A
s we enter Seabury Hall’s 50th year, we will celebrate the five
decades of outstanding education which has produced more than
2000 Seabury Hall alumni. In 1964 when the school opened its doors
as a boarding school for girls, its commitment was to provide a strong
college preparatory program infused with strong character values. It
transitioned into a co-educational day school which continued to grow
its outstanding reputation, not only on Maui, but throughout the state
and the country. The entire Seabury Hall community is grateful for
the generosity of all who shared in the school’s vision and who truly
understand the power of education.
Our alumni share their gifts and talents around the world. They are quick
to report that their success is, in no small part, due to the exceptional
teachers, the fine program of instruction, extra-curricular opportunities
and a caring community that teaches the importance of responsibility.
Throughout the course of this school year we will be celebrating this
milestone with students through special assemblies that focus on the
history of the school and with celebrations that coincide with special
events such as Aunt Kate Cooper’s birthday. It is important for us all to
gain an understanding of how we evolved into the fine school that we
are. The foundation is on the backs of those first students who were
the pioneers that led the way to our current success. The Seabury Hall
community is grateful to those who set the tone, had the courage to try
another path, and inspired all to develop the mission that makes this
school truly a special place.

Our 50th year will culminate with a week-long celebration during the
summer of 2014. This event will offer an opportunity for all who have
participated in the school over these many years to celebrate together our
success. It will undoubtedly be an extraordinary experience for all.
Betsy Erdman
I would like to finish by sharing a quote from a new teacher to Seabury
Hall. This teacher has spent the past 12 years teaching in two well-known
and highly respected independent schools. He stated, I finally feel like I have
joined the big leagues. For all who have attended this school, you can be
proud to know that you were part of the creation of a “major league team”.

History Department Chair Casey Asato received
this year’s honored Betsy Erdman Professional
Development Award Recipient
Among the constellations, it’s hard to say why a particular cluster of lights, let alone
an individual one, pleases its viewer more than another. I am humbled and thankful to
have been selected among my colleagues—an ensemble of stars—as the recipient of
the Betsy Erdman Faculty Professional Development Award 2013.
The privilege to teach talented children in a special
community of dedicated and caring educators, parents,
administrators, and trustees is unique and a gift.

The 40th Annual Craft Fair
With the support of over 1,500
volunteers, the 40th Annual Craft Fair
was an amazing community event.
Along with the generosity of assorted

Although Mallory attended
Seabury Hall for only one
year, she is one of the most
active, dedicated and
generous alumni.
Mallory has served Seabury
Hall selflessly for many
years, both as an employee
and as a volunteer. As a
board member and as
Alumni Coordinator, she
helped to elevate the work
of the Alumni Association
Board. Mallory worked
tirelessly on the Capital
Campaign to raise money to
build the new Upper School.
She is responsible for the
inception of Maunalei Notes.

LaVelle Byers Allen is busy with her granddaughter, Celine, three days a week when they
enjoy gardening, cooking, and long walks to play
in the park. Fresh vegetables from her garden
each day make for some yummy meals. She always
seems to have visitors and she had a revolving
door of houseguests in August including Monica
Reynolds and Candy Rutherford ’71 Hibner, as
well as friends from China.
Monica Reynolds Gardner drove up to Portland
to visit other Seabury Hall alumni and reminisce
about back in the day. She is an avid golfer and enjoys life with her husband and two daughters who
live nearby. She is planning a trip to Canada soon
and is looking forward to that adventure.

Ginger Curtis (photo right) and Candy Rutherford Hibner met up one night when Ginger had
a brief layover in Phoenix. They had not seen each
other in 42 years, but time had not erased all the
fun memories of their friendship at Seabury Hall,
especially
when they
were roommates. Ginger
and her
husband are
empty nesters as their
daughter is
attending college out of state.
Candy Rutherford Hibner (above left) teaches
part time in a private school and enjoys her
afternoons pursuing hobbies such as scrapbooking. Their daughter was married this summer
at a destination wedding at the beach, which
brought back many wonderful memories of
living near the ocean. Pat Hunt Passon and partner, Charlotte, love
their decision to move north from California to
Oregon. Pat is still working as a financial planner.
Playing the ukulele is her latest interest and she
improves every day. She also collects vintage fountain pens with the oldest being from 1933.
Seabury Hall alumni gathered in Portland in early
August. (L-R) LaVelle Byers ‘70 Allen, Debbie Holden

Barb Howell Shepherd works as registrar at
Mercer Island High School where she lives with her

spare time quilting, gardening and reading, and
spending time with her four adult children.

Halley Allison Maza is working to finish her
dual master’s degree in school counseling

University in Norfolk, Virginia. Halley shares, “I was
the recipient of the 2013 Exemplary Professional
School Counselor award from the Hampton Roads
School Leadership Team, a regional, collaborative
partnership between school counseling educators
from five universities and school counseling
supervisors from eight school divisions. I was
both humbled and honored to receive this award
as it was voted on by faculty members and there
were 5 stellar nominees from ODU. Other than
that I am busy with my role as VP for the Golden
Key honor society, traveling to present research
at a few national conferences, and my Graduate
Assistantship at the Dean’s Office in the College
of Education. In my ‘after school hours,’ I am
volunteering as the signature issues chair for the
community engagement council of the Junior
League of Norfolk and Virginia Beach and, when
the day is done, head home to my awesome
husband and puppy. “
Editor’s Note: In addition to Halley’s many
accomplishments above, look how many class notes
she collected! You are amazing, Halley!
From Bonnie Blair: “Hello, class of 05 friends! Nice
to feel connected to so many awesome people and
happenings out there. I’m living on the Hilo side of
the Big Island working with Megan Boren at Skyline Eco Adventures Akaka Falls Zipline. Let us know
if you ever make it out to jump on a zipline tour.
I’m loving the Big Island and the pace of life here.
Besides work, everything is pretty normal with me.
Life is good! Lots of love to you all!”
Kate Cappe reports, “This summer, I have been
living in Paso Robles, California completing two
externships at animal hospitals. I am going into
my third year of veterinary school at Oklahoma
State University. I am most interested in internal
medicine and oncology, and hope to get an internship after graduating in May 2015! Never thought I
would end up going from Maui to the Midwest but
it has been a great experience. During my fourth
year of school, we have to complete 16 weeks of
hospital rotations at hospitals around the world,
and I am considering doing two of my weeks at
Animal Care Hospital in Kula.”
An update from Jonathan Clark: “The majority
of my efforts for the past four years have been
directed towards my work as a visual artist, and
I’ve been fortunate enough to show in a number
of exhibits throughout Hawaii during this time. I
recently moved back to Maui, after spending one
year in Japan studying printmaking as a research
student at Kyoto Seika University. The year in Japan
absolutely flew by and sometimes feels like simply
a dream – but I had the opportunity to learn countless new techniques and gain new insights into a
culture that has become so much a part of my work
as an artist. If you’d like to see some of my portfolio,
check out jyclark.com. I am currently preparing
(frantically!) for an upcoming solo show at the
Hui No‘eau, which runs through September 20th.
Those of you on Maui, I would be ecstatic if you
have a chance to visit the show while it’s up! Other
than that, I’m taking this year at home to figure out
which direction to take from this point on. Being a
visual artist is no easy task, but for those willing to
work hard at it and keep a LOT of faith, the emotional fulfillment justifies all of those late nights in
studio. Julia (Cost): I’m probably in the same boat
as you! And by the way, your paintings are so fresh
and inspiring! “
Heather Colvin shares, “I moved from Miami to
Brooklyn almost a year ago and LOVE it! I work in
Soho at Lululemon as a member of their leadership
team and as one of our area’s community reps. I
guess in a way I’m kind of using my journalism degree as I sometimes contribute to our national blog
as well. It’s lots of yoga, yoga, yoga which I love
because I’m a certified teacher and most of all it’s a
pretty great community to be a part of. Also life is
better when lived in stretchy black pants. My sister
and I have been roommates since I got here. And
my boyfriend James just recently moved in as well.”
News from Riley Coon: “This has been the best
year of my life! 1–I married the most amazing
woman, Jenny Sawyer, on April 6! She’s originally
from Marietta, Georgia and has been living on Maui
since 2009. We did a honeymoon in Thailand, and
a second one in Alaska. 2–I am officially an uncle to
the daughter of my oldest sister, Mei Li ’99. Cutest
baby in the world! 3–Trilogy celebrated 40 years
of operation this summer and I am continuing the
business on as an operation manager and captain.”

Julia Cost oil on canvas
“On Top of the World”
2005 •
Julia Cost graduated with her MFA in Dance from
UC Irvine in 2011, and since then has been living in
Berkeley while participating in the San Francisco/
Bay Area dance and art scenes. “I have been having choreographic residencies and performances
of my dance theater work at a small theater in
SF called The Garage. This past year I launched a
small dance theater collective called Nine Shards.
Check out our website at cargocollective.com/
nineshards. This summer, we are performing our
newest evening-length dance theater work at
ODC Theater, a beautiful theater in SF, through a
program called Summer Performance Festival. I have
been working as the summer program coordinator
at SF Conservatory of Dance, a pre-professional
dance school, for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. For
the past few years I have been painting as much as
I can on the side of my other pursuits, but beginning this August, I will begin to primarily freelance
as a visual artist. You can check out my paintings at
juliacost.com.”
Kevin Curran is “still in Palm Springs with constant
commutes to LA and San Diego for work and play.
Currently I am the Technical Director for the City
of Palm Springs, that’s the dude who calls all the
camera shots and lower thirds during the show and
makes sure that it is streaming live and is sent to
broadcast correctly. Also the media coordinator of
La Quinta City. I now have two PBS specials under
my belt for editing and color correction. If you are
in the southern Cali area and like to stay up till 3-4
in the morning you might have seen infomercials
I have worked on. Still going steady with the lady
friend and loving every minute. Game a lot and
probably going to try and move into production
for gaming media as it is now recognized as a sport
which = money = told you so MOM. Fun news, got
casted as THE Alien (wish it was the Alien alien) in an
indie Sci Fi film…to see my lanky body in all its glory
will have to wait, because the movie is still in post.”

Shannon Ellison shares, “For the past
4 years I have been living in Dublin,
Ireland. Ireland is an amazingly beautiful
country and everyone should add it to
their list of places to travel. I, of course,
welcome all visitors! I work as a Montessori teacher and teach a class of 3-5 year
olds. It is totally exhausting but the kid’s
adorable Irish accents make it worth it. I
was lucky enough to visit Maui this past
summer and catch up with some great
Seabury folk. I hope to see many more of
you in the near future.”
Gena Gammie writes, “I’m going on three years
living in Washington, DC, which is a little hard to
believe! I moved here after getting a Masters in
Environmental Policy from the London School of
Economics in 2010 and have been working for an
international environmental NGO called Forest
Trends for a little over 2 years. I manage our Water
Initiative, which focuses on demonstrating the
value of ecosystems for providing clean, secure
water to society and increasing the amount of
investments that go to conservation and restoration. I’ve been lucky to travel a bit to work on our
projects in Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, and China, and I’ve
met some really incredible people along the way.
I’ve seen a few Seaburians over the past few years
but not nearly enough! Any other East Coasters
up for a little reunion?? And if anyone happens to
come through DC, be sure to let me know!”
Lise Hamilton just returned to Canada after a full
year of working in northern Mozambique (about a
day’s drive from the southern border of Tanzania).
“I lived right on the Indian Ocean and was working
with an international development organization
in their research and reporting office. We just
finished a big study on food security and nutrition
in the area and I can now speak Portuguese. In
September, I will begin a Masters of Global Health
in Vancouver and will have a chance to return to
Mozambique in the summer term for my research.”
Matt Hecker writes, “After college I taught English for a year in Korea. Now I’m on my third year as
a teacher for the board of education in Shibukawa
city here in Japan. I also buy, sell and trade Japanese antiques. I hope to eventually come back to
Hawaii someday. The weather, especially in winter,
reminds me how awesome Hawaii is.”
For the past 2 years Katie Kilbride has “been living in beautiful North County San Diego, in a little
town called Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Surrounding myself
with an amazing group of friends, I’ve remained
very active playing soccer, surfing and practicing
yoga. Cardiff has blessed me with an amazing
opportunity to work for GoPro, the world’s most
versatile camera, as a part of their Media Relations
team. I specifically work on surf, snow, adventure
and music categories of the business. My parents
couldn’t be happier that I’m actually using my
Communication Studies degree, earned at the
University of San Diego in 2009. In April, I was lucky
enough
to travel
to the
magical
waterfalls
of Foz do
Iguacu,
Brazil
for the X
Games.
I’m
looking
forward
to where
this path will take me and can’t wait for the next
adventure around the corner! “
Tyler Lausten is living “in my aunt’s motorhome
near Santa Cruz (ok it’s not that bad, its actually
like a 5 star hotel room) for the time being, which
is kinda good because the shop that I have put
together is about 50 feet away. I have been very
busy building waveskis, and just sent one to Israel
and one to Australia. If anyone is passing thru SC
you best be letting me know! But the most exciting
stuff for me right now is that I am starting to work
with www.highfivesfoundation.com to get injured
athletes on the water on a waveski. I recently
spent some time with Grant Korgan on Maui and
watched him rip and got to see what the waveski
can do for someone who has had a seriously traumatic injury (korgmovement.com). I am starting
to feel as though this is the direction I need to go
for business and for my own personal fulfillment. I
have built quite a few boards now and never have
I seen the amount of stoke I saw from Grant catching waves on a waveski. Looking forward to our 10
year (reunion). It’s not that far away!!”

Meryn MacDougall says, “My life hasn’t changed
too much since the last report. I live in Berkeley.
I am still acting but right now I am making the
transition from theatre to film. I recently finished a
short film and a music video and now I am waiting
for the green light on a web series I have been cast
in. I have been seriously missing Maui and can’t
wait for a chance to see you all again. “
Ry Penniman shares, “I graduated with a BA in
anthropology from Northern Arizona Univeristy,
got married and am working for Verizon Wireless.
Have recently been recognized as top salesperson
in the west area. Recently rescued a 2-year old lab/
pit mix and am loving the mountain lifestyle (in
Flagstaff). Look forward to hearing more about all
your amazing lives!”

traveling the world,” says Gemma Sigrithur
Petursdottir. “I recently returned home to colorful Colorado from a 4 1/2 month backpacking trip
around India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.”
Danielle Travis is working as national sales manager for a company called Rapid Release Technology. It’s a high frequency medical device that breaks
up scar tissue for pain relief. Danielle explains, “It’s
a great product and I am stoked to be working
for them. It’s allowed me to travel a bunch, so
that’s cool. After Seabury I lived in Santa Barbara,
Texas, South Carolina, Florida and back to Cali. Just
moved back to Maui like a week ago! Didn’t think I
was gonna move back but I’m happy to be home.
Going to get my real estate license soon. I’m still
riding and playing polo.”
After a year and a half of living in South Carolina,
Katherine Warrick moved back to Maine for
the summer. “I left my job as a financial advisor to
start looking into new and exciting opportunities.
I purchased my first condo this summer down in
Palm Beach Gardens, FL and plan on flipping it in
the fall!! I’m really excited about the new project
and the possibilities of a new career that will allow
me to unleash my creative side that has been in
hibernation. Just enjoying Maine for the summer
right now and excited for the future. “

Summer Street Fest
Thank you to all who attended!
O
ur annual summer reunion
took the shape of a
giant block party this past
June, sending alumni to the
“streets” in search of fun,
laughter, and some delicious
tastings from a handful of
Maui food trucks. The Cooper
House parking lot was transformed with
glowing lanterns and twinkling lights,
though nothing compared to the smiles
of over 150 people, who came together
to share stories and reconnect. Partygoers milled about eating, toasting, and
enjoying a Maui sunset that was nothing
short of completely epic. The night air
carried the bongo beats and lively Latin
grooves of the 7-piece Dr.Nat & Rio Ritmo
band—many succumbed to the music
and danced barefoot on the grass. A
highlight of the evening was watching
Zak Wass ’03, who flew in from Boston,
take the stage to jam with his former Rio
Ritmo band mates.
The Class of 1993 had a great turn
out with over a quarter of the class
participating, some like Elton Juter and
Nikki Stubbs Broyard came all the way
from the East Coast to attend. Even the
holdouts of 2003, (ahem, Joe McFarlin
and Jared Barros) couldn’t resist the fun
and showed up at the last minute to join
the party. The Class of 1983 may not
have had a big showing but those who
came represented! Melissa Burnett
made the trip from Texas, Courtney
Dahms Pine traveled from Washington
State and Christina (Ehrhardt) and
hubby David Dixon ’80 came in from
California.
