Bruno O’Hara has worked in film and
television since 1997, then became a
professional photographer in 2007. In
between all of his projects, Bruno donates his skills to the residents of the
Burbank Animal Shelter because he
believes animals in shelters “are survivors beyond our understanding; they
need and deserved love...now.”
Bruno notes that his style is “Just
Be; nothing contrived because he
believes “people need to see how
beautiful they truly are”; bringing that style to our Happy Tails
Hikes and around the shelter has
definitely produced some wonderful shots. For more photos, or to
have Bruno shoot your event visit

Putting the Therapeutic Power of Animals to Great Use
When you are sure that you want to adopt a dog or a cat from a shelter, the first
step you’ve already taken is recognizing how much adopting a shelter animal
can make a difference. You may have also heard of the many benefits animals
can provide their owners or anyone who interacts with them. Specially trained
dogs that go beyond companionship with their owners and family by helping the sick, elderly, and kids. These dogs are called Certified Therapy Dogs.
Certified Therapy animals are specially trained animals who have a knack at
doing just that with nearly anyone. From nursing homes to schools, hospitals
and military facilities, these animals work to help many of those in need.
Any age dog can be trained to be a therapy dog. The old phrase, “you can’t
teach an old dog new tricks”, just doesn’t hold water. Any dog that is adopted from a shelter needs to be trained basic skills and any age. This training sets the foundation for advanced training and allows your dog to create a
bond with you and your family.
There are many organizations around the country where dogs (and cats!)
come together to visit places like nursing homes and hospitals to help those

with a variety of medical conditions. The animals help in a variety of ways
from soothing nerves of anxious patients, helping others to communicate and break down barriers that have been otherwise difficult
to overcome. Many of the animals in these groups come from animal rescues and shelter dogs. Most of them were not adopted as
puppies and are mixed breeds. They are doing important work from visiting nursing homes to lift spirits of residents to visiting the
United States Military Academy at West Point to help soldiers returning from war and cadets receive stress. Therapy dogs also help
at schools for special needs children, and libraries where the dogs help children improve their reading skills.
The best way to begin training your future therapy dog is to let your new dog become comfortable with his new family and then start
training. Modern techniques for training are fun and use only positive reinforcement methods. There are many training centers,
where these methods are used. Look for trainers that belong to the “Association of Pet Dog Trainers”, or APDT. Shelter dogs come
from a diverse background and end up at shelters for many different reasons. The first and most important steps is for you, your
family, and your new dog to become comfortable with each other. Many of the obstacles that these dogs have upon adoption can be
corrected or just disappear once trust is gained by your dog. These intelligent creatures aim to please so patience is a virtue. Do your
homework and research and keep your sense of humor. Your dog will not only be a therapy dog for others but also for you!
The wonderful staff and Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter provide great care and love to the animals as they are residents
there. They are evaluated and socialized to prepare them for their forever homes. It’s just as important for you, as the potential
adopter, to do your homework and know the dog (cat, or bunny) that you thought you were there to adopt isn’t the right dog for
you, but another resident is. There is nothing more harmful to a dog who is adopted and brought back to the shelter, so be sure
you can care, train and love a dog throughout its life.
Whether your new best friend is set to be a therapy dog or just your best friend, providing a forever home to our shelter residents
saves 2 lives - the one you’re adopting and making room for the next resident at the shelter. Get ready to lose your heart to your
furry friend because he will lose his heart to you!

BURBANK ANIMAL SHELTER
Bronson has been an amazing addition to our little family.
He is so sweet and affectionate it is unbelievable. His favorite activities are hiking,
going to the dog park, snuggling, and what we fondly call ‘when puppies attack’
where he will wrap his little paws around your shoulder in a hug and kiss you to
death! When I saw him at the shelter it was love at first sight. I walked up to his
kennel and he nudged his little kennel mate out of the way sat down and licked
my fingers through the grating while looking at me with his sweet little face. My
husband and I were warned that he had come from an abuse situation and was
showing some signs of food aggression. I mention this as I think all adopters
should know that what you see at the shelter is not necessarily what you get at
home. Bronson has no food aggression issues at all, is great with all dogs, and
has a special place in his heart for little kids and
babies who he is infatuated with. He has been
part of our family for two months now, and he
is happy, healthy, and a great little snuggle bug.
He even has a favorite toy, a stuffed lamb chop’s
from lamb chops play along which he takes to
bed every night, where he proceeds to groom
her and snuggle with her, and then picks her up
first thing in the morning to take out for first
walk. Bronson is an amazing, sweet, energetic,
intelligent, athletic boy, and we are so thankful to
the Burbank Animal Shelter for introducing him
to us, and making our family complete.

What were you doing Thanksgiving Day? Dealing with relatives, endless cooking and cleaning, football mania and turkey coma? Not so for our dedicated
Running Team!
For the second year, the VBAS utilized the Burbank YMCA’s Turkey Trot event to
hold a fundraiser called “Running Them Home”. A team of 14 walking, running,
committed volunteers, and their friends, completed either the 5 or 10k distance at the
downtown Burbank event on Thanksgiving morning.
The team spent months soliciting donations from family, friends, coworkers, and the
community at large while they were also in training. Generosity was shown in full
force as all those requests were answered many times over. Through the kindness of
many people, the team first met their fundraising goal - and then surpassed it! These
donations encouraged them to face race day full of determination. Each member of
the team worked hard to cross the finish line.
The funds raised directly enrich the lives of animal residents at the Burbank Animal
Shelter. Examples of such enrichment include upgrades to doggie play areas, new
tools and toys for dog and cat exercise, and new training equipment.
The animal residents, the entire VBAS, and especially the Running Team, would like
to thank each and every person who donated. An extra big Thank You is sent out
to corporate sponsors, The Story Tavern, who charitably backed the team this year.

Dear
...I’ve been at this big cave that is mostly flat walls and a few humans. I am here
with my brothers and sisters and it seems like a nice quiet place. When we first
got here, I didn’t feel very well. Neither did my sisters. But the humans in the
cave took us to see other humans. This kind looking human did some magic and
we are feeling much better. We think he’s called the vet but I kept falling asleep
so don’t really remember.
The humans in the den have been really good about meals. My stomach makes
funny noises when I’m hungry. I’m always busy playing with my new red ball so
I’m glad my stomach is talking to the humans for me.
Sometimes the smaller size human sits with us and plays with our toys. The
taller humans gives us warm hugs with their paws and takes us outside the big
cave too. I am excited about the next week. I want to see that green thing on
the ground outside the cave. I really think it’s talking to me. Playtime is the best!

SPoNSORS
In California, wintertime temperatures are usually moderate.
However, cats (and their humans) can still experience a case of the
blues as temperatures drop. From changes in energy levels and sleep
patterns to increased appetite, cats can
be adversely affected by the change of
seasons. Fortunately, there are plenty
of ways to help brighten kitty’s mood.
Let the light in! There is a reason cats love to
bask in puddles of sunshine. Not only does
the sun warm kitty up, but it brightens mood
and stimulates metabolism. So even if it is
cold out, pull back the drapes to let in as
much natural sunlight as possible.
Make playtime a priority. Spending at least
thirty minutes a day giving kitty your undivided attention can help cats build self-confidence, as well as stave off boredom, and
reduce stress. This is a good time to brush
and groom your cat as well as introduce new
toys. Feather wands, fishing toys, tunnels,
and puzzle toys are a great way to help kitty
exercise and stimulate her mind.
Prepare for the season. During the winter,
many entertain guests or have parties. New
people and sounds can be stressful to cats.
Set aside a quiet place for kitty to relax away
from the holiday cheer. Just like people, cats sometimes eat for comfort or
when bored. If kitty is eating more than usual and packing on the pounds,
talk to a veterinarian about adjusting food portions during the winter months.
Keep older cats in mind. Those with arthritis may suffer from stiff joints, and
have trouble jumping when the weather
turns chilly. Relaxing on a soft, warm
bed helps ease some of the pain and
stiffness. If using heated bedding make
sure it is safe and that your cat can easily move away if it gets too warm.
Don’t forget to keep an eye out for outdoor cats who may seek out parked
cars for shelter and warmth. A quick tap
on the hood or honk of the horn before
starting your engine on a frosty morning
can help avoid a terrible accident.
Most importantly, a little extra love, and attention can go a long way in helping
stave off any winter time blues your cat may be experiencing.
