Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
Last month’s Lake Tahoe
Entertainer Halloween pictorial issue,
showed once again how Tahoe loves
its Halloween parties. Photo-shooting
hundreds of photos from the 33rd
Annual Freakers Ball at MontBleu,
Vex Nightclub at Harrah’s, Mo’s
Place (presented by Late-Nite
Productions) and Whiskey Dick’s
was a lot of fun! Tony Drew, the
publisher, and I, mix a variety of
unique, sexy, wild and fun photos
into the issue. I wish we could put
all of them in. You can always go to
Entertainertahoe.com to see that
issue and other back issues to get
some smiles anytime.
MontBleu will host The Tahoe
Adventure Film Festival with your
MC, Todd Offenbacher, from Tahoe
TV. On December 10th. We help
sponsor this cool event that has
amazing movie clips that are about
10 minutes each. Todd has been
busy in the Antarctica and filming
a program in Alaska that will air
December 9th and 16th on the
Discovery Channel called, Flying
Alaska. Tahoe photographer, Corey
Rich, will also be featured. Todd is
a world-class climber and Heli-Skier
and is always traveling the globe.
The film festival sells out, so get
your tickets to this party atmosphere,
with a variety of outdoor adventures
that will get your heart and blood
pumping!
MontBleu will be big for New
Year’s Eve Parties. Opal and Blue
Night clubs are two parties in one for
the same price. Featuring live music,
DJ’s, go-go dancers, body painting
and more. Also they will have another
Pool Party with a Bikini contest, pool
aerialists, DJ’s and more. Daniel
Tosh December 16 and 17 is sold
out. Get tickets early, when you see a
show or event that you really want to
go to in Tahoe. December 30th is The
Cataracs and January 3rd NOFX.
Harrah’s has soul and R&B
singer Mavis Staples, December
10th. This legendary gospel singer
known for many years with The
Staple Singers, has won many
awards and is considered one of the
many greats from a lot of magazines.
When I photo shoot her at Harvey’s
Outdoor concerts, it was a treat to
hear the real deal in person as she
sang one of her classics, “Take You
There”. December 17th will bring
80’s rockers Night Ranger back to
Harrah’s. This is a fun show with
lead singer and bassist Jack Blades.
“Sister Christian”, “Don’t Tell Me You
Love Me” and “When You close Your
Eyes” is some of their many hits they
have. Great lead guitar player, Brad
Gillis, will rip it up. December 30th
they have Bruce Hornsby. Some
years back l phot-shot Hornsby at
the Reno Hilton’s Outdoor Show with
an all-star band, and at the Jazz
Fest in New Orleans, he really mixes
styles on piano and vocals with rock,
jazz, classical, blue grass, blues and
jam music. He’s recorded with many
greats like, Grateful Dead, Bonnie
Raitt, Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks,
Crosby, Stills and Nash, to name a
few. His classic hit song, “The Was It
Is”, is beautiful.
Vex Nightclub will be another
popular New Year’s Eve Party with
go-go dancers, amazing aerialists,
DJ’s and more. Cabo Wabo at
Harveys with live music, DJ’s, drink
specials, is great for food, fun, sports
and New Year’s Eve. Straw Hat
Pizza and Sport Bar has good food
and drink specials and lots of TV’s
at Harveys. Whiskey Dick’s has a
variety of live music and DJ’s. Also
Fat City Food Company delivers
there.
Horizon has the popular show,
“One Voice”, starring Bethany
Owen. You’ll love her impressions,
comedy, costumes and improvisations
of celebs like, Marilyn Monroe, Cher,
Reba, Dolly, Bette, Shania, Patsy,
Diana, Barbara, and the list goes on
and on. Fun for the whole family.
Lakeside Inn Casino, known
for 2 and 3-dollar drinks and great
food specials, had some of their
employees play a jam session.
These talented musicians created
a fun party. December 9th is their
Ullar Snow Party with a DJ, drink
specials, prizes and bring a toy to
help Christmas Cheer. The Fresh
Ketch’s Pray for Snow Party,
which they’ve been doing for over 20
years, was a great time, upstairs and
downstairs. Also on Friday’s with Niall
McGuiness and New World Jazz
Project, you can get their new CD.
The Soroptimist Food and Wine
Tasting at Harrah’s, with everyone
dressed up for Tahoe, was a fun time.
For over 40 years they have helped
our community with money from this
very popular event. Horizon has
Christmas lights out front that’s great
for taking pictures and enjoying.
And remember, Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year. Have fun,
you’re in Tahoe!
What's Goin' On - Harrah's & Harveys
The holidays are upon us and, before we
know it, the New Year will be upon us. And while
we’re all still waiting for that first big snowfall,
there’s still a lot to do indoors at Harrah’s and
Harveys Lake Tahoe.
December gets off to a rollicking start when
Tahoe favorites The Dan Band bring their hilarious
musical parody show to the South Shore Room on
Dec. 3 for some side-splitting adult comedy. Must
be 21+ for this show. One of the greatest living
exponents of gospel, blues and soul music graces
the stage next when the legendary Mavis Staples
performs on Dec. 10.
South Shore Room stalwarts Night Ranger
rock the house on Dec. 17 with a long list of classic
rock hits, including the all-time great rock ballad,
“Sister Christian.” The Sun Kings are one of the
best exponents of pure Beatles music playing
today. Eschewing the usual “mop top” haircuts
and costumes, The Sun Kings’ eclectic choices
and spot-on renditions show why the Beatles
were such a powerful and incredibly talented
musical force. Don’t miss this special Dec. 25
performance.
Stellar musician, singer and songwriter Bruce
Hornsby rings in the New Year a day early when
he performs in the South Shore Room on Friday
night, Dec. 30. Since his 1986 breakthrough
hit, “The Way It Is,” Hornsby has gained a huge
following and he was often seen playing with the
Grateful Dead on numerous occasions between
1988 and ’95.
Harrah’s will be hosting Heavenly’s 4th
Annual Snowcial, Jan. 18 – 21, and presenting
the final night concert featuring Young the Giant,
among the most electrifying new rock groups
on the music scene today. Mark your calendar
for Jan. 21 to enjoy a very special Lake Tahoe
exclusive!
Speaking of hot acts, Harrah’s and Heavenly
are launching the first of four Winter Snow Blast
weekends this winter with popular newcomers,
Fitz & The Tantrums, on Jan. 28. More Winter
Snow Blast weekend entertainment and events
will be announced soon.
Across the street at Harveys Cabaret, the
venerable Improv Comedy Club has a great
line-up for laughter during the holidays. Brian
Dunkleman and David Gee kick of the month,
playing through Dec. 4, followed by Scott Record
and the ever popular Carrie Snow, Dec. 7 – 11.
Al Madrigal won’t be singing, but there will be
plenty of laughs when he shares the mic with
Brandon Walsh, Dec. 14 – 18, followed by Tahoe
favorites Jeremy Hotz and Marc Price return to
Harveys, Dec. 21 – 25. (The Improv will be dark
Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.) The great Kivi Rogers
and Frances Dilorinzo will help ring in the New
Year, Dec. 28 – Jan. 1, and John Caponera and
Tracy MacDonald get 2012 off to a hilarious start,
Jan. 4 – 8.

COMEDY FROM THE MOUNTAIN
Where did all the time go this past
year? I blame part of the acceleration
on the fact the massive amount of snow
we had probably threw our timetable
off, not to mention snow that even crept
into summer. Regardless the year just
went too fast for me. Will I have any
New Year’s Resolutions this time? Nah
probably not. I mean why set yourself up
for unrealistic goals huh? I just want folks
up here to have a better time next year
than they did this year. I’m lovin’ all the
holiday lights though especially on some
of the huge trees along 50 and down at
the Y. I still crack up though that people
who work for the various agencies up
here have no choice but to call the
Christmas lights ‘holiday’ lights so as
to not offend those who don’t celebrate
Christmas or have their feelings hurt.
Oh c’mon lightweight pussies take it
from a Jew: Christmas is anything you
want to make it. If things were to be
completely politically correct Santa will
wish everyone a very Merry Holiday and
songs will have to be re-recorded such as
the Bing Crosby classic, “White Holiday.”
Just enjoy the feeling that comes with
the season and to my Atheist friends out
there think of December 25 as a day off
with pay!
Back for the first time in a long
while it’s comedian/entertainer Scott
Record. Scott blends comedy, singing,
impressions and even costume changes
to deliver one very entertaining, high
energy show. Scott does a ton of cruise
ships and theaters but loves coming to
our room because it’s more of a cabaret
setting than your basic comedy club. But
Scott started out doing the comedy club
circuit getting his first break working at
Dangerfield’s Comedy Club in New York
City. Turns out the late comedic legend
took a liking to Scott and asked if he
wanted to tour with him! So, for the next
three years Dangerfield used him as his
opening act playing some of the most
prestigious venues coast to coast. That
in turn opened more doors which lead
to opening up for superstars such as
Ann-Margaret, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra,
Tom Jones, Julio Iglesias, Perry Como,
Tony Bennett, The Gatlin Brothers, Tim
McGraw, Faith Hill, Huey Lewis and the
News, Celine Dion, Cher, Clint Black
and many others. Working with Scott is
Carrie Snow. When I first met Carrie
she doing a one-woman show entitled,
“7000 Sailors Can’t Be Wrong.” For as
long as I have known her (beginning in
the San Francisco bay area) Carrie has
been one of the most original acts I’ve
ever seen regardless of gender. I love
her observations on life and one of my
favorite sayings from her is: “Having a
male gynecologist is like going to an
auto mechanic who doesn't own a car.”
Carrie is a great writer and caught a nice
break writing for comedian Roseanne
Barr to write stand-up bits and special
projects like The MTV Music Awards
and the monologue and sketches when
Roseanne hosted Saturday Night Live.
This segued into three seasons as Story
Editor on “Roseanne” where Carrie ran
her own “joke room.” She also gueststarred on the sitcom as well. When
Roseanne conceived her daily talker,
Carrie was an original hire. I’d tell more
but some things are best left to the
imagination. Great pairing having Carrie
and Scott together December 7th through
the 11th.
It’s time once again to have up
here everything opposite with regards
to being optimistic about life, wishing
goodwill to others and making misery
the new catchphrase for December.
What? You mean Jeremy Hotz is here
over Christmas? How can one of the
funniest acts alive be so miserable?
One of Canada’s best imports Jeremy
Hotz is always creating something be
it on stage, on television or on the
big screen. Whether he’s writing for a
sitcom, a special or just something for his
website you can bet Jeremy is thinking
of something funny right at this very
moment. First off he has one of the more
unique deliveries around. It’s not just
the smart material and insights but the
presentation of his act that makes him
so unique. He is a little tough on himself
but I think it might be a Canadian thing
because he is also tough on Canada too.
When talking about Canada Hotz says,
“It’s not a very tough country, huh? They
got an army; they just didn't give them
guns or anything. Look at the Canadian
flag. It's not a symbol of power, it's a
leaf but don't screw with Canada. They'll
dry up and blow away.” His CD, Lost
Bird is hilarious as is his DVD, “What a
Miserable DVD this is” taped ‘live’ at The
Imperial Theatre in Montreal, Quebec.
Because of the taping of the TV show
“My Life And A Movie” and issues with
the venue things were a bit late but now
he is good to go. Appearing with Hotz is
Marc Price. Yes, he was a child actor but
no, he didn’t freak out when he became
an adult like robbing 7 Elevens or getting
strung out on drugs. He became a comic
which is essentially all of those things
combined. As a stand-up Marc can trace
the lineage of his talent back to his father,
Al Bernie. Al performed at legendary
venues such as the Playboy Clubs
and was a frequent guest on “The Ed
Sullivan Show.” Price spent his childhood
in the company of his Dad’s friends Sid
Caesar, Milton Berle and George Burns.
He learned the art of funny from the best
and still enjoys doing stand up. Over the
years Marc has opened for Jay Leno ,
Jerry Seinfeld, toured with Carrot Top
and Weird Al. He was on stage at the
very first “Comic Relief” benefit concert
on HBO. Mr. Happy (Price) and Mr.
Miserable (Hotz) December 21st through
Christmas day.
For New Year’s it’s Kivi Rogers and
Frances Dilorinzo. Two great comics
and a fun way to bring in 2012. I’d say
more but have run out of room. Online I
have unlimited space but wanted to give
them a holler here anyway. You’ll have to
tune in to my radio show to get the more,
in-depth interviews with all of the comics
coming up here. Happy New Year Tahoe!
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/
manager of The Improv @ Harveys

and also hosts his own morning show

10am. www.Howienave.com and make

Fly Fishing
Winters just keep getting better
for fly fishing. It used to be we kind of
took a break during the winter months
or we went Steelhead Fishing, but now
there are numerous options for trout
fishing in our own backyard. The East
Walker in Nevada has always been fun
during the winter but now we have the
California sections as well. The Truckee
River has been an option but now we
have the California section as well as
Nevada and Nevada just keeps getting
better. Even the East Carson River has
opportunities during the winter months
and sometimes fishes better than one
might expect. I guess there is no longer
a good reason to take a break anymore,
fishing is fun year round!
Just a quick report on some of
these fisheries:
East Carson River Fishing Report
– Currently flowing at 80+ cfs.
Now closed above Hangman’s
Bridge until April 2012!
The Catch and Release section
below Hangman’s Bridge: Open all year!
It will take a special effort to get fish in
this section over the next few months.
As the temperatures come up in March,
the fishing can get good again between
stormy days and run-off days. The fish
are there but really lethargic and you will
have to put the fly on their nose for them
to eat. Midges and Baetis if you have
to! The Nevada sections tend to fish the
best during the winter months and on
occasion NDOW stocks fish in the lower
river and below the Broken Dam. If they
do, it can be fun to stick a few fish and
keep the cobwebs off your cast!
East Walker River Fishing ReportFlows are 25+ cfs.
Now we are really at winter flows
and the fish are bucketed up in the
deeper runs and holes. Not the greatest
time of the year to fish the Walker in
California but the fishing is still worth
a try. Small bugs are the answer and
should stay that way most of the winter.
Try 20’s and 22’s in your favorite Midge
pattern of Baetis pattern!
Nevada sections are fishing a bit
better than California but stick to the
same bugs. I have seen Baetis hatches
at this time of year that were as good
as any other time of the year with
numerous fish up eating them. Look
for the warmer days with cloud cover
for best results. With the lower flows,
access is much improved!
Little Truckee River Fishing
Report- Flows are 80+ cfs.
At least the crowds are finally down
and the fish are getting a bit of a break.
As long as you can get up the road, the
fishing should be worth the effort. Look
for risers in the middle of the day but
don’t count on a ton of them. The fish
are still up and they still have to eat!
Baetis and Midges in small sizes under
the surface as well as on top!
Truckee River (Ca) Fishing
Report- Flows on the Truckee are
below 60 cfs near the town of Truckee
and 400+ cfs below Boca Bridge.
Closed above the 267 Bridge. The
year round section is still fishing but
tough. The water is cold and the fish
are lethargic but still have to eat. Put
it on their head and they will probably
open their mouths but it will take an
excellent angler to get a few fish! Try
Baetis or Midges and possibly an Egg
pattern or San Juan Worm. It is going
to get tougher as we start getting more
storms in the near future! The lower
you go towards Nevada the better the
opportunity will be.
Truckee River (Nv) Fishing
Report- Flows on the Truckee in
Victor Babbit
Nevada are 400+ cfs
Flows are great for this time of
the year and actually a little on the
high side! Look for the cloudy days
for filled in Baetis hatches especially
below Reno. Nymphing will be best but
the dries have produced a few fish as
well. Nymphs: Stoneflies 8-12, Mayfly
patterns 16-20, Flashback PT’s 16-20.
Dry Flies: Parachute Adams14-18 and
Blue Duns 18-20. Streamer action is
picking up and is your best shot at one
the Nevada Toads!, Streamers-Buggers
in olive, white and black, Wool-Head
Sculpin, Crystal Buggers, Meat Whistle
olive and black, and of course the
Crawdad!!! Great flows for floating!

Another Late Night with LateNiteBilly
Keepin' the Vibe Alive - that's
what we do over here at Late-Nite
Productions! Another Winter and
another set of shows! I'm excited as
things couldn't be busier!
As always we have a little
something for everyone in the works
for this Winter but we are known for
our Hip-Hop shows here in town and
in the month of December we will be
celebrating a couple of our annual
events! First up, Friday, December 9th
at Mo's Place it's "How Hip-Hop Stole
Christmas" featuring Pigeon John
playing with a full band, Radioactive
(formally from Michael Franti and
Spearhead) and most recently known
in town from hosting this past summers
Pool Parties at Montbleu Resort.
Radioactive is labeled the "Undisputed
Human Beatbox Champion". Also on
this bill is Kytami (former Violinist from
Delhi 2 Dublin). She will be performing
a set in which she calls Violin vs. Vinyl,
battling it out with her DJ, a MC and a
live Drummer! This show incorporates
a lot of different musical elements and
is sure to impress even the biggest
critic. Come see How Hip-Hop Stole
Christmas this year at Mo's Place!
Now for this next one, I would
recommend leaving your Girlfriend and
Sisters at home for the "Third Annual
Stocking Stuffer" featuring two of
the naughtiest rappers in the biz in
one night. That's right, Dirt Nasty and
Smoov-e are coming to slander Lake
Tahoe on Wednesday, December
28th at Mo's Place. Dirt Nasty
is Simon Rex, originally from San
Francisco, California. In 1995 he was
a VJ for MTV, one of the most popular
of his time. After he left MTV he began
a solo acting career and was cast in
the television show Jack & Jill, which
ran for two seasons. He appeared
as “Eli” in the TV show Felicity;
television guest appearances followed
including Baywatch, Everwood, and
Summerland. Simon has appeared in
the films The Forsaken, Scary Movie
3, Scary Movie 4 and The Karate Dog.
He starred in National Lampoon’s
Pledge This! with Paris Hilton, in which
the two share a sex scene. He also
briefly dated Jaime Presley. If that
wasn't enough, Rex then developed
his rapping career. He toured with his
group Dyslexic Speedreaders along
with Mickey Avalon, Beardo, and Andre
Legacy. Rex is known for performing
insane freestyle raps talking about
everything from sex to drugs, and he
often endorses Folgers coffee in his
songs. For the first time ever performing
together - Also on the bill is Smoov-E.
He was born in Tennessee and moved
to California but not by choice (as said
in lyrics from decapitation with x-raided)
He is known for his work with the late
Mac Dre and also Andre Nickatina.
He’s a self proclaimed “pretty face
pimp” He’s smoov like water, and tends
to be one of the more explicit rappers
out there…He Also loves women.
No, you don’t understand, he LOVES
women. This shows sells out every year
so get your tickets early. You can bet
the LateNitePartyGirls will be in the
house for this one!
Speaking of sold out shows we
are bringing back Andre Nickatina to
Cal Neva Resort in North Lake Tahoe
for an all-ages show on January 6th.
This time, by popular demand, he is
bringing The Jacka (Mob Figaz). Last
year when Nickatina performed at the
same Venue it was sold out and this
won't be any different with this amazing
double bill of the Bay Area's finest!
Now I know some of you have heard
a rumor of a new Bar opening out at
Kirkwood and the rumors are true! I'm
proud to be helping the owner, David
Thom get everything in order. 7800' has
a little bit of everything from a delicious
Menu serving Breakfast, Lunch and
Dinner (and NOT at resort prices), to a
full bar and Live Music and DJ's on the
weekends. We are hosting talent from
Lake Tahoe, Reno and beyond and the
locals are going to love it! Check out
www.7800Kirkwood.com for more
info or better yet stop in and say hi to
David and his awesome staff that he
put together. Confirmed live music for
the first part of the season includes
Weapon (12/16), Sub-reactor (12/23),
Dads LP's (12/29), Thrive (12/30),
Jelly Bread (NYE), Headphone Union
(1/6) and Dead Winter Carpenters
(1/13). DJ Keenan will spin Hip-Hop
and Top 40 every Saturday. Wait, did I
mention there is no cover (except NYE)
and the food and drinks prices are NOT
resort prices!
So that's it for now Tahoe, but we
gotta plug Sierra at Tahoe for all the
love from year to year- I look forward
to seeing all the new faces in town at
the next show! Keep the Vibe Alive!
