CORNER

What a summer we had! Our circus was
dampened by some rainy weather in Eastern
Idaho, but we managed to get through all
performances. Many Picnics and Parades
were attended and had some great times
with our members.
Then off to the Imperial Session in
Minneapolis with Lady Ellie, Joe and Lady
Norma Randall, Corey Turner, Gene and
Lady Caryn Strate, Illustrious Sir Gary Adams and Lady Joyce, and Illustrious Sir Jay Leonard
and Lady Jean. The Session was informative and I will update the Nobility at the September
meeting.
After returning from Imperial, our attention turned to the PNSA Convention for some last
minute planning and getting things ready for our big weekend. But first we had the East West
Shrine Football Game in Baker. The Parade Saturday morning was well attended and we were
represented by our International award winning Tin Lizzies, Sand Duners, Klassy Car Club,
Cameleers, and the Black Light Patrol.
The Imperial Potentate, Imperial Sir Dale Stauss and Lady Cheryl were also in attendance. When the Temples took the field for the opening ceremonies, I was extremely proud
of our Temple. We had 14 Nobles on the field representing El Korah. It was great to have the
support of everyone there.
Then the Convention, under the design and supervision of Illustrious Sir Chuck Turner,
Lady Kathy and Illustrious Sir Dick McFarland and Lady Regie, What can I say except Job
well done !!! We had Imperial Sir Dale Stauss and Lady Cheryl and Imperial Sir Jim Cain and
Lady Patsy in attendance. The tours, the competitions, the evening events at the Temple, the
parade and the barbeque, the ladies Luncheon, the Presidents Banquet were all well attended.
A Quote from Imperial Sir Dale, ”anyone that didn’t have a good time here needs to look
in the mirror”. I’m still getting E-Mails from individuals congratulating the Nobles and Ladies of
El Korah for a great convention. Lady Ellie and I personally want to thank everyone who registered, volunteered and worked so hard to make this the success it was. We couldn’t have
done this without your support and willingness to be part of this major undertaking. You should
all be very proud of what you accomplished.
A Big thanks to Mike Ross for putting Go-Pro Cameras on the motorized units and editing the pictures and videos for the Banquet Saturday night. We even had some of our people
taking Hula Lessons on the dance floor. We won’t be showing that video anytime soon.
Now we look ahead and start planning our Fall Ceremonial .We plan to also celebrate our
100th Year in our Temple at the Ceremonial. More information will be forth coming.
Look forward to seeing you at our Nobility Night on September 5th. Also come down to the
Oasis for lunch and try our new menu, the soups are homemade and everything is fresh and
made in house, from salad dressings to finger steaks. I think you will enjoy the new items on
the menu.

what lies before us. It is
time for us to return to our
Lodges and help prepare our candidates
for their degree work. Our symposium and ceremonial are scheduled for November.
Let us all support our Potentate and Divan to insure that we have Brothers prepared
for our fall 2014 Ceremonial Class.
To get us ready for the fall activities, we
should try to attend and support Air Force
Appreciation Day, Saturday, September 6. The
Elmore Shrine Club is striving to make it a day
in which we are all proud to support Mountain
Home Air Force Base, and our Country. If you
can attend just let Johnny Willis know of your
plans for the day.

A Whole Hearted Thanks to all Committee Members and Nobles and Ladies of
El Korah Temple that helped with Registration and Hospitality tables, Transportation,
Competition events and Parade or any other help you provided. And especially to all
Nobles and Ladies of El Korah that registered and made PNSA 2014 a success.
What a great event! We have received wonderful comments from everyone on how
great El Korah did to provide a memorable Convention. I was told that it would be one
“they would always remember.”
With a special thanks to my good Friends Illustrious Sir Dick McFarland and his Lady
Regie, and my wife Lady Kathy for putting this all together. Without what they did it would
never have happened.
To Illustrious Sir Mike Mastropaolo and Lady Ellie, now that it is over, Thanks for asking me to be Director General, a love-hate position but very rewarding.

Our temple will reopen in September with meetings, sew
ing sessions, and practices for the upcoming visit from our new
Supreme Queen. Plan to wear your favorite apron (or that

September 18, 2014.
Mark your calendar for the Nile fundraiser Fashion Show.
It will be held November 8, 2014, at El Korah Temple. The
doors will open at 11:00 for the Social Hour which will begin at 11:30, with luncheon to be served at 12:15. Tickets

Hi Everyone! Hay just a quick reminder to everyone that we are fast approaching The
Sand Duners Screening Clinic coming up on the first weekend in October. Yes, This
time around the Clinic will be held on the 4th of October as usual it will be held at the
ISU Campus 1311 E Central Dr. in Meridian from 9 AM until 1PM or as it turned out last
year until everyone there was seen by our Doctors. We had a very successful Clinic last
year and with Robert Sayles the Chairman of the event and Mike Ross his able bodies
assistant and quite possibly next years Chairman. I believe it will be another banner year
for the Screening Clinic. The Screening Clinic as many who have attended would attest is
rated right up there with visiting the Hospital. When you look a father who’s tearing up on
you in the eye and tell them you’ll be submitting their daughter’s paperwork and they don’t
have to worry about the cost. You just can’t help being proud your part of that. You can’t
help being proud that you’re a Shriner! It’s the Kids that we are here for, and we should
do our best for them.

Shriner Ladies Corner
Summer time and
the living is easy…..
However, our Lady Ellie has been very busy traveling across the United States representing all of our El Korah Shrine
ladies. Lady Ellie accompanied Ill. Sir Mike to the 140th Session of
Shriners International in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Lady Ellie and
others toured the Shriners Hospital for Children and had the privilege
to meet the 2014-2015 patient ambassadors.
Every year, two patients are chosen at the national level to represent the successes of all our patients. They travel across the United
States and Canada with their families to tell their stories.
This year Katie Ladlie and Joe Dertinger are our patient ambassadors.
Katie was treated for vascular malformation of the leg. As a teenager Katie was presented with a life changing decision, have surgery
to permanently straighten her leg or an above-the-knee amputation.
Katie chose to amputate. Today she enjoys swimming, Sled hockey,
track and triathlons. Katie has this to say “Shriners Hospital is all about
new beginnings. I should know – they gave me one.”
Joe has been a Shriner Kid since he was 15 months old. Joe
was born with an unusual condition that involved all four of his extremities. Joe underwent surgeries and amputation of his right foot. By
the age of 5 Joe was heavily involved in downhill skiing – and nothing
has stopped him since! Joe graduates from high school this year and
plans to go to college as well as stay involved with Professional skiing
and Prostheses design. Watch for the showing of their DVD “Born to
Inspire”
After Shriners International came the East West Shrine Football
game in Baker, Oregon. Many of our Oregon Shrine Family assist El
Korah with our events and El Korah is proud to be a part of their events
such as football and the Food Caravan to the Portland Hospital. Lady
Ellie could be found greeting at the El Korah Hospitality Room and
cheering on our El Korah participates in the parade.
Then three days later…… El Korah hosted the Pacific Northwest
Shrine Association (PNSA).
Ladies Kathy Turner and Regie
McFarland have been working hard alongside their Nobles Chuck and
Dick for the past four years to organize and schedule a multitude of
fun and interesting events. Thank you for taking on this great challenge. Your planning and organization skills came through with grace
and style. The many wonderful comments by our guest is a testimony
to an enormous job well done.
One of the outstanding events was the Ladies Luncheon.
Kathy and Regie chose coral and lime green for the table colors which
made a striking background for the Bird of Paradise Hawaiian floral arrangements. A lunch of teriyaki chicken and ginger garlic beef /pineapple skewers was served over a bed of rice while we enjoyed entertainment presented by Hula Creations. Hula Creations is a dance studio

that teaches Hawaiian Hula dancing. One production was presented
by small children. How adorable! If you think it is easy, try doing the
hula with braces on your legs! One of the little dancers is a patient at
Shriners Hospital for Children.
We were honored to hear from Imperial First Lady Cheryl Stauss
and view a video of her “Journey of Hope” project.
Thank you! PNSA President’s Lady Ellie Mastropaolo acknowledged the tremendous amount of work it takes to put on such an event
and conveyed a special “thank you from the bottom of my heart” to all
of the many volunteers that helped make the 2014 PNSA a success.
The Market Place proved to be a special place of interest for the
ladies. Hats, dresses, jewelry, chocolate, Shriner pins, shirts and of
course “wine”. Our very own Lady Holly Rufe was serving up samples
of “Cellar 616”.
“Potato Bags” could be purchased just outside the Market Place.
Potato Bag proceeds from PNSA alone was $918!! The Potato Bag
fund is sprouting and starting to grow! Thank you for supporting our
Lady Ellie’s project to raise money for the El Korah Travel Fund.
Many volunteers worked to make a special gift for each of the attendees at the Ladies Luncheon. The Hawaiian fabric angels were
handmade by many volunteers stretching from Hawaii to Washington
State to Idaho. While some made angels others made “horses”!
The PNSA Ladies Outback Degree was a huge success. We were
lead blindfolded across the desert and over the mountains riding our
sometimes “not so tame” stick horses. In spite of stepping in presents
left by some wandering cows and being treated to “rattlesnake” tidbits,
we all had a good time and ended the event by singing “Happy Trails to
You”. Thanks to Pam Thomas and Company (Ladies from the Snake
River and Payette Shrine Clubs) for providing us with a great time plus
a certificate and western scarf to help us remember the event.
So many volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes and at
the Registration or Hospitality Desk. Our Lady Alice Keys worked with
her Noble Mike to photograph and preserve the event on a memento
button. Lady Ellie Flynn was honored at the Presidents Banquet for being an “outstanding volunteer” for El Korah Shrine. She was escorted
to the podium by Ill. Sir Mike Mastropaolo.
Thank you all who came and danced the night away and shared
time with our guests. Your friendship and smiles have left a lasting
impression of the El Korah Shrine in Boise, Idaho.
Oh, by the way….. Don’t forget.
September 5th …..Nobility Nights start up again!
September 11th …The Shrine Ladies Book Club meets Thursday,
September 11th at 1:00 PM in the Oasis. Come early and enjoy
the new menu.
October 11th …. Shrine Ladies Craft afternoon. Watch for more
details to come!

THROUGH THE EYES OF A LADY
“Turn to the left! Now to the right! Oh, hey,
there’s Reuben, over there on the side
walk! Oh, look how cute this little kid is in
the stroller, waving at us…..”
“WATCH OUT!!!! You’re going to fast!! Don’t
get so close to the sidewalk!! HUNNIE,
STEVE, PLEASE keep your eyes on the
road and quit waving at everybody!!!!!”
So went my very first parade, in the
Sidewinder, with my husband, Steve. It
was at the Huckleberry Festival in Donnelly,
Idaho, three years ago, and the “powers
that be” in Shrinedom finally allowed the
Ladies to be in parades with their Nobles.
Yes, we practiced …. But not with a bazillion people on the street, waving and gawking and taking pictures. I was a nervous wreck. And was giddy with excitement when it was all over and couldn’t wait to do it again!
What a blessing it has been that the Ladies are allowed to, not only attend parades, but be
in them as well, alongside our Nobles. I’m sure the other clubs are aware how difficult it
can be to have a full “crew” to make a good showing at an event. I know the Sidewinders
have missed attending parades, or have only sent one jeep, because there were not
enough Nobles to fill the seats. I’m assuming that some of the other clubs have had the
same issues …. What is a Cameleer with only 1 bike rider? Or the Serpentine with empty
seats?
Compliments of...
Yes, we Ladies love to support our Nobles, but it just didn’t seem to be quite enough to
only attend the fancy dinners, or the picnics, or sit in the stands watching the Circus, or
waving from the sidelines of a parade route. I realize there are women’s organizations
within the Shrine, but for some of us more adventurous, we weren’t happy with the sidelines …. We wanted to participate alongside our man … especially when we knew our attendance would mean the difference between them showing up at a parade, and making a
“Shrine presence” or not. It could mean the difference of a child getting the help they need,
by seeing that phone number, or talking to that Shriner.
I guess, as I have just finished attending my 4th parade, and my 3rd Huckleberry Festival
parade, as co-pilot in a Sidewinder, I just wanted to say “thank you” from myself, and the
other ladies. If this is a step that helps encourage others to become more involved in the
Shrine, or gets a needy family to make that call, then “Here, Here!!!!” I’ve had wonderful experiences with my husband, and made great memories because of this wonderful
change that was decided upon.
How’s it going? You might ask. Well, here’s how the Huckleberry Parade just went … “OH
LOOK! There’s Dave! Hey Dave!!! Hey, look at that big dog over there with the sunglasses on! Oh, they have kettle corn … we’re going to have to go get some after the parade.
Smile! That guy over there is taking our picture!.....”

NOMAD NEWS

The Nomads Camping Club has been busy all summer.
We ventured to beautiful Wallowa Lake, near Joseph, Oregon in mid-June. Twenty-three campers enjoyed a quiet week
in the mountains. Peggy Gregory and Kathleen Portello did the planning for the event. New activities included a soup night,
potato bar, and a visit to both a local distillery and a bronze foundry. All activities went well except the fishing was slim. PP
Gary Adams caught the biggest fish. The attached photos by Peggy Gregory capture some of our fun.
El Korah was well represented at the annual Baker City, Oregon East-West Shrine game. The host campground was full
of Shrine campers from throughout the Northwest. Friday morning we enjoyed a great breakfast prepared by the Al Kader
Shriner RV club. It seemed like the entire community turned out to watch the Saturday morning parade as it traveled through
downtown Baker City. Highlight of the weekend was the annual football game featuring the best of Oregon high school football players.
August 21 – 24 marks the Nomads annual trip to Challis for the annual Idaho Masonic picnic which is held at the Challis
Hot Springs RV Park. Twenty rigs are scheduled to make the trek to Challis. Weekend activities include golf, sightseeing, lots
of socializing and fellowship plus some of the best food ever! We are looking forward to enjoying amazing potlucks on Friday
and Saturday evenings plus the annual Idaho Masonic picnic. A special thanks to our weekend hosts and chefs, Gary and
Joyce Adams, Cal and Kathy Ledbetter and Clyde and Dana Schrader.
Next month several Nomad families will travel to Dillon, Montana for the annual Bannack Montana Masonic festivities the
weekend of September 12-14. Weekend hosts will be Don Nelson and Dave Thomas.
Our final camp outing of the year will be in Ketchum the weekend of October 10-12. This is the “Running of the Sheep” event
held every year in Blaine County. This
is a new event for the Nomads. Call
the Meadows RV Park in Ketchum for
reservations if you will be attending.

The 2013 El Korah Shrine Unit of the Year
SAND DUNERS
Greeting from the Sand Duners! The Sand Duners have had a busy
summer. After another successful auction we held a few “Tech Days”
to get ready for parade season! We participated in the Meridian Dairy
Days, Emmett Cherry Festival, Boise Circus Parade, the Independence
Day Celebration in Cascade, Baker City All-Star Game Parade, and
PNSA. There are only a few more parades left for the year, so if you are
a Sand Duner Veteran, come on out and show up the young guys, and if
you aren’t a Duner yet, it is never too late! Even our very own El Korah
Recorder, Tom Eason, got out and rode.
Our next parade will be the Mountain Home Armed
Forced Parade September 6th, we hope to see you
there, and remember to always be on the look out
for a potential Mason & Shriner.
