Womanhood can be a wonderful thing. Little girls are fun and sweet and special. I always am sure to let my female inmates I teach life skills to, that I am a true “girlie girl”. Dressing up and getting pretty is fun to me. However I also enjoy jeans, nice sweat suits and what I call “comfort” cloths. Pampering yourself from time to time is a very good thing and what better way to do that, than having a foot massage, pedicure and nails done? Now that I described some of the fun things about being a woman, in my mind, the more serious issues are for me, that I remain engaged in my community. I’m passionate, and I believe a lot of my sisters are, about helping to make positive change in our neighborhoods, even if it’s only on our block. I can’t help myself, but that mothering instinct still burns strong in my chest, even though my children are grown folks and I have Grands of my own to mother and nurture now. But I also always strive to be nurturing in my community. We have outstanding women in Philadelphia right now, living in this year of 2012 and they are nurturing in so many ways. I’m referring to such women as Queen Mother Falaka Fattah, Madeline Dunn, Audrey Johnson Thornton, the leader of the Historic Belmont Mansion, Mrs. Anne Marquess Garrott, Linda B. Watson, Rev. Lorina Marshall Blake, Bishop Mary Floyd Palmer, Maxine Mc Intyre of Connections Training Services, Robin Torrence of Allegheny West Foundation, Joye Nottage, Harriet Ahmad, Barbara Daniel Cox, Saundra Ali, Gracie Stevenson, Juanita Stevenson, and a long list of other outstanding women. We also have a rich history of outstanding women who are deceased but who made their mark in a major way, while they lived. They left a legacy. I’m talking about Dr. C. Delores Tucker, Co-Founder of the Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Association for Nonviolence, Inc. Onah C. Weldon, President of the Philadelphia, National Congress of Black Woman, Rev. Dr. Sarah Potter, Pennsylvania’s first African American State Senator Roxanne H. Jones, Barbara Smith, Director Million Women March Communications, (I worked directly under Barbara) and together we handled more than 1,000 media people who came out to see what the women were doing on Ben- SCOOP U.S.A. every week at my home or business o I want the convenience of receiving o 26 weeks - Only $20.00 o 52 weeks - Only $35.00 Call (215) 232-5974 Fax (215) 236-2945 Mail Scoop U.S.A. There’s just so many great women who came out of Philadelphia in the past and those outstanding women who live here in 2012. Then there’s the nameless women block captains, leaders of non-profits, the women crossing guards, the women doctors, lawyers, business owners and heads of corporations here and there, go ‘head. Keep up the great work. Represent! Let me not leave out the fabulous women of the Philadelphia Police Department, Fire Department and in our city agencies, like Jazelle Jones one of our City Deputy Managing Directors. Women. Women are doing it in Philadelphia. There is one other special lady of Philadelphia I want to shine the spotlight on. South Philadelphia businesswoman Elizabeth Roberts marked her mother’s 103rd birthday with a special celebration at the Simpson House at Belmont and Edgley Road Saturday, March 10, 2012. Wydella Riley, the birthday lady, was born in Accomac County, Virginia on March 10, 1909. Moving to Philadelphia as a young woman, Mrs. Riley earned an income, working as a domestic until she was 80 years old in Philadelphia and in the surrounding suburbs, helping to raise many children along the way. A woman of strong faith, for over sixty years, she was a very active member of The Historic Tindley Temple United Methodist Church, located at Broad and Fitzwater Streets in South Philadelphia. She served in a number of capacities at the church, including working in the soup kitchen ministry, and serving as an Acolyte, which leads Celebrating our 52nd Anniversary the choir out of service every Sunday, at the conclusion of the service. She was also a very active member of the United Methodist Women’s organization. Today as a resident at the Simpson House just off Conshohocken and City Avenue, Mrs. Wydella Riley is still described by her daughter as being, “very loving and looking forward to each and every day she has on earth.” The birthday celebration for Mrs. Wydella Riley went off without a hitch and the Birthday lady of the hour, her daughter Liz Roberts and all her friends sang happy 103rd birthday. I dedicate this column this week in the SCOOP U.S.A. Community Newspaper to all the great women of Philadelphia and surrounding areas, particularly my sisters, who strive in the vineyard to make a difference every day. We feed the poor. We collect clothing for the homeless. We open shelters for abused women with children, the hardest group of women to obtain housing for. We take care of our babies, (the ones of us who are drug free and striving to be good mothers). We uplift our men, those that are not hating on our men. We help hold up our churches, even when the men are missing in the pews in some cases. And we legislate in the state house, go ‘head Rosita, Rev. Louise, Cherelle, Vanessa, Michelle and Margo. ---And in the Pennsylvania state senate, go ‘head Senator Shirley, Senator LeAnna. Do your thing ladies. So as I look back on Women’s History Month 2012, I salute all the fabulous women of Philadelphia and the metropolitan area. FYI---Next week it’s back to politics, stay tuned. Anthony H. Williams said today that voters who do not have a current valid photo ID should take the steps now so their vote can count in the November presidential election. Under the new law, anyone seeking to vote must present a designated form of identification every time they go to vote, starting with this November’s general election. Williams opposed the legislation and plans to challenge its legality. “We will take this matter to the courts and continue to fight this outrageous assault on our most fundamental American right, but in the meantime it’s critical that citizens who want to vote are prepared,” Williams said. “Individuals can take steps right now to obtain a free photo ID, and my staff and I are here to help folks through the entire process.” Constituents may stop by Williams’ district offices at 2901 Island Ave., Suite 100 in Philadelphia (215-492-2980) Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; at 2103 Snyder Ave. in Philadelphia (215755-9185) Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and 419 Church Lane in Yeadon (610-284-7335) Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Comprehensive information is also available at www.senatoranthonyhwilliams.com “Many long hard battles have been fought to secure the right to vote for all of us,” Williams said. “Too many have fought too long for us to allow this most recent assault on our fundamental rights to go unchallenged, but voters must be prepared if the voter ID law holds up. I urge everyone to defend their right to vote and make sure that they and their loved ones have proper ID to present at the polls.” More information on Sen. Anthony H. Maya Angelou visits Cheyney by Junious Ricardo Stanton Poet, author, actress, director film maker and cultural icon Maya Angelou visited Cheyney University last week as part of a program to support the university’s Keystone Honors Program. Expounding on the theme “You Are A Rainbow in the Clouds.”; to an enthusiastic standing room only audience in the Marion Anderson Center Dr. Angelou shared personal experiences that helped shape her life and the people in her life who refused to give up on her, who supported her unconditionally. She talked about the resilience of Africans in this country and the need for us to reaffirm the sanctity ourselves and not degrade ourselves. Reciting classic poetry from a variety of artists like Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, William Shakespear, quoting James Baldwin and reading her own poetry Dr. Angelou was the personification of a venerated elder admonishing an adoring and receptive audience to believe in themselves, to assert and actualize their greatness to make the world a better place. She encouraged her audience to discover the power of poetry especially African-American poets, Recovering from a recent illness Dr. Angelou informed the audience that her doctors had advised her not to travel or exert herself. She told them once she learned about the Keystone Honors program and the type of young people it was turning out she had to come. SCOOP March 30, 2012 3/28/12 9:59 PM Page 3 Walking while Black ChildWat ch Celebrating our 52nd Anniversary marian wright edelman Every parent raising Black sons knows the dilemma: deciding how soon to have the talk. Choosing the words to explain to your beautiful child that there are some people who will never like or trust him just because of who he is—including some who should be there to protect him, but will instead have the power to hurt him. Training him how to walk, what to say, and how to act so he won’t seem like a threat. Teaching him that the burden of deflating stereotypes and reassuring other people’s ignorance will always fall on him, and while that isn’t fair, in some cases it may be the only way to keep him safe and alive. But sometimes it isn’t enough. It wasn’t enough to protect Trayvon Martin. Seventeen-year-old Trayvon’s English teacher said he was “an A and B student who majored in cheerfulness.” Trayvon loved building models and taking things apart, his favorite subject was math, and he dreamed of becoming a pilot and an engineer. Instead, he was gunned down by a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain vigilante who profiled him, followed him, and shot him in the chest. SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, March 30, 2012 - abling vigilantes to provoke conflicts, resolve them with deadly force, and avoid ever having to set foot in a courtroom.” The fear in Trayvon’s death is that this is exactly what has happened so far: that the story told by witnesses, phone records, and Zimmerman’s violent past and earlier complaints during his neighborhood patrols shows an overzealous armed aggressor who followed Trayvon even after police told him to stop, chased Trayvon down when the frightened boy tried to walk away from the stranger following him, and then shot the unarmed, 100-pounds-lighter teenager while neighbors said they heard a child crying for help. The prospect now that Zimmerman might never set foot in a courtroom for the shooting has caused widespread frustration and fury. Just as sadly, Trayvon’s death was not unique. In 2008 and 2009, 2,582 Black children and teens were killed by gunfire. Black children and teens were only 15 percent of the child population, but 45 percent of the 5,740 child and teen gun deaths in those two years. Black males 15 to 19 years-old were eight times as likely as White males to be gun homicide victims. The outcry over Trayvon’s death is absolutely right and just. We need the same sense of outrage over every one of these child deaths. Above all, we need a nation where these senseless deaths no longer happen. But we won’t get it until we have common-sense gun laws that protect children instead of guns and don’t allow people like George Zimmerman to take the law into their own hands. We won’t get it until we have a culture that sees every child as a child of God and sacred, instead of seeing some as expendable statistics, and others as threats and “no good” because of the color of their skin or because they chose to walk home wearing a hood in the rain. And we won’t get it until enough of us—parents and grandparents—stand up and tell our political leaders that the National Rifle Association should not be in charge of our neighborhoods, streets, gun laws, and values. In Trayvon’s case, his father Tracy speaks for what his family needs: “The family is calling for justice. We don’t want our son’s death to be in vain.” I hope that enough voices will ensure that it is not. His killer, George Zimmerman, saw the teenager on the street and called the police to report he looked “like he’s up to no good.” At the time Trayvon was walking home from the nearby 7-11 carrying a bottle of Arizona iced tea and a bag of Skittles for his younger stepbrother, leaving many people to guess that the main thing he was doing that made him look “no good” was wearing a hooded sweatshirt in the rain and walking while Black. George Zimmerman’s decisions made that suspicious enough to be a death sentence. Now there is widespread outrage over the senseless killing of a young Black man who was doing nothing wrong and the fact that the man who killed him has not been arrested. People are trying to make sense of the series of gun laws that allowed George Zimmerman to act as he did—starting with the Florida laws that allowed someone like Zimmerman, who had previously been charged for resisting arrest with violence and battery on a police officer, to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon in the first place. Many more questions are being raised about Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which also has been described as the “shoot first, ask questions later” law, and gives the benefit of the doubt to Zimmerman and others claiming “self-defense” by allowing people who say they are in imminent danger to defend themselves. Some states limit this defense to people’s own homes, but others, like Florida, allow it anywhere. As Josh Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, says, this law “has turned common law—and common sense—on its head by en- LIHEAP Deadline extended PECO’s low-income customers have a few extra weeks to apply for funding to help pay for their energy bills. Pennsylvania has extended the deadline to apply for Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) grants. But with only $104 million left in LIHEAP assistance across Pennsylvania, PECO customers must apply now before time or money runs out. PECO customers can apply at their local Department of Public Welfare office. Customers can also contact PECO at 1-800-34HELP-4, visit www.peco.com/liheap, or visit PECO's Main Office Building at 2301 Market Street in Philadelphia for more information. “The LIHEAP program provides a wonderful opportunity for low-income customers to catch up on their energy bills,” said Mark Alden, vice president of Customer Operations. “We have many programs to help our customers when they are in need, and we encourage them to take advantage of the programs that are right for them.” So far this season more than $5 million in assistance has helped more than 22,000 PECO electric and natural gas customers pay their bills, but this support is significantly less than the $11 million in assistance provided by this time last year. Low-income PECO customers must act now to secure funding to help avoid service termination. The most important action a customer can take to avoid termination is to contact the company at 1-888480-1533 immediately when they become aware that they will not be able to make their scheduled payment. The most options are available for customers before an account becomes seriously or chronically past due. LIHEAP is a Federal program that provides assistance to individuals who are having trouble paying their electric, natural gas or other energy bills. Homeowners, renters, and subsi- dized housing tenants may be eligible. The program provides cash grants, up to $1,000 per customer, through a direct payment to a vendor, such as a utility like PECO. LIHEAP also has money allocated for the Crisis program. With a maximum Crisis grant of $300, funding will help customers reinstate service that has been shut off for non-payment or stop termination action on customers with an arrearage. Last year, LIHEAP helped about 45,000 PECO customers with more than 111,000 grants totaling $23.4 million in assistance. PECO manages the largest and most comprehensive Universal Services program in the state. In addition to LIHEAP, PECO has many other programs to help customers manage their energy costs and save money. Other assistance programs include: The Customer Assistance Program (CAP): A discounted rate for low-income customers. The Matching Energy Assistance Fund (MEAF): A program funded by voluntary contributions of citizens and matched dollar-for-dollar by PECO for up to $1,000 in total assistance for those who qualify. Low Income Usage Reduction Program (LIURP): A program that provides year-round conservation and weatherization assistance for qualified households. Customer Assistance and Referral Evaluation Services (CARES): A referral and information service designed to assist customers who have temporary personal or financial hardships that prevent the payment of their utility bill. PECO customers who are not eligible for low-and fixed-income assistance, but are having trouble managing their energy costs should also consider taking advantage of other programs including budget billing. Budget billing makes short-term fluctuations in monthly bills much easier to handle by dividing annual energy costs evenly throughout the year. All customers also can save money on their monthly energy bills by using energy as efficiently as possi- 3 ble. (Bernie Madoff is only in jail because he turned himself in.) We are in a constant state of war and have been since WWII. We are led to believe (as in all past wars) these wars (and potential wars) are righteously being waged for freedom and safety. Despite the lies of the government, the military and the telecommunications industry, we are under constant surveillance, spied upon, with citizens informing on each other; and we have been for quite some time; even before 9-11! The bogus pretext for all this spying and surveillance is of course “national security” and the “war on terror”. No one ever raises the question, how can you wage war on terror, when terror is neither a place nor a people? Terror is a tactic, a tactic the shadow governments of the ruling elites (whether its the KKK or the Illuminati) have used for millennia. The mind control apparatus' (organized religion, media and educational system) jobs are to dumb us down, keep us afraid and fearful (full of fear) so the authorities can “protect” us from the bogymen they created in the first place; like The Devil, or real people like Osama bin-Laden, Saddam Hussein or Joseph Koney. One way they keep us under constant observation is through technology, the Internet, social media like Google, Facebook, Twitter and cable television. These inventions are the tools being used by the corporations, intelligence agencies and shadow government to spy on our every move, monitor our thoughts and activities, along with the use of cameras, satellites and other devices. The most sinister aspect of all this is, we have been tricked into buying the very gizmos and gadgets and using the very tools, software, platforms and applications employed to pry into our privacy and indoctrinate us into the New World Order ! We are actually assisting and cooperating in our own demise as free minded sentient beings. We are being conditioned for servitude, psychological conformity, mindlessness and peonage under the guise of progress, convenience, having “friends” and security. This is not just a local or USA phenomenon. The same thing or worse is happening all over the world. Europe is increasingly under surveillance with cameras and other devices. “Europe's largest 'white hat' hacker group, the Chaos Computer Club (CCC), recently reverse engineered and analyzed an anonymously submitted malware program. Nothing out of the ordinary for security researchers. However, to its surprise, the group discovered this particular malware was commissioned by German police and used to spy on German citizens. As if state-sponsored eavesdropping were not enough, this malware has also been found with remote control or backdoor functionalities that enable the uploading and executing of other programs, including the siphoning of personal data. Most concerning is the news that a laptop had the malware added by the German authorities when the user passed through customs at an airport... The German action followed the leaking of documents revealing via Wikileaks that the Bavarian police had commissioned the homebased security firm DigiTech to design a Trojan for its own use. What the CCC report and others show is that the Trojan program, Backdoor:W32/R2D2.A (also known as 0zapftis), was being used to go much farther than plain wiretapping.” State-Sponsored Malware Revealed in Eu- 9 PM 9:30 10 PM 10:30 11 PM 11:30 The Insider Undercover Boss: Yan- CSI: NY: Flash Pop (CC) Blue Bloods: No Ques(CC) kee Candle (CC) tions Asked (CC) Eyewitness Late Show News (CC) Wheel of Fortune Action News (CC) Nightline (CC) NBC 10 News (CC) The Tonight Show Shark Tank Shark’s large Primetime: What Would 20/20 (CC) offer; renting toys. The fact is millions of Africans living in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other regions of Central Africa have perished because of the ongoing wars being fought over minerals and resources such oil, gold, uranium and specifically coltan the pivotal mineral used to make computers, cell phones, notebooks, laptops, iPads etc. How many Africans had to die for us to sport the latest smart phones, iPhones and laptops? How many Africans have been killed so Big Brother can expand its global spy capabilities? These gizmos are merely a part of an even larger network of spying and surveillance. “ There have been a series of related and interesting developments in the field of global intelligence gathering. The NSA is building a brand new data center in Utah in order to connect with some new intelligence sharing systems such as the Defense Intelligence Enterprise and the Global Information Grid. The Global Information Grid is a massive military system which pulls information from every piece of sensory military hardware in space, land, sea, or air and manages it. The Defense Intelligence Enterprise takes which is already in place and shares that data with national intelligence agencies and their respective international partners. This behemoth is nothing but trouble as citizens around the world are being caught up in this information whorehouse. I am sure that most people would not appreciate their private conversations end up on foreign military or intelligence networks.” Trapped In The Grid: How Net-Centric Devices And Appliances Provide Voluminous Information To Intelligence Agencies And Their Business Partners http://stratrisks.com/geostrat/4827 This is Big Brother mind control at its best. The ruling elites knew no one was going to knowingly buy something that is going to be used to enslave them or spy on them. So they had to develop a way to make the products “hip” “Kool” and “to die for” so we would buy them. So they did what they did to market cigarettes in the 30' 40's 50's and 60's, they made it appealing and desirable. They targeted specific groups like the college kids, younger people and certain professionals to get them in the pipeline. Once they became “hip” and utilitarian the funds and marketing were made available to popularize them. We have been feed a bunch of lies about Google and Facebook and the other tentacles in the spy network to induce us to buy them and use their products like gmail.com,YouTube and Twitter. We have been conditioned to think this is progress, that they are merely the latest consumer products and status symbols, when in reality they are part of the shadow government's surveillance network and global spy grid. Am I saying these inventions were created by the elites? Not necessarily, they just backed them once they figured out how they could exploit them for the New World Order. Often, that key is stolen by the streets, inappropriate friends, poor education, or bad parenting. They need encouragement, attention, and love. Young Kids need to be held in someone’s lap at least once a day for 45 minutes being read to. Books bring fantasy, information, and the comfort of someone who cares to spend time with the child. Older children need that same time expanse to talk about their day and how they feel about what they are seeing. School and social experiences are everything to our children. Their little hurts and triumphs may seem silly to us, but to them, and their life experience, those events are formidable. Every disappointment or achievement is a brick in that child’s character and outlook. Every child may not be college material, but each has potential. And many have a lot of talent just waiting to be discovered. Part of our job as parents and people who care is to discover those latent abilities and offer children a chance to utilize what God gave them. Too often we assume, because a child has not been shining in school that is the best he or she can do. Not true and we have the responsibility to prove to that child, (or children), that he or she, can do way better. Look for the best in a child and gift the child with a window onto that best. Teachers cannot match the influence of parents. We have a job and it’s in every American’s interest that we succeed. harry polis junious r. stanton “Everyone is interested in your private information, but it is not private any longer. The Internet and device providers have changed their terms of service so that all data that you use on their networks or devices belong to them, somehow. This is precious data to them as they can either sell it or use it for profiling purposes. Everything we do on the Internet leaves a trail back to us. Search engine entries, shopping lists, e-mail addresses and so much more which is ripe for the taking. Now governments and their intelligence agencies want a piece of that action and they have new tools to ascertain our intentions and possible future actions.” Trapped In The Grid: How Net-Centric Devices And Appliances Provide Voluminous Information To Intelligence Agencies And Their Business Partners http://stratrisks.com/geostrat/4827 Eric Arthur Blair who wrote under the pen name George Orwell penned a novel called 1984 which was published in 1949. In it he depicted a dystopian society in the not too distant future when a cunning central government used constant surveillance, misinformation, fear, nationalism and the threat of perpetual war to control the people. The main character in the novel was named Winston Smith. His job was to rewrite and reinterpret history by painting it in the perspective of the ruling elites. The central government conditioned and brainwashed the people to accept lies and a language of disinformation as part of their every day existence. Winston commits the crime of thinking for himself thus he becomes a target for more surveillance, intrigue and intervention. That intervention included deception, betrayal and torture in an attempt to get Winston to confirm, enjoy servitude and an induced semi-comatose state to go along with the Big Brother societal program. What sprang from Blair's imagination exists here and now in real time reality. We are living in the exact social environment and psychological milieu Blair (Orwell) described. Big Brother is alive and well in the US of A. Since the shift towards a totalitarian police state has been fairly gradual (up until recent years) and the corporate media a key component of the fascist Big Brother propaganda program is being used to distract us, lie to us and create a false reality at the behest of the ruling elites; we didn't/don't see it coming. We're like frogs in a pot of water where the heat is being increased incrementally rather than all at once. Nevertheless their plan is to cook us to death, it will just take longer. We are living in the exact same world envisioned by George Orwell. We are seeing a gradual decay of society, we are constantly spied upon by the government, we are viewed as threats if we dissent or criticize the powers that be and the government uses brutal and lethal force to put down any type of resistance and opposition to their program. Winston who was a fairly well of member of the party in control lived this same reality! We are in the grip of a fascist police state. The Community College of Philadelphia’s Center for Male Engagement in collaboration with the Black Male Development Symposium presents The R.O.A.D. to College. This one day series of workshops, geared toward graduating African American male high school seniors and their family members, will assist participants in learning and understanding the expectations of being a college student while gaining strategies and techniques to enroll in and successfully complete their college career. She was a phenomenal woman for the times she lived in and would be such if she lived today. Born in Philadelphia in 1848, Caroline was the eldest daughter of William and Letitia Still. William Still was a prominent businessman and abolitionist who wrote about his activities in the book, “The Underground Railroad.” Born into a family of strong, fearless Africans who took their own freedom and assisted countless others in taking theirs, it was Caroline’s destiny to become the accomplished pioneer that she was. In addition to being a renowned abolitionist, William Still supported his family through coal mining investments and operated a stove store. Education was very important in the Still Family and William made sure his children were well-educated. Caroline attended Mrs. Henry Gordon’s Pri- Caroline Still Wyley Anderson vate School, the Friends Raspberry Alley School and the Institute for Colored Youth which eventually became Cheyney State College. Mentally gifted, Caroline went off to Oberlin College at age 16 where she was the only African woman in her class and graduated from the Literary Course in 1868. She then returned to Philadelphia to teach. In 1869, Caroline married Edward A. Wyley, formerly enslaved in Alabama, whom she met while attending Oberlin. To this union two children were born -- William and Letitia. After Wyley’s death in 1873, Caroline moved to Washington, D.C. where she taught music, art and elocution at Howard University. While teaching at Howard she was inspired to become a physician and enrolled in Howard’s College of Medicine. After one semester, she transferred to the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1876 where she was the second woman of African descent to graduate. She graduated in the spring of 1878 and interned at Boston’s New England Hospital for Women and Children. In 1879, Caroline returned to Philadelphia where she established her own private medical practice, becoming one of Pennsylvania’s first female doctors of African descent. Through her practice, she provided much needed medical care to Philadelphia’s Black community. Remember, Caroline began her journey in higher education right after the Civil War when people of African descent were not yet considered Americans, had no rights, and women were still considered the property of their husbands. What a phenomenal woman! Caroline married Rev. Matthew Anderson, a Doctor of Divinity and founder of North Philadelphia’s Berean Presbyterian Church, in 1880. The couple had three surviving children -- Helen, Maude, and Margaret. Her union with Anderson inspired her work as a community activist and leader. Caroline worked side by side with her husband to serve Philadelphia's poor See “Anderson” page 12 SCOOP lege student. The new hour long reality TV series premieres on Saturday, March 31st at 10pm est./9pm cst., which stars supermodel and business woman Beverly Johnson. "For All You've Done", written by Freda Battle was originally recorded and released in 1998 independently by her city wide recording aggregation Freda Battle and The Temple Worshippers. The song was recorded in a live setting at the then New Covenant Christian Church (now Jubilee Christian Church) in Boston for the group's debut project FOR ALL YOU'VE DONE FOR ME. "It was only supposed to be a one time thing", said Battle in an earlier interview with Stellar Award nominated gospel radio announcer Liz Black, "however we've been together since 1997". It was "For All You've Done" that garnered the group national notoriety, which resulted in the group becoming mainstays within the gospel music industry. In 2006, "For All You've Done" was re-recorded by Freda Battle & The Temple Worshippers and produced by Grammy®, Dove and Stellar Award winning recording artist/producer Israel Houghton. The song was the 2nd radio single off of the group's 3rd project HERE IS OUR PRAISE on Axiom Records. "For All You've Done" is considered among gospel music lovers and fans of Battle a favorite among her extensive song catalog. To date, it is still sung in Sunday morning worship church services around the country. A third generation choir director, Battle has written over 200 songs and hold songwriting credits for her group's 3 currently released albums FOR ALL YOU'VE DONE FOR ME (1998-Independent), SERIOUS PRAISE (2002- Axiom Records) and HERE IS OUR PRAISE (2006- Axiom Records). Additionally, Battle secured national songwriting placements for the Thomas Dorsey (known as the father of Gospel Music) National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses (If God Be For Us), Gospel Music Workshop of America: Live In Milwaukee (Here Is Our Praise), Grammy®-nominated and Stellar Award winning legendary female group Witness (It Will Be Alright), Stellar Award nominated project Daryl Coley presents: Here II Praise (Don't Be Afraid & He Is The Way), Rodney Posey ( He's Worthy), Patrick Lundy & the Minister's of Music (Oh How I Love ), AS ONE (God Will Take Care of You), Leonard Burks & the Voices of Praise (Because of You), Heaven Sent (Tell It), King James Version ( Love Song & God Will See You Through), and majority of her protégé Clarence Powell debut project MADE IT AFTER ALL on Axiom Records, among many others. It is unfortunate that we no not always support each other like we should but at times we show real old-fashioned love like in the fifties and sixties. Anyway, I’m talking about the Trayvon Martin case. Once again in our lives folks are showing real love for the Martin Family in Florida, Mew York Philly and all over the U.S.A. You have black, white, Hispanic and Asian folks outraged about what happened to this young man that went to the store to get a bag of skittles and an iced tea. Why did he get shot by a Town Watch person that had the nerve to have a gun? Just think. If the script was flipped even it were me with all my connects with folks and my Girard Avenue status, I would still not have had the right to shot and kill someone without being locked up and going through due process of the law. That’s what the laws are for. When I think about it, it is not just Negro Col. Charles Young Post 682 159 E. Why did this man have a gun in the first place? Did he go through any type of civil relations training or weapons training? It is obvious that he didn’t because if he had, he would not have had any reason to shoot. Now I know it’s been said that he shot in self-defense when you have a gun and a child has a bag of skittles not to mention that he followed Trayvon, Trayvon did not follow him. All Zimmerman had to do was to show his gun and that young man would have been putty in his hands. There was absolutely no reason for him to shoot that young man. Now I know that some people will say, “well why must Rev. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Minister Farrakhan and other be called in. Well, you tell me who should we call? Somebody has got to speak up for us. I know that our young people are killing each other and I know they’ve got issue, but so do the children of all other races and nationalities. All of our children could use a chill pill. We need to stop judging each other and start pulling together and teach our young folks – all of them together so that things like this will not happen to anybody. Case closed! Very simply we all need a little love – the old-fashioned kind of unconditional love for all of our children. It makes me think about the wellness convention when Actor Allen Payne said that our young people are insane because they are all angry because of lack of love – not things, love. They can’t be loved by a pair of sneakers or a Jay-Z CD. They need a hug from Mom and Dad or Grandmom or their Uncle or Aunt and not no sideway CAMDEN, N.J. Aquamarine is the stone for the month of March In legends, aquamarine has its origin in the treasure chests of the mermaid. It is though to bring good luck and fortune to sailors. It is believed that if a person dreams of aquamarine he or she will meet new friends. According to ancient traditions aquamarine will guarantee a long and happy marriage. A symbol of youth and happiness, aquamarine derives its name from the Latin “aqua” and “mare,” meaning water and sea. Allegedly its powers one increased if the stone is soaked in water. ‘Aquamarine is reported to increase one’s psychic ability and enhance concentration; thus it is suggested that students carry the stone while studying. Roman physicians prescribed aquamarine to treat overindulgence, headaches, neck problems and water retention. In some cultures, aquamarine is believed to be the stone of a spirit who must grant the wish of any person wearing it March 30th You are analytical and give a great deal of thought and careful consideration to a problem, before doing anything important. The rest of the fish can be cut into strips. If you like, fillet the fish. However, this is not necessary since you will likely not be able to eat the fish once it has been pressed anyway. 2) Press the fish pieces in the hand-crank press until just a watery, oily mush is left in the bottom of the press. Turn the crank until the press is as far down as it will go. You can then empty the fish sludge into a bucket of distilled water before pressing more fish in the press. 3) Strain the distilled water and fish mush. You can use a sieve or pour the mixture through a screen held over another bucket. Either way, the fish flesh, bones and skin will remain in the strainer, while the oil and water will pass through. 4) Allow the water to evaporate. The film, “Bully” is the controversial movie that has gotten the attention of many because of its “R” rating – making it difficult for young teens to go see the film unless they have parental guidance. Over 13 million American kids will be bullied this year, making it the most common form of violence experienced by young people in the nation. The new documentary film BULLY, directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch, brings human scale to this startling statistic, offering an intimate, unflinching look at how bullying has touched five kids and their families. BULLY is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America’s bullying crisis. Filmed over the course of the 2009/2010 school year, BULLY opens a window onto the pained and often endangered lives of bullied kids, revealing a problem that transcends geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders. It documents the responses of teachers and administrators to aggressive behaviors that defy “kids will be kids” clichés, and it captures a growing movement among parents and youths to change how bullying is handled in schools, in communities and in society as a whole. http://thebullyproject.com. Spady 2012 "In Johannesburg, I moved in circles where common sense and practical experience were more important than high academic qualifications. Even as I was receiving my degree, I realized that hardly anything I had learned at university seemed relevant in my new environment. At the university, teachers had shied away from topics like racial oppression, lack of opportunities for Africans, and the nest of laws and regulations that subjugate the black man. But in my life in Johannesburg, I confronted these things every day. No one had ever suggested to me how to go about removing the evils of racial prejudice, and I had to learn by trial and errors." ... Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela Value of Mass Education in Society Writing in his informative autobiography, The Honorable Nelson Mandela (now in his 90's) mentions a teacher named Sidelsky 'who I came to respect greatly and treated me with enormous kindness." According to Mandela, he taught, "Only mass education, he used to say, would free my people, arguing that an educated man could not be oppressed because he would think for himself. Ht told me over and over again that becoming a successful attorney and thereby a model of achievement for my people was the most worthwhile path I could follow." Mass demonstrations following the murder of a seventeen year old black man named Trayvon Martin, wearing a dark gray hoodie and carrying skittles to munch on during the second half of the football game, served to heighten the consciousness of millions of people around the world. The fact that this form of mass education and mass participation (Penn Black students marched from DuBois College House to Love Park on Monday) rejuvenated a spirit of resistance, righteous indignation and Million Hoodie Marches all over the U.S.A. only demonstrates how Black people's longing for justice, freedom and equality is historically rooted and of a protracted nature. How many students, teachers, neighbors, coaches and parents have seized the opportunity to democratize knowledge about African American history and education? At the very moment many commentators were talking about the failure of African American students, three prominent African American educators wrote a book, Young, Gifted and Black: promoting high achievements Among African American Students. Drs. Theresa Perry, Claude Steele and Asa Hilliard, 111 wrote: " This book is a unique kind of collaboration. We came together as three scholars, with different disciplinary backgrounds and perspectives, to explore in new ways an issue of urgent importance and national debate; the experience and achievement of African American students in school. We have written our essays separately. Each in the work of a single author with a single voice. But we present our work together because we believe that juxtaposing our pieces one against the other will open up a space in the national conversation on the issue that is new and needed." The authors note: "We do not agree on all matters, and we speak for ourselves. But we believe that readers who read our work together will see the connections between the pieces and hope that our collective work encompasses both a new kind of national conversation and new research from a variety of productive directions---historical, psychological and educational." Towards African American Philosophies of Education in the 21st Century Dr. Theresa Perry poses a series of questions concerning the relationship between the historical experience of enslavement and the kind of education for freedom that was advocated in the previous era. What relevance has this in the era of Trayvon Martin, Rashida Long , Colo , Ponce and Dave? Perry asks the following burning questions? *Among contemporary African American youth, could this philosophy of eduction have the power to make academic achievement consistent with being African American? *Can it still play a role in the identity formation of African American children? *Could it play a central role in motivating contemporary African Americans to pursue education vigorously? *If it is true media play a central role in the construction of racial and gender identities, can a counter-narrative about African Americans as intellectuals have sufficient power to contest the negative narratives about African Americans that are expressed in the media and encoded in the ideologies and practices of schools. [Here you can use the Trayvon Martin case to discuss literature on black/white male dismissals and expended audit studies in school districts as varied as Philadelphia, Chicago, Camden, Chester, Brooklyn, San Francisco and Harlem. There have been numerous studies showing how young black male teenagers are pushed out of school at a time when every high school graduation counts. How does bias against Hip Hop culture negatively impact African Americans? What are the results from studies of teachers who incorporate Hip Hop culture into the curricula? Given the highly charged debates surrounding the Trayvon case an excellent opportunity exists to develop unique pedagogical strategies.] *What would it take for this historic philosophy of education to be systematically and intentionally passed on in families , community based organizations, and schools? *Under what circumstances could it be passed on in a multiracial, multicultural school community? *How can the philosophy of achievement enter into dialogue with and be used to critique the explanatory models and their variations that have been used to critique the explanatory models and their variations that have been used and continue to be used to discuss school performance of African Americans and other children. *How would it be used in the development of a theory of achievement for African Americans at the beginning of the 21st century? Literacy Affirms Your Humanity Finally, historicizing African American's quest for education, Dr. Perry explains, "For the slave, literacy was more than the symbol of freedom, it was freedom. It affirmed their humanity, their personhood. To be able to read and write was an intrinsic good, as well as a mighty weapon in the slave's struggle for freedom. Literate slaves filed legal petitions, protesting and challenging that environment, they forget passes for themselves and others, thus allowing escape from the horrors of slavery. Literate slaves read newspapers and pamphlets and kept themselves and the slave community informed about the antislavery movement and the war. Denmark Vesey, Nat Turner, David Walkerk and other literate slaves led rebellions and wrote pamphlets and tracts denouncing and exposing the slave system. ... The philosophy of education that developed was informed by the particular ways in which literacy and education were implicated in the oppressions of African Americans." Education and freedom represent a powerful dialectic. Committed to Education Temple University is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for students in North Philadelphia. He came in as a humble King and the crowd was enthusiastic about his reign. They wholeheartedly accepted him as their King and they demonstrated their enthusiasm. For they cried out, “Hosanna to the son of David; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.” They tore down palm branches and waved them. They even made a welcoming carpet on the road with their coats. They were probably called “fanatics” by the religious establishment and curious onlookers. You know, it is important to keep our enthusiasm for Christ alive. For I believe some of those same folk who shouted “Hosanna” shouted “Crucify Him”, five days later. And many of us today have lost our enthusiasm for Christ. Now most of us when we accepted Jesus as our Savior did so enthusiastically. But then some of us allowed Satan to get in the way and gradually our joy, vibrancy and faithfulness dwindled. We begin to deal with Jesus with a cold attitude and before we know it the excitement is gone the parade is over and the joy bells cease to ring. But then, there are others among us who have kept the excitement and increased their enthusiasm. They are still faithful. They are still active. They can still say, “Everyday with Jesus is Sweeter than the day before.” My brothers and sisters, it is of the utmost importance that we as Christians keep our enthusiasm for Christ alive. Many of us in the Church have lost our Enthusiasm not because we’re upset with Jesus, but because we’re upset with one another. But you don’t go there to pass the Deacon and Deaconess test. You don’t go there to pass the Trustee or Choir test. You don’t go there to pass the Ushers or Missionaries test. Nor should you go there to meet the Pastor’s requirements. No, you should be a member of the Church because you have been born again and you are enthused about doing God’s Will. If you’re enthused about Jesus you go to Church on time. If you’re enthused abut Jesus you don’t fuss and fight. If you’re enthused about Jesus you’ll want to do things right. Anderson Continued from page 5 women and children. Have you ever asked yourself why and how Bill Gates of Microsoft and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook were able to create a virtual monopoly in their particular marketplace? It's because the shadow government pumped money into them and uses them along with the other telecommunications giants they own to be part of a total global surveillance system to spy and keep track of all who use them. So the smart phone, iPhone or iPad you are bragging about and carrying around with you is really Big Brother's way of keeping tabs on you. But that's not their ultimate goal. African Americans who farmed or attempted to farm (or their heirs) may be eligible for a sizeable cash payment or loan forgiveness from this $1.25 billion class action settlement. This final phase of the Black Farmers Discrimination Settlement (sometimes called “Pigford II”) is only for people who tried to file a late claim in the original Pigford case. The absolute, final deadline for filing a claim is May 11, 2012. This is the last chance for those eligible to get payments and loan forgiveness from the Black Farmers Discrimination Settlement. Lawyers appointed by the court are holding meetings around the country to provide those who are included in the settlement with free help filing claims. Completing a claim may take some time, so those who think they are included should get more information now. For more information, including about how to file a claim and meeting locations: call toll-free 1877-810-8110 or visit www.BlackFarmerCase.com.
