Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
Legendary West coast hip-hop
rapper, Snoop Dogg -one of the
biggest and most popular in the
World - gave a sold out crowd of
1,900, of all ages, a great party
to enjoy at MontBleu’s showroom.
The Doggfather wore a LA Dodgers
jacket, dark glasses for a while and
his classic mic with snoops name on
it and it’s all shiny with bling-bling.
There are other rappers that rhyme
along with him, and a DJ. A mix of
songs from his over 20 year career
included, “Drop it like it’s Hot”, “Who
am I”(What’s my name?)”, and “Gin
and Juice”. Doggs cousin Warren
G came out and rapped with songs
from the early 90’s. Snoop knows
how to create a party atmosphere
and there were smiles throughout
the entire showroom. His new album
"Doggumentary” comes out in March.
He’s been on all the TV talk shows,
guest spots o n best sellers, like Katy
Perry’s number one hit “California
Gurls”, movies, TV shows, Zynga’s
Mafia Wars game site, commercials
and more. Snoop said peace and
love as he left the Tahoe stage.
Another popular sold out show
at MontBleu was Rebelution, a
four piece Reggae band from Santa
Barbara, along with special guest
bands. This all ages show had a
cool vibe with their roots-reggae
sound. Coming next in the MontBleu
showroom is, Bassnectar, February
11 and 12, and Kevin Nealon and
Friends, February 26. Nealon is a
Tahoe favorite for continuous laughs.
From years on “Saturday Night
Live”, to the hit show “Weeds” on
Showtime, and being a favorite on
TV talk shows, Kevin knows how to
keep comedy coming. He’s also a
big crowd favorite at the Celebrity
golf Tournament at Edgewood. He’s
cool to talk to and I’m glad he loves
Tahoe.
Opal Ultra Lounge at MontBleu
has fun nights from Wednesdays to
Sundays that include drink specials,
body painting, sexy go-go dancers,
cool DJ music and a sexy lingerie
contest on Sundays.
Harrah’s continues to bring
a variety of entertainment to their
showroom. Toad the Wet Sprocket
was a cool show that included their
hit songs “All I Want”, (from 1991)
and “Walk the Ocean”. Lead singer
Glen Phillips is casual, calm and
witty as their front man. Coming to
Harrah’s is a huge Tahoe favorite,
Tower of Power, February 5. This
high energy 10 piece funk and soul
band creates a sound that makes
you feel good all over. Favorites
like, “What is Hip?”, “Soul Vacation”,
“So Very Hard to Go”, “Down to the
Night Club”, “You’re Still a Young
Man”, “Don’t Change Horses”, just
to name a few tasty treats. For over
40 years, Emilio Castillo on tenor
sax and vocals and Stephen “Doc”
Kupka on baritone sax have kept this
funky soulful band together. Roger
Smith on keyboards and vocals
played Tahoe for many years and
Tower asked him to join the band
over a decade ago. Smith has told
me how happy he’s been touring and
recording with them. He has his own
jazz CD’s also. I’ve known Emilio
since the early 80’s. He even talked
about my brother and l on Howie’s
morning show on KRLT 93.9, it was
pretty cool. This is a must see show!
Righteous Brother Bill Medeley is
February 19. The Dan Band (from
the Hangover movie) is February
25. They mix humor with cool music.
February 26 is Edward Sharpe and
The Magnetic Zeros, Robin Trower
is March 5.
Vex Night Club with sexy
dancers, cool DJ music, aerial acts
and drink specials always goes off
big on Friday and Saturday. Arthur
Hervey at Center Stage on Friday
and Saturday nights always creates
a “Party with Arty”.
There’s Cabo Wabo at Harvey’s
with fun entertainment every night to
enjoy. The Improv with new comics
each week and Howie as the host is
always good for laughs.
Whiskey Dick’s has a mix of
music to check out and good drink
specials. The Beacon has cocktail
snowshoe races February 12 and live
music. Check out all the Super Bowl
parties in our ads. The Fresh Ketch
has live music you’ll enjoy, Brothers
Bar and Grill has great food and
drink specials and Rail Jam Parties.
Fire and Ice has a happy hour from
4-6 that’s new. Anthony from Vinny’s
Pizzeria and Pasta House has tasty
pasta and meatballs and pizza you’ll
like. The Tahoe lake view at Blue
Water Bistro with food and drinks
is a delight. Music at The Flight
Deck at the Airport with good food
and drink specials is popular. There
are great golf rates at Genoa Lakes
Golf Club and Resort. Orchid’s
Thai Cuisine also has a restaurant
at Stateline next to Sushi pier.
And remember, live it up. Have
fun, you’re in Tahoe!
Another Late Night with LateNiteBilly
Spring Fever is in the air and
it's the dead of Winter, hmmm. I'm
a 15 year veteran of this and I will
still never figure out the weather in
Tahoe! I do know though it has been a
great Winter for shows! Snoop Dogg
was definitely my pick of the month
and I was honored to help out with
the afterparty sponsored by Kush
Organics. It doesn't get better than
hanging with true Hip-Hop legends
Warren-G, Daz & Kurrupt and the
rest of the best! I might not partake
in the festivities, but I definitely know
how to party in my own regard!.
I just got off a four day mini-tour
with Mickey Avalon and yes - it WAS
an adventure as hanging out with
Mickey ALWAYS is! He performed
all his anthems as well a bunch of
new material and rocked the crowd
every night! By about the time you
read this, Dead Kennedys will
have performed at Whiskey Dicks,
and if the club is still standing after
that here is what's in store for the
rest of the month both at Whiskey
Dicks, and a couple all-ages shows
at my personal new favorite Venue
up in North Lake, the Frank Sinatra
Showroom at Cal Neva Resort. It is
said to be haunted by Frank Sinatra's
ghost himself - all the more reason
for me to want to go back and check
it out! I am VERY intrigued by such
stories and definitely a believer.
SLT DUB is on its second
month running and the first one was
definitely a hit. Dubstep is taking
over and we do it the first Friday
of every month at Whiskey Dicks.
Friday, February 4th we have a live
PA with Black Rock City Allstars
plus DJ Arson from San Francisco
and DJ Billy Wonka from Las
Vegas, NV. SLT DUB!
Next up, we have a couple
more shows at Whiskey Dicks.
On Saturday, Feb. 19th we have
the Starving Millionaires. Starving
Millionaire's are a California Reggae
/ Rock trio signed to Long Beach
Records. They have played Tahoe
many times, opening for various
bands and are now ready to
showcase their own show in support
of their new album, "It ain't Pretty".
The following week you can catch
the return of Audiodub on Saturday,
Feb. 26th at Whiskey Dicks.
Opening the show is Lou Dog Trio A Tribute to Sublime.
All-ages shows are few and
far between in this town but that is
about to change. Here are two HipHop showcases you don't want to
miss. Celebrating Presidents Day
weekend, on Sunday, Feb. 20th at
Cal Neva Resort we have People
Under the Stairs and Mystik
Journeymen (Sunspot Jonz and
Luckyiam from Living Legends)
and on Thursday, March 3rd we
have the "Back to the Future
Tour" featuring Mistah FAB, Eligh
from Living Legends, Opio from
Hieroglyphics / Souls of Mischief,
The Bayliens, Dreda Dre and a
whole lot more. Did I mention a
surprise guest from another member
of Living Legends?! Both shows, allages are welcome and there is a
full bar for the 21+. This is one of
the BEST venues around the whole
Lake to see a show!
I'm excited to tell you about one
of my new favorite bands, Delhi 2
Dublin. They are from Vancouver,
Canada and create a heady,
energetic mash-up of Bhangra,
Celtic, Dub Reggae and Electronica.
“Combine the Indian drums (tabla,
dhol) and sitars of the subcontinent
with driving Irish fiddles, and toetapping Celtic progressions, keep the
dynamics fluid with bhangra world
beat soundscapes and you’ve got
Delhi 2 Dublin. The Vancouver-based
electronic world fusion quintet’s first
studio release surprises most when
the diverse sounds ooze together."
If that doesn't make you at least
intrigued enough to check them out,
I don't know what to say! Catch them
on Wednesday, March 9th at Mo's
Place and see for yourself. Till then,
you can find out more by logging in
to www.Delhi2Dublin.com
As always Tahoe, thanks for all
the love and support! Keep the Vibe
Alive! ~LateNiteBilly

COMEDY FROM THE MOUNTAIN
I can’t believe I recently passed the
10-year mark up here in South Lake
Tahoe and I bet you’re thinking, “He’s
been up here that long? Feels longer
doesn’t it?” In that time not only have I
experienced a number of people come
and go up here but a number return as
well. Yeah! It’s true what you hear about
those who returned realized that even
though the job market was kind of sucky,
the politics and state agencies up here
sucking more, the tourists getting to be a
pain at times and everybody buying stuff
off of the mountain anyway because it
was cheaper you found yourself coming
back to the top of the mountain! Why?
Maybe because it was a little colder
‘down there’ than the coldest night up
here on a clear night in the middle of
winter that’s why. I think people like
commiserating together because that
way you don’t feel like the only one
going through a tough spell but don’t
realize that until you are far away from
here. Then again I’m sure there are lots
who did leave this place and went on
to become more successful and richer
in the process but when it comes to
that time in your life where you had the
best times you know they’re thinking of
Lake Tahoe and not whatever metropolis
they’re residing in at the present time.
We won’t really know until we see that
person’s long-forgotten face up here
again. Oh yeah, Happy VD too! That
would be Valentine's Day unless you
caught something.
Until that time does arrive might I
suggest checking out comedian/actor
Allan Havey. Believe it or not if the
planets have aligned and everything
is going perfectly well in the universe
Havey will find a way to argue with you
that it’s not. That’s what makes Allan
so damn funny: he is still questioning
everything. According to Allan, “I try
to take the best things out of my club
work, fit it together, and describe what
I'm about, who I am.” Over the years
he has appeared on television acting
on Seinfeld, The Louie Show and Curb
Your Enthusiasm on HBO. I enjoyed the
short-lived, “Free Ride” on FOX because
it utilized much of his improvisational
skills. His quick thinking abilities is
what landed him on Ashton Kutcher’s
reality-based TV show, “Punk’d.” He is
so convincing it’s tough to tell when he’s
being sincere or not. On the big screen
he has appeared in the movies “Internal
Affairs” with Richard Gere, “Checking
Out” with Jeff Daniels, “Rounders” with
Matt Damon, “Wild Things Part 2:
The Glades” with Isaiah Washington,
“Hancock” starring Will Smith and again
with Matt Damon in “The Informant!.”
Havey’s has been a regular on “The Late
Show with David Letterman,” “Late Night
With Conan O’Brien, “ Comedy Central
and has even appeared on Comic Relief.
I might add that you can also hear him
every Monday morning here in Tahoe
on my little radio show in the morning
(“Howie’s Morning Rush”) when we do
our movie segment called, “The Have
vs. The Nave” on KRLT around 9:15am
in the morning. Shameless plug? Hell
yeah like they pay me to write for
this rag? Check Havey out with funny
white guy John DiResta February 2nd
through the 6th.
Another favorite up here is John
Henton. We can’t get enough of Henton
even though by the time le leaves Tahoe
he has had enough of us. He’s easily
one of my top 10 favorite comics I have
ever worked with. He’s also very realistic
about his career and how being a comic
is like riding a roller coaster with it’s
peaks and valleys. Henton sums up his
career best by saying, “I once played
Overton on the hit television series,
“Living Single” and also played Milsap
on “The Hughleys” but now I’m an out
of work comedian. ”He may not be a
regular on the sitcom circuit but he’s
doing very well on the comedy club and
recently the cruise ship circuit. John has
a lot of interesting ‘firsts’ in his career
like being one of the very last comics
to have appeared on The Tonight Show
when Johnny Carson. Soon after he
appeared on that same show when Jay
Leno took over (the first time around
before Conan). I don’t why Henton
thinks he has hit a plateau he is a
brilliant writer and has worked with some
of the best in this whacky business. His
television credits Henton started out
on “The Bob Hope Young Comedian’s
Special” in addition to starring in his
own half-hour comedy special for
Showtime called “John Henton: Comedy
With An Attitude.” He was also on
Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend.” As
mentioned earlier John is probably best
known for his FOX TV series, “Living
Single” which co-starred Queen Latifah.
The show received stellar ratings and
TV Guide selected Henton’s character
as one of the “break out” characters of
the season. He also received further
accolades when he signed on to play the
character of “Milsap” on the television
series, “The Hughleys.” That show gave
Henton a loyal following and when “The
Hughleys” moved to UPN during its third
it was the anchoring program for the
new network. Soon after John Henton’s
body of work was recognized with an
NAACP “Image Award” nomination for
Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy
Series! John was really moved by that
honor and it’s plainly obvious why he
would be honored this way. Henton has
this broad appeal that
easily goes beyond
the characters he
plays on television.
His comedy is the
same way captivating
his audiences with
his
observational
and topical humor.
To further secure
his appeal Henton
is a regular on a
variety of different
programs that range
from being on ABCTV’s “The View”
to TBS’ “Late Night
With Conan O’Brien”
and numerous other
late night talk shows. As he says, “I
like to represent! South Lake Tahoe
what, what!” He’s here with the very 3
Blonde Mom Joanie Fagan the week of
February 16th through the 20th as well.
She is amazingly funny on stage (and
off) so this week is an especially good
one. We’ll chat more with her on my
radio show because this publication is
tight on space and they’re never online
or at least my portion of the tag isn’t
represented here online.
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/
manager of The Improv @ Harveys every
Wednesday through Sunday and also
hosts his own morning show (“Howie’s
Morning Rush”) on 93.9 KRLT radio
Monday through Friday from 6 to 10am.
He’s also on Lake Tahoe Television
doing interviews with comedians and
film reviews during the segment called,
“Nave’s Raves.” He also writes a weekly
comedy column in Action Magazine and
gets the same pay as he does here
whoring himself out for The Lake Tahoe
Entertainer. Oh yeah, his DVD, “Live
From Lake Tahoe” is currently available
after his shows nightly or you can order
a copy on his website, www.Howienave.
com and make sure you check him out
on Facebook at http://www.facebook.
com/howie.nave.
Fly Fishing
The weather sure has been nice
considering the lashing we received
in November and December! I am
not complaining because the fishing
has been pretty darn good and it
looks like it is going to stay that
way for a while. February usually
brings the Stone fly and the Baetis
as well as the Midges hatching in
abundance! We have already seen
some really nice fish caught and
released on East Walker and the
Truckee Rivers in California and
Nevada. Most fish have been stuck
with really small nymphs but a few
have been taken with Stoneflies and
Streamers. As February progresses
the bugs should get bigger and the
Trout should continue eating them!
Some of my favorite fishing of
the year is about to happen on the
Lower Truckee River, the flows are
just about right and the Baetis should
start happening in a big way soon!
The fish should be healthy with all
of the water we have had and I am
sure they will be hungry as well.
Look for fish eating off of the surface
on cloudy days and more than likely
they will be eating size 16 or 18
BWO’s. The Squalla Stones should
follow closely towards the end of the
month! When Nymphing this time of
the year I like fishing a Golden Stone
Nymph with a Baetis Nymph below
it and occasionally a larger Midge
imitation. Streamers will take a few
fish and sometimes the larger ones if
you are diligent.
The East Walker River has better
flows at this time of year than I have
seen in a long time (55 CFS). I do
not know what they will do with them
over the next month but if they stay at
this level or go up the fishing will be
excellent in Nevada and California.
The bugs are a bit smaller on the
East Walker then they are on the
Truckee River and we are usually
fishing size 20-22 nymphs with the
occasional dry fly session as well.
Some anglers like the Streamer in
lighter colors and with the higher
flows can sometimes produce one
of those bigger fish. Baetis, Midges
and the occasional Stonefly Nymph
and don’t forget to take a few San
Juan Worms with you.
Pyramid Lake has been fishing
fairly well lately and should get better
as we get closer to Spring! Indicator
Nymphing works but throwing a
bugger and a beetle, I think, is a lot
more fun! Use heavy leaders and
get your bugs to the bottom! You
never know when the Big One will
bite with a few 18 pound fish caught
over the last couple of months!
Ice Fishing is really good right
now with Red Lake doing the best
and Caples producing a few fish
as well. Jigging a Kastmaster has
been good with worms being a close
second if you want to just hang out
and wait for the bite! Bring a chair,
an Auger, a shovel and a strainer
to clean out the hole and all your
normal fishing tackle! Lately sun
block wouldn’t be a bad idea either.
I have heard of a few big fish being
pulled through the ice so hang on
Victor Babbit
when you get a bite!
For more information on these
fisheries or any others in our
area, give us a call or stop by the
shop! We will get you set up with
whatever you might need for a fun
day of fishing! We have guides
available for Ice Fishing as well as
Fly Fishing all winter long, take a
break from skiing and enjoy a little
fishing with the family. We are
located at 2705 Lake Tahoe Blvd
next to Midas Mufflers and about
3.5 miles from the Casinos. 530541-8208
Entertainment & Events
PRE presents more great concerts
and events on the south shore this winter.
For the first time in his career, DJ Sharam
of Dish Dish (www.sharam.com) will
debut at Blu Nightclub on Friday, February
18, President’s Weekend. Known simply
by his first name SHARAM to the world
of popular culture, Sharam Tayebi is
a Grammy award-winning producer,
songwriter, recording artist and DJ. His
18-year career has brought him to the
world’s largest music venues and in the
studio Sharam remains one of only few
dance acts who can effortlessly navigate
between the nocturnal world of dance
music with underground hits like “Don’t
Say A Word” and “Be The Change” while
scoring Top 20 Hits internationally with
“PATT (Party All The Time)” and “The
One” featuring Daniel Bedingfield. He is
also the driving force behind the legendary
Yoshitoshi label in Washington DC using it
as a vehicle to promote newly discovered
talent from DC and around the world.
After a bountiful career as part of Deep
Dish, Sharam became a solo artist in
2008 with the release of his UK top ten hit
“PATT (Party All The Time)” — a rigorous
rework of an old Eddie Murphy record
which was produced by B — followed by
his collaboration with Daniel Bedingfield
for “The One” and finally his debut double
album, Get Wild in 2009. Always with the
ambition to be diverse and progressive,
Sharam collaborated with the likes of
P. Diddy, Tommy Lee, and Chuck D.,
and even included a Patsy Cline vocal
sample to complete this record with its
Morricone-inspired Spaghetti Western
theme. A serious movie buff, Sharam also
made his directorial debut for the album’s
single “She Came Along” featuring Kid
Cudi. Ticket are only $12 in advance, and
$15 day of.
Starting Saturday, Feb 19 of
President’s weekend, Blu Nightclub and
PRE will present Reggae Night. Some
of the hottest dance Reggae bands in
the country will tour through South Lake
Tahoe at Blu Nightclub. Check www.
montbleuresort.com for the most up-todate band information.
Funnyman Kevin Nealon, a
“Saturday Night Live” legend and
celebrated actor of “Weeds” is set to hit
MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, Saturday,
Feb. 26, for a special one-night stand at
South Lake Tahoe.
Currently Nealon can be seen in his
role as the infamous character, Doug
Wilson, on the Golden Globe awardnominated Showtime series “Weeds.”
Nealon honed his craft to perfection with
nine years of comedic mastermind as
one of the longest running cast members
on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (19861995). His reoccurring role as an anchor
on ‘Weekend Update’ made the sketch
a show standard while his unique and
hilarious characters ‘The Subliminal Man’
and ‘Hans and Franz’ go down in comedic
history.
Nealon’s movie career highlights
include his appearance in “Anger

Tahoe South Shore Winter Snow Blasts
LAKE TAHOE SOUTH
SHORE PACKAGES BIG-TIME
ENTERTAINMENT WITH BIG-TIME
SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING
South Lake Tahoe Combines the
Best Nightlife with the Best Snow
As if record November and
December snowfall weren’t enough to
whet the appetites of powder-hungry
skiers and snowboarders, Heavenly
Mountain Resort and Harrah’s Lake
Tahoe came together today to announce
Tahoe South Winter Snow Blast (www.
ltsnowblast.com), a monthly, winter
concert series combining on-mountain
festivities with world-class, nighttime
entertainment in a package that only
Lake Tahoe South Shore can provide.
Tahoe South Winter Snow Blasts
are scheduled once per month starting
in January, stretching through the ski
and snowboard season’s end in April.
Cutting-edge acts including Edward
Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Dawes,
M. Ward, Cold War Kids, The Dan
Band and more, will bring their popular,
groundbreaking sounds to the Harrah’s
South Shore Room, which is celebrating
over 50 years of entertaining visitors to
Lake Tahoe.
On the mountain, Heavenly will hold
amateur slopestyle ski and snowboard
events on the new Ante Up terrain park
on the Saturdays leading off each Snow
Blast weekend. Located under the
Tamarack Express Chairlift, Ante Up is a
true slopestyle park comprised entirely
of recycled features including tractor
tires, water tanks, corrugated and
snowmaking pipes. Heavenly will also
have live music at the new Tamarack
Lodge at the top of Heavenly’s Gondola.
“Nowhere else in the ski world does
a marriage of on-mountain excitement
and off-mountain entertainment like this
exist,” said John Wagnon, Heavenly’s
vice-president of marketing and sales.
“You get big snow, big mountains
and incredible views of Lake Tahoe
combined with high-energy Nevada
nights and all-night entertainment. No
other destination can offer such a unique
experience.”
“It’s great to partner with Heavenly in
2011 for these four exciting weekends,”
says Glenn Cademartori, Harrah’s
regional vice president of marketing.
“Combining
an
already-incredible
snowpack, a wide range of activities
on the mountain, 24-hour casino action
and the hottest new acts performing in
Harrah’s South Shore Room, the Winter
Snow Blasts will definitely be the ‘don’t
miss’ weekends this season.”
