Best Independent Bookstore for New and/or Used Books—
Aren’t You Glad You Live Somewhere That Can Include This
Category?
1 Garcia Street Books
376 Garcia St.
986-0151
For all of the six years Edward and Eva Borins have owned Garcia Street Books, the
store has been voted Best of Santa Fe. This year, the little bookstore on Acequia
Madre has expanded its influence to include major charity benefits around town.
“We’ve been very successful, and now we want to give back to the community,”
Edward Borins says. In addition to running book sales at Lannan Foundation
readings, raising money for local causes and hosting book signings for local and
national authors, the store also stocks hundreds of titles of local and international
interest, and has a selection of art books rarely seen outside a specialty shop. How
do they stock such a varied and eclectic array of books? “We can buy what we
want to buy,” Borins says. “Our customers realize the importance of supporting an
independent bookstore.”

Feans with everything from the latest Hollywood releases to that obscure
Scandinavian drama reviewed on your favorite blog. Superior knowledge of movies extends from the staff behind the counter all the way to St. Charnez who, when
not buying movies for the store, is an editor for Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide (the
best-selling 1,600-page film encyclopedia). “We’ve always been movie freaks, so
if we didn’t do this we’d spend all our money on the other side of the counter,”
Harris says. Harris attributes their continuing success in an I’ll-just-download-itillegally culture to the loyal clientele and the personal connection Video Library

1 Dust in the Wind
131 E. Palace Ave.
986-1155
It takes guts to bring modern style to a 400-year-old building; Dust in the Wind
owner Yasmine Amir-Moez has guts—and style—in abundance. DTW, a multilabel store in historic Sena Plaza, carries tons of items for the ultra-stylish
fashionista in all of us. “We make girls out of women,” Amir-Moez says. Jeans
from Seven For All Mankind and Miss Sixty, jewelry from Chanel, shoes from
Seychelles and Hunter, as well as clothing from Just Cavalli by Roberto Cavalli,
are just a few of the names you’ll see dangling from the racks at this chock-full
shop. Amir-Moez aims to carry clothes that are flattering, basic and functional,
and she can dress a woman for any occasion; jersey tank tops hang right across
the room from formal satin dresses. “I didn’t want to do the same thing as the
other little stores in Santa Fe,” Amir-Moez says of her eclectic mix of styles. Her
aim is dead-on, and DTW remains a favorite.

1 Harry’s Clothing
202 Galisteo St.
988-1959
A recent study by the Wall Street Journal found that only 6 percent of men in
America wear a tie on a daily basis. As the country slowly slips from Casual Friday
to Casual Life, the staff at Harry’s aims to keep men fashion-conscious and looking
their best. Owner Greg Voida has owned Harry’s for 37 years now and, by providing men with quality- and style-driven brands like Jhane Barnes, Tommy Bahama
and Canali, he hopes to make the world a more beautiful place. Voida and manager Jim Flower have more than 80 years of menswear experience between them.
“We know what to put on a guy and how to fit it,” Voida says. “We can tell a size
without asking—it comes naturally after doing it for so long.” An experienced staff,
coupled with an inventory of only the best brands, makes Harry’s a one-stop shop
for the sharp-dressed man’s socks, hats and everything in between.

Great Food Tastes Better On A Great Grill
To owner Suzanne Wissman-Moore, a secondhand shop is more than just a place
to buy and sell things—it’s a community resource. Having a place to recycle your
clothes and possessions, as well as a spot to save money when buying replacements, is important to sustaining a healthy city. For 21 years, Doubletake has
provided Santa Feans with everything from baby strollers to stylish young-adult
duds to fancy furniture for the mature abode. Furthermore, Wissman-Moore says,
“We give good service—which is kind of hard to find these days.” Friendly, smiling
faces, coupled with inexpensive retail and resale items for all generations, make
Doubletake a gathering place for families. “There are people who used to come in
with their moms when they were kids; now they work here and now they’re having
babies,” Wissman-Moore says. With a vintage boutique and an improved art gallery section, Doubletake has something for everyone.

Vintage Housewares!
As Faustin “Tino” Chavez sat at his desk one day in June, he overheard a customer
trying to explain a specific ring to one of his sales clerks. Tino knew exactly what
she was looking for and, in a matter of minutes, found the ring through one of his
exclusive retailers. Sure enough, the ring was precisely what she needed, and it
arrived in the store the next week. This level of knowledge and service is the norm at
Chavez. With 44 years in the jewelry business, Tino knows his stuff. “Not every store
that sells jewelry is a jeweler,” he explains. “You can get jewelry just about anywhere,
but not everywhere has our credentials.” Those credentials include inclusion in the
American Gem Society (for which Tino has to take an exam every year to qualify)
and membership in the Independent Jewelers Organization, which includes only
1,000 stores in North America. All that knowledge would be nothing without excellent, friendly service, which Chavez provides flawlessly. Dolores Chavez, Tino’s wife,
says, “Our customers are our family—they are a part of our lives.”

Best Shoe Store for Showing Your Tootsies Some Love
Sanbusco Market Center
530 Montezuma St.
983-3900
“I’ve always loved shoes—
most women do,” On Your Feet
owner Nina Houle says. This
love brought Houle’s shoe store
from a 500-square-foot space
on Old Santa Fe Trail to the
5,000-square-foot showroom it
now inhabits in the Sanbusco
Center, not to mention On Your
Little Feet, the brand new kids’
store Houle has opened across
the hall. The shoes at OYF serve
a variety of purposes. Athletic
sandals from Keen, hiking boots
from Merrill or work-ready
slides from Beautifeel are all
available, and employees are
always on the floor to offer
advice or help with sizing. They
don’t work on commission so
the buyer can rest assured they
won’t be pushed into a sale.

A plant nursery in the desert seems counterintuitive; for Santa Fe Greenhouses,
it has been a blessing. As the nation’s leading xeriscape experts, SFG and offshoot company High Country Gardens have made a lifestyle of being waterwise—as well as lush, flowery and beautiful. President and Chief Horticulturist
David Salman is nationally renowned for breeding beautiful and exotic lowwater plants that are also cold-hardy to survive those nasty Santa Fe winters.
“We don’t believe in mowing, blowing and spraying your way to success,” Ava
Salman, vice president of marketing, says. But aside from awards from the
American Horticulture Society and national fame, what makes SFG special is the
beautiful oasis it provides for shoppers. “Sometimes people come here just to
be close to nature,” Ava says of the store’s 22-year-old Western Cottage Garden.
She lists SFG’s beneficial contributions to the community, including educational
programs and xeriscape consultations, concluding, “We’re good for Santa Fe and
good for the earth.”

Best Place to Buy Flowers to Show Him or Her Your Love.

AYLA BYSTROM-WILLIAMS
Walk through the doors of
Trader Joe’s and you’ll be
barraged with the sights
and smells of cut bouquets
and potted botanicals
galore. Whether you’re in
search of a romantic bunch
of long-stemmed lilies or
a basil plant to keep in the
kitchen, TJ’s is the place to
go. Like it does with all its
merchandise, TJ’s eliminates the middle man and
buys straight from growers around the country
to keep costs down and
quality up. Store Captain
Myles Bradshaw explains
that there’s no blanket shipment for the whole country.
“We tailor the merchandise
to the particular neighborhoods,” he says. Crew
member Olivia Treasure
keeps track of which flowers are Santa Fe’s favorites
and orders new shipments
every day. Best-sellers like
elegant orchids or lush
alstroemeria are constantly
re-stocked for the freshest
Trader Joe’s
bunches available. The best
part, Bradshaw adds, is that
TJ’s maintains a hassle-free
return policy if the buyer’s not satisfied or if wilting sets in too early.

Best Local Eyeglass Shop ’Cause You’re Not Ready For Lasik
1 Eye Associates of New Mexico
2947 Rodeo Park East
995-1001/983-6613
Sometimes you need to go to the eye doctor, and sometimes you need eyeglasses,
and they usually happen simultaneously—so what’s better than a single building that has it all? Eye Associates of New Mexico, with locations from Clovis to
Farmington and everywhere in between, has been helping New Mexicans with
their eye problems for 30 years. Its Santa Fe location includes a surgery center (for
stuff like cataract removal and Lasik) and an optical shop. Four certified opticians
provide the kind of individual attention once reserved for specialty frame shops.
Optical Process Advisor Dolores King says with a smile, “We like to have fun. We
try to give our customers a really pleasant, unique experience.” Frames from the
likes of Gucci, Lucky and Nine West are available, and the shop offers warranties
and full repair services for those who mistake their glasses for a seat cushion. King
says, “We want a person’s glasses to be an asset to their appearance so they not
only see better, but they look better too.”

that endeavor. “We’re here to educate and to help people be better caretakers for their
pets,” she says of the staff at Critters, which offers a huge selection of high-quality
pet foods. In addition to nutrition and supplements, Critters also carries toys, treats,
leashes, collars, bowls and even stuff for not-so-fuzzy creatures. Lizards, snakes and
the like will be happy to hear that cages, lights and reptile food can now be found at
Critters. For 10 years, Critters has been a favorite in town; and Moore explains her
secret to success: “I really, really, really try hard to keep it the same.” This keeps the
selection reliable, the product knowledge consistent and Santa Feans’ pets well fed
and healthy.

Santa Fe has two types of homeowners: do-it-yourselfers and can’t-help-themselvers. For both, the go-to store for supplies, tools and advice is Big Jo. The store
has been in operation in Santa Fe for more than 75 years, and for nearly 25 of those
years it’s been owned and operated by the C de Baca family. “Customer service is
our company culture,” Jessica C de Baca, operations manager, says. In an effort to
provide the best customer service in Santa Fe, the employees at Big Jo generally
come with years—if not decades—of experience in the hardware business. While
Big Jo has a large inventory and the option of custom orders, sometimes a customer has a need they can’t fill. “If we don’t have it, we can order it in a few days
or weeks—or, if we know another company in town has it, we send the customer
there,” President Ron C de Baca says. Big Jo also donates to many community
causes, including the Santa Fe Public Schools, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and the
Boys and Girls Club. It’s the sense of community that makes Big Jo stand out against
big-box hardware stores; there’s always someone to offer help with a smile.

In 1994, Kent Little moved to Santa Fe and opened a climbing-oriented store to
combine his experience in retail management with his love for the outdoors.
Today, Sangre de Cristo Mountain Works provides reliable products to hikers, skiers,
snowshoers, climbers, boaters and just about anyone else who loves to be outside.
In addition to its expansive inventory, Little says, “We have an increased level of customer service surrounded by superior products—and whether we have it or not, we’ll
find it for you”—even if this means sending the customer to one of its competitors. In
the face of big-box outdoor-gear retailers slowly encroaching upon its turf, SDCMW
remains steadfast in its resolve to be the best. “We’ve been ingrained in this community for over 15 years and we’re interested in the community itself, rather than getting
money from the community,” Little says. Whether one needs moisture-wicking socks
or a carabiner, it can all be found here.
