ST. MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH Faith, Love, Community, Service ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ FiŌh Sunday in Ordinary Time February 8, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Monsignor John Talesfore, Pastor One Notre Dame Avenue San Mateo, CA 94402 (650) 344-7622 Phone (650) 344-4830 Fax www.stmatthew-parish.org MASSES/MISAS Daily Masses/Misas Diarias: 6:30am (except Saturday), 12:05pm Saturday/Sábado: 5:00pm, 7:00pm (Español) Sunday/Domingo: 7:00am, 8:45am (Español), 10:45am, 12:30pm, 3:00pm (Chinese in the small Chapel), 5:30pm (Español) Confession/Confesiones: Monday-Friday Lunes a Viernes 5:00pm-5:30pm in the Chapel Saturday/Sábado 11:30am-12:00noon & 4:30pm-5:00pm My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, ….”and she waited on them.” Throughout this year, we will be proclaiming the Gospel of St. Mark at the Sunday Masses. Expect to be caught up in St. Mark’s fast pace and get into the action. Today’s invitation to become a volunteer for our upcoming Carnival on April 18th and 19th is a perfect opportunity to do so! Yes, it is quite a fast pace in St. Mark’s Gospel, the shortest of the four Gospels. The words straightway and immediately occur over forty times in the sixteen chapters of Mark and add to that pace and action. The Gospel of Mark shows Jesus as a person of action and power and contains more accounts of miracles than any of the other Gospels. But in addition to the divine and powerful side of Jesus, this Gospel shows Jesus’ human side. Mark mentioned more times than any other Gospel writer that Jesus took time to be alone and to rest. Today’s Gospel is a perfect example of those two dynamics – prayer and action, reminding us that Jesus’ fast pace and energy flowed from a refreshing, life giving relationship with the Father, nurtured and maintained in prayer. (“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.”) (Continued on page 2) St. Matthew Catholic Church 2 February 8, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo, (cont’d) And from that regular pattern of prayer flows Jesus’ fast paced response to the needs of those around him, as we see in his response to Simon Peter’s ailing mother-in-law. (“They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.”) Isn’t it interesting how quickly St. Peter’s mother-inlaw gets into the action herself? (“Then the fever left her and she waited on them.”) That’s just how Jesus works or should work in our lives if we accept his graceful presence and action. We also get into action and serve as he has served us. So pray about it and get into action. Come for just a few minutes to the Parish Volunteer event on February 11 in Ward Hall anytime between 7:309:30. Questions? Call Kathryn Cross at 650-3447622 x104. Msgr. John Talesfore, Pastor ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time way of life. Developing an ongoing, "Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. There are scores of instances in the Four Gospels which indicate Jesus praying. He would often go alone to pray, but he also prayed with others publicly; before He made a choice, before He healed someone, and He was a likely to pray after as well. St. Paul exhorts us to "pray constantly, never ceasing." Jesus perhaps more than any other fulfilled this admonition. He provides to us the perfect example of both how we should pray and in what ways. Prayer is at the foundation of our faith; it is at the core of a stewardship consistent, and active prayer life is paramount for each of us. Prayer not only indicates our constant awareness of god, but it enhances our lives, and is an indication of our total trust in God. Trust in God is also an important facet of Stewardship. Knowing that we are in God's hands and in His care is what strengthens us and allows us to make the commitment Jesus asked us to make. One of Jesus' final prayers is one which offers us the suggestion of how we need to approach life: "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." Reprinted with permission from the 2015 Catholic Stewardship Consultants ….”y se puso a servirles.” ¿Preguntas? This Lent, Jesus is asking us – listen carefully and you can hear him – to step out of the boat in our lives and trust His Way. Beginning the week of February 16th, we will be gathering in small faith sharing groups for Lent. All that is asked of us is to have faith in God’s love for us and a spirit of community and humble ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ A Prayer to Ask God for Rain Oh God, in Whom we live, move and have our being, grant us sufficient rain, so that, being supplied with what sustains us in this present life, we may seek more confidently what sustains us for eternity.
