This year, the little bookstore on Acequia Madre has expanded its influence to include major charity benefits around town. “We’ve been very successful, and now we want to give back to the community,” Edward Borins says. In addition to running book sales at Lannan Foundation readings, raising money for local causes and hosting book signings for local and national authors, the store also stocks hundreds of titles of local and international interest, and has a selection of art books rarely seen outside a specialty shop. How do they stock such a varied and eclectic array of books? “We can buy what we want to buy,” Borins says. “Our customers realize the importance of supporting an independent bookstore.” THANK YOU! DTW, a multilabel store in historic Sena Plaza, carries tons of items for the ultra-stylish fashionista in all of us. “We make girls out of women,” Amir-Moez says. Jeans from Seven For All Mankind and Miss Sixty, jewelry from Chanel, shoes from Seychelles and Hunter, as well as clothing from Just Cavalli by Roberto Cavalli, are just a few of the names you’ll see dangling from the racks at this chock-full shop. Amir-Moez aims to carry clothes that are flattering, basic and functional, and she can dress a woman for any occasion; jersey tank tops hang right across the room from formal satin dresses. “I didn’t want to do the same thing as the other little stores in Santa Fe,” Amir-Moez says of her eclectic mix of styles. Her aim is dead-on, and DTW remains a favorite. For 21 years, Doubletake has provided Santa Feans with everything from baby strollers to stylish young-adult duds to fancy furniture for the mature abode. As Faustin “Tino” Chavez sat at his desk one day in June, he overheard a customer trying to explain a specific ring to one of his sales clerks. Tino knew exactly what she was looking for and, in a matter of minutes, found the ring through one of his exclusive retailers. Sure enough, the ring was precisely what she needed, and it arrived in the store the next week. This level of knowledge and service is the norm at Chavez. With 44 years in the jewelry business, Tino knows his stuff. “Not every store that sells jewelry is a jeweler,” he explains. “You can get jewelry just about anywhere, but not everywhere has our credentials.” Those credentials include inclusion in the American Gem Society (for which Tino has to take an exam every year to qualify) and membership in the Independent Jewelers Organization, which includes only 1,000 stores in North America. All that knowledge would be nothing without excellent, friendly service, which Chavez provides flawlessly. As the nation’s leading xeriscape experts, SFG and offshoot company High Country Gardens have made a lifestyle of being waterwise—as well as lush, flowery and beautiful. President and Chief Horticulturist David Salman is nationally renowned for breeding beautiful and exotic lowwater plants that are also cold-hardy to survive those nasty Santa Fe winters. “We don’t believe in mowing, blowing and spraying your way to success,” Ava Salman, vice president of marketing, says. But aside from awards from the American Horticulture Society and national fame, what makes SFG special is the beautiful oasis it provides for shoppers. “Sometimes people come here just to be close to nature,” Ava says of the store’s 22-year-old Western Cottage Garden. She lists SFG’s beneficial contributions to the community, including educational programs and xeriscape consultations, concluding, “We’re good for Santa Fe and good for the earth.” 2 Plants of the Southwest 3095 Agua Fria 438-8888 3 Newman’s Nursery 7501 Cerrillos Road 471-8642 1107 Pen Rd. Like it does with all its merchandise, TJ’s eliminates the middle man and buys straight from growers around the country to keep costs down and quality up. Store Captain Myles Bradshaw explains that there’s no blanket shipment for the whole country. “We tailor the merchandise to the particular neighborhoods,” he says. Crew member Olivia Treasure keeps track of which flowers are Santa Fe’s favorites and orders new shipments every day. Best-sellers like elegant orchids or lush alstroemeria are constantly re-stocked for the freshest Trader Joe’s bunches available. Hey, That Water Heater Ain’t Gonna Fix Itself. 1 Big Jo True Value Hardware 1311 Siler Road 473-2255 Santa Fe has two types of homeowners: do-it-yourselfers and can’t-help-themselvers. For both, the go-to store for supplies, tools and advice is Big Jo. The store has been in operation in Santa Fe for more than 75 years, and for nearly 25 of those years it’s been owned and operated by the C de Baca family. “Customer service is our company culture,” Jessica C de Baca, operations manager, says. In an effort to provide the best customer service in Santa Fe, the employees at Big Jo generally come with years—if not decades—of experience in the hardware business. While Big Jo has a large inventory and the option of custom orders, sometimes a customer has a need they can’t fill. “If we don’t have it, we can order it in a few days or weeks—or, if we know another company in town has it, we send the customer there,” President Ron C de Baca says. Big Jo also donates to many community causes, including the Santa Fe Public Schools, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and the Boys and Girls Club. It’s the sense of community that makes Big Jo stand out against big-box hardware stores; there’s always someone to offer help with a smile. ANNA MINZER In 1994, Kent Little moved to Santa Fe and opened a climbing-oriented store to combine his experience in retail management with his love for the outdoors. Today, Sangre de Cristo Mountain Works provides reliable products to hikers, skiers, snowshoers, climbers, boaters and just about anyone else who loves to be outside. In addition to its expansive inventory, Little says, “We have an increased level of customer service surrounded by superior products—and whether we have it or not, we’ll find it for you”—even if this means sending the customer to one of its competitors. In the face of big-box outdoor-gear retailers slowly encroaching upon its turf, SDCMW remains steadfast in its resolve to be the best. “We’ve been ingrained in this community for over 15 years and we’re interested in the community itself, rather than getting money from the community,” Little says. Whether one needs moisture-wicking socks or a carabiner, it can all be found here. Big Jo True Value Hardware 2 Ace Hardware 3 Empire Builders Supply Co.
