WELCOME TO UNM R 1) GEORGE PEARL HALL Heading west from Welcome Center and Cornell Parking Structure you will see George Pearl Hall on your left. George Pearl Hall is home to our School of Architecture. This building features gallery spaces to showcase our students’ innovative work, as well as our Fine Arts and Design library on the top floor. Students in the Architecture program are given personal studio space each semester, as well as 24-hour access to the building. 2) UNM BOOKSTORE Across from George Pearl Hall is the UNM Campus Bookstore. The Bookstore offers textbooks, essential class supplies, and the UNM Technology store. It is also a popular place for students to get their Lobo Gear for the big game! Just outside the Bookstore students can find the Manzanita Co-op, an all-organic health food store where students can have a healthy lunch. 3) CENTER FOR THE ARTS Heading north on the Cornell Mall you will find the Center for the Arts on your left. If you enter the building you will find Popejoy Hall, the largest concert venue in the state. Popejoy hosts music and theatre productions as well as cultural events all year round. This building also houses the music department, University Art Museum, two smaller theatre and concert venues called Rodey Theatre and Keller Hall, and an experimental black box theatre. 4) TRIBUTE TO MOTHER EARTH FOUNTAIN Continuing west you will see the Tribute to Mother Earth Fountain directly ahead. This fountain is a great place for students to meet friends, and is steps from the Campus Shuttle and city bus stops (both free for UNM students). Nearby buildings are: Castetter Hall (Biology, featuring a greenhouse that is open to the public), Northrop Hall (Earth and Planetary Sciences), and the CERIA Building (Cinematic Arts, Art Technology Center, and Museum of Southwestern Biology). 5) CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE Heading north from the Mother Earth Fountain on the Yale Mall you will pass the Carlisle Gym on your left. The original gym for the UNM campus, this building is now home to the dance programs, including the only accredited program in Flamenco Dance in the world. Past the Carlisle Gym, you will find another of the many pieces of public art that grace the UNM campus: The Center of the Universe by Bruce Nauman. To your right is Ortega Hall (Linguistics Department). Cont’d 6) MITCHELL HALL Just west of The Center of the Universe is Mitchell Hall. Mitchell Hall features hi-tech, energy efficient classrooms, lots of seating and study areas, a convenience store, and one of 13 computer pods around the campus. Home to many freshman classes, its classrooms are perfect for UNM’s average class size of 33 students. 7) DUCK POND On the other side of The Center of the Universe you will see the Duck Pond. This is a very common gathering point for students on campus, especially in the warmer months. Take a moment to relax and notice the ducks, turtles, and fish in the pond. UNM features campuswide wireless internet, and even here at the duck pond anyone can pick up Wi-Fi. Students can check out a variety of e-book readers at Zimmerman Library, and study outdoors in the New Mexico sunshine. 8) SMITH PLAZA and ZIMMERMAN LIBRARY Returning to The Center of the Universe, make a left and head east along the walkway until you reach a large, open, brick plaza. This plaza is known as Smith Plaza and hosts Welcome Back Days and other student activity fairs and events. It is located between two important buildings: the Humanities Building, and Zimmerman Library. Zimmerman Library is the largest library in New Mexico, and houses over a million books. The library also has a large computer lab, coffee shop, lots of study spaces (including private rooms for study groups to check out), and a location of CAPS, UNM’s free undergraduate tutoring. You are encouraged to explore Zimmerman Library! 9) MESA VISTA HALL Heading east up the ramp from Smith Plaza you will find Mesa Vista Hall. Here you can find student services such as financial aid, student employment, academic advisement, and more. Mesa Vista Hall is also home to many of our student resource centers, including Accessibility Resource Center, American Indian Student Services, African American Student Services, and the Women’s Resource Center. This is one of the most important buildings on campus and students are strongly encouraged to learn what it offers. 10) STUDENT UNION BUILDING (SUB) Just west of Mesa Vista Hall you will find the Student Union Building or the SUB. On the first floor you can find a movie theatre, a computer lab, a convenience store, a bank, and a pool hall called Louie’s Lounge. The second floor holds a food court with many dining options, and the large ballrooms where career fairs and other special events are held, as well as the UNM Veterans Resource Center. Please explore the SUB, and find out what else it has to offer.
