Al- though it wasn't so much a typical SFBA meeting as a celebration of Jeff Barrett's arrival to the west coast. Jeff, as I am sure you know, drove his Corvair named “Spot” from the east coast to the west coast in support of MakeA-Wish foundation. When I arrived Harry's had set three tables aside for us. Because it was almost 7 and I was the only one at this time, I felt seating for 10 would be sufficient. But as more and more people showed up it became apparent that one or two additional tables would be required. The staff at Harry's found us the extra seats just in time. In the end fifteen people attended the meeting counting Jeff and his wife. Tomorrow he heads to Bodega Bay for the official end of journey photos of the Corvair's wheels touching the Pacific Ocean. On Saturday there is a car show in Folsom (not strictly Corvair) hosted by Corvairs of River City. We listened intently to his wonderful stories. Sure sounds like fun (if you have the time)! He has lots of photos on his web site Internet Web email http://Clubs.Hemmings.com/CorsaNews CaCalkins@astound.net (www.c2cforthekids.com).The car will prepped for its long ride home (it will be towed by Jeff's brother). Jeff and his wife will fly as they can't be away from work any longer. (see Letter... on page 6) On The Cover: SFBA was honored to host Jeff Barrett and his wife this evening in support of their quest to raise money for Make-A-Wish foundation. Jeff started with his Corvair tires touching the Atlantic will end when they touch the Pacific at Bodega Bay. Quite a ride! Check out all of the details at www.c2cforthekids.com. Very impressive! Nice looking interior. Check out those floor mats! Nice setup. In the middle of the floorboard Jeff mounted an inverter. Perfect for those long drives with a DVD player. In case you want to contribute there is a drop box built in to the hood! “Spot” all hooked and ready for the ride home. SFBA Corsa - May 2015 Update On Rob Massari’s ‘64 Spyder Last weekend I was able to pull the engine out of my 1964 Spyder Coupe that was rear-ended on highway 80.It is sitting on an engine crate for a turbine engine as a stand.No. The PT6 is not going into the Spyder. ha-ha-ha I'll keep you updated as the project goes along. Right now the engine over heating caused two cylinders #1 and #6 to have low compression. #1 reads 90 and is leaking past the piston rings. #6 reads 95 and is leaking past the intake valve. All the rest read about 135 to 145.There's only about 1,000 miles on this engine. Damn. It was the classic case of the fan belt breaking causing an overheat. When we installed the new electrical harness from Ron Frances Wiring my buddy helping did not hook up the red GEN annunciator light. Damn. I was in charge, so I'm to blame, but the GEN light not coming on and the chaos/noise of highway 80 meant that I did not know the belt broke until I got off the highway. As I was coasting to the shoulder was when I was rearended. Of course then I noticed the high oil temperature. I cc'ed Seth because I'm sure he's seen many "belt broke overheats" and may have some insight about what to expect inside the engine. Hope you guys have a great weekend. Respectfully, Rob Massari We've pulled some of the shrouds off so far. Will try to make more progress this weekend. SFBA Corsa - May 2015 page 5 Letter... Treasurers Report – May 2015 Fred Garrity Following dinner we all went outside for a photo shoot with the Corvair. Fortunately Jeff found a great spot right in front of the restaurant. I think the '61 sedan's mileage is correct, though the car's had some bad storage and was subject to a lot of short trips, driven by the local reservation's Native Americans who helped out Ted's aunt on her ranch in San Jacinto. The delicate 700 seat fabric on the bottom cushion of the driver's seat isn't torn, which it surely would be if the mileage was 108600. A couple pics are attached.
