are two times a
year when this tends to happen right
now and in the Fall. BIG Stones,
little Baetis, little Midges and the
Caddis are on there way as well. So
get out and fish it while the going
is good and enjoy some of the best
fishing of the year. If you are into
moving water you need to fish one of
these two rivers, The Little Truckee
River or The East Walker River both
being tailwater fisheries which means
they are controlled flows and not as
effected by the runoff and tend to
fish incredibly well during the month
of April. The East Walker River has
about 15-20 miles of good fishing
with some of the best just bellow the
Dam at Bridgeport Reservoir as well
as in the Nevada sections called the
Rosachi Ranch. If you really want
to try something a bit out of the way,
head for the Elbow section about ten
miles below the Nevada State Line.
The Elbow is stocked on occasion
and sees far fewer flies then the
previously mentioned sections and
can be incredible when fished with
Dry Dropper set ups with a Stimi on
top and a Baetis Nymph below. Don’t
be fooled by the regulations that allow
fish to be kept, the same fish that we
catch in California swim through this
section as well and rarely get fished
this time of year.
The Little Truckee should have
lots of fish this year with the flows
fairly high this spring which allows
for a bunch of fish to come into the
system. Most of the fish are a pretty
good size and have already been
eating quite well. Expect to see a
fair amount of pressure on the two
miles of water between Boca and
Stampede but if you pick the right
kind of day to fish this section the
crowds tend to be lighter. My favorite
days are when the clouds roll in and
it is snowing or raining which tends
to keep most anglers off the water.
The dry fly fishing also excels on
these kinds of days and keeps the
Baetis popping as well as the Midges!
Watch for Redds and try not to disturb
them if at all possible.
My favorite Springtime Stillwater
is Indian Creek Reservoir!
The
Blood Midges are back and the fish
are eating them off of the surface
whenever the winds are down. If you
like fishing from a tube, fish a Krystal
Bugger with a Blood Midge Dropper
Victor Babbit
on a full sink line, stripping slowly
which can produce an incredible
strike and on occasion the fish will
eat the flies on the sink too. Hang
on, there are some really big fish in
this lake again this year and I have
heard of more than a few anglers that
have lost rods by not paying enough
attention while trolling from a boat or
a float tube!
These are just a few of the
wonderful places we fish this time
of the year and if you were to draw
a 2 hour circle around the South
Shore area of Tahoe you would find
hundreds of fisheries that are all fun
and even some that you won’t see
another angler fishing!
For more information on these
fisheries or any others in our area,
stop by the shop for a detailed map
and a helpful hand at getting you into
fish, if you are not having fun fishing
we are not doing our job! Tahoe
Fly Fishing Outfitters located on
Highway 50 next to Midas Mufflers
and just 3.5 miles from the Casinos.
Guide service available 365 days a
year!
Another Late Night with LateNiteBilly
Well, I am still on the road and
loving every minute of it. I spent the last
two weeks of Spring Break in touring
up and down the state of Florida and
do I have stories to tell!
Now let’s talk about the April shows
I have set up for you all in South Lake!
On Sunday, April 11th at Whiskey
Dicks it’s the return of So. Cal’s Punk
Rock Miscreants – Guttermouth!
Guttermouth is an American punk rock
band formed in 1988 in Huntington
Beach, California and currently
recording for Volcom Entertainment.
They have released nine full-length
studio albums and two live albums
and have toured extensively, including
performances on the Vans Warped
Tour. They are infamous for their
outrageous lyrics and behavior which
are deliberately explicit, offensive and
intended to shock, though usually in a
humorous and sarcastic manner. This
behavior has sometimes resulted in
high-profile problems for the band,
such as being banned from performing
in Canada for a year and leaving the
2004 Warped Tour amidst controversy
over their political views and attitudes
towards other performers. Opening the
show is The Darlings from Southern
California and Ninja Slaugterhouse
from South Lake Tahoe.
Next up on Friday, April 16th at
Whiskey Dicks, the return of Lou Dog
Trio, a Tribute to Sublime. So, to
keep it simple, if you love Sublime and
I know you do, be there. These guys
are the closest thing you are going
to get these days to the real Sublime
experience.
And lastly for the month of April,
an underground Hip-Hop showcase
that will blow your mind. That is, if
conscious and positive creativity appeal
to you. Aceyalone from Freestyle
Fellowshop and Sunspot Jonz from
Living Legends will take the stage on
Sunday, April 25th at Whiskey Dicks.
Eddie Hayes, better known by his
stage name Aceyalone, is an American
rapper. He is a founding member of the
Freestyle Fellowship. Apart from his
role in Freestyle Fellowship, Aceyalone
is also a member of Haiku D’Etat (with
Mikah 9 and Abstract Rude) and The
A-Team (with Abstract Rude), and
he is a co-founder of Project Blowed.
After releasing a pair of albums with
the Freestyle Fellowship, To Whom it
May Concern… and Innercity Griots,
as well as the 1994Project Blowed
compilation, Acey signed to Capitol
Records and released his highly
acclaimed solo debut All Balls Don’t
Bounce in 1995. He returned three
years later with his second album,
A Book of Human Language, a
collaboration with producer Mumbles.
In 1999, he released a self-titled group
album with Haiku D’Etat. In 2000, The
A-Team released their first album as a
duo, titled Who Framed the A-Team?.
Acey returned solo again in 2001 with
his third solo album, Accepted Eclectic.
In 2002, the Freestyle Fellowship
returned after 9 years for the release of
their third group album, Shockadoom.
2002 and 2003 saw two more solo
releases, Hip Hop and the World We
Live In and Love & Hate and another
A-Team album (’Lab Down Under’). In
2006, Aceyalone released two more
solo projects, first, Magnificent City,
a collaboration with producer RJD2,
followed by Grand Imperial. Sunspot
Jonz grew from the East Oakland
soil that kills so many of its own
seeds. Resilience, intellect, and the
gift of gab allowed him to overcome
more challenges in his youth than
most people face in a lifetime. In the
environment in which he lived, and so
many of the homies died, Sunspot kept
the original vision of Hip Hop alive,
with a four track and dream, hustling
tapes on Telegraph Ave., guerilla style,
a warehouse livin’, Top Ramen eatin’
savage, sending a different message
than all the other MC’s in the game.
His life experience made him know that
any human being can control their own
destiny. Any human being can choose
to ignore the negativity that society
attempts to force upon us, and choose
a different reality. Sunspot Jonz is a
visionary. Underground means against
all odds. A revolutionary, a pioneer,
Sunspot Jonz, can never be stopped.
So, whatever it is that you like:
Punk, Reggae, Ska or Hip-Hop, we
have something for you this month!
Also, don't forget, every Tuesday is $2

‘The Buzz’ - Harrah's - Harveys
Spring and April are here and
Harrah’s Lake Tahoe is showering
great entertainment every weekend in
the South Shore Room. The hilarious
musical send-ups of The Dan Band
open the month on April 3, followed by
one of Lake Tahoe’s all-time favorites,
Pablo Cruise. And yes, David Jenkins
is still playing lead guitar.
Next, it’s three nights of the
Rat Pack when “Drinkin’, Singin’
Swingin’: Salute to Frank Sinatra,
Sammy Davis, Jr. & Dean Martin”
hits the stage April 16, 17 and 18 with
the classic music, comedy and highjinx of these legendary performers.
Of course the real Frank, Sammy and
Dean all played the famed South Shore
Room back in the day. Former member
of Traffic and Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame inductee Dave Mason returns
to Harrah’s for one night only, April 24.
Like a fine single malt Scotch, Dave just
gets better and better.
Better and better also describes
the music and playing of guitar phenom
Jonny Lang. He and his band are
so tight they seem to communicate
telepathically, and their version of Stevie
Wonder’s “Livin’ for The City” almost
makes your head explode.
Sammy Hagar & The Wabos
return to Tahoe to celebrate the sixth
anniversary of his famed Cabo Wabo
Cantina on May 7 and 8. These shows
are currently sold out, but the “Sammy
Scene” in and around Harrah’s and
Harveys that weekend is something to
behold. The cool, calm and completely
hilarious comedy of Louie Anderson is
on display as the ubiquitous game show
host takes the stage May 15.
Another Tahoe favorite and genuine
blues guitar master, Elvin Bishop
returns to Harrah’s on May 22. Elvin’s
been playing his unique blend of
Oklahoma, West Coast and Chicago
blues ever since first joining the
Butterfield Blues Band back in the ‘60s.
Put on your “Travelin’ Shoes” and head
over to the SSR for a show guaranteed
to be “Big Fun.” It could be magic or it
could be the timeless music of Abba that
makes “Abbacadabra – the Ultimate
Abba Concert” one of Tahoe’s most
popular shows. It returns for a threeday run, May 28 thru 30.
Now for something completely
different, VEX Nightclub, inside the
SSR, will present the Playboy Clubs’
50th Anniversary Party on Thursday
night, June 10. Only 50 clubs around
the globe have been selected to have
Playboy parties that night, the exact
date of the opening of the first Playboy
Club fifty years ago in Chicago. Playboy
Playmates and a Playmate of the Year
will be in attendance, and a Playmate
contest are just part of the fun in store
for the big celebration.
Celebrity chef Guy Fieri hits the
stage next with his Guy Fieri Rock ‘n’
Roll Tour in the South Shore Room on
June 11, followed by classic rock greats
Blue Öyster Cult, Saturday night June 12.
The 2010 Lake Tahoe Summer
Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor
Arena kicks off the season a little earlier
this time around with our first big concert
scheduled for Sunday, May 30, right in
the middle of Memorial Day Weekend.
That night, country star Tim McGraw
brings his “Southern Voice Tour” to
Tahoe with sensational opening acts
including Lady Antebellum and Love
& Theft.
Other Summer Concert Series
shows confirmed thus far are: Chicago
/ The Doobie Brothers (June 19);
Sugarland (July 10); and Rascal Flatts
by John Packer
(July 16 and 17). More exciting shows
will be announced soon.
Across the street at Harveys
Cabaret, The Improv presents two
new comedians every week. In April,
laugh out loud with Rocky LaPorte and
Marc Price (April 7 – 11); John Henton
and David Gee (April 14 – 18); Allan
Havey and Mike Pace (April 21 – 25);
and Scott Record and Carrie Snow
(April 28 – May 2). In May, the laughs
continue with Chris Spencer and John
DiResta (May 5 – 9); Jeremy Hotz
and Lowell Sanders (May 12 – 16);
Wendy Liebman and Chipper Lowell
(May 19 – 23); and a special, oneman-show starring Charles Fleischer
(May 26 – 30). Funnyman, bon vivant
and man about town Howie Nave is
the longtime host and emcee of The
Improv. The Improv at Harveys is on
stage Wednesdays thru Sundays at 9
p.m., with two shows on Saturdays at 8
and 10 p.m.
