A few of us took time to visit French Lake Auto Parts in Annandale, MN. Stocking over 100 acres of classic cars the inventory changes daily. They have vehicles in their yard dating back to the 1920’s, many with usable parts. The yard is clean and well organized, making it easy for you to find the parts you need. Customers are welcome to pull their own parts. The staff was so nice and we really enjoyed the tour they gave us of the vintage classics. Concerned Auto Recyclers of Wisconsin News Respectfully submitted Peter Krumenauer 4 June/July 2016 Association News URG Annual Training Conference Recap By Rob Koepp I recently attended the URG Annual Training Conference in San Antonio, Texas. Meetings were held April 29th, and 30th. Being the avid golfers we are my crew, and I showed up a day early to play in the golf tournament. A great time was had by all at a beautiful course located right at the resort. We started Friday morning off multiple seminars at the same time you should attend. I also attended a seminar by our old friend Dj Harrington. He is always good. He makes it fun, people are always laughing, and he is changing it up. The next morning I attended the key note speaker which was a man name Jimmy Morris. If any of you have seen the Disney movie URG. You name it. It was there. For me the best part of these things is still the networking. Growing up going to these things like the Upper Midwest, ARA, URG, and I even attended the IT Convention years ago when it was in Chicago I realized you learn so much from talking with other owners, managers, salespeople, or any other employ- with a key note speaker named Danny White. Any of you NFL buffs would know him as an ex quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys from 1974-1989. He talked about surrounding yourself with good people (your team). This always results in a better outcome. He also spoke about even when you are surrounded by good people, you being the quarterback (manager/owner) could make an “audible” or “quick decision” and change the outcome to bad. Work together! This was followed up by a many other meetings to choose from. I recommend always bringing other people to sit in the meetings you can’t attend to take notes. There are always named “The Rookie” you saw his a glimpse of his life. Jimmy is the real life Rookie. He spoke of not giving up on your dreams and that your whole life could change due to stupid bet with some kids. When the crowd wasn’t laughing during this you could hear a pin drop in the room. I highly suggest hearing him speak if you ever have the chance. This by far was the highlight of the weekend for me, and the people I brought with. ee. There is so much knowledge and information in this industry that the easiest way to learn is by talking with other people in it. Things change so fast one person cannot keep up. June/July 2016 All in all if you have never attended a URG Conference you should put it on your bucket list. Other than the seminars the tradeshow was excellent. There were user group sessions from all of the management systems. Informational sessions from 5 Concerned Auto Recyclers of Wisconsin News Association News From the Secretary’s Desk By Sandy Dumke Spring is here and the flowers are blooming and everyone is talking about their gardens and mowing the lawn. The yard owners are getting the yards cleaned up after the winter’s normal messiness. We have the 2016 Upper Midwest Convention in the books. I hope everyone that was at Pam’s enjoyed themselves and learned many good ideas to implement in their yards. ers and sales people this will be a good Annual Meeting to attend. This is a chance for you, as a business owner, to send your people to learn the secrets of successful sales people. Be sure to involve and encourage your people in promoting your business and increasing income through successful sales. Please join us to make your CARS Association great again. I want to send a big Thank You to Pat & Mike and the whole crew from Pam’s. They were very welcoming and helpful. I also want to thank the venders and sponsors. They spend a lot of time and money to present us with a good trade show. Please keep them all in mind when you are looking for a product or service. The tour of IRT was wonderful and informative. I did not realize the process that it takes to handle catalytic converters and the other things they recycle. Scrap Metal Market Report May 2016 Our next project will be the Bob Hoffmann Memorial Golf Outing. The date is August 20th at the Ridges Golf Course in WI Rapids WI. There is a registration form in this newsletter. I hope you all consider attending this year. We want to expand the scholarships that can be awarded to the many needy students that apply for them. You do not have to be a golfer to attend. We will have many things for you to do, so come out for a good enjoyable summer outing. CARS of WI Members, Promoting Excellence Through Education Concerned Auto Recyclers of Wisconsin News 8 June/July 2016 Association News SWOT: Strength, Weakness, Opportunities & Threats By Mike Kunkle Ron Sturgeon ends a monthly column that he writes with “Only you can make business great”. I have always believed that to be true but have had it demonstrated to me a number of times lately. We have just finished a round of our profit team peer group meetings and saw that most of the full service sites had sales growth year over year even though the scrap price was so reduced. We also met with a number of our self-serve customers and found that they also found a way to recover from the down commodity markets. It was very rewarding to see these folks have success when we hear a number of people talking about how difficult it is June/July 2016 9 to make money in today’s market. It also troubles me that so many of us are not taking steps to make your business great again. The lack of action plans by some is a sure map to a train wreck. Remember an idea will only carry so far without a map to show how we are going to get to the profit dollars we want to make. Have you taken an objective look at your business? Some people call this a SWOT analysis. That stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, and Opportunities & Threats. This will help you find the areas that you are strong and weak in and allow plans to be made on how to max or minimize them. It will also help show you the areas of your business that are at risk if you don’t make the changes needed to continue to grow profits. Concerned Auto Recyclers of Wisconsin News Association News Please remember that there is still a lot of money to be made in today’s marketplace. If you are not finding that to be true, please contact someone to help you get profitable. More millionaires will be made over the next 5 years than at any point in history. We want you to be one of them and if you already are, we want you to have more. “Remember, only you can make business great!” Mike Kunkle of Profit Team Consulting will be a speaker at the 2016 ATRI Convention and Trade Show in Springfield, IL, September 24 & 25, 2016. Mike Kunkel – Mike has 35 years’ experience in the automotive industry, starting at his family’s new auto parts store, machine shop and paint & body equipment business. Mike partnered with Bill Stevens to purchase Counts Consulting after a 20 year career as general manager of American Auto Salvage in FTW TX. Mike is also a past president and one of the founding fathers of TEAM PRP. He has also been a featured speaker at multiple state association meetings, URG, Car-Part, ARA and other industry events. Using a basic and proven platform, Mike looks at the entire operation. Mike is known as an expert at helping recyclers in the buying of product, inventorying it, processing it, selling it and getting it to the customer profitably. Since he is a mile from my house I delivered it to him. I stopped and we were shooting the breeze about business when I saw a burned out car behind his house. I asked why he was storing a tow-in behind his house and not in his impound lot. He grinned and said there was a story to go along with it. He said he parked the car behind the house and cut a hole in the back of it so his cats had a place to stay (Cat House). His wife thought the cats would get cold so they put a heat lamp in the car. The heat lamp shorted out and started the car on fire. If you think that was bad enough you should see the back of his house where the vinyl siding melted. He also said the fire chief had a laugh when he did the report. Welcome New Associate CARS Members Crest Environmental Products P.O. The product, HFO-1234yf, has a global warming potential (GWP) rating 1/335th that of R-134a, the current product used in vehicle air conditioning systems. While the new refrigerant will not impact ARA member businesses in the immediate future, its initial cost is much higher than that of R-134a, an estimated ten times more expensive, making the recovery of HFO-1234yf an opportunity for professional automotive recycling facilities. ARA’s Technical Advisory Committee has been discussing the new refrigerant and monitoring broader industry discussion about its impact on the automotive sector. For automakers, despite its higher cost, transitioning to the new refrigerant is not expected to require significant modifications in assembly lines or in vehicle system designs. Repairers will need to purchase additional equipment to handle the new refrigerant due to its mild flammability - a subject of much study and debate in Europe of the past few years. SAE has determined the product could not be ignited under conditions normally experienced by a motor vehicle, however some German automakers have labeled the product as unsafe. General Motors has indicated the company plans to transition all new model years to the HFO-1234yf by 2018, as has Chrysler. The ARA University continues to expand its curriculum to meet the educational demands of the members and now offers a course for ARA members and employees on MVAC Certification. For more information about the new refrigerant and courses available to ARA members, please contact ARA staff.
