MISSION STATEMENT
The Saint Paul the Apostle School Endowment Fund is an endowed fund dedicated to
securing the legacy of St. Paul the Apostle School.
Our goal is $4,000,000.
The principal is invested to generate interest income.
The interest earned will be distributed to the school to:
• support faculty excellence
• keep tuition affordable
• provide income for school improvements and repairs.
The Endowment Fund is a plan for our future generations of students.

Dear Friends,
We are delighted to present you with our
newest edition of the St. Paul the Apostle
School Endowment Newsletter. The biannual
publication will provide the perfect
opportunity to acknowledge our cherished
donors to the Endowment Fund, as well as to
highlight recent events and accomplishments
within our school community.
As we mourn the death of our pastor,
Father Tom Jones, and welcome the arrival of
our new pastor, Father John Ardis, it is
especially fitting that we come together and
celebrate what we love about St. Paul’s.
By providing for our future, the School
Endowment Fund ensures that coming
generations will continue to enjoy the best
aspects of our school, from our close
relationship with our Parish and the Paulist
Fathers, to camaraderie with friends at events
such as the Fall Festival. The strong emphasis
on intellectual curiosity and learning is
represented by our new school library. This
facility is an outstanding addition to the
curriculum and furthers the mission statement
of our school: the education of the whole
child.
We thank you for all that you currently do
to enrich our community, and also for your
continued commitment to the future of
St. Paul the Apostle School.

The 2006 SPA Fall Festival, “Surf’s Up St. Paul’s” set a new fundraising record for the 4th year in a
row. The $500,000 will be used to continue to improve the SPA School facilities including new
school bathrooms and upgraded electrical wiring. We bid a fond “Aloha” to Matt McCoy &
Danny Amos and thank them for their many years of wit and warmth as our fabulous auctioneers.

Over 80 SPA Seniors were guests of the PWC at the
annual Christmas Luncheon on Dec. 13, 2006. This
annual holiday treat included performances by the
Paulist Choristers and our Kindergarten students with
a surprise visit by Santa Claus.
The St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Community was
one of the proud sponsors of the Westside
Thanksgiving Day Dinner Celebration at the Santa
Monica Civic Auditorium. The St. Paul Community
collected hygiene items and food for the over 3000
guests who came from all walks of life: from homeless individuals and working poor families to college
students unable to get home for the holiday.

Welcome Father Ardis
It is with a great deal of pleasure that I look
forward to serving as Pastor of St. Paul the Apostle in
Westwood, CA. I come among you as one who
desires to serve, and I look forward to coming to
know the parish, it’s parishioners, needs and
ministries. I am firmly dedicated to a collaborative
style of ministry, recognizing and believing that all of
us through Baptism have been called to share in the
ministry of Jesus Christ. I consider my approach to be
one of openness, desiring to hear the needs of all in
the parish, and striving to meet those needs with the
professional and volunteer ministerial staff. I am ever
grateful for the dedication of the present staff, both
parish and school, and for Fr. Brad Schoeberle who
has served you well as the administrator these eight
months. I am ever grateful for the ministry of Fr. Tom
Jones among you, and pray that his ministry and
vision among you will be carried forward during my
years with you.
I have just finished eight and a half years of ministry in Boston as the Director of The Paulist Center
and local superior, and I pray that my gifts and talents will complement the many gifts and talents of
the ministerial staff and each of you. I am hopeful
that I will serve a full eight year term with each of you
and that we can celebrate God’s journey in our lives
together each and every day during that time. I
come to you having taken a three month sabbatical
to renew my batteries and restore my energy. I pray
our time together will be filled with joyful prayer and
an abundance of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

St. Paul the Apostle
School Turns 70
On Saturday, April 29, 2006 we celebrated 70 years
of St. Paul the Apostle School:
learning, growing and serving. The power of the
St. Paul the Apostle Parish Spirit continues in
partnership with the Daughters of Mary & Joseph,
the Paulist Fathers and the many lay men and
women who continue to collaborate with us.
During the past 70 years, over 20,000 children have
been the beneficiaries of an outstand Catholic
Education and have received the foundation for
a faith filled life.

St. Paul the Apostle School proudly celebrates the Weber family as one of the growing number of three generations of families
to attend St. Paul the Apostle School. For over 70 years, the SPA mission and tradition of Catholic education has been the
foundation for families like the Webers.
We spoke to the Weber & Butler families about some of their favorite memories of St. Paul’s.
Class of 2012
What teacher/priest touched your life and what lesson did they teach you?
Mr. Weber: Sr. Josephine – she was pretty
Allison: Father Carroll taught me to be kind to everyone.
Reilly: Father Bud touched my life because he told us that we could make a difference in the world.
Hilary: Father Bud taught us to put a little love in your heart and the world will be a better place.
Mason: Mrs. G (Gaciano) taught me to try hard.

What was your favorite subject and why?
Mr. Weber: Arithmetic – I like numbers
Allison: Math was my favorite subject because I understood it. Mr. Rosadini was my teacher.
Reilly: PE because I get outdoors and exercise which makes me happy.
Hilary: Science and PE because they are fun and I’m good at them.
Mason: PE because we get fresh air and playtime.
Who was the principal and what did you like about her?
Mr. Weber: Mother Mary Chantal, D.M.J.
Allison: Sister Stella was my principal and I liked her because she was fair.
Reilly: Sister Stella is kind and always trying the help us.
Hilary: Sister Stella is my principal and I like that she let’s us do fun things.
Mason: Sister Stella is a nice person.
Do you remember one big political/national event that occurred while you were at St. Paul’s?
Mr. Weber: The second world war ended
Allison: I remember watching President Ford being sworn in as President while we were in science lab down stairs.
Reilly: When I was in 2nd grade the election for who was to be president for the United States occurred and George W. Bush won.
Mason: No. (Please note Mason is in kindergarten)
What kind of car would your parents pick you up in?
Mr. Weber: A woody convertable
Allison: My mother only drove on Fridays because we had 5 families in carpool.
She picked us up in a station wagon and there were 11 – 13 children in carpool.
Reilly: My mom picks in up in the white Ford.
Hilary: My mom picks me up in a big, white, fun car.
Mason: My Mom picks me up in a SUV.
New St. Paul the Apostle
Library Honors Sr. Stella
The moment the school bell rings, whether at recess or class
dismissal, an eager line forms in front of the newly and beautifully
refurbished St. Paul the Apostle School Library.
“This is a community of avid readers,” says librarian Leslie
Witten. “ I have to set a capacity at the end of the day, because
children want to come to the library. They are literally busting
down the doors.”
A large-scale community effort has created a true haven for
the students at St. Paul’s. The
new library boasts an open,
aesthetically pleasing environment with bright colors and
comfortable lighting; electronic
resources and a dramatic boost
to the print collection, made
possible by generous donations
raised by St. Paul’s parents and
the SPA School Foundation. As a
longtime member of the school
family, Witten has seen these
developments evolve from start
to finish.
“Some of our really dynamic

parent volunteers that were on

the PWC started talking about how we need to re-do the library,”
Witten remembers. “They were the ones who sparked the flames.
The School Foundation jumped on board right away with their
financial support.”
Encouraged constantly by school families and by administrators, Witten began to compile three different design proposals for
the Foundation to approve. Parent volunteers continued to share
ideas. They also encouraged other community members to join
the effort. When parent architect Ned Engs became part of the
project, the dream grew even closer to reality.
With so many different people involved, it is a wonder that all
parties managed to keep one important secret about the new
library – that it would be named after beloved principal, Sister
Stella Maria Enright.
“Everyone knows to what extent Sr. Stella is the heart of this
school,” Witten remarks with a smile. “She is
synonymous with the name of St. Paul’s.
Naming the library after her was a great secret
to keep.”
A real collaboration between so many dedicated parents, friends, and administrators, the
library also represents the heart of the school.
It has become a place where our children
come excitedly to gather, learn, and grow.
“We’ve repeated to each other throughout this whole process: if you build it, they will come,” says Witten. “And that is true – so true.”

TRIBUTE
Remembering Fr. Tom Jones
Did you know that Father Tom
played a game with 8th grade
called "Stump the Priest?" In
that game we were able to ask
any question that came to
mind. We found Father Tom
to be unlike any priest we have
known. The point of the game
was to ask a question that
Father Tom could not answer.
I cannot remember that ever
happening. From his answers,
we could tell that Father Tom
really had no regrets. He lived
life to the fullest and made
the best of every situation he
found himself in. He enriched
the lives of all those people
lucky enough to meet him.
As 8th graders, we count
ourselves among the group that
he touched each time he came
to class.

Did you know, that Father Tom
was a hockey referee? Yep,
the guy with the striped shirt
and the whistle. He refereed
all ages of hockey players,
from 3-year-olds who didn't
know where to stand, to adults
who sometimes needed to be
reminded about good
sportsmanship. He always
wanted both teams to do their
best, give everything they had to
the game, and at the end, be
able to shake hands and
congratulate each other on a
game well played. Father Tom
loved all sports and kept up on
every one. Hockey may have
been his favorite, but we
learned from him that in
sports, and in life, you must
play fair, do your best,
and have fun!
