Summer 2013 - The Horse Shelter
The Horse Shelter New Mexico’s Sanctuary for Abused, Abandoned and Neglected Horses Summer/Fall 2013 www.thehorseshelter.org Dear Supporters of The Horse Shelter, All of us at the Horse Shelter: Board members, staff and 77 equine residents would like to thank you for your participation in and generous donations to our recent auction on May 19th, 2013. This was our 12th annual fundraiser and they keep getting bigger and better! We had a much larger tent which allowed for more breathing and shopping space and provided a cooler environment as always a wonderful lunch by Chef Martin (we don’t change the things that are already perfect!) and we also added demonstrations on our horses this year, courtesy of Clint Mortenson (thank you again Clint for your support!) and Amanda Lange. Due to raising Clint Mortenson showing General at the auction. hay prices (CO only got 50% of what they were expecting to cut in the first Clint took our gorgeous gelding in for training and cutting of this year) and the need for critical upgrades as well as ever increas‐ General was adopted the day of the auction. ing intake numbers, we heavily rely on the funds this event generates. So thank you for your support! Collective donations of goods and services to our benefit brought in just over $100,000 this year and we managed to keep our cost of the event below $8,000. This is due to our business event sponsors being incredibly generous to us. More than half of the tent expense is donated, wine, beer, water, soft drinks, food supplies, advertising, are donated. Restaurant Martin donates the entire luncheon, this year joined by the Ranch House, to make the meal and event a memorable experience. We could not do this without all of our gener‐ ous donors and are extremely grateful for their continued support. Businesses from Santa Fe, Albuquerque and far beyond have donated some incredible items and services to us. Individual supporters have donated items, vacation packages and valuables to be auctioned at our event. Not to forget Sue Murphy (donor), Linda Rinkinen (volunteer), the incredible crowd that shows up every year, to enjoy it all and snatch up Beth Longanecker (donor); left to right. some amazing deals. Many of you this year “bought out” items at prices above (photo by Thayer Hutchinson) retail value and signed up to sponsor a horse. We are deeply grateful for your generosity and support. We truly appreciate that you show up and really come through for the horses every year. We do have a great number of incredibly valuable and diverse items at our auction and we certainly believe we have the best group of supporters ever! That being said, we are always looking to grow this event and the dollars it generates and we have made room in our tent for a lot more participants. Please spread the word to your friends and hopefully we can make this event even bigger and better next year! In our efforts to keep costs low, we are sending our thank you letter this way. You should all have received your personalized donation receipts by now, if not please let us know. Please receive this as your THANK YOU from all of us. We are extremely grateful for your help and support, it is vitally important to our continued success. In gratitude, The Horse Shelter Board The Horse Shelter Board of Directors Jennifer Rios (Co-President) Berkley Chesen, DVM Jay Ritter (Co-President) Carole Berger Jack Fisher (Vice President) Gloria Moss Carol Hotubbee (Secretary) Francesca Orofino Arlen Sarkissian (Treasurer) Tara Earley Meet Some Of Our Loyal Donors Michael and Rita Linder own Canyon Road’s Plaza de Suenos and Milagros which is the home of Jewel Mark, Jacqueline's Place and Cafe Greco. The Linders feel a strong connection to horses because of their beauty, ability to love and care for each other as a herd, and the great glimpse of divinity that horses exude in every moment. Michael and Rita began their love affair with horses over 40 years ago after rescu‐ ing two abused horses, Comanche and Apache in upstate New York. Comanche was an Appaloosa who was hit on the head with a sledge hammer and referred to as “Crazy App” before they rescued him. Later in life Comanche developed a trau‐ matic cataract from that injury and went blind, but was still willing to go on rides. Michael (left) and Rita Linder (middle) at event Comanche, given a second chance by the with their friend Philip Trujillo (right) Linders, became the best of friends with Rita (even after stepping on her toe and breaking it) and they rode many trails together from New York to California where Rita and Michael moved. While living in Palm Desert CA, Rita, Michael and their kids Julia and Carl rode in the desert every week. Along the way they acquired two Arabians from Wayne Newton named Ramist and Juliette. After visiting Santa Fe in 1987 the Linders fell in love with Santa Fe and relo‐ cated with their kids and horses. Comanche, after 30 years with the Linders, was laid to rest in Santa Fe at the age of 38. Today, Rita, Michael and their granddaughter Jacqueline ride the beautiful trails of Santa Fe and always return from a ride invigorated and full of wonder. The Horse Shelter is very grateful to have Rita and Michael Linder as long term supporters. They’ve donated to our May auction every year since 2003 and help make it a successful fundraiser. Thank you Rita and Michael for your continued support and donations! “What I know for sure is that what you give comes back to you.” ‐ Oprah Winfrey “Raise a Shelter Program Update” Somewhat delayed, mostly due to welding limitations in the high spring winds and dryness, the first four shelters are in! Two 12x15 and two 12x12 shelters were put up by Jeff Barrows Fencing. This was made possible by a grant from ASPCA and a gen‐ erous private donation made by Lee and Paul Schmidt. This is just the beginning! Please consider raising a shelter at the Horse Shelter. Kilo already using a new 12x15 shelter! Update on our Horse Training Program To our great regret our trainer Amanda Lange felt the call of California and resigned from her posi‐ tion at The Horse Shelter. Thank you Amanda for all of your great work at the Shelter and best wishes for your continued success. To replace Amanda we have hired two new part time trainers. We are excited to have Kaili Syme and Alex Verzuh join us in our ongoing work to make our horses more adoptable. We could not do this without having received another very Kaili Syme with Happy generous grant from the Melville Hankins Family Foundation towards our training program. A great THANK YOU to the Board of Directors and Executive Director of Melville Hankins Family Foundation for your continued support. It makes all the difference! Gorgeous Rocky (photo by Linda Rinkinen) hundred pounds, but what a sweet gelding! How Abuelo Came To The Horse Shelter One morning, last September, I received a call from a Livestock Board inspector in the Raton area. She said: “I have this approx. 25 year old Appaloosa gentleman and I would hate to have to put him down, do you have space for him?” At that time we didn’t, so I asked her if she could hold on to him while I tried to place him in a different rescue. She agreed and said she had him at her house, was feeding him and her kids loved him. So the phone calls began trying to find a home for this Appy. It took until October with many a door opening and closing again, until finally space opened at THS. When I called with the news, the LB inspector was thrilled and told me he had gained some weight and now had a pot belly. So mid October Abuelo arrived. When I first saw his intake picture (on left) I won‐ dered that if that was a pot belly, what had he looked like five weeks before? We were slowly able to put more weight on him and now we have a great addition to our herd. Abuelo is turning into a social butterfly and THS ambassador. He loves to have lunch with the different groups that come as volunteers to the Shelter and be the center of attention. His is just one of many stories at The Horse Shelter that motivates us to con‐ tinue doing the work we do and helps us stay dedicated to our cause. These horses deserve a second chance.
