Gowan,
What is the Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber?
CEO
We have a mission statement, but how does the Chamber play out in day to day life? We are a
membership based organization here to promote business, tourism, organizations and events to strengthen our local
economy.
Practically speaking, have you been to a Red Bluff parade? “That’s the Chamber.” How about one of the Wednesday
or Saturday Farmer’s Market? “That’s the Chamber.” We promote our 400 plus members and our community through our
website, Facebook, Friday eBLAST, newsletter and Twitter. “That’s the Chamber.” Have you seen the big scissors at a Ribbon
Cutting celebration? “That’s the Chamber.” Have you been to our B.E.A.M. Business Expo? “That’s the Chamber.”
We promote events large and small from the 11 Days of Round-Up to the Kelly Griggs Summer Ice Cream Social, the
Crawdad Festival, Monster Trucks, Beef and Brew and Art Walk. The list goes on and on.
Twelve thousand plus vehicles daily see our Electronic Messaging Center in front of the office informing the public and
tourists of great organizations and events. “That’s the Chamber.”
Some of the blue “visitor information” signs from around the County and City lead visitors to us – we eat and breathe
tourism on a daily basis! We have maps, brochures and directions to promote great local establishments such as restaurants,
shops, hotels/motels and various tourist stops in town and throughout the county. We supply relocation packets and assist
families and groups with information for their visits to our area.
Have you seen a “Friday eBLAST” of current happenings and specials or been to our Good Morning, Red Bluff networking
event? You’ve guessed it, it’s the Chamber. We partner with the City, County, the Downtown Business Association, the Fairgrounds,
the Bull and Gelding Sale and so many more amazing groups to see further success in Red Bluff and Tehama County.

WE ARE A PLACE OF ASPIRATIONS AND HAVE BEEN
SINCE OUR BEGINNING
R
ed Bluff, known as “The Victorian City on the
River” for its style of homes from the 1860s
to the early 1900s, was founded in 1850 as a
commercial city in the northern Sacramento
Valley. It thrived for decades providing supplies for
early gold seekers and as a place where steamboats
unloaded their freight, then turned around for more. That cando entrepreneurial spirit built Red Bluff into the modern city it is
today.
“The county is growing” says Mayor Clay Parker. “I feel the
city of Red Bluff has that hometown feel.”
WE ARE A PLACE WITH DIRECTION
T
he Red Bluff -Tehama County Chamber of Commerce
is the engine that never stops. The Chamber has
served Red Bluff and Tehama County since 1895
and continues to strengthen and promote the
city and county as a whole. With more than 410 members
and growing, the Chamber supports local businesses,
organizations, professionals and education and tourism.
It stages grand openings, hosts networking meetings,
organizes parades, prints brochures and promotes countless
major events through the year to stimulate growth in the
community. Visit www.redbluffchamber.com for a complete

WE ARE A PLACE OF DIVERSITY
T
ehama County is rich in diversity with all segments of the work
force from small mom and pop shops, mid-level companies
to 1,300 employees at Walmart Distribution Center in Red
Bluff. Artists to olive growers and ranchers to health care
providers live and work side by side in Tehama County.
WE ARE A PLACE CONNECTED
D
on’t be surprised when a local resident smiles at you
and asks you how it’s going. Friendliness is one of our
strongest traits. It’s what visitors tell him all the time,
says Dave Gowan, CEO of the Red Bluff-Tehama County
Chamber of Commerce. Stay in Tehama County for any length of
time and you will find that people are our best assets, whether they
recommend their favorite fishing spot, check in on a neighbor or
bring cookies to your door.
“It’s the community” said Bill Goodwin, Tehama County
Administrator. “Parents watch out for each other’s kids. There is still
that community spirit for caring for each other.”
WE ARE A PLACE OF OPPORTUNITY
T
ehama County is rich in agriculture from olives, almonds,
walnuts, plums to dairy, as well as timber production and
manufacturing. It’s an outdoor space for everyone to enjoy.
With lush meadows, scenic foothills and snow-capped
peaks, Tehama County offers an endless recreational to-do list.
“It’s a great family community” says Dave Gowan, chief
executive officer of Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of
Commerce. “The weather is awesome. Employment is rising.
We have a strong downtown area. It provides a variety of services for the community as well as for visitors.”

RED BLUFF IS HOME TO LOCAL
CELEB JOHN GROWNEY
J
ohn Growney has deep roots in Tehama County.
As a fifth generation Growney in Red Bluff, he still gets a kick driving downtown honking and waving to folks he knows.
Growney motors past buildings and sidewalks where his great-great grandfather and great-great uncle placed bricks that
built and paved downtown Red Bluff.
“I have a lot of pride for Red Bluff” he says.
Growney is a familiar name in the community. His brother Mike runs Growney Motors, founded by their grandfather in 1922.
John owns and operates Growney Brothers Rodeo Company which supplies bucking horses and bulls for rodeos. He is wellknown locally, nationally and internationally in the rodeo industry for his expertise with stock animals. He takes pride in animal
health practices and solid breeding programs. Growney Brothers is credited with providing more horses and bulls to the
National Finals Rodeo than any other rodeo company in the west. He was nominated 10 times for the Stock Contractor of the
Year and awarded the title in 2000.
“It was quite a life” Growney said. “I am in the rodeo business. I get to travel. I’m a people person.”
Growney loves what he does and has built longtime relationships in the rodeo industry. He is on the road for months at a
time from May to September, but returns for five months each year from October through April to rest his livestock. Red Bluff is
a place he can relax and call home.
“In Red Bluff, I’m just John Growney” he says. “It makes it nice to go home and be myself.”
Growney stays involved in the community when he can, but not as much as he would like. With a strong heritage and family
stake in the community, he says a lot is expected of him, a responsibility that comes naturally. He is a member of the Elks, Rotary,
Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce and promotes and furnishes livestock for the Round-Up Rodeo, one of the
largest events in Tehama County. Growney has watched Red Bluff change and grow through the years. It has a lot of plusses. If you
want work, there is plenty to go around between employers such as milling, the trucking industry and Walmart Distribution Center,
Growney said. Red Bluff and Tehama County is a sportsman’s paradise. It has a strong Chamber of Commerce, he said.
“We are so blessed to have Dave Gowan as our Chamber leader” Growney said. “He’s always trying to make Red Bluff a
better place. He is our cheerleader. We are a great people and place.”

Community
POPULATION
R
ed Bluff, population 14,104, is the largest city and
county seat in Tehama County, population of 63,067.
Known as the “Victorian City on the River” Red Bluff
is also the third largest city in northern California’s Shasta
Cascades region. Known for pristine lakes, world-class rivers, scenic drives and breath-taking views, Tehama County
is renowned for its outdoor recreation. Tehama County
weaves business and community spirit into the fabric of
daily life. Rich in history, steeped in industry and western
heritage and agriculture, it’s a place that continues to
prosper and grow.
LOCATION
F
rom its sparkling waterways to breath-taking vistas,
adventurous spirits can enjoy the great outdoors in
Red Bluff and Tehama County. Some play while others work the land. Centrally located on the Sacramento
River in Northern California, Red Bluff is 120 miles north
of Sacramento on Interstate 5, 190 miles west of Reno/
Tahoe and 155 miles south of the Oregon border. Breathe
in snow-capped views of Shasta Mountain to the north
and Lassen Volcanic National Park to the east. Tehama
County is a call to recreation whether it’s hiking, camping, golfing, hunting, fishing or visiting wine country. Red
Bluff, the “Gateway to Lassen Volcanic National Park”
promises inspiration.
CLIMATE
I
f you like snow, you won’t find it here in Tehama
County. If you like short sleeve weather, this is the
place. Summers get hot in the 90s and above, perfect
for a splash-down in the area’s pools, grand lakes and
rivers or a drive to the high country in Lassen Volcanic
National Park. Winter temps hover around 40 and the
rest of the year is “oh so nice,” excellent for all the
outdoor fun you can handle. Spring and fall cools to
the 50’s and 60s, just right to wet a fishing line or take a
tour through our glorious wine country. Tehama County
knows how to enjoy life all year long, no matter with
the season.
HOUSING ,
COMMUNITY CENTER
R
ed Bluff Community Center at 1500 S. Jackson
Street has been a hub in Tehama County since
opening its doors in 1990. It’s where seniors can
line dance, businesses conduct meetings and families
toast new brides.
Red Bluff Community Center’s versatility is what keeps
people coming, says Chris Hurton, community center
supervisor. Jointly run by Tehama County and the
city of Red Bluff, the community center serves a dual
purpose by providing activities and services for seniors
as well as for the entire community. It’s part convention center, senior center, recreation center and event
space.
“The county and city work closely to make its operation
a success and provide services to the community” says
Hurton. “It really is a diverse-use facility.”
Hurton is proud of the community center where he
played basketball and took wood carving classes as
a youth, then later married there. Like Hurton, many
in Tehama County have a personal connection to the
Red Bluff Community Center. It’s a popular destination
for weddings, as well as anniversary parties, prom and
birthday celebrations. In 2014 more than 800 people
viewed the Giant’s 2014 World Series Championship
traveling trophy. Others come to network at events like
the Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce
BEAM (Business Expo and Mixer) or feast on pasta and
music at the Notes and Noodles high school fundraiser.
It’s the go-to place for seniors who want to remain active and engaged, says Juanita Rajanen, senior nutrition coordinator with the Community Action Agency
at the Center. Rajanen’s program feeds more than 100
seniors weekdays at the community center or in their
homes. They stay for bingo, classes and to make new
friends.
“For seniors, it gives them a place to go and someplace
to socialize. It’s the place to be” she says.

A
lthough never a mining camp, Red Bluff ranks with
the celebrated towns of the gold rush days in age,
exciting history, colorful personalities and in present
day importance.
The story of Red Bluff begins eight years before the
community came into existence because there is a
prologue of the famous Peter Lassen whose name was
given to a county, a national park, a volcano and a
highway. Red Bluff became the marketing and distribution center for a large area and its scope in that role
widened steadily. By 1853 it was the chief commercial
city in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley, and
its streets continually thronged with pack trains operating to and from points as far away as Oregon, Nevada
and Idaho.

xplore Historic Downtown Red Bluff with its
charming Victorian architecture, tree-lined
streets, quaint stores, eclectic restaurants and
more than 150 businesses, all within blocks of the
beautiful Sacramento River. Downtown Red Bluff is
the scene for Chamber seasonal farmers market’s
running June through September, Art & Wine
Walk, Community Art Studio, Red Bluff State Theatre and the Kelly Griggs House Museum. Take a
“selfie” next to the 75-foot Cone & Kimball Clock
Tower at Main and Walnut Streets, a replica of the
majestic 100-foot tower that crowned the Cone &
Kimball building for nearly a century. Downtown
Red Bluff has something for everyone.
“Downtown is our connection to a successful past
and is moving into a more successful future,” said
President of the Downtown Red Bluff Business Association Ivan Petrzelka. “Red Bluff is a destination.”

R
enovations to the historic 1930’s State Theatre for the
Arts at 333 Oak Street in Red Bluff have rekindled Downtown excitement. Entertainers such as Judy Collins,
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Merle Haggard have performed
at the State in addition to countless local performers. State
Theatre’s calendar fills with children’s performances, movies,
comedy shows, theatrical performances, big bands, speakers,
private parties and more year around.
“The community has rallied to make it possible to restore the State back to its better-than-original condition,”
said Joe Vine, president of the board of State Theatre.

WELCOME TO ROUND-UP
ROUND-UP HISTORY
T
he Red Bluff Round-Up Association founded and hosted
its first Round-Up in 1921 with 17 events at the Tehama
County Fair. Though 7,000 people attended the inaugural event, the rodeo did not profit financially, nor the next
year. In 1926 the Red Bluff Round-Up Association reorganized
and hosted a two-day spring show. Aggressive marketing by
ad man Don Tait drew 10,000 attendees to the 1926 rodeo,
contributing to its success.
In 1928 the Rodeo Committee developed its own advertising campaign with a caravan of 50 cars which rumbled
through Red Bluff, Corning, Orland, Willows, Hamilton City
and Chico. In the first caravan a siren blasted from the undersheriff’s lead vehicle, a saddle hitched to its hood. From
the “hurricane deck” a spokesman called out announcements through his megaphone. The promotional caravan
continued through the 1960s. The Round-Up was canceled
in 1933 due to the Great Depression and from 1942-1945
during World War II, but continues today as one of the longest traditions in Tehama County.
95TH ANNUAL RED BLUFF
ROUND-UP RODEO 2016
S
addle up for the 95th Annual Red Bluff Round-Up
Rodeo at the Tehama District Fairgrounds from
April 15-17, 2016. The Round-Up means 11 days
of fun-filled events throughout Tehama County. The
celebration includes entertaining activities such as a
bowling tournament, foot race, pancake breakfast, street
dance, antique shows, Chamber of Commerce mixer,
golf tournament, chili cook-off, parade and screenings of
Western films.

Round-Up rodeo offers thrilling competitions – bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie down roping,
team roping, steer wrestling and womens barrel racing. Joe
Baumgartner, bullfighter and inductee in the Pro-Rodeo
Hall of Fame, became a local celebrity when he donned
baggy shorts and a jersey to protect bull riders at the
Round-Up for more than a decade.
“It was the greatest rodeo in the world that weekend”
Baumgartner, retired, said.
Round-Up draws approximately 600 contestants nationally and internationally each year, ranking it 17th out of 700
rodeos across the country in contestants and prize money.
More than 28,000 spectators attend the three-day rodeo
and countless others participate in associated events and
activities. The world-class rodeo is big business for the
community, bringing in more than $4 million to Red Bluff
and Tehama County, filling hotels, restaurants, retailers, gas
stations and many other local businesses. The community
is exceptionally supportive at Round-Up, says James Miller,
general manager of The Red Bluff Round-Up Association.
Businesses show spirit as they compete for the best-painted
store front window with eye-catching scenes of cowboys and
western lifestyles. Round-Up is definitely the largest event in
northern California, Miller says. Generations of families are
season ticket-holders who claim their seats year after year.
“It’s unbelievable – a group of people putting this on for 94
years now” Miller said. “It’s huge to the community. All the businesses get behind it.”
The Red Bluff Round-Up was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall
of Fame in 2015. We are one of 24 rodeos to be inducted into
the Hall of Fame out of 800 rodeos.

teamers in the 1800s pushed north on the Sacramento River from San Francisco to deliver supplies
to Red Bluff. From there pack trains hauled freight to
and from Oregon, Nevada and Idaho. Red Bluff thrived
commercially for more than a century as head of navigation on the Sacramento River and continued to grow,
expand and diversify to become the industrious city it is
today.
Settlers found fertile land in Tehama County. Located
in the northern Sacramento Valley, the climate and soil
proved ideal for products such as pecans, almonds,
walnuts, figs, peaches, apples, oranges, pears, plums,
grapes, olives, timber, cattle, dairy and more. In 2013 the
gross value of Tehama County agriculture production was
$302,271,000, with fruit and nut crops leading overall at
$215,608,600, according to the 2013 Tehama County Crop
Report.
Bell-Carter Foods, one of the largest olive producers
in the country, is located in Corning, “The Olive City”
along with many other award-winning olive and olive oil
producers there. Visit Olive tasting rooms including one
at Lucero Olive Oil in Corning. Walnut orchards and
produce stands line “Tehama Trail’s” Highway 99 and
vineyard after vineyard dot the landscape in Manton off
Highway 36. Kathy Sarmiento, CEO with the Job Training
Center in Tehama County, says agriculture is one of the
top three industry sectors that shows signs of the most
growth in Tehama County, along with manufacturing and
distribution, and healthcare. The Job Training Center,
along with Shasta College in Red Bluff educates workers in advanced technologies and managerial skills to fill
these thriving industries.
“Those are the three segments where there is the most
potential” Sarmiento said. “We are really invested in this
community in helping it grow and prosper, making sure
we have an educated, skilled work force.”
The Walmart Distribution Center is the largest employer in Tehama County with 1,350 employees. Other

major employers in Tehama County include Sierra Pacific
Industries, Rolling Hills Casino, Louisiana-Pacific Corporation, Lucero Olive Oil, St. Elizabeth Community Hospital, Pactiv Corporation, Corning Ford, Crane Orchards,
Eco-Shell, Maywood Farms, Haleakala Ranch and Red
Bluff Dodge. Countless businesses associated with tourism such as shopping, dining, lodging, rodeos, antiques,
hunting, fishing and golfing continue to grow and expand
in Tehama County.
“It is very diverse” said Dave Gowan, CEO of the Red
Bluff-Tehama Chamber of Commerce. “We have all segments of the work force from small mom and pop shops
to 1,300 employees at the Walmart Distribution Center.”

ABOUT THE CHAMBER
I
f you aren’t a member of the Red Bluff-Tehama County
Chamber of Commerce, consider yourself invited!
There are plenty of reasons to get involved. With more
than 410 members, the Chamber of Commerce champions
business, tourism and local happenings. The Chamber
coordinates efforts and promotes the Downtown Red
Bluff Business Association, Tehama District Fairgrounds
and nearly 90 nonprofit groups such as the Tehama Cattlewoman’s Association, Red Bluff State Theatre and the
Round-Up Association. We host Candidate Nights to give
the community an opportunity to meet and become knowledgeable on local candidates and issues. We hold BEAM,
Business Expo and Mixer each February to provide business to business, as well as business to the general public
to promote business organizations in the local community.
At our annual banquet each September we give awards
for business of the year, beautification, leadership, spirit,
director of the year, person of the year and ambassador of
the year.
“It’s a close knit community” said Dave Gowan, CEO.
“We see that through our networking events. They draw
strength and encouragement from one another. It motivates them in their area of expertise.”
To boost tourism the Chamber annually distributes 750
local maps, 1,500 recreation guides, 600 relocation packets,
over 6,000 yearly event calendars and countless types of
information ranging from housing, employment, schools,
and city and county demographics to telephone books and
voter registration forms.

Red Bluff-Tehama County | CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
In 2014 the Chamber headquarters at 100 Main Street
in Red Bluff saw a significant increase in activity from new
members, local residents and out of town visitors. It handles
around 1,950 telephone calls and email requests monthly
and greets and serves an average of 55 walk-in visitors per
day, totaling 1,100 per month and 13,200 each year.
We work with countless organizations to attract more
than 110,000 spectators to Red Bluff during the course
of the year. Visitors spend more than $110 million in the
county, according to the California Travel and Tourism
Commission, impacting the city’s and county’s sales and
gasoline tax and revenues.
The Chamber sponsors monthly “Good Morning, Red
Bluff “networking meetings as well as an evening networking event at local businesses, “Business After Hours” and
ongoing business classes. We introduce new businesses
to the community with grand-opening and ribbon-cutting
ceremonies, giving all businesses the opportunity to shine
in the Chamber Report newsletter, Chamber website, Facebook, Twitter and electronic messaging center.
If you haven’t been to the Chamber’s website, check us
out at www.redbluffchamber.com. It’s a wealth of resources.
Our website has over 5,000 hits per month. Our software,
Chamber Master, provides the greatest online service for
members and visitors alike.
“The Chamber fills a role in the vitality of the community
giving them the business support they need,” said Kathy
Sarmiento, Chamber partner and CEO of the Job Training
Center in Tehama County.
