Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
Dave Matthews Band put on
an exciting music party at Harveys
Outdoor Arena to a sold out crowd.
With hits like, "What Would You Say",
"Crash", "Ants Marching", Satellite",
Where Are You Going", "The Space
Between", and many more, Matthews
has had a huge following over the past
20 years. They mix rock, jazz and jam
to their style of music. Special guest for
some of the songs was Roger Smith
from Tower of Power on keyboards.
Roger played all over Tahoe in the 90's
and was a regular at The Christiana Inn
where the Himmel Haus is located now.
Smith is on Matthews new CD. Roger
also has his own Jazz CD's to check
out.
Country music stars Brad Paisley
and Chris Young brought their tour
to Harveys Outdoor Arena that also
included Lee Brice. Paisley has won
many awards and has performed at the
White House. Paisley's "Old Alabama"
with country group Alabama, was a cool
tribute to them. He played Van Halen's
"Hot For Teacher" that was fun. Chris
Young already has some number one
hits and looks to be a big country star.
The crowd really liked when he sang
"Save Water, Drink Beer" song. Young
also did a ZZ Top tune that was cool.
The band fun. who burst into the
main stream in 2012 with hits "We Are
Young", "Carry On", and "Some Night"
had their young fans all happy to see
them at Harveys Outdoor Arena. Their
indie pop-rock style has a high energy
sound of its own. Nate Ruess, Andrew
Dost and Jack Antonoff with talented
musicians has got a lot of radio air play on
their songs. This year at the Grammy's,
they won for Best New Artist and song
of the year with "We Are Young". They
played the Rolling Stones song, "You
Can't Always Get What You Want" and
lead singer Nate Ruess has a bit of Mick
Jagger performer in him. Their success
is also big in other countries that they
have toured. The band members came
to Tahoe a few days early to go boating,
ride wave runners and go golfing.
Cabo Wabo - Sammy Hagar's place
- inside Harveys, has entertainment
nightly with live bands and DJ's. Get
some great Cantina food and drinks
and it's a cool place to watch football
with specials. The Garage Boys just
played there with classic rock tunes
and new bands come throughout the
week. Locals bands like Cash Only and
Jesse Kalin also perform there.
The Improv at Harveys with host
Howie Nave has new comics each
week. They also do some funny bits
on Howie's Morning Rush radio show
on KRLT 93.9. Harrah's has in their
showroom October 12th Blue Oyster
Cult, October 19th The Blind Boys of
Alabama, October 26th Leon Russel,
November 2nd Gov't Mule, November
30th Tower of Power. This is a great
variety of music to check out. Tower
of Power has never stopped touring
in over 40 years. They are a Tahoe
favorite and sell out everywhere they
go. Their funk-soul sound makes you
feel so good allover. I love these guys!
Harrah's Center Stage with "Arty
the Party" on Friday and Saturday is
always a good time with all your favorite
songs. Illusion Fusion with magician
Alex Ramon at Horizon is celebrating
their 500th show this month. All ages
enjoy this very entertaining magic
show. The Himmel Haus celebrating
Oktoberfest started on September 20th
and continues through October 4-6.
Camp Richardson's Oktoberfest is
October 5-6. Have some German beers
and food with your fun. MontBleu has
Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon
rangers featuring Eddie Brickel
October 5th in their showroom. A music
and comedy night that is sold out. Blu
Night Club has Shaggy November
19th. A.K.A. Orville Richard Burrell is
a Jamaican-American pop, hip-hop,
rapper singer with hits "Boombastic", "It
Wasn't Me", "Angel" and more. He's a
great show and he served in the United
States Marine Corps. The 35th Annual
Freakers Ball is Saturday October
26th. Four parties include Opal Ultra
Lounge, Blu Nightclub, Convention
Center, Haunted Zone and Party Pit.
This will sell out! Peek Night Club and
Whiskey Dicks will also be a lot of
fun for Halloween parties. Next month
Tony Drew, the publisher and I will
put together the Halloween Pictorial
Issue for November. The costumes
are creative, unique, sexy, topical
and unreal. Check out all the football
specials, music spots, boat cruises,

Comedy From The Mountain
It’s a trip knowing that, as the leaves
change and it cools down substantially
we’re going to be into the holidays and
hopefully a s**tload of the white stuff.
October is my favorite month (even
though winter is my favorite season). I
think in part because Halloween for me
kicks off the succession of holidays that
follow even though retail outlets had had
their Christmas stuff up since August. I
relate to October best I think because
as the leaves change their colors I’m
reminded that my hair is changing color
(although that happens in all of the
seasons). I also like the shoulder season
in the latter part of the year because
locals seem to be in a happier mood
knowing that just around the corner we’ll
be welcoming the white stuff (and I don’t
mean just the tourists aether).
Jimmy Shubert has never been to
our room but he is one of the funniest
mofos I have ever seen! He’s not just a
comic but an actor who has appeared in
both film and television. He also host his
own Radio show on Sirrius/XM 97 Blue
Collar Radio called Shubert’s Alley. Off
the top of my head I remember seeing
him on HBO’s “Entourage” and CBS’
“The King of Queens” and more recently
“2 Broke Girls.” He played Betty White’s
neighbor in an episode of “Off Their
Rockers” on NBC and even appeared
on Disney’s hit show, “Zeke and Luther.”
He’s worked with heavyweights in the
biz including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie,
Charlize Theron, Katie Holmes and Robin
Williams. So many credits! His other
work includes being in “Barely Legal,”
“Heist,” “The Loop,” “Rude Awakenings,”
“Angel,” “Lucky,” “New Car Smell” and
“Youth In Revolt.” He was even in one
of my favorite movies, “The Italian Job”
which starred Mark Wahlberg, Charlize
Theron, Edward Norton, Seth Green,
Jason Statham, Mos Def and Donald
Sutherland. Jimmy is hilarious and pure
observational comedy with a biting,
sarcastic almost caustic wit. Appearing
with Shubert is another comedian/actor,
Suli McCullough. Suli is a great writer
and being paired with Jimmy it’s like
two headliners. A great week October 2
through the 6th.
What? Another first timer to Tahoe
at our comedy club? Yes! Like Jimmy
Shubert Jeff Dye is also an actor as
well who hosts the popular MTV prank
show, “Money From Strangers” and
also stars in MTV’s popular spinoff
show “Girl Code.” And if that wasn’t
enough he’s also done more stuff on
MTV (please don’t say it was being a
ghost writer for Snooki). LAst year he
hosted MTV’s “New Year’s Countdown
Live From Times Square” with Snooki
and JWoww which was viewed by over
3 million and appeared on the premiere
of TBS’ “Who Gets The Last Laugh?”
with Bill Bellamy and Kunal Nayyar. Jeff
had his own Comedy Central special
and hosted ABC’s “Extreme Makeover
Home Edition” as well as being a finalist
on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.” The
Seattle native also won the Giggles 10th
Annual Laff-Off which lead to Jeff being
selected to perform at the prestigious
Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in
Montreal. This month he’s at the Cabo
Comedy Festival where Improv founder
Budd Friedman will be honored with
a lifetime achieve award this being
The Improv’s 50th year in operation.
Appearing with Jeff is Brandt Tobler
yet another first timer to Tahoe. Really
looking forward to this week, October
9th through the 13th experiencing two
new acts up here.
If you like true, improvisational
comedy than The Stagebenders
are just what you ordered. The
improvisational duo consists of Kim
Thomassen and Gust Alexander who
are like this well-oiled machine bouncing
off one another in perfect succession
as the audience shouts out situations
to put the two of them in. What’s that
you say? The audience is telling what
the headliners to do? Yep. Just like the
popular ABC television series, “Whose
Line Is It Anyway?” the audience
suggests (okay yells out) scenarios to
The Stagebenders and they create the
scene and have to be funny on the spot.
It can get really interesting sometimes
especially if some of the audience
members have had a little bit too much
in the libations department. ‘Benders
Kim & Gust have an extensive theater
background and both were naturally
funny on stage. Neither of them ever
thought they’d wind up being a duo but
on a lark were paired together as part
of a sketch comedy workshop and they
Howie Nave
haven’t parted ways since. Between the
two of them their television appearances
include “The Tonight Show with Jay
Leno,”
ABC’s “America’s Funniest
People,” “MTV’s The Jenny McCarthy
Show,” filmmaker Roger Nygard’s
“Trekkies 2” and the Coen Brothers’
“The Naked Man.” They have been
featured in national publications such
as Esquire Magazine and, believe it or
not, Mechanical Engineering. When I
asked Kim how they came up with their
name he said ,”We were doing a show
in our home state of Minnesota at this
old theater and the stage literally started
bending!” Okay, to give them the benefit
of the doubt it was an old stage with old
wooden planks but let’s not kid each
other: these two are big boys. And, truth
be known when I introduce them on
stage I’ll often say (after listing some of
their impressive credits), “They’re truly
the last of the fun comedy duos and I
like to refer to them as 700 pounds of
Las Vegas showgirls rolled up into two,
bald, fat chubby guys.” Appearing with
The Stagebenders is Joel Lindley so
make sure you pop on down October
16th through the 20th.
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/
manager of The Improv @ Harveys
every Wednesday through Sunday
and also hosts his own morning show
(“Howie’s Morning Rush”) on KRLT
93-9 The Lake M-F 6-10am which
also streams online so you can log
on anywhere all over the planet and
catch Howie’s radio show. He also
writes a weekly comedy column for
Action Magazine. You can follow him on
Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/

Fly Fishing
Not much for Indian Summer so far
and the cooler temperatures are good for
fishing! October should be some of our
best fishing this season and seemingly
we have enough water to keep the fish
happy. This is the time for BIG Flies and
Small Flies, Fall Caddis and Tricos are
on the menu! Check out the report and
stop by the shop for more details!
Truckee River (Ca) Fishing
Report- Above the 267 Bridge: Flows
are much lower for the fall and the fishing
is good. Stones are still around, Caddis
are sporadic, Trico’s and October
Caddis starting to move and Hoppers
are waining. Look for Western Drakes
and Streamers will take a fish or two as
well especially early or late in the day
and the Bigger the better! Crawdads
like the lower section should be good. Year round section (CA) below
267 Bridge: The flows are a little
low until you get below Boca but
good for sight fishing in the lower flow
areas. Western Drake, Golden Stones
and Crawdad imitations are best. Fall
hatches are here already with Tricos
and October Caddis on the move. The
dry fly fishing has been great some days
and the Nymphing good on most days. The Glenshire area, below Prosser
Creek and just above the Boca inlet, has
been good. Surprisingly the fishing in
the Herschdale area has been good as
well even with the higher flows. As the
water cools the fish start spreading out
again and look for the bank feeders.
East Carson River Fishing
Report – The catch and release
section Below Hangman’s Bridge: The flows are low and the fish are looking
up, the further downstream you get the
better. Stones have been coming off in
the evenings and the fish are also eating
small PED Mayflies. The fish seem to
have moved into their normal spots for
the fall and are eating well. Things are
starting to cool down so expect to see
the fishing improve during the mid day
sessions. Lots of fish in the long holes!
Above Hangman’s Bridge: Look
for areas where the stocking truck can
get to and there should be fish! Hatches
have been good with PEDs, Tricos,
Stones and Ants. Fish a Stimulator
with a dropper Nymph or pull a Bugger
for best results. Fishing well from
Hangman’s Bridge up to the Highway 4
Bridge. The Resort areas as well as the
Campgrounds have been good. Look
for fish above the Highway Four Bridge
as well and if you want more of a wild
trout experience fish above Wolf Creek
in the Backcountry!
West Carson River Fishing
Report – The Pocket Water sections
in the Canyon are fishing the best from
about Sorenson’s down stream to the
Woodfords area. The meadow has
been good but with the lower flows the
fish tend to be spooky. There is a lot
of Little Cutthroat in the system with
a few bigger Rainbows planted by
Alpine County. Hoppers, Small Mayfly
Imitations, Ants and Caddis on the
Surface. Subsurface: Copper Johns,
Flashback PT’s, Yellow Sally Nymphs
and Buggers. The Blue Lakes road
area can be a lot of fun for smaller fish!
Little Truckee River Fishing
Report- Baetis are starting to show
and the drakes are gone. Best bets are
Beetle and Ant Patterns. Hoppers are
still taking a fish or two especially with a
dropper. Look for cloudy days for great
BWO action. Streamers will take a fish
this time of the year as well. Fish small
Baetis Nymphs and Midge Nymphs
under your big dry. Victor Babbit
Tahoe Area Stillwaters:
Indian Creek Reservoir: The fishing
has picked back up and the weeds will
start to subside as things cool. Don says
there are no fish around the shallow
end taking Midges so beware. Damsel
Nymphs and Blood Midges are a good
bet and float tubes are almost a must. Buggers always work well in Brown and
Olive. Caples Lake: Coming into my
favorite time of year on Caples, cruising
fish along the back shoreline. Look
for fish from the boulders and present
a Big Ugly Rubber Leg Something in
front of them and give it a twitch as they
are coming to inspect it. Streamers
are working well off of the points and
will coerce a fish to come up out of the
depths. Rent a boat from Caples Lake
Marina for great access to the back of
the lake!
We have guides available for all of
these waters and a whole bunch more!
If you are in town without equipment or
would like to try fly fishing for your first
time we can supply everything you need
for a fun day on the water. Lessons are
also available 7 days a week. Call or
stop by the shop for more details! 530541-8208 or located at 2705 LTB in the
middle of South Shore.
Get out and fish, the season never
ends around here!

Another Late Night with LateNiteBilly
Two weeks ago I was sitting in my
office looking at my concert schedule
and for the first time in years (if not ever)
I didn't have a single event on the books
and I really didn't know how to take that?!
Should I take advantage of the break and
do something to enjoy myself or should I
get on the phone and book some shows?!
Well, after thinking it through, I realized
that when you love your job as much as
I do it's like you have never gone to work
a day in your life anyways and that is truly
the case here. Two weeks later as I sit in
my office and write this article I have a
full schedule of shows and the entire Fall
season booked for you so let me tell you
about it!
I am excited to say that I have a pretty
full schedule of shows over at Whiskey
Dicks with a little something for everyone
in every genre. First up, on Friday, October
4th we have Sublimed Live! (a tribute to
Sublime). With the mainstream success
of Sublime's self-titled album, going
five times multi-platinum and earning
worldwide airplay, Sublime’s impact
persists to this day. After Bradly Nowell's
untimely death in 1996, Sublimed Live has
taken to the streets to re-create the show
that so many fans never got a chance to
see. Now in 2013, Sublimed Live are here
to carry on the legacy. With an all star band
featuring Chris Chamberlain on drums
(from Sublime LBC), Mikey Ortiz on Bass
(from Pato Banton) and Ryan Rickman
on vocals and guitar. Ryan gives 110% to
deliver a spot on re-creation of a classic
Bradley Nowell performance and together,
Sublimed Live puts on a blistering 90
minute set of timeless hits. Opening the
show is Corn Doggy Dog and the 1/2
lb.The band is fronted by Todd "Zman"
Zalkins. Todd is a well-known stand up
comic, was the master of ceremonies of
many Sublime shows and was the star of
the bands video for "Date Rape".
Monday, October 14th at Whiskey
Dicks we have the return of "the
greatest rock n' roll band in the world"
The Supersuckers. Opening the show
is South Lake Tahoe's own Marone's (a
tribute to The Ramones and Dirt Starship).
Thursday, October 31st at Whiskey
Dicks we will host the "Freq Fest
Halloween Party featuring Freq Nasty".
Born in Fiji, raised in New Zealand and
forged in the dance music revolution of
London in late 90′s London, FreQ Nasty
started his career in 1998 on the seminal
UK label Botchit & Scarper where he
helped pioneer the global ‘Nu School
Breaks’ movement. After becoming one of
a select few artists to appear on the front
cover of UK dj bible ‘DJ Magazine’ he
moved to the legendary SKINT Records
in 2003 he went on to release a slew of
cutting-edge records, collaborating with
and remixing a diverse range of artists
including Fatboy Slim, Kelis, KRS One,
Roots Manuva, Rodney P, Bassnectar, and
Reggae legend Junior Delgado. In ‘04 and
‘05 FreQ toured the world with his ‘Video
Nasty Experience’, an eye-melting DJ/VJ/
live MC fusion, with animation perpetrated
by a hit squad of crack artists including
the ‘Brother’s Mogg’ (Lord of the Rings
animators), and ‘Gorrillaz’ artist Jamie
Hewlett’s company Zombie Flesh Eaters.
He also presents a series of talks given
with yoga teacher Claire Thompson called
‘The Yoga of Bass’, both of which seek to
open up the Yoga tradition to underground
dance music club audiences focussing on
the ecstatic dancefloor experience.
Saturday, November 2nd at Whiskey
Dicks we are pleased to announce
Kytami (from Delhi to Dublin). If a line
exists between classical and electronic,
between ancient and new age, synthetic
and organic, Kytami has sliced them all
using only a violin bow... but what more
does she need? Apparently nothing at
all, as Kytami has already been dubbed
a 'music revolutionary' by Whats Up
Magazine USA, a 'violinextremist' at home
in Canada, and has been summoned to
bring her violin thunder to audiences as
far reaching as Taiwan, Dubai and Berlin.
After co-founding the critically acclaimed
global-fusion sound-storm Delhi 2 Dublin
in 2006 and subsequently co-songwriting
them toward international musical success
until 2010, Kytami surged forward with her
own solo career, bringing the essence
of her music to audiences in its purest
possible form. If you dare witness this
violin diva take the stage, be prepared to
wear through not only the soles of your
dancing shoes, but perhaps the version of
reality you brought to the door.
Also coming up in November, we will
be hosting two AMAZING Reggae shows
at MontBleu Resort with Grammy Award
winning artists. First up, Shaggy will take
the stage at Blu Nightclub on Tuesday,
November 19th and then just ten days
later Black Uhuru will perform in the
same venue on Friday, November 29th.
We will host a couple shows out in Reno
as well. Saturday, October 19th we have
Andre Nickatina and Mistah FAB at the
Knitting Factory for an all ages show and
on Friday, November 8th we have DEV
performing all her hits like "Bass Down
Low", "Like a G6" and "In the Dark" at
Bodega Nightclub on 4th St.
Keep the Vibe Alive! ~LateNiteBilly
