The act’s “I Gotta Feeling,” No. 1 on CHR/Top 40 for a second week, jumps 4-1 on the All-Format Airplay chart. Previous single “Boom Boom Pow” spent six weeks at the All-Format summit. Three Canadian acts enter the Rock chart’s top 40. Thornley leaps 46-32 with “Changes,” the second release from its sophomore album, “Tiny Pictures.” “Believe” reached No. 5 in April. On the latter chart, the former Sky member’s “Carrera” jumps 21-17. Taylor Swift collects her second Country No. 1 from “Fearless,” and the fourth of her career, as “You Belong With Me” charges 3-1. On Hot AC, the song bounds 36-26. “Love Story” topped Country for two weeks in November. Sean Kingston scores his first top 10 at Hot AC, as “Fire Burning” vaults 17-9. He registered his previous best peak at the format as a lead artist with 2007’s “Beautiful Girls” (No. 18). —Paul Tuch KARL WOLF 31 country, 26 AC and 25 hot AC stations are electronically monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by Nielsen BDS. ©2009, Nielsen Business Media, Inc. BILLBOARD.BIZ BULLETIN PAGE 8 OF 8 [NOTES] Tracks On Wax By Robert Thompson, Billboard Canadian Correspondent robertthompson8@sympatico.ca In their own words, Wax Records co-founders Ron Morse and Jamie Appleby are not “cool kids.” But as the former GM and senior marketing director of Wind-up Records Canada, Morse and Appleby are hoping some of their former success with commercial rock acts like Creed and Evanescence rubs off on their new venture. Wind-up’s catalog also includes Canadian act Finger Eleven, whose “Them vs. You vs. Me” was rock album of the year at the 2008 Juno Awards. When the U.S. label recently decided to wind down its Canadian operations, Appleby and Morse opted to set out on their own. “The timing worked out for both parties,” Morse says. “We looked at our success in Canada with Wind-up and thought there was no reasonable reason why we couldn’t duplicate it.” Morse says they expect to have finalized signing four to five acts within the next few weeks, along with a distribution deal with Warner Music Canada. Morse will run day-to-day operations while Appleby handles A&R. Appleby says signings will veer toward rock radio JUL 24 2009 standbys—and that musical choice isn’t the only thing linking the label to Wind-up. Wax will also work Wind-up’s marketing and promotions in Canada for the foreseeable future. “There was upside for everyone,” Appleby says. “There was continuity; it worked for all involved.” Before joining Wind-up Canada when it launched in 2004, 25-year music industry veteran Morse was a marketing exec at Sony Music Canada, having been at Warner before that. Appleby is also ex-Sony. “We’re not those cool kids,” Morse jokes. “We’re major-label guys.” • While former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page has been hitting Canada’s folk festival circuit, his old band has started recording its first album without him. But Page isn’t the only one not working with BNL this time around—the group recently parted ways with manager Terry McBride and signed with startup Cam 8 (billboard.biz, July 10). Nettwerk Music Group CEO McBride had worked with the group since the mid-’90s. “BNL, for management, have moved on,” he says. But, he adds, CANADIAN BOXSCORE “we are still doing a number of things with them.” Since 2005, the band’s recordings have appeared on its own Desperation label, operating under the Nettwerk Music Group umbrella. • Terry McBride is, however, still managing Sarah McLachlan. Rumors continue to swirl about McLachlan’s Lilith Fair festival re-emerging next summer after a decade in limbo. McBride says to expect an announcement in September. That’s when McLachlan plays a one-day (Sept. 12) soldout benefit show, Sessions at Ambleside, with Sheryl Crow and Neil Young. Proceeds go to the Sarah McLachlan Foundation, set up to “bring music into the lives of young Canadians” through free music programs to underserved communities. ® ARTISTS Gross Surfacing: McLachlan’s Lilith Fair to return?
