King Arthur’s Grave by Stephanie Benson
The legend of King Arthur is an enduring one, retold in its various forms for hundreds of years, though even ancient historians considered it nothing more than a myth. But in the twelfth
century, evidence surfaced suggesting that Arthur might have
been more than a mere legend.
In the year 1190, the monks of Glastonbury Abbey in England
announced an incredible discovery. Shortly before his death,
King Henry II (AD 1133-1189) had informed them of a long-kept
secret of the royal family: King Arthur’s remains were buried in
the churchyard of St. Dunstan in Glastonbury. A search was soon commissioned.

Upon excavating the indicated area, the searchers
unearthed a massive oak trunk, buried sixteen feet deep,
just as Henry had described. Inside was a human skeleton.
It was absolutely gigantic. It appeared to be much taller than
an average man, and the space between the eye sockets was
as wide as the palm of a man’s hand. Apparently, the famous king was truly larger than life. The skeleton was not
alone in its coffin. Alongside it was a second, lying next to
a plait of blonde hair. The identities of the two remains
were described on an archaic lead cross which was found
nearby – a Latin inscription named the occupants of the coffin as the renowned King Arthur and his queen, Guinevere.
The discovery was very timely. In 1184, the monastic
building and church of Glastonbury had been burnt to the
ground in a fire, leaving the monks in serious financial
trouble. However, if an abbey were in possession of a sacred relic, people would visit from far and wide to see pieces
of the cross, clothes and objects of the saints… and bones.
King Arthur was not a religious figure, but as one of the
foremost heroes in legendary history, his remains could
attract a great number of medieval tourists. Indeed, people
started flocking to Glastonbury from the surrounding
regions, and few questioned the authenticity of the find.
The Abbey soon became wealthy from the offerings given
by those who made the pilgrimage.
The medieval historian, Gerald of Wales described the
discovery of King Arthur’s grave. Beside his report written
in about 1193, there were several other versions of the discovery of the grave, each a bit different from the others, and
this inconsistency in the details of the story strongly suggests
that the grave of King Arthur might have been an elaborate
hoax, designed to generate pilgrim traffic to the abbey.
Unfortunately the bones went missing centuries ago,
so the evidence cannot be examined using modern techniques. They probably didn’t survive the dissolution of
the abbey by Henry VIII during the English Reformation
in 1539. The burial cross did, though. It was last reported
in the possession of an official of Wells Cathedral, sometime in the early eighteenth century.

Holmes had not yet returned. The landlady informed me

received as much information as I could desire about Miss
Adler. She lives quietly, sings at concerts, drives out at five
every day, and returns at seven sharp for dinner. Seldom
goes out at other times, except when she sings. Has only one
male visitor, but a good deal of him. He is dark, handsome,
and dashing, never calls less than once a day, and often
twice. He is a Mr. Godfrey Norton, and he is a lawyer.”
“That sounded intriguing. What was the relation
between them, and what was the object of his repeated visits? Was she his client, his friend, or his mistress? I was still
balancing the matter in my mind when a cab drove up to the
villa, and a gentleman sprang out. He was a handsome man
– must have been the man I was told about. He appeared to
be in a great hurry. He was in the house about half an hour,
and I could see him in the windows of the sitting-room,
pacing up and down, talking excitedly, and waving his arms.
Of her I could see nothing. Then he emerged, looking even
more hurried than before. He stepped up to the cab “Drive
like the devil,” he shouted “to the Church of St. Monica.”
Away they went, and I was just wondering whether
I should follow them when up the lane came another cab.
It hadn’t pulled up before she shot out of the hall door and
into it. She was a lovely woman, with a face that a man might
die for. ” ’The Church of St. Monica, John,” she cried. I was
just going to run for it, when a third cab came through the
street. I got on and said “The Church of St. Monica.”
I don’t think I’d ever driven faster. When I dashed into
the church, there was not a soul there save the two whom
I had followed and a clergyman. They were all in front of the
altar. Godfrey Norton came running towards me. “Thank
God!’ he cried. I was half-dragged up to the altar, and befo-
re I knew where I was, I found myself assisting in the wedding ceremony between Irene Adler and Godfrey Norton.
It was all done in an instant, and there was the gentleman
thanking me on the one side and the lady on the other.”

Zadanie 1.
Willie Cooma is used to creating a stir when he makes
his way across the Australian Outback. He has taken this journey many times and knows the sight of his camel-drawn
wagon leading a group of 15 camels along a state highway
can stop traffic. He’s done about 45,000km by camel in the
past 15 years, going on the road for months at a time.
I’m joining Willie Cooma for a five-day camel safari that
covers 70km of spectacular Outback country. The first evening, while he’s making pancakes on a smouldering campfire, he watches his camels chewing the nearby bush. “Careful with Benny over there,” he says, “he’ll eat anything he
can get hold of.” Benny is one of four camels on our safari.
He’s eaten everything from unattended bags of rice, loaves
of bread and plastic bags to books, soap, and even a camera. Willie got him from a family who had raised him as a pet.
He was allowed inside their house so he thinks he’s human.
Willie must constantly keep an eye on him.
Known as “the Camel Man”, Willie knows a lot about the
animals. He tells us there is no such thing as a bad-tempered camel. It’s all in the way they’re treated. Of course, they
all have different personalities, but Willie’s camels are always mild-mannered. He’s trained them not to spit or bite.
He guides his four camels forward with a series of commands and we’re all amazed because two of the camels, both
called Benny, respond individually to his orders. They seem to know instinctively which Benny he is referring to.
Willie’s had a rich and colourful life. After training as
achef in Singapore, he spent 25 years working with top chefs
around the world. Then he decided he couldn’t stand over
a stove for the rest of his life, and returned to Australia, where he ended up on a camel farm. He spent long periods catching up to 150 wild camels at a time and training them for
work. Several of those camels are now working with him at
the safaris.
As we pull into a clearing to set up camp for another
night, Cooma releases the two Bennys, Bollard and Snow

and stirs beef fried rice with vegetables in a blackened pan on the
fire. This is what travel is all about – taking your time and enjoying the freedom. There is something very compelling about seeing the world unfold from the back of a quirky wagon travelling
at 5km/h. By the time we have finished our five-day safari, we will
all feel as though we’ve noticed every leaf, every inch of this vast,
spectacular landscape.

ONE ‘Martha’s Love’
Highly acclaimed by some critics and advertised as Ted Morton’s best picture, ‘Martha’s Love’ seriously let me down. The
plot is boring to say the least, and the characters one-dimensional. Christine McAdams as the main heroine looks stunning in
her costumes but her acting is less than adequate. Robert Stern
gives a brilliant performance as her cruel father but cannot make up for such a poor script.

There’s nothing in ‘Wonderful Memories’ that we haven’t seen before. Martin Elfman has packed his film with clichés and
borrowed ideas and still he manages to take romantic melodrama in new directions. The viewer can’t help but feel enchanted
by the tranquil atmosphere and breathtaking beauty of the
Welsh landscape. The young cast are spontaneous and pleasant to look at, even if not completely sure of themselves.

THREE ‘Jock the Gator’
Set on an exotic coral island, with characters funnier and more convincing than live actors, and – above all – with its absolutely marvellous story line, ‘Jock the Gator’ is my personal Oscar
candidate for animated feature film. The music could perhaps
be a little more original, but otherwise I can see no flaws in this
genuinely gripping and heart-warming story of adventure and
friendship.

FOUR ‘Dark Side II’
It’s extremely rare for a sequel to be better than the original, although the first film was so awful that it’s not really that much
of a surprise in this case. ‘Dark Side II’ uses the same tricks with
ghosts jumping out of the TV screen every few minutes, but it’s
undoubtedly more enjoyable, thanks to good acting and skilfully written script. It’s perfectly watchable but if you just get
a CD with the soundtrack, you’ll have the best of it.

FIVE ‘Another Body’
5.
‘Another Body’ is a combination of comedy and zombie horror
with witty dialogues and an excellent performance from Sig Norman. A weird blend of suspense, surrealism and bizarre dialogues – the film has as many enemies as admirers. I found it hilarious
and entertaining despite a few weaknesses of the script. The film
is well made and superbly acted, which makes it an absolute treat.

The first day of San Fermin festival in the Spanish town of
Pamplona hardly ever passes without somebody being hurt,
and last Monday was no exception. Eight people were taken to
hospital, two of them seriously injured. A 32-year-old woman
had received a deep horn wound on her leg, a 20-year-old man
suffered broken arm and ribs, and six others were treated for
minor cuts and bruises. Fortunately, no one was gored out of
the few hundreds who took part in the early morning run.
The annual San Fermin festival, or the Pamplona bull running, as it is more commonly known outside Spain, is the only one of its kind. At eight in the morning for eight summer
days in a row, large numbers of risk-lovers run in front of a pack
of wild bulls through the narrow, twisting streets of Pamplona. The festival draws tourists from around the world, most
wearing traditional all-white clothes with a red scarf around
the neck, ready to risk death on the horns of a bull in a crazy
four-minute run.
The festival has its origins in the Middle Ages. There is evidence from as far back as the 13th century of a two-day religious
event which then took place in October. The joining together of
religious, commercial and bullfighting festivals and moving it to
July led to the first official celebration in Pamplona in 1591. This
fiesta was a low-key affair in comparison to the modern day running of the bulls. Over the next few years, the festival lost some
of its primary religious focus, dancing and fireworks became dominant features, and the event was extended to over a week.
The bull running was made world famous by Ernest Hemingway. His novel ”The Sun Also Rises” includes an account of
his visit to the festival with a group of British and American
friends in the 1920s. The event has become so enormously popular that overcrowding is a serious problem nowadays.
Despite its huge popularity, the festival attracts a lot of criticism. Last Saturday, dozens of animal rights activists held
a protest in Pamplona by lying on the ground along the course
of the bull running.

vor. Neben meinem Haus stehen vier Abfalltonnen, also werfe ich den Hausmüll in die dafür bestimmte Tonne. Diese
Tätigkeit scheint mir nichts Besonderes zu sein, weil das
jeder Bürger tut. Ich spare Wasser, indem ich mir beim
zugedrehten Wasserhahn Zähne putze und nie länger als
sieben Minuten Dusche nehme. Dadurch verbraucht man
wesentlich weniger Wasser. Deswegen auch habe ich keine
Badewanne, die ist ein Wasserfresser. Und das wäre alles,
denke ich mir.
Monika (17): Ich bin ein typischer Umweltfeind, so sagen
meine Eltern. Ehrlich gesagt spielt die Umwelt keine Rolle in
meinem Leben. Ich kann sowieso nichts ändern, wozu also
sollte ich mich bemühen, ökologisch zu denken? Das nervt,
kostet Zeit und hat dazu noch keinen Sinn. Ich bin auch der
Meinung, dass viele Jugendliche nur vormachen, dass sie sich
um die Umwelt kümmern. Es ist zurzeit „in“. Und das nenne
ich Hypokrisie.
Leon (17): Ich habe einen Ökoclub an meinem Gymnasium
gegründet. Wir sind schon über 30 Mitglieder. Unsere
Schulleitung unterstützt uns und steht immer zur Verfügung,
wenn wir etwas vorhaben. Mit ihrer Hilfe organisiere ich als
Vorsitzender des Clubs verschiedene Veranstaltungen und
Treffen. Letztens haben uns die Greenpeace-Aktivisten besucht und eine Rede über das Ozonloch und den Treibhauseffekt gehalten. Sie haben mir sehr viele Flugblätter gegeben
und die habe ich dann in einer Fußgängerzone an alle Vorbeigehenden verteilt. Es ist sehr wichtig, die Menschen aufzuklären. Manche sind sich einfach dessen nicht bewusst, wie
sie zu dem Umweltschutz beitragen könnten. Meine Rolle
besteht darin, dass ich sie bewusst mache.
Dirk (20): Ich fahre hauptsächlich Rad und wenn es sein
muss, z.B. wegen des schlechten Wetters fahre ich mit der
U-Bahn oder mit der Straßenbahn.
Da die Abgase die Luft verschmutzen, sollten die Auto
fahrer wenigstens das bleifreie Benzin gebrauchen, wenn sie
schon das Auto fahren müssen und es natürlich in einem dafür
vorgesehenen Platz waschen. Auf keinen Fall im Garten oder
im Wald. Ich kann nicht verstehen, warum viele Menschen
so leichtsinnig handeln. Wir sind doch alle mitverantwortlich.
Ich kaufe auch nur Produkte, die mit dem grünen Punkt gekennzeichnet sind. Da habe ich die Gewissheit: die sind umweltfreundlich. Man sollte mehr Wert auf die Verpackung legen und nur die Ware in Mehrwegflaschen und Papiertüten
kaufen. Plastik und Blech zerfallen ja jahrelang. Aber darum
kümmern sich nicht zu viele Kunden.

Polen viel Wert auf den Karneval legt. Hier wird der wirklich
gefeiert.
Am populärsten ist der Kölner Karneval, während dessen der größte Karnevalsumzug in Deutschland stattfindet.
An dem so genannten Rosenmontagszug beteiligen sich
viele Musikkapellen, Reiter, festlich bedeckte Wagen und
Menschen in Kostümen. Der seit 1823 organisierte Umzug
wird immer von vielen Zuschauern begleitet. In letzter Zeit
beträgt die Zahl der Gäste über eine Million. Viele von ihnen
werden mit kleinen Geschenken und Süßigkeiten beworfen.
Der Rosenmontagszug startet am Chodwigplatz, geht an dem
weltbekannten Kölner Dom vorbei und endet in der Mohrenstraße.
Erlebenswert ist auch die Weiberfastnacht, eine Feier, die am
Donnerstag vor dem Aschenmittwoch meist um 11:11 beginnt.
An diesem Tag wird ab Mittag nicht gearbeitet, sondern in den
Kneipen und auf den Straßen gefeiert. Charakteristisch für
diese Feier ist auch der Brauch, dass die Frauen den Männern
ihre Krawatten abschneiden. Damit verlieren die Männer ihre
Macht. Damit es aber mehr einem Spiel ähnlich ist, bekommen
die Herren einen Kuss als Entschädigung.

Sara: Einen schönen guten Tag an alle, die mich jetzt hören.
Tja. Ich soll euch heute erzählen, wie es mir so geht, mit meiner Behinderung und so. Also, ganz gut, zurzeit ebenfalls.

drei Jahren wird er aus dem Gefängnis rauskommen und normal leben, frei sein. Ich werde bis zum Ende meines Lebens im
Rollstuhl bleiben. Aber ich bin hier nicht gekommen, um mich
zu beschweren. Ich habe doch mein Leben voll im Griff. Ich
male stundenlang. Jetzt habe ich viel Zeit dafür. Ich plaudere
mit meinen Chatfreunden aus aller Welt, lese Bücher. Alles,
was auf den Markt kommt.
Red: Es klingt, als ob du hauptsächlich, …….4.3……………...
Stimmt es?
Sara: Ich verbringe die meiste Zeit zu Hause, weil die
Wetterbedingungen nicht immer für einen Rollstuhlfahrer
geeignet sind. Aber Sie können mir glauben. Sobald es trocken
ist, bleibe ich an der frischen Luft. Meine Familie hat ein
Sommerhaus an einem ruhigen, klaren See. Mein Lieblingsplatz,
sage ich Ihnen. Ruhe, Natur, saubere Luft. Hier kann man richtig abschalten und neue Kräfte gewinnen. In meiner Kindheit

gerade vorbeigehen. Zum Glück sind die meisten eher hilfsbereit und behandeln mich mit Respekt. Nur einmal habe ich
einen über mich reden hören. Der plauderte hinter meinem
Rücken. Das arme Ding, nannte er mich, die tut mir Leid, was
kann sie schon leisten? Also, wenn ich auf solche abfällige
Bemerkungen stoße, dann ………………4.6…………………...Ich
habe ja nicht aufgegeben, mache mein Bestes. Allen, die uns,
die Behinderten, bemitleiden, werde ich noch einiges beweisen.

vor jeder Klassenarbeit in Geschichte und habe endlich verstanden, worum es in der englischen Grammatik geht. Im vorigen Schuljahr hat meine ältere Schwester versucht mir zu
helfen. Das war eine totale Pleite, wir haben uns nur gestritten,
weil sie mich immer wieder Dummkopf genannt hat. Sie war
eine schreckliche Nachhilfelehrerin, ungeduldig, eingebildet
und zerstreut. Mein aktueller Nachhilfelehrer ist nicht nur
kompetent, sondern auch nett. Der Unterricht mit ihm macht
mir wirklich Spaß.
Peter
Mich besucht donnerstags eine Germanistikstudentin. Ich
mag die Nachhilfe mit ihr, denn sie schreit nicht, gibt sich Mühe
mit mir, schafft eine lockere Atmosphäre und lässt mich aussprechen. Wir diskutieren viel über verschiedene Aspekte der
deutschen Literatur und sie scheint sich wirklich dafür zu
interessieren, was ich zu sagen habe. Dieser Spaß hat seinen
Preis, aber einer ausgebildeten Gymnasiallehrerein müsste ich
dreimal so viel zahlen.

Ich mag keinen Einzelunterricht. Ich fühle mich gestresst, beobachtet. Deswegen habe ich auf die Nachhilfe in Französisch
mit einem Muttersprachler verzichtet. Jetzt besuche ich einen
Sprachkurs und habe Unterricht in einer Gruppe. Die Stimmung
ist viel besser. Bei individuellen Problemen kann ich mich immer während der Pause an den Lehrer wenden oder nach dem
Unterricht ein paar Minuten länger bleiben.
Zadanie 2.
Kurz vor Weihnachten ist meine Familie in eine neue Wohnung gezogen. Bei dem Umzug hat uns die Transportfirma
meines Onkels geholfen. Zum Glück wurde nichts beschädigt
und es ist auch nichts verloren gegangen. Der Umzug ging schnell,
obwohl die Wetterbedingungen schlecht waren. Es war sehr glatt
und die Möbelträger mussten wirklich aufpassen, um nicht
auszurutschen. Wir mussten die alte Wohnung verlassen, weil sie
zu klein für uns geworden war. Ich habe nämlich einen Bruder
bekommen und dann war zu wenig Platz für uns alle. Jetzt leben
wir in einem Neubau, im Erdgeschoss, wir haben eine Terrasse
und ich habe endlich mein eigenes Zimmer. Davon habe ich so
lange geträumt. Aus meinem Zimmer habe ich einen schönen
Blick auf einen in der Nähe gelegenen Park. Die Wohnsiedlung,
in der wir wohnen, hat einen privaten Spielplatz und ein Fitnesszentrum. Jeder Wohnungsbesitzer verfügt über einen Parkplatz
in der Tiefgarage, also muss sich mein Vater keine Sorgen mehr
um unseren Wagen machen. Der ist da jetzt sicher. Die einzige
Sache, über die ich mich beschweren kann, ist das Alter der Nachbarn. Entweder sind das junge Ehepaare mit kleinen Kindern
oder ältere Leute Mitte fünfzig. Ich bin noch keinem Gleichaltrigen begegnet. Schade!!!
Meine Mutter vermisst ihr altes Schlafzimmer, aber meinem
Vater mangelt es an nichts. Er sagt, er ist mit der neuen Wohnung
so zufrieden, dass er sich wieder jung und energievoll fühlt. Er
scheint sogar zu vergessen, dass er jetzt jahrelang einen Kredit
zurückzahlen muss.

Tina
Ich besuche ein öffentliches Gymnasium in meiner Kleinstadt. Um ehrlich zu sein, muss ich zugeben, dass das Niveau
des Unterrichts nicht immer besonders hoch ist. Da ich davon
träume, Ärztin zu werden, muss ich sehr gut Chemie und Biologie beherrschen. Mit Bio habe ich Probleme. Der Lehrer fehlt
oft und wenn er da ist, versucht er ganz schnell den Stoff nachzuholen. Für mich macht er das zu schnell. Dann wende ich
mich an meine Nachbarin, die sich in Biologie gut auskennt,
und sie erklärt mir alle Problemstellen. So sieht mein Nachhilfeunterricht aus. Um mich bei ihr zu bedanken, mähe ich ihr
den Rasen oder führe ihre Hunde aus. Zum Glück verlangt sie
von mir kein Geld, denn das könnten sich meine Eltern leider
nicht leisten.

Monika
Nachhilfe wäre mir zu teuer. Für manche Schüler ist es ein
Muss, aber glücklicherweise schaffe ich den ganzen Schulkram ohne fremde Hilfe. Ja, ich kann sogar sagen, dass ich den
anderen oft helfe, wenn sie Probleme mit Mathe haben.
Ich bin ziemlich begabt, wenn es um exakte Fächer geht. Ich
lasse meine Klassenkameraden nie abschreiben, das finde ich
unfair, aber sie können mich immer um Hilfe bitten, sobald
sie merken, dass sie etwas nicht verstehen. Sie sind der
Meinung, ich kann gut erklären. Ich bin also eine kostenlose
Nachhilfelehrerin für die Schüler aus meiner Klasse. Und die
meisten wissen das zu schätzen. Sonst müssten ihre Eltern
tief in die Tasche greifen.
Eva
Ich bin schon mal sitzen geblieben. Diese Situation darf sich
nicht wiederholen, deshalb bekomme ich Nachhilfe in Englisch
und Geschichte. Allein bin ich nicht in der Lage, mir den Stoff
anzueignen. Mein Nachhilfelehrer ist ein ausgebildeter Pädagoge, der zwar teuer, aber sehr gut ist. Dank seiner Hilfe sind
meine Noten jetzt besser geworden. Ich schwitze nicht mehr
