When I met Clark to take a photo, he was drinking a Budweiser beer and I said, “You can have the Bud in the photo”, and he said, “Oh no, I don’t think that would be good!”. Always a wholesome image for Clark at all times. He was very cool and happy to have a show in Tahoe. From 1957 to 1987, he had the longest running variety show in TV history. American Bandstand had up to 40 million viewers every Saturday, giving national audiences their first exposure to artist like, Johnny Cash, James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Simon & Garfunkel, Ike and Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, The Beach Boys, Buddy Holly, Madonna, Bowie, Kiss, Talking Heads and Prince. That’s just to name a few of the over 10,000 acts that performed in 30 years on his legendary show. Kids danced, had fun and talked about the records. Clark was a tireless entrepreneur that produced and hosted many shows. In 1972 he started “New Years Rockin Eve”, and millions brought in the New Year with Clark each year. Also, the American Music Awards, game shows, TV shows, beauty pageants, radio shows, and so much more. We’ll miss the man that helped bring Rock “N” Roll to the mainstream in the beginning and he’ll always be known as, America’s Oldest Teenager! Sammy Hagar, The Red Rocker, performs with Chickenfoot May 4-5 at Harrah’s for the Cinco de Mayo parties. It’s so cool to have Sammy in Tahoe every year. His Cabo Wabo Cantina inside Harveys will have a Re-Grand Opening and 8th anniversary of Tahoe Wabo. May 4th, from 4-7pm, Trivalve surf band will perform and maybe see Sammy jam with them. Cabo just completed a $250,000 remodel with a new sound system, bigger stage area, new lights and floors, and a new menu. Also is Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, his latest venture that is made in Maui. May 5th celebrate with Trivalve, Left of Center, Corona and Beach Bar Rum girls, 2 for 1 Sammified rum drinks and grand prize raffle. Sammy’s son Aaron will perform with The Wabos May 2nd and 3rd also. Many Cinco de Mayo parties are included at MontBlue, The Cantina, Chevy’s, Fox and Hound, Sam’s Place, Turn 3, Steamers, Lakeside Inn, Whiskey Dick’s, Mo’s Place and more. Fox and Hound had 15-year band and Tahoe favorite Lavish Green, who’s played every main stage and Tahoe venue around town throughout the years. With the Fox’s new expansion, it’s a great band party room. Their added B-B-Q menu is a cool added bonus. The Fox girls that bartend are cute, fun and create a good time. Take a quick drive up Kingsbury and check it out. The Hard Rock at Harvey’s had their finals of Global Battle of the Bands with “Furlough Fridays” winning. Local judges included some Lavish Green boys, Tahoe TV, and Tahoe’s Chuck Garric of Alice Cooper Band. Chuck played in local Tahoe bands before making it big time. One of his guitars is on the wall at the Hard Rock in Tahoe. Chuck told me he worked backstage at Harrah’s in the late 90’s and met his now wife that was performing in a production show. Also his Mom liked seeing him in the Entertainer when we featured the Alice Cooper Show and Chuck at the Hard Rock. One of the around 85 bands from Hard Rocks that won, will perform in London’s Hyde Park July 15th with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on the bill. There’s a new place for kids to get exercise, play games, meet friends, have fun and it’s called e-Fit and Sports on Kingsbury. They have batting and golf cages also. Ages 5-17, check it out. Great for parties! Harrah’s has Chickenfoot May 4th and 5th. May 12th Rick Springfield, May 19th Beatles vs Stones - a musical shootout, Elvin Bishop May 26th and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy June 2nd. These shows will be a lot of fun. Go enjoy yourself! MontBlue has Dev and The Whitney Myer Band May 12th, May 27th Bob Saget. When Ozomatli, the Latin rock and hip-hop band, ended their show at Harrah’s, band members were performing in the entrance and merchandise area; it was really different and cool. Los Lobos, the American Chicano rock band played a big variety of music and songs and wowed the crowd with their classic “La Bamba”, also at Harrah’s. Go see Alex Ramon of Illusion Fusion at the Horizon, fun for everyone. Get some laughs at the Improv at Harvey’s also. Lakeside Inn is a Tahoe favorite for food and drink specials and where locals meet. It’s time for outdoor patios opening to dine around town. And remember, be nice, be cool. Have fun, you’re in Tahoe! Fly Fishing What a difference a year can make! This time last year we had more snow than we knew what to do with and our rivers were blown out. Well some things are the same for now meaning the rivers being blown out but the difference is the run-off will be done quickly and the fishing should be great a lot earlier than last year. Enjoy the report and get out and fish! East Carson River Fishing Report Flows 1400+ CFS and rising. May 1st,2012. The river will be somewhat blown out for the beginning of the month but should start to get fishable as the flows recede towards the middle to end of the month. Streamers are the ticket for high flows as well as Stonefly Nymphs and Glow Bugs! Wait for the color to change from mud to somewhat Green for better opportunities. The fishing below hangman's Bridge won't be easy to wade until we see 600 CFS or lower. Above the bridge the river will be stocked heavily and should be fun for beginners or those that like the tug of a Big Old' stocker. West Carson River Fishing Report - Currently at 300+ CFS and rising. The West gets better much more quickly than the East and usually doesn't get too muddy. Look for the West Carson to be really fishable by the middle of May. Buggers, Streamers, Stonefly Nymphs and Glow Bugs as well as Bigger Mayfly Nymphs should work the best. The meadow section tends to do pretty well during high water conditions and look for fish under or around the bridges! East Walker River Fishing Report Flows are 90+ CFS. May 1st, 2012. The flows will be fluctuating during the month of May but should never get to high to fish. The CA section has been the best but the fish are starting to spread out and they are not as podded up as they were this past winter. Try fishing Big Stone Dries as well as Micro Caddis Nymphs, Baetis Nymphs and the midges are always around. Streamer fishing will get better as the month progresses. The NV sections are always the way to beat the crowds of California, try fishing the back eddies and foam eddies for some fun fish! There is 7 miles of zero limit water just a short drive from the Miracle Mile into Nevada or try the Private Ranch fishing for a treat! Guides Available call (530-541-8208). Little Truckee River Fishing Report- Flows are225+ CFS. May 1st, 2012. We are coming into the best part of the season for the LT. The Baetis are going as well as the Midges. The Winter Stones are waning and keep a look out for the March Browns to fill in any day now if not already working. Baetis Nymphs and Emergers work great this time of the year. Sight casting for eating fish can be a lot of fun! Please try and stay away from the spawning fish and out of their Redds. Indian Creek Reservoir - The fishing has really taken off lately with numerous big fish caught and released. Buggers in Black, Olive and or Brown have been working well. The Blood Midges are starting to work as well and look for fish taking them off of the surface! Full sinking lines from a float tube have produced the best results. Fish a bugger followed by a Blood Midge Nymph. The Calibaetis will start to show soon as well as Damsels. Should be fun for awhile until the fish get taken out. Caples Lake - Still has ice on it but not really that great for Ice Fishing. Starting to open up in a few small areas but not quite fishable yet for Ice-Out. Victor Babbit Probably going to thaw by Mid-May. Look for the inlet area to fish earlier than that as well as a few spots around the dams. Streamers, Streamers and more Streamers when it gets fishable. Red Lake Fishing Report- Still has ice on it but not really that great for Ice Fishing. Starting to open up a bit at the end of April, should be ready to fish the first week or so of May. Blood Midges are great on Red lakes just after Ice-Out as well as Buggers and Leech patterns. Fish the upper end and look for the channels! Spooner Lake Fishing Report - The Lake is thawed and there are numerous fish in the lake! Water is cold but the fishing should get better as the temps come up. Leeches, Buggers, Blood Midges and Worms will work the best! Float tubing is the way to go. Thanks for checking out our fishing report and if you need further information on any of these waters or any others in the area, just give us a call at Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters and we will be glad to help in any way we can! Fishing season is just kicking in and the fish are waiting for you, get out and fish! 530-541-8208 www. tahoeflyfishing.com The Ultimate Youth Training & Exergaming Facility Efit and Sports The Ultimate Youth Training Grounds & Exergaming Facility “Kids love it here and trying to get them to leave is like pulling teeth”, says Cindy R who brings her children & teens to efit nearly 17 hours a week. Howie Nave COMEDY FROM THE MOUNTAIN How can it possibly be May already? Before you know it Memorial Day will be here ushering the end of the shoulder season, then the annual Renaissance Faire next month @ Valhalla (their 20th year btw), then the Lights on the Lake 4th of July celebration, the American Century Championship, the Great Sternwheeler Race, and that’s while summer is still happening! Oy! Speaking of fun things to do Nancy and I are taking our very first vacation together. The last time I had one was in Iraq and Kuwait entertaining the troops so hoping this time away will be quieter. Where are we heading? Alaska! Never been there and no it’s not a way to try and extend winter as we both tend to like the colder weather but I’ve been trying to get Sarah Palin on my morning radio show and all I get are messages from her staff so we thought we’d drop by Wasilla on the way to the Arctic Circle. In the meantime enjoy the Best Of on the radio and don’t forget to laugh whenever possible. Dat Phan returns to the Lake and lately seems like he’s been up for everything. Whoa. This is weird as I am writing this I just saw his television commercial for DirecTV called “The Whale.” Funny commercial too. Dat’s enthusiasm is infectious. I can’t even remember a time when he was really down trodden. He just loves performing and making people laugh. This quality has been with him even before he won that very first season of “Last Comic Standing” on NBC. Dat has been seen on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Tyra Banks Show” plus done voiceover work such as his stint on “The Family Guy.” Dat Phan was born Dat Tien Phan in Saigon, Vietnam but grew up in San Diego. He attended public schools and eventually moved to Los Angeles after graduating high school. He didn’t have it easy and for a while was living out of his car taking whatever work he could get while perfecting his stand up routine. He caught a break answering phones for The Improv in Hollywood on Melrose Avenue. Not exactly a gig to retire on but it offered him something more valuable: getting stage time at the famed comedy club at night after doing the phone gig during the daytime hours. It eventually paid off once that little TV show came long on NBC. He’s done movies, TV specials and has some pretty merch out there too. His latest DVD “Dat Phan Live”(available from Amazon.com) is a collection of some of the funniest bits I’ve ever heard and a testament that his act just keeps getting better. His CD, “You Touch, You Buy“ is also pretty funny and available on iTunes. He’s been a mentoring figure to young Asian comics just starting out and also to those not even in the entertainment business. I think that’s why he’s been rewarded by such prestigious organizations as The Smithsonian Institute when he was mentioned for their “Top 10 Most Influential VietnameseAmerican Individuals.” Appearing with Dat is a Tahoe fav, David Gee. David Gee with Dat Phan May 2nd through the 6th. You hear him on my radio show every Monday in our segment, “Howiewood & Haveywood” where we discuss all things in the world of motion pictures but Allen Havey has career that is at times mindboggling. He’s appeared on Seinfeld, The Louie Show, HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and the short-lived, “Free Ride” on FOX Television. That show was one of my favorites because it utilized much of his improvisational skills. His quick thinking abilities is what also landed him repeat appearances on Ashton Kutcher’s reality-based television show, “Punk’d.” On the big screen he has appeared in the movies “Internal Affairs” with Richard Gere, “Checking Out” with Jeff Daniels, “Rounders” with Matt Damon, “Wild Things Part 2: The Glades” with Isaiah Washington, “Hancock” starring Will Smith and again with Matt Damon in “The Informant!.” Havey has been a regular on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Late Night With Conan O’Brien, “ Comedy Central" and has even appeared on Comic Relief. With all his credits Allan says that entertaining our troops overseas has been his most rewarding. Appearing with Havey is Chris Mancini. Mancini and Havey together May 9th through the 13th. Comedian Scott Kennedy is a very special individual. He was the one who booked both me and Graham Elwood overseas to perform for our troops in the Middle East. Would you believe that he’s been over there almost 60 times? I don’t think Scott ever thought this would have turned into a full-time operation but his philosophy has been if there’s a need for laughter in a battle zone than Scott will fill that need. With the war shifting primarily in Afghanistan Scott is setting up shows over there and I’m hoping to make a trip this year as both my niece and nephew are currently deployed over there. Scott has headlined comedy clubs and theatres coast to coast and has sold out many of them. Performing with Scott is Flip Schultz. Flip started out in South Florida established himself pretty quickly with his high energy and very physical act. He’s opened for some pretty cool acts that include Lewis Black, George Carlin, Maryellen Hooper, Robert Schimmel, Jay Mohr, John Pinette, Bobby Slayton and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Flip is also hysterically off stage as he is on. He too has seen his fair share of television kudos including “Last Comic Standing”(seasons 4 and 7), Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham” in New York, the 2002 “Jerry Lewis Telethon,” scores of comedy festivals and appearing in the motion picture, “Big Trouble.” And if that wasn’t enough not only writes for himself but for countless other acts in addition to being a staff writer for the “Terry Fator & Friends” (winner of 2007 America’s Got Talent) at the Vegas Hilton & Mirage. Flip and Scott May 16th through 20th. Howie Nave is the host/emcee/ manager of The Improv @ Harveys every Wednesday through Sunday and also hosts his own morning show (“Howie’s Morning Rush”) on 93.9 KRLT radio Monday through Friday from 6 to 10am. Saturday, May 19th at Mo's Place we are teaming up with Pet Projekt to bring you some High Altitude Bluegrass with Hot Buttered Rum! Initially formed as an acoustic string band, seven years of constant touring has transformed Hot Buttered Rum into a plugged-in, percussive powerhouse that wows critics and fans alike. Their left-coast rock reveals an access to jazz, country, and world music that few groups can match. While the band's music belies simple categorization, its songwriting and stage chemistry delights listeners at every turn. Next up we will be celebrating my Birthday and doing it BIG as I do every year! Past years I have brought up Andre Nickatina, Del tha Funky Homosapien and Girls Gone Wild just to name a few and this year I am proud to announce "The Ambassador of the Bay Area" himself, E-40! With millions of records sold, nationwide sold out shows, loved by both the streets and respected amongst his peers, without question E-40 continues to reign supreme. Lastly for the month of May we will host a "Spring into Summer" concert to get you in the mood for the warm weather to come. Celebrating true Island style with Roots Reggae Legends from Jamaica, The Itals. This is happening at Mo's Place on Monday, May 28th. One of Jamaica's signature harmony groups, The Itals were chiefly responsible for keeping the sound and spirit of roots reggae alive well into the dancehall era. The Itals' roots date back to the '60s and the country village of Savanna la Mar, in Jamaica's Westmoreland Parish. The Itals recorded a number of highquality, Rastafarian-themed hit singles, many of which were written by Alvin "Keith" Porter: "Don't Wake the Lion," "Brutal," "Temptation," "Time Will Tell," "You Don't Care." The Itals completed their third album, Rasta Philosophy, in 1987, band it was received well, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. The Itals (which is a Rastafarian term meaning natural and pure) continue to stay true to their name in 2012! Thank you Lake Tahoe! Keep the Vibe Alive and we will see you next month! What's New, What's Now & What's Next MontBleu is pleased to announce that it is moving forward with an outdoor summer concert series. The planned MontBleu Amphitheater will hold approximately 4,500 people and will transform the long vacant tennis court area into a diverse, unique and vibrant music scene featuring national live entertainment. This important development will create new jobs and bring new revenues to the entire South Shore community.
