The jeweller discreetly informs the husband, who then buys them for his mistress, who’s just leaving for Constantinople, where she is obliged to sell them to a Baron, who in turn presents them to Madame, who by then has become his lover... Although thematically the tale is the stuff of farce, the wit here is subtler, and the morality more complex and mannered. This is a highly rewarding, elegant period piece by a master auteur. 04 NON-CURRENT RELEASES & SPECIAL EVENTS E Dir: Edwin Thanhouser Tickets: £8.50 full, £7.50 conc, £6.50 members US 1910 - 1913, 110mins approx Arabic with English Subtitles FREE SCREENING All About Burley Sun 09th Jun - 2pm E Documentary UK 2013, 40mins www.burleychampions.blogspot.co.uk ALL ABOUT BURLEY is a charming community film which explores the history of Burley through the eyes of young children and the memories of older residents. A wedding soon follows, and the happy couple move in with Mounir’s adoptive father Dr Pinget. As the couple have four beautiful daughters, tensions rise between Murielle and the controlling doctor. Director Lafosse's intense, multilayered dissection of an unorthodox family unit is based on real-life events. Dequenne won the Best Actress award in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes for her devastating portrayal of a young woman losing her mind. Conor Masterson’s film IN THE DEEP SHADE is not a ‘definitive’ career-spanning documentary of influential Irish rock/folk band The Frames. Nor is it a fly-on-the-wall expose or an usagainst-the-world hero saga. It is, simply put, a stark and beautiful portrait of an extraordinary band, a band who have played together for over 20 years. With a photographer’s eye and a painterly aesthetic, Masterson examines the ever-evolving relationship between five musicians who’ve known each other for many years, and over the course of those years have developed an almost unspoken and intuitive way of playing music together. 12 NEW RELEASES Beware of Mr. Baker 31st May - 06th Jun 15 Dir: Jay Bulger Documentary feat: Ginger Baker, Femi Kuti, Eric Clapton US 2012 , 92mins When a documentary opens with its subject belting the director hard on the nose, you know you’re in for something pretty unusual and the legendary drummer Ginger Baker certainly is that. Inspired by great post-war jazz players like Phil Seamen and Max Roach, Baker is best known for his work with Eric Clapton in Cream though it was later when he left for Nigeria in pursuit of musical icon Fela Kuti that he truly came into his own as an artist. BEWARE OF MR. BAKER features fascinating archive footage, interviews with the man himself and his musical peers as well as family members offering up a stunning insight into a true original. Lindholm is one of the most exciting filmmakers working in Denmark at the moment with writing credits on Thomas Vinterberg’s THE HUNT and acclaimed drama series BORGEN. With A HIJACKING Lindholm has crafted an intense, meticulously researched and nail-biting thriller about contemporary piracy. The Iceman 07th - 13th Jun 15 Gimme The Loot 08th, 09th and 12th Jun Dir: Ariel Vromen Starring: Michael Shannon, James Franco, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta US 2012, 106mins Dir: Adam Leon Starring: Ty Hickson, Tashiana Washington, Joshua Rivera US 2012, 81mins With complex thrillers like TAKE SHELTER and PREMIUM RUSH recently under his belt, Shannon is emerging as the go-to guy for damaged-goods anti-heroes. In his portrayal of real-life freelance killer Richard Kuklinski he emits a certain quiet, psychopathic menace that is truly chilling. Married to his unsuspecting teenage sweetheart, Kuklinski is hired to do the dirty work for the more overtly nasty New Jersey gangster Roy Demeo. It’s a simple tale of killer take all - or at any rate, most - but Shannon’s considerable presence, and the gritty ’70s look created by director Ariel Vromen, ensure that THE ICEMAN exerts an unyielding grip on its audience. Malcolm and Sofia, two determined teens from the Bronx, are the ultimate graffitiwriters. When a rival gang buffs their latest masterpiece, they must hatch a plan to get revenge by tagging an iconic NYC landmark, but they need to raise $500 to pull off their spectacular scheme. Over the course of two whirlwind, sunsoaked summer days, Malcolm and Sofia travel on an epic urban adventure involving black market spray cans, illicit bodegas, stolen sneakers, a high stakes heist, and a beautiful, stoned girl whose necklace is literally their key to becoming the biggest writers in the City. NEW RELEASES 13 Much Ado About Nothing 14th - 20th June Populaire 14th - 20th June 12A Dir: Joss Whedon Starring: Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Fran Kranz US 2012, 107mins Dir: Régis Roinsard Starring: Romain Duris, Déborah François, Bérénice Bejo FR 2012, 111mins French with English Subtitles Much in the spirit of the play on which it’s based, Joss Whedon’s version of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy was filmed in his Santa Monica mansion in just 12 days. The simplicity of the production is enhanced by the decision to shoot in monochrome and to retain much of Shakespeare’s dialogue. That strategy is further supported by a cast of mainly TV actors from Whedon’s past projects, with Acker and Denisof especially effective as the combative ex- lovers Beatrice and Benedick, who are persuaded by some visiting noblemen to kiss and make up.The result is a pacey, amusing work that even Shakespeare-phobes will find engaging. Spring, 1958. 21-year-old Rose lives with her grouchy widower father. Engaged to the son of the local mechanic, she seems destined for the quiet life. But that's not the life Rose longs for. When she travels to Normandy, where charismatic insurance agency boss Louis is advertising for a secretary, the ensuing interview is a disaster. But Rose reveals a special gift - she can type at extraordinary speeds. Roinsard’s debut is a little bit THE ARTIST and, thanks to its charismatic leads, a lot Rock Hudson/Doris Day. With luscious cinematography and perfect period set and costume design POPULAIRE is a pleasurable treat for all the senses. 14 NEW RELEASES PG Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes) 15th, 16th and 19th Jun Dir: Werner Herzog Starring: Klaus Kinski, Cecilia Rivera, Ruy Guerra, Helena Rojo DE 1972, 95mins German with English Subtitles Perhaps the most famed and well-regarded collaboration between New German Cinema director Werner Herzog and his frequent leading man, Klaus Kinski. This tale of megalomania and doomed obsession in 16th-century Peru sees Spanish conquistadors penetrate mountains and rainforests in search of the mythical city of El Dorado. AGUIRRE is a hypnotic and haunting fever dream of a film that more than deserves its reputation as an essential piece of world cinema. The version screening is a newly restored digital re-release of the film from the BFI. Before Midnight From Fri 21st Jun (TBC) Dir: Richard Linklater Starring: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy US 2013, 108mins Taking place nine years after BEFORE SUNSET the final episode in Linklater’s trilogy retains its core simplicity: two lovers discuss their lives and love during a single day. Co-writers Hawke and Delpy are the now very grown-up Paris-based couple, but here we find them holidaying in Greece and pondering their future and that of their twin girls, born since we last met the pair. Long takes and extended dialogue provide plenty of room for the characters to develop over the course of the film, with Hawke and Delpy admirably conveying the subtleties of a durable but far from uncomplicated union which constantly reminds us of the challenges - and rewards - of keeping such a partnership alive. Something In The Air (Après mai) 22nd and 26th Jun 15 Dir: Olivier Assayas Starring: Clement Metayer, Lola Creton, Felix Armand FR 2012, 122mins French with English subtitles The latest film from the French auteur behind IRMA VEP and SUMMER HOURS, Olivier Assayas, is again inspired by the revolutionary France that spawned his 2010 TV miniseries CARLOS THE JACKAL. SOMETHING IN THE AIR begins with a couple of moody, middle-class students who, having been somewhat radicalised by the events in Paris of May 1968, flee to Italy with their friend Alain after accidentally wounding a security guard. There they fall in with activist filmmakers, before disillusionment and romantic machinations change their lives. An honest, beautifully shot paean to youthful idealism and its consequences. I Am Nasrine Sun 23rd Jun - 2.15pm 15 Dir: Tina Gharavi Starring: Micsha Sadeghi, Shiraz Haq, Christian Coulson UK 2012, 88mins When you change where you are, does who you are change too? I AM NASRINE is an intimate journey of self-discovery, a film that is both startlingly beautiful and quietly profound. Set in modern day Tehran and the UK, the film follows the paths of Nasrine and Ali, a sister and brother from a comfortable, middle class Iranian home. Following a run in with the police Nasrine’s father decides to send her and Ali to the perceived safety of the UK. As Nasrine and Ali find themselves in a completely new land, exiled from all that is familiar to them, for the first time they are able to find their own paths. NEW RELEASES 15
