We’re so glad you’re here to celebrate with us! I’m honored to serve as President of United Way of Greater Duluth during such an exciting time. New faces on the leadership team, an upcoming merger with United Way of SuperiorDouglas County, shifting ground in workplace giving, increasing diversity of philanthropic options, expanding availability of donor-centered technology tools – these changes and challenges are keeping us all busy! Alongside all of this transformative work, there’s one constant – you. We could not do a thing without partners like you. You help us raise, invest and leverage millions of dollars annually in philanthropic contributions. You choose to give, advocate and volunteer through United Way to make life better in our community. You work with us to create long-term social change that produces healthy, well-educated and financially-stable individuals and families. You are the United Way. And I could not be prouder to serve alongside you in this important venture. To all organizers, sponsors and attendees of this celebration, their families, friends, and colleagues, thank you and enjoy the event. The Duluth “hub” serves residents in 39 counties in Minnesota as well as Douglas County in NW Wisconsin. United Way Fundraising Campaign Each year, more than 400 local workplaces and thousands of individual donors participate in United Way of Greater Duluth’s Community Fundraising Campaign. This campaign supports local health and human service programs that create real, lasting change for individuals and families in the Greater Duluth area and on the North Shore. Participating in this program helps businesses raise their public profile while assuring our partner agencies can focus on their clients. For more information contact Michelle Hargrave at 218-726-4771. United Way Community Services The AFL-CIO Community Services Program works with union members in a variety of ways. It assists union members in need. As a liaison, UWCS informs labor groups and change makers about the obstacles those in poverty face when trying to find employment. It also mobilizes the caring power of working union members to get them actively involved and participating in the United Way campaign and volunteerism. For more information contact Lynette Swanberg at 218-726-4775. United Way Volunteer Center United Way’s Volunteer Center connects workplaces and individuals with volunteer opportunities at over 50 local non-profit agencies. Volunteering is a hands-on way to see the impact local agencies are creating in our community and to help advance this work. Through the Volunteer Center’s initiatives like Reader, Tutor, Mentor, or Day of Caring, agencies are provided with valuable skills and resources from community members. For more information contact Liz Pawlik at 218-724-4889. 11 uwgd_celebrationbooklet_2015r_EMedits.indd 11 4/27/2015 4:14:06 PM United Way Partner Agencies c Greater Duluth: United Way of Greater Duluth invests in local programs that Foster Successful Children & Youth, Improve People’s Health, Promote Financial Stability & Independence and Ensure a Strong Network of Basic Human Services. Your gift to United Way supports the foundation of our community through the work of local programs that impact people’s lives in a real and meaningful way. Your gift to United Way impacts all of us who live and work here. With the help of your gift, last year: • More than 2 million pounds of food were distributed. • Over 221,000 meals were served. • More than 410,000 articles of free clothing were distributed to those in need. • More than 38,000 nights of shelter were provided to those with no place to stay. • Legal assistance was provided on over 4,300 cases. • 9,100 children and youth participated in high-quality early childhood and youth development programs that provide a strong foundation for their success in school and life. United Way works together with non-profit agencies and community volunteers to invest wisely in our community in order to create real, long-lasting change. Advancing the common good is less about helping one person at a time and more about changing systems to help all of us. United Way leads a united effort to strengthen our community by mobilizing resources to improve people’s lives. We get results. 14 uwgd_celebrationbooklet_2015r_EMedits.indd 14 4/27/2015 4:14:06 PM United Way of Greater Duluth Best in Show (Total Dollars Raised) c LARGE ORGANIZATION (51+ Employees) UNION GROUP 1. 2. 3. 4. LIVE UNITED is not only a mission and a goal, it is a call to action – to give, advocate, and volunteer in order to improve the lives of everyone in the community. The recipient of this award leads by example, and today we recognize and honor Karen B Alworth. Give. Advocate. Volunteer. LIVE UNITED. It’s more than a nice phrase; it truly describes Karen Alworth’s dedication and commitment to United Way. Karen first became involved with United Way in 1976. She was a summer employee at Kellogg’s in Battle Creek, Michigan, where her job was to put the raisins in the Raisin Bran. After she donated an entire day’s wage to the United Way campaign, she inspired other employees to also give generously. “When I was growing up, my hero was Helen Keller. She once said, ‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.’ It’s the way I’ve wanted to live my life. This is United Way,” said Karen. Karen B Alworth After moving to Duluth, Karen worked as a United Way Campaign Executive in the fall of 1979. She was responsible for the accounts of small businesses in West Duluth and saw this as a great opportunity to get to know the city. Early in 1995 she became a co-chair of the UWGD Leadership Team, which raises more than 30% of the campaign funds each year. Karen has served as co-chair of the Leadership Team for over 20 years. Karen joined the UWGD Board of Directors in 2002 and served 9 years. During this time, she chaired the Campaign Committee and served on the Campaign Cabinet, Governance, and Fund Distribution Committees. Karen served as a co-chair in the 2007 United Way Campaign. Over the years, she has been a part of nearly every United Way event - Chili Cook-off, Day of Caring, Bike Swap. Karen and her husband, Royal, have four children. From AmeriCorps members serving with United Way and Minnesota Reading Corps to volunteering with SOAR Career Solutions, all share her passion for service and embrace the value of giving back to our community. 22 uwgd_celebrationbooklet_2015r_EMedits.indd 22 4/27/2015 4:14:07 PM United Way Leadership Society c Live Learn by doing Lead Leadership giving continues to be an important part of our total campaign, representing more than 32% of the total dollars raised. We gratefully acknowledge members of our Leadership Society. by giving With an annual contribution of $1000 or more, Leadership contributors significantly increase the ability of United Way to actively address critical community needs. Every by example. contributor is a leader in our community, demonstrating compassion and passion. They believe that leading by example will inspire friends, peers, and associates to also step forward - to support what matters and make a difference in the lives of those who live in the Greater Duluth and on the North Shore. Our Emerging Leaders program recognizes donors at the $1,000 level based on their commitment to a three-year progression into the Leadership Society. Or, make a gift of a product or service to our upcoming events. #5 VOLUNTEER (V): Give the gift of time - Volunteering is a hands-on way to see the impact local agencies are creating in our community and to help advance this work. We can connect you with roles that align with your abilities, interests, and availability. #6 LEADERSHIP (L): With an annual contribution of $1000 or more, Leadership contributors significantly impact critical community needs RESULT: RECOGNITION AND PRIDE - When you and your associates conduct a campaign, sponsor an event, or organize a volunteer team, you grow morale, engage your employees, and foster a sense of pride.
