Galleries displaying artists’ work, artists meeting collectors or different kinds of successful cooperation. Especially our exclusive contest service is frequently used by you. This is thrilling for us. Our network easily overcomes vast geographical distances - whether a European member is chosen for the Sculpture by the Sea Show in Aarhus, Denmark by an Australian jury or a gallery in Germany invites an artist from China whom they met through our network. These encounters are of a very friendly nature which can be referred to the connection – I call it bond – through our common interest. I was able to observe this myself over the past weeks. For example when I met a member in Brussels to view his collection. We never met before, but my wife and I were welcomed as old friends along with other appropriate guests. A very valuable exchange of ideas for sculpture network ensued. We were able to experience his true passion when he guided us through the huge yard containing his collection. A completely different example: A sculptor asked us for help because she needed money for printing an exhibition catalogue. At the moment sculpture network is not able to help in these cases; our financial range is too limited. But after a couple of phone calls with willing members we were able to find a solution. This was a splendid sign of solidarity among artists and friends of sculpture. On 25 April 2009 we invited you to a very special event near Madrid: a visit to the private collection of Placido Arango. Beatriz Blanch, our new board member who lives in Madrid, was able to secure an invitation from this distinguished collector. I went to Madrid along with 21 other participants. After a long drive we arrived at a huge manor, which Placido had transformed from a former cattle farm to a jewel of landscape architecture and home to a very exciting sculpture and art collection. Aperitif with collector Placido Arango (middle) I was not the distant-most visitor. Our new member, Hannah Peschar, http://www.hannahpescharsculpture.com/ and her assistant joined us from Great Britain. The group of as yet unfamiliar artists and friends of sculpture moved somewhat timidly aroand the masterly-placed art within this outskirts area. By the time of the aperitif, which took place in a large hall – starring a Chillida sculpture in the centre – we had grown into a group of familiar friends being welcomed by the landlord and joining in a discussion about what we had just experienced. 2 Newsletter 05-2009 Why am I going into so much detail, you ask? I want to make the point of how special our community can be. Every one of you has it in his own hands to be creative and get in touch with other members. You would be surprised at what can be achieved; certainly there are great chances for you and your work. Yours sincerely, Ralf Kirberg, ralf.kirberg@sculpture-network.org B Events and News VIII. We will report on three member institutions whose exhibitions also include artwork by some of our own members. Österreichischer Skulpturenpark in Unterpremstätten bei Graz (A) Austrian sculpture park in Unterpremstätten near Graz (A) On 26th of April season was started hosting a big party. The seven hectares of the park were designed by the famous Swiss landscape architect Dieter Kienast (1945 – 1998). There are over 60 sculptures from Austrian and international artists. Starting with classic modern art made of stone, wood and iron you will also find sculptures made from concrete, glass, plastic and fibreglass. Last year there was the opportunity to reconstruct the sculpture “Unità Cellulare” by Guiseppe Uncini (1929 – 2008). This sculpture had already been displayed in Graz by the artist when he participated in the international Drei-Länder-Biennale “trigon 67” “Ambiente”. The sculpture “Sphäre 315”, 2005, by Hartmut Skerbisch was the highlight of this year’s opening celebrations. It is borne by the correlation between the inside and outside showing volume as well as casing and transparency. The opening celebrations were held in remembrance of Hartmut Skerbisch, who very much anticipated the showing of his Sphere. Herbert Kerbisch was born in 1945 and passed away on the 3rd of April 2009. Landesmuseum Joanneum – Austrian Sculpture Park Adress: Thalerhofstr. 85, A – 8141 Unterpremstätten Opening hours: 1 April – 31. May: daily 10-18 / 1. June – 31. August: daily 10-20 / 1. September – 31. October: daily 10-18 Further information: http://www.museum-joanneum.at/ Swiss Triennial of sculpture “Bad RagARTz” 2009 (CH) On the weekend of the 16th and 17th of May the Fourth Swiss Triennial of Sculpture will return to the Bündner and St. Galler Rhein dale. Then the cultural summer “Bad RagARTz” will be opened in Bad Ragaz 20 km from Vaduz. 79 sculptors from aroand the world – including 18 members of sculpture network – will display their work. There will be sculptures on display in Bad Ragaz and the town centre of Vaduz. The nearby town of Bad Pfäfers in the Tamina canyon will be displaying small sculptures. This year’s motto of the triennial is “Kunst-Stücke” and is supposed to socially upgrade living space. Therefore art is entering as a reliable distraction from daily routine in Bad Ragaz and Vaduz. The initiators, Esther and Rolf Hohmeister, actually succeeded in collecting a budget sum of 1.5 million Swiss francs. 4 Newsletter 05-2009 The following members of sculpture network are participating in the Swiss Triennial of sculpture Bad RagARTz 2009: Magdalena Abakanowicz, Carlo Borer, Doris Bühler, Josef Lang, Felicitas Lensing-Hebben, Roland Mayer, Eva Moosbrugger, Keld Mosehelm, Jörg Plickat, Thomas Röthel, Renate Schalcher, Pavel Schmidt, Beate Schroedl, Suter & Bult, Urs Twellmann, Hubertus von der Goltz. Renata Schalcher (CH) „Kristallin“, 2008, im Kurpark Further information: http://www.badragartz.ch/ Fresh Air 09 – The 9th Quenington Sculpture Exhibition (GB) Since 1992 the collectors, Lucy and David Abel Smith, organise the “Fresh Air” sculpturebiennale – for this reason they foanded the non-profit organisation, “The Quenington Sculpture Trust” in 1997. On the outskirts of the historic town of Quenington in the district of Cotswolds, next to the river Coln there lies their idyllic park surroanded by a very old tree population. 90 artists will be displaying their work in the 5acre garden from 14. June to 5. July. The materials used range from bronze, glass, stone, ceramic, fabric, and plastic to multi media installations. Rebecca Newnham „White Lotus“, Fiberglas (Foto: The Quenington Sculpture Trust) There will be an interdisciplinary workshop for the first time at the 9th .edition of “Fresh Air” – 10 young artists have been invited to create and display installations. The workshop is a result of the cooperation of the music department at York University, represented by Roger Marsh, and the London University of the Arts which is headed by Stephen Williams. The Quenington Sculpture Trust, Old Rectory, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL7 5BN Further information: http://www.freshair2009.com/ „Aus dem Stamm – Holzskulptur heute“ in Ettlingen (D) 44 nationally and internationally renowned artists will present their work focussing mainly on wood material in two successive exhibitions. The exhibit emphasises the theory that wood is still a very important material for the art of sculpture. Aside from the virtual media, there seems to be a new interest in the use of sensual materials today. This exhibition was curated by Werner Pokorny, who focussed on the perspective and the access that an artist has to the 5 Newsletter 05-2009 materials used. Several other members of sculpture network are participating: Christoph Loos, Werner Mally, Klaus Prior and Matthäus Thoma. A very valuable catalogue has been published for this event: “Aus dem Stamm” – Die Sinnlichkeit des Materials – Holzskulptur Including articles of Dieter Brunner, Kay Heymer and Andreas Kühne. Documentation of the artwork of all 44 artists along with pictures, statements and biographical details; Singen 2009, 208 p., many pictures in colour; Heidelberg (Edition Braus) 2009, ISBN 978-3-89446-288-2, Preis: 39,90 € Part I: 25.04. – 24.05.; Teil II: 30.05. – 28.06.2009 / Opening: Friday the 24th of April and Friday the 29th of May starting 8 PM respectively – the whole exhibition will be shown at the museum in Singen 19.7. – 20.9.2009. Further information: http://www.kunstverein-ettlingen.de/ “Julio González” in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid (E) The Spaniard, Julio González (1876-1942,) is known to be the “father” of iron sculptures and can be counted as one of the most important sculptors in the 20th century, along with Alberto Giacometti and Constantin Brâncusi. With the creation of his sculpture, “Drawing in Space”, he is considered to be the inventor of iron sculptures. "Hombre Cactus I” , 1939. Hierro forjado y soldado. IVAM, Institut Valencià d`Art Modern, Almost 70 years after his passing, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid is devoting an extensive retrospective for the first time in his home country. Starting 1st of June there will be over 200 pieces of his artwork on display from all of his creative periods. One part of the exhibition focuses on his collaboration with Pablo Picasso between 1928 and 1932. Gonzalez became a painter after his goldsmith apprenticeship. At the age of 42 he learned welding in an auto factory, giving his career a completely new perspective and leading to his nickname of the first “artist with welding equipment”. Further information: http://www.museoreinasofia.es/index.html “Lothar Baumgarten – Seven Soands/ Seven Circles” at KUB Bregenz (A) The four time Documenta participant, Lothar Baumgarten (born 1944), along with other famous artists such as Joseph Beuys, Walter de Maria and Robert Smithson, essentially broadened the boandaries of art with respect to the confrontation with nature and the reflexion thereupon. In Bregenz in the exciting masterpiece of meditative architecture by the Swiss architect, Peter Zumthor, just awarded the lucrative Pritzker Price, the artist designed a radically new opus. Lothar Baumgarten crafted seven phonic sculptures for the three floors at the KUB. He started with several soand records, which he collected 6 Newsletter 05-2009 over four years on the peninsula Denning’s Point, north of New York. These are audio files of urban character, which are effected by climate, soands of animals and plants, and movement of men and machines. Those audio files – “Phonic Pictures” (60 min each) - have a symphonic dimension. Backed by special surroand-soand-technique the listener gets the feeling of actually being projected to that place encountering this dramatic and daunting orchestration of nature. Lothar Baumgarten is known to be sparing when it comes to catalogues for his exhibitions. For this one he and the Dutchman Walter Nikkels published a textbook that gives close insights into his artwork: Lothar Baumgarten – Seven Soands / Seven Circles Textbook published by Kunsthaus Bregenz and Kaira Cabanas, articles from T. Bartscherer, C. Buckley, J. Curley, C. Rattemeyer and A. Rosenblum Martin, D/ENG.; 144 pages, 22,5 x 30,5 cm, 48 pictures, Price: 48€ The exhibition is open until 21 June 2009. Kunsthaus Bregenz, Karl Tizian Platz, A-6900 Bregenz. Further information: http://www.kunsthaus-bregenz.at Mark Dion. Über die Jagd / Concerning Hunting in Neumünster (D) High seats, hunting lodges, targets, pictures, emblems, and costumes – a scenery like in a nature history or historic museum. However in the exhibition of the American artist Mark Dion (* 1961 in New Bedford, lives in New York and Pennsylvania) these are artistic objects, which are part of an overlapping installation throughout the park at the Herbert-Gerisch-Stiftung in Neumünster. The artwork of this fascinating artist looks into every aspect of the nature theme. His work is pointed towards the fascinating facets of “Nature”. With this exhibition Dion is taking the part of a hunter and people fascinated by this theme. His exhibition also shows sculptural interpretations of high seats, a collection of real hunting scenes and a strangely crafted hunting banner. Using a subversively ironic approach he achieves a conversion of the benefactors` private hunting lodge to an artistic installation. Mark Dion uses his work in order to avoid any categorization. We can see a reflection of hunting as a form of cultural bond with nature. This exhibition is an international cooperation of the GerischStiftung with Kunstraum Dornbirn, Aarhus Kunstbygning, Galleria Civica Di Modena and Kunsthalle Krems. 7 Newsletter 05-2009 A catalogue has been published: “Mark Dion – Concering Hunting”; Dieter Buchhart, Verena Gamper, Text by Dieter Burchhart, Verena Gamper, Martin Henatsch, Angela Vettese and Jacob Wamberg, Dt/En, 2008 164 pages, 101 pics, 20€ Exhibition: 17 May till 11 October 2009 Herbert-Gerisch-Stiftung, Hauptstrasse 1, 24536 Neumünster Further information: http://www.gerisch-stiftung.de “Guiseppe Uncini” at the Neue Galerie Graz (A) The Neue Galerie Graz is showing Guiseppe Uncini (1929 – 2008) one of the most innovative Italian artists in the second half of the 20th century. This exhibition is an homage to the life achievement of Uncini and has been planned with the artist – it is a cooperation between the ZKM Karlsruhe and Mart Rovereto. Uncini`s work is outstanding and revolutionary in several aspects: The artist started off in the 1950`s with the tradition of then up-to-date dominating informal painting of material pictures. Even then he was already using iron and cement for his work and influenced artists of the Arte Povera and Minimal Art. Mark Giuseppe Uncini: "Unità Cellulare“ 1967/2008, Foto: Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz Uncini was the first sculptor to tackle the sculptural problem of shadow, which caused Peter Weibel to call him the “Sculptor of negative space”. Shadow becomes a sign of space which exists and does not exist. He can only materialise the space in that he makes it visible. Uncini noticed that a sculpture not only occupies space but also creates it anew between the artwork and its surroandings which also become part of the sculpture. This gap is also sculpturally materialised. He creates a sculpture which consists of positive and negative volume, spaces and interspaces; it is material and immaterial simultaneously. Uncini took part in the 1967 Biennale trigon 67 in Graz, where he installed an iron sculpture ander the working title “Unità Cellulare”. This sculpture shows the outlines and contours of a furnished interior and its shadow effect. Designed by one nearly continuous line, that which represents reality appears as orange-sprayed steel pipes, the appropriate shadows appear as flat-hammered metal rods. The preserved preparatory drawings and drafts at the Neue Galerie made it possible to create the only reconstruction authorised by Uncini. 8 Newsletter 05-2009 There is a catalogue “Guiseppe Uncini. Scultore/ Bildhauer 1929-2008” available. Text by Peter Weibel, Bruno Corà and Margherita de Pilati. Text in German and Italian, 144 pages, ISBN: 88-613-0815-2 Duration: 25 April to 07 June 2009 Neue Galerie, Sackstrasse 16, A – 8010 Graz Further information: http://www.museum-joanneum.at Four portrait heads for the Munich “Ruhmeshalle” (D) Our members Matthias Gangkofner and Max Wagner who live at the Lake Starnberg near Munich just received prestigious jobs. They where asked to craft busts of famous persons: Max Wagner decided to make one of Bertold Brecht and Karl Orff; Matthias Gangkofner chose Franz von Lenbach and Emmy Noether. These busts have now been unveiled in a ceremonial act at the Ruhmeshalle. The Ruhmeshalle is located on top of the Theresienwiese in Munich using the plans of Hofbaumeister Leo von Klenze between 1843 to 1853. Kind Ludwig I. set the task in order to honour important Bavarian personalities which rendered outstanding services to the state. The busts will be located in the three winged peristyle. The Bavarian minister of finances, Georg Fahrenschon in unveiling the portrait of Brecht, made by Max Wagner/ photo: BR The Hall of Fame and the 18,5 m high „Bavaria“ create an architectonic entity Barbara Szüts (A) wins sculpture competition in Friedberg (D) The Austrian-born sculptor, Barbara Szüts, living in Cologne just won the sculpture competition in Friedberg/ Augsburg: Her delicate stainless steel from the series “Überlagerungen” will be located on the Friedberg forecourt of the central train station. Proposal by Barbara Szüts It wasn’t so easy from her point of view to form a design for the sloped forecourt. However she sees it as positive that there is so much sky visible. In the future the 4 meter high sculpture is supposed to be a checkpoint within the roandabout. 9 Newsletter 05-2009 “So weit das Budget reicht” – a daring construction in Arbon (CH) The art students Matthias Bildstein (Vienna) and Philippe Glatz (Zurich) who are known as the artist duo “Bildstein | Glatz” are very brave. In Arbon at the lake Boden they built a daring construction which projected nine meters into the lake – as far as the budget lasts. From far away it just looks like a train bridge being build. Close up you will discover a delicate construction. With their installations and actions in public space Bildstein | Glatz show that reality is a chosen option not a given thing. Often an allusion to the existing appears so reasonable and obvious that even the idea of a new creation seems unthinkable. Opposing this factual force they designed utopias and social visions which expose the legitimacy, authority, tradition and convention behind it all. Thus they free physical and spiritual space for the construction of architectural fantasies and social alternatives. “Sculpture by the Sea” comes to Aarhus (DK) In 1997 Australian born David Handley foanded the “Sculpture by the Sea” as a one-day-sculptureopen air exhibition at Bondi Beach near Sydney. Meanwhile it transformed into a gigantic and very spectacular sculpture exhibition project that attracts more than 500.000 visitors a year. For the first time this year he risked the move from Sydney to Europe and is organising a sculptural exhibition project at the Danish coast within the framework of the centennial of the National Exhibition in Aarhus in 1909. The initiative lies with Their Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederic and Crown Princess Mary, born in Australia, who were fascinated by “Sculpture by the Sea” at Bondi Beach Sydney. Upon this unique event between Denmark and Australia there will be shown more than 60 sculptures mainly by artists from both countries. Our member Pomona Zipser from Berlin has been invited, too. Our Madrid board member, Beatriz Blanch, will represent sculpture network at the opening weekend in Aarhus. Opening: 05 June 2009. Duration: 05 June – 28 June 2009 Further information: http://www.sculpturebythesea.com/ and http://www.sculpturebythesea.dk 10 Newsletter 05-2009 Alex Corno (I) at “Arts on the Street” in Colorado Springs (USA) With his sculpture “AIRRING” our Italian member Alex Corno from Milan will take part for the first time at an exhibition in the USA. The 218x193x123 cm tall sculpture will be assembled at “Art on the Streets” in Colorado Springs. 42 artists where invited but only 23 were chosen to take part in this exhibition. Alex is the only foreigner which makes him very proud. The 11. edition of “Arts on the Streets” will be opened on 26. June and will be open until May 2010. On the occasion of a comprehensive exhibit she has now published a catalogue documenting her projects of the last 15 years. Nele Ströbel works with the most diverse variety of materials and techniques and is not afraid to use modern methods. Constructions which are the unification of many different small parts are on show. Multimedia-based she demonstrates through hand drawings, digital prints, objects made with different materials and films our communication and scope of knowledge. Her central theme, the paradigm change between private and public space, she puts up for discussion through real and virtual objects. She accumulates fundamental questions reflecting our earthly existence and dreams but never loses her humour.
