It thrived for decades providing supplies for early gold seekers and as a place where steamboats unloaded their freight, then turned around for more. That cando entrepreneurial spirit built Red Bluff into the modern city it is today. “The county is growing” says Mayor Clay Parker. “I feel the city of Red Bluff has that hometown feel.” WE ARE A PLACE WITH DIRECTION T he Red Bluff -Tehama County Chamber of Commerce is the engine that never stops. Stay in Tehama County for any length of time and you will find that people are our best assets, whether they recommend their favorite fishing spot, check in on a neighbor or bring cookies to your door. “It’s the community” said Bill Goodwin, Tehama County Administrator. “Parents watch out for each other’s kids. As a fifth generation Growney in Red Bluff, he still gets a kick driving downtown honking and waving to folks he knows. Growney motors past buildings and sidewalks where his great-great grandfather and great-great uncle placed bricks that built and paved downtown Red Bluff. “I have a lot of pride for Red Bluff” he says. Growney is a familiar name in the community. His brother Mike runs Growney Motors, founded by their grandfather in 1922. John owns and operates Growney Brothers Rodeo Company which supplies bucking horses and bulls for rodeos. He is wellknown locally, nationally and internationally in the rodeo industry for his expertise with stock animals. He takes pride in animal health practices and solid breeding programs. Growney Brothers is credited with providing more horses and bulls to the National Finals Rodeo than any other rodeo company in the west. He was nominated 10 times for the Stock Contractor of the Year and awarded the title in 2000. “It was quite a life” Growney said. “I am in the rodeo business. I get to travel. I’m a people person.” Growney loves what he does and has built longtime relationships in the rodeo industry. He is on the road for months at a time from May to September, but returns for five months each year from October through April to rest his livestock. Red Bluff is a place he can relax and call home. “In Red Bluff, I’m just John Growney” he says. “It makes it nice to go home and be myself.” Growney stays involved in the community when he can, but not as much as he would like. With a strong heritage and family stake in the community, he says a lot is expected of him, a responsibility that comes naturally. He is a member of the Elks, Rotary, Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce and promotes and furnishes livestock for the Round-Up Rodeo, one of the largest events in Tehama County. Growney has watched Red Bluff change and grow through the years. It has a lot of plusses. If you want work, there is plenty to go around between employers such as milling, the trucking industry and Walmart Distribution Center, Growney said. Red Bluff and Tehama County is a sportsman’s paradise. It has a strong Chamber of Commerce, he said. “We are so blessed to have Dave Gowan as our Chamber leader” Growney said. “He’s always trying to make Red Bluff a better place. He is our cheerleader. We are a great people and place.” 2016 MEMBER DIRECTORY and VISITOR GUIDE 5 Community POPULATION R ed Bluff, population 14,104, is the largest city and county seat in Tehama County, population of 63,067. Known as the “Victorian City on the River” Red Bluff is also the third largest city in northern California’s Shasta Cascades region. Known for pristine lakes, world-class rivers, scenic drives and breath-taking views, Tehama County is renowned for its outdoor recreation. Tehama County weaves business and community spirit into the fabric of daily life. Rich in history, steeped in industry and western heritage and agriculture, it’s a place that continues to prosper and grow. LOCATION F rom its sparkling waterways to breath-taking vistas, adventurous spirits can enjoy the great outdoors in Red Bluff and Tehama County. Some play while others work the land. Centrally located on the Sacramento River in Northern California, Red Bluff is 120 miles north of Sacramento on Interstate 5, 190 miles west of Reno/ Tahoe and 155 miles south of the Oregon border. Breathe in snow-capped views of Shasta Mountain to the north and Lassen Volcanic National Park to the east. Tehama County is a call to recreation whether it’s hiking, camping, golfing, hunting, fishing or visiting wine country. Red Bluff, the “Gateway to Lassen Volcanic National Park” promises inspiration. CLIMATE I f you like snow, you won’t find it here in Tehama County. If you like short sleeve weather, this is the place. Summers get hot in the 90s and above, perfect for a splash-down in the area’s pools, grand lakes and rivers or a drive to the high country in Lassen Volcanic National Park. Winter temps hover around 40 and the rest of the year is “oh so nice,” excellent for all the outdoor fun you can handle. Spring and fall cools to the 50’s and 60s, just right to wet a fishing line or take a tour through our glorious wine country. Tehama County knows how to enjoy life all year long, no matter with the season. HOUSING , COMMUNITY CENTER R ed Bluff Community Center at 1500 S. Jackson Street has been a hub in Tehama County since opening its doors in 1990. It’s where seniors can line dance, businesses conduct meetings and families toast new brides. Red Bluff Community Center’s versatility is what keeps people coming, says Chris Hurton, community center supervisor. Jointly run by Tehama County and the city of Red Bluff, the community center serves a dual purpose by providing activities and services for seniors as well as for the entire community. It’s part convention center, senior center, recreation center and event space. “The county and city work closely to make its operation a success and provide services to the community” says Hurton. “It really is a diverse-use facility.” Hurton is proud of the community center where he played basketball and took wood carving classes as a youth, then later married there. Like Hurton, many in Tehama County have a personal connection to the Red Bluff Community Center. It’s a popular destination for weddings, as well as anniversary parties, prom and birthday celebrations. In 2014 more than 800 people viewed the Giant’s 2014 World Series Championship traveling trophy. Others come to network at events like the Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce BEAM (Business Expo and Mixer) or feast on pasta and music at the Notes and Noodles high school fundraiser. It’s the go-to place for seniors who want to remain active and engaged, says Juanita Rajanen, senior nutrition coordinator with the Community Action Agency at the Center. Rajanen’s program feeds more than 100 seniors weekdays at the community center or in their homes. They stay for bingo, classes and to make new friends. “For seniors, it gives them a place to go and someplace to socialize. It’s the place to be” she says. The story of Red Bluff begins eight years before the community came into existence because there is a prologue of the famous Peter Lassen whose name was given to a county, a national park, a volcano and a highway. Red Bluff became the marketing and distribution center for a large area and its scope in that role widened steadily. By 1853 it was the chief commercial city in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley, and its streets continually thronged with pack trains operating to and from points as far away as Oregon, Nevada and Idaho. Out and About Photo by Matt Cohen WELCOME TO ROUND-UP ROUND-UP HISTORY T he Red Bluff Round-Up Association founded and hosted its first Round-Up in 1921 with 17 events at the Tehama County Fair. Though 7,000 people attended the inaugural event, the rodeo did not profit financially, nor the next year. In 1926 the Red Bluff Round-Up Association reorganized and hosted a two-day spring show. Aggressive marketing by ad man Don Tait drew 10,000 attendees to the 1926 rodeo, contributing to its success. In 1928 the Rodeo Committee developed its own advertising campaign with a caravan of 50 cars which rumbled through Red Bluff, Corning, Orland, Willows, Hamilton City and Chico. In the first caravan a siren blasted from the undersheriff’s lead vehicle, a saddle hitched to its hood. From the “hurricane deck” a spokesman called out announcements through his megaphone. The promotional caravan continued through the 1960s. The Round-Up was canceled in 1933 due to the Great Depression and from 1942-1945 during World War II, but continues today as one of the longest traditions in Tehama County. 95TH ANNUAL RED BLUFF ROUND-UP RODEO 2016 S addle up for the 95th Annual Red Bluff Round-Up Rodeo at the Tehama District Fairgrounds from April 15-17, 2016. The Round-Up means 11 days of fun-filled events throughout Tehama County. The celebration includes entertaining activities such as a bowling tournament, foot race, pancake breakfast, street dance, antique shows, Chamber of Commerce mixer, golf tournament, chili cook-off, parade and screenings of Western films. 20 Red Bluff-Tehama County | CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Round-Up rodeo offers thrilling competitions – bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie down roping, team roping, steer wrestling and womens barrel racing. Joe Baumgartner, bullfighter and inductee in the Pro-Rodeo Hall of Fame, became a local celebrity when he donned baggy shorts and a jersey to protect bull riders at the Round-Up for more than a decade. “It was the greatest rodeo in the world that weekend” Baumgartner, retired, said. Round-Up draws approximately 600 contestants nationally and internationally each year, ranking it 17th out of 700 rodeos across the country in contestants and prize money. More than 28,000 spectators attend the three-day rodeo and countless others participate in associated events and activities. The world-class rodeo is big business for the community, bringing in more than $4 million to Red Bluff and Tehama County, filling hotels, restaurants, retailers, gas stations and many other local businesses. The community is exceptionally supportive at Round-Up, says James Miller, general manager of The Red Bluff Round-Up Association. Businesses show spirit as they compete for the best-painted store front window with eye-catching scenes of cowboys and western lifestyles. Round-Up is definitely the largest event in northern California, Miller says. Generations of families are season ticket-holders who claim their seats year after year. “It’s unbelievable – a group of people putting this on for 94 years now” Miller said. “It’s huge to the community. All the businesses get behind it.” The Red Bluff Round-Up was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2015. We are one of 24 rodeos to be inducted into the Hall of Fame out of 800 rodeos.
