November 2012 OFFICERS President Lori Payne Andale Ready Mix Central lori@andalereadymix.com Vice President Linda Geesaman Central Air Group LGeesaman@centralairco.cm Prose from the Pres, Lori Payne A season of gratitude and oh, do I have so much to be thankful for! Seven of us safely travelled to our Region 6’s Annual Planning Conference in Overland Park. As our hostess, Bev Sauerwein designed an agenda well worth our trip! We made and renewed friendships with other NAWIC members in our region; we shared ideas and successes; and we gained information and relationships which we have brought back to use as valuable resources in our Wichita chapter. Linda Walton, CIT Eby Construction lwalton@ebycorp.com I am also thankful for the motivation that so many of you have shared with me within our NAWIC group here in Wichita. Linda Geesaman has stepped up to the Vice Presidency and has also made great strides in developing our CAD competition for this year; Linda Walton is in the process of finalizing our budget; Jandrea Blumanhourst and Jennifer O’Bar have volunteered to arrange our meetings and tours; June Huie has accepted responsibility for our website; Vicki Tucker has “asked” if she could be our WIC Week chair; Edi Clark is working diligently in planning our Block Kids competition; and Sue Gleason has an excellent report to share about our Wreath sales! Thank you to all for your enthusiasm and willingness to serve our great chapter! DIRECTORS Edi Clark White Star eclark@whitestarmachinery.com We do still need chairs for the golf tournament next summer. Andrea Cole has agreed to take charge of the registration gift bags for the players. We can separate out additional duties so that it isn’t too much for any one person. Page 3 November 2012 Issue Helping Our NAWIC Sisters After Superstorm Sandy As you may know, our NAWIC Chapters on the east coast have been affected by Superstorm Sandy. The Gr. New York Long Island Chapter was hit the hardest. Some of them lost their homes and many of them are still without power and running water. We will be taking up a collection at the Membership Meeting on Tuesday, November 27th in an effort to help them in any way possible! We will take the monetary donations and purchase several Visa gift cards to send their way. Please contribute what you can. If you are not able to attend the meeting but would still like to donate, please contact Lori Payne. Page 4 Members Jennifer Cherry Tracy Rasmussen Lora Schmidt Building Control and Services, Inc. November 2012 Issue Page 5 2012 Region Six Annual Planning Conference Region Six’s Annual Planning Conference was held October 26-27 in Overland Park, Kansas. The Gr. Wichita, Kansas chapter was well represented at APC. Marjorie Awtrey, Linda Geesaman, Sue Gleason, Lori Payne, Rhonda Richardson, Bev Sauerwein and Linda Walton attended. On Friday, October 26, a group volunteered for a Habitat for Humanity build. They had a great time installing insulation in the basement and painting the exterior. Friday night, the Kansas City chapter hosted the NAWIC Your Secret Key to Success. The eleven keys she discussed are: 1. Develop Personal Leadership Skills 2. Communicate Ideas & Concepts 2. Organization & Time Management 3. Improve Communication Skills 4. Assist Creative & Crictical Thinking 5. Deepen Listening & Feedback Skills 6. Teach While Giving Back 7. Gain Fresh Perspectives 8. Expand Business Connections & More 9. Enhance Resume 10. Collaboration is Everything A group from Pittsburgh State University gave a presentation on their participation in the Extreme Makeover: hospitality room allowing everyone the opportunity to catch up with each other. Saturday morning, Bev Sauerwein, Region Six Director, called APC to order and the day of informative, educational and motivational speakers began. But first, Stephanie San Paulo from the Southwest Missouri chapter got our blood pumping by leading all of us in some exercises! Patty Cook talked to us about November 2012 Issue Page 6 2012 Region Six Annual Planning Conference Home Edition in Joplin, Missouri. What an awesome job they did! You could see and hear the pride they had in being a part of the event. After lunch, the auction of the benches and other wood items was held. Auctioneers Alise Martiny and Pattie Pogue did a great job. Over $1,700 was raised for NEF from the auction!! The afternoon session began with a Mock Meeting. It is always good to be reminded of the appropriate manner for the board to conduct business. The ever talented Vickie Nichols from the Kansas City, Missouri chapter did a presentation on membership recruiting titled “Gone Fishin”. Vickie related recruiting new NAWIC members to going fishing. The video that Vickie and crew did was outstanding—very informative, funny and so creative! Sally Wurtzler from the St. Joseph, Missouri chapter gave some tips on how to submit a winning Block Kids project to the regional competition. The five steps she gave were: 1. Get the story. 2. Neatness counts. 3. Join the digital revolution. 4. Less is more. 5. Capture the cute. The 2012 APC was a well-attended, worthwhile event. There were 57 wonderful NAWIC women in attendance. Bev Sauerwein did an amazing job in planning it. Plan on attending the next regional or national event — it will give you a whole new perspective of NAWIC and the outstanding women involved with it. In fact, you won’t even need to travel to get to the next regional event—2013 Forum is in Wichita! Great event! Region Six Rocks!
