August Housing Starts
Rise 1.7 Percent in July
Nationwide housing starts inched
up 1.7 percent to a seasonally
adjusted annual rate of 546,000
units in July from a downwardly
revised figure in the previous
month, according to U.S. Commerce
Department figures released today. DOUG McCULLOCH
President
The gain occurred entirely on the
multifamily side, with single-family housing production falling
4.2 percent to 432,000 units.
“Builders are very reluctant to build more homes in view of
the current state of the economy and weak buyer demand,”
noted Bob Jones, chairman of the National Association of
Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder from Bloomfield
Hills, Michigan.
“Right now the housing market
is essentially in a holding pattern,”
acknowledged NAHB Chief Economist
David Crowe. “As our latest member
surveys have indicated, builders
are seeing greater hesitancy among
potential home buyers who are
uncertain about what’s in store for the
economy and jobs going forward. That said, favorable home
buying conditions including historically low mortgage rates
and low house prices should help spur additional demand as
the job market gradually improves later this year.”
The entire 1.7 percent gain in housing production this July
was due to a 32.6 percent jump on the more volatile multifamily
side, which brought that sector back closer to trend at a
114,000-unit rate following a major dip in the previous month.
Meanwhile, single-family housing production declined 4.2
percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 432,000 units,
its lowest mark since May of 2009.
Two regions registered improved starts activity in July, with
the Northeast and Midwest each posting double-digit gains, of
30.5 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively. The South, which
is the country’s largest housing market, posted a 6.3 percent
decline in starts this July, while the West posted no change in
starts activity.
Permit issuance, which can be an indicator of future building
activity, declined 3.1 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual
rateof565,000unitsinJuly.Single-familypermitsfell1.2percent
to 416,000 units, while multifamily permits fell 8 percent to
149,000 units. Regionally, permits fell nearly 26 percent in the
Northeast, 1.1 percent in the Midwest, and 4.9 percent in the
West, but gained 3.9 percent in the South in July.

HOTTER ‘N HELL
By Lee Grace
Roby Christie, the founder and
driving force behind the Hotter
‘N Hell Hundred Bike Ride that
annually attracts more than 12,000
riders from throughout the country,
was the featured speaker at the
August luncheon of the North Texas
Home Builders Association.
To assist in the presentation,
Christie introduced Chip Filer,
current executive director of HHH,
and Sandy Monson, executive
director of Streams & Valleys.
The HHH was organized as part
of the 1982 Centennial of Wichita
Falls. Christie noted that consultants
to the Centennial Committee
suggested a “rocking chair contest”
to highlight the activities. “We
decided on a 100-mile bike ride
instead.” A total of 1,200 riders
participated in that first ride.
Owner of Guarantee Title Company
and a longtime community leader,
Christie said the four-day event,
set for the weekend of August 28,
“will be an opportunity to put our
best foot forward and get the world
involved in Wichita Falls.” It is the
largest single-day bicycle event in
the nation.
“It is a year-around process to
make this event a success. We bring
together social services, medical
services, and all levels of government
to plain and make it a success. Profits
from the event are put back into the
community to fund projects like
the Falls Campaign, the Wee-ChiTah sculpture, the city hike and
bike trail, the River Bend Nature
Center, and the MSU Bicycle
Racing Team.”
Riders can choose any of several
distances to ride - up to a 100 miles.
In addition to the ride, the fourday event also includes a road race,
Criterium Races on Friday and
Sunday, and an off-road bike race.
He said every hotel within 60
miles of the city will be filled for
the event. Riders from every state in
the country plus riders representing
10 nations will be in our city for the
ride. “Our Host Home” program
that places riders in area homes is
another way we’ve made friends
with the world.”
There’s also a consumer show
where more than 100 vendors will
display items. It will be held in the
MPEC Exhibit Hall. Vendors include
manufacturers, retailers, health and
fitness companies show their latest
products and provide information
such as medical education, cycling
information and more.
The restaurant association will
feed approximately 4,000 riders at
the Friday night Spaghetti Dinner.
Christie noted, “This event brings
in a lot of tax revenue for the city.
Close to 30,000 persons come to
Wichita Falls for this event.”
North Texas Home Builders
Association
President
Doug
McCulloch announced that the
Greenbelt Show will be held in Dallas
Oct. 14-16. Long-time member Dub
Dennis will be inducted into the
Texas Association of Builders Hall
of Fame during the Greenbelt Show.
He also said the association will
stage a four-person scramble golf
tournament on Thursday, September
23, at River Creek Golf Course.
Chip Filer, Doug McCulloch, Roby Christie, Dennis Probst, and
Sandy Monson are shown at the August home builders’ luncheon.
