StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard Abstract The Ronan Montana web cam is posted on the Ronan Montana website and the Ronan Montana Facebook page. Overview The performance evaluation looks at the community, other web cams, the business and networking aspects of an individual cam. We review the web site statistics and then review the Facebook statistics to determine the best way to utilize the web cam. TheCommunity Ronan Montana is located 12 miles south of Flathead Lake on the Flathead Indian Reservation. According to the 2010 census, Ronan, the center of a vibrant agricultural community and has roughly 1,800 people. OtherWebCams A Google search for Montana web cams locates several web cams. Most web cams only have the live image. The Arlee and St. Ignatius web cams were excluded from this report. TheCommunity Ronan is a community of roughly 1,800 people located 12 miles south of Flathead Lake. It is on the main thoroughfare between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park. Purpose Developing Wings established the RonanMt.com website to support St Patrick’s Hospital Life Flight. They needed a way to see the cloud cover at the airport to know if they could land. The Ronan web cam is the northern end of the Flathead Indian Reservation, having a cam here helps connect all three cities. The only posts on the Ronan Facebook page have been the images and time lapse from the web cam until a volunteer came forward mid July. 3 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard WebCamSet‐Up A Mobotix web cam captures the Mission Mountain range near Ronan and events at the Ronan airport. Image posting on the website and on Facebook began January 2012. We monitored the statistics and comments to see if single images, multiple images or time lapse were preferred. Once the audience preferences are identified a script was automatically posts the images and time lapse videos on a predetermined schedule. The live web cam is posted on Ronan Montana’s website www.ronanmt.com. The best images of the day for the last 5 days are presented in small slide shows under the web cam. Networking Images are shared with two sister cities where Developing Wings has web cams and Facebook pages, ArleeMontana.com and StIgnatiusMontana.com. 4 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard RonanMt.comStatistics Hits The hits outline how many times a request is made to the server. This includes everything from images, scripts and html files. For example, if there are 5 images on a page your server will make 6 requests. One for the html file and 5 for the images which equals a total of 6 hits on your webalizer report for every time someone loads that page. 5 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard Files Files represent the total number of hits that actually return a result. For example if there are 5 images on a page and one of them in broken the results will only return as 5, one for the html page and 4 for the images which returned a positive result. The broken image will not return a result as the server did not find anything when requesting that item. Pages Pages are just that, pages! Every time a page is loaded by someone it will be returned as one value. So if a visitor goes through 5 pages while they are on the website, this is the value that will be shown. Visits Visits are probably the important value to be looking out for. A visit is every time someone comes to the website from a given IP Address. Basically it is a pretty good guide to tell how many visitors have come to the website. There is a timeout session with visitors (default value is 30 minutes) which means after 30 minutes if that same IP address comes back to the website it will calculated that as another visit. Sites Sites are the number of unique IP Addresses that make a request to the server. This value should be used only as a rough estimate to the amount of visitors to the website. Many visitors can appear to come from multiple IP Addresses or appear to come from a single website. KBytes KBytes outlines the amount of data that was transferred between the server and your visitor’s local machine. Analysis September 8, 2013 200 pages a day for a city of 1,800 people shows that the website is being used. The page containing the life web cam and the Ronan events page are the highest hit pages. The high hits and files count with a lower page count indicates hot linking. Hot linking of pictures is when other web site(s) link directly to the image. This uses our server bandwidth to display images on their site. We have taken measures to stop this. 6 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard FacebookStatisticalAnalysis Facebook pages have ‘Fans’, people who have ‘Liked’ the page and want to receive more information. When a post is made to the Facebook page, it is shared with a percentage of the Fans. People can also go directly to the page to see posts. When a viewer sees a post they have several possible actions. They can view, like, comment, share, hide, report as spam or unlike the page. This information can be tracked. The following section reviews four different actions people can do to posts on Facebook. o o o o The number of people reached on the Facebook page (Post Reach) How people interact with the web cam (Likes, Comments and Shares) Is there a negative impact due to the web cam (Hide, Report as Spam and Unlikes) The total number of people reached on the Facebook page and on shared posts. Rinard PostReach What is Post Reach? (From Facebook) “Reach is the number of people who have seen your post. Figures are for the first 28 days after a post's publication and include people viewing your post on both desktop and mobile. Your post counts as having reached someone when it is loaded and shown in News Feed.” The following graphs demonstrate the Post Reach during June 2013. Ronan is a community of roughly 1,800 people, on June 10, 2013 the Facebook page had 615 fans. During the month of June Ronan Montana Facebook page reached a record high of 1,132 (June 21, 2013) people on one day. It was her first post. The Ronan web cam overlooks the airport. This view is not the most desirable. We 9 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. Rinard Hide, Report as Spam and Unlikes: 3 August 10, 2013 to September 9, 2013 Analysis September 6, 2013 People became ‘Fans’ of the Ronan Facebook page with expectations. There were comments of wanting different views without realizing that the views were from a stationary web cam. Occasional posts were hidden but no one chose to hide all the posts. TotalReach When a post is shared, commented on or liked, it is shown to a percentage of their friends. This expands the ‘Total Reach’. Their friends get to see the original post. This is one of the most important numbers to watch. 13 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. The mountains are beautiful when they have snow. The lower total reach reflects this. 14 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard Analysis September 6, 2013 Privacy is important to Montanans. Over 600 fans and yet there is limited information regarding their city. The same happens with the reach and engaged statistics. The age group of the people opting to share their information with Facebook is interesting. There are fewer younger people, which makes sense. Most young people do not value pictures. People engaging with the Facebook posts are not teenagers, they are the decision makers with money to spend. ImpactonNon‐WebCamRelatedPosts The Ronan web site has received very little attention. Recently a woman in Ronan has been helping with the website. Her first post was a video that was taken during the Ronan Rodeo. It went viral. 18 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard Analysis September 6, 2013 With minimal amount of work the Ronan Facebook page would be viable. Moving the camera would help bring in more people. Even with the lack of input and a view of the activity at the airport the website and Facebook page pull in more traffic than most small businesses websites and Facebook pages. 19 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard BestPostTypes Facebook offers statistics regarding the best post type. Reviewing this report allows us to customize the posting to the type of post for the audience. Facebook returns the same statistics for the three month period. This is not the case. 20 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard Analysis September 6, 2013 It is difficult to analyze the most popular posts when the Facebook statistic program does not return viable information. Regardless of input 21 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc. StIgnatiusMontana StIgnatiusMontanaWebCam PerformanceEvaluation Report by: Roxane A. Rinard Conclusion September 6, 2013 The Ronan website and Facebook page are accessed by community with a Fan base of over 600 people. In July 2013 I approached the airport committee regarding the web cam. The committee consists of retired pilots who have little to no computer experience. Although they liked the idea, they are not willing to support the cam. Moving the web cam to a better location and adding more community information would increase the traffic of the website and the Facebook page. 22 Performance Evaluation – St Ignatius Mt Web Cam/Community Sites| Developing Wings, Inc.
