We’re honored that you’re here to celebrate with us! Last year at this event, I pointed ahead to a big change coming to our community. A merger between the United Ways of Greater Duluth and SuperiorDouglas County was in the works. I’m happy to report that it’s not in the works anymore. We did it! The newly named Head of the Lakes United Way launched on July 1, 2015, with responsibility for separate campaigns in Ashland-Bayfield, Greater Duluth, the North Shore, and Superior-Douglas County. Our focus now becomes revitalizing, strengthening and expanding fundraising efforts and impact across our region. With partners like you, I know we’ll be successful. As our celebration gets underway, there’s one important thing left to say - thank you. United Way would not exist without you. To all organizers, sponsors and attendees of this luncheon, their families, friends and colleagues - I am grateful for all you do! Enjoy the event, everyone. The organization is dedicated to promoting and supporting development of a clean, safe and vibrant central business district. She led the GDC through its creation and implementation of a Special Service District, as well as its renewals. In addition, the GDC has seen growth in membership, sponsorship and special events during her tenure. Stokes has more than 20 years of management experience in the private and not-for-profit sectors. Kristi Stokes Prior to assuming her current position, she served as a News Director/Anchor at six radio stations, including the local CBS affiliate. She is also active in the community, currently serving on the Board of Directors for the YMCA and Bentleyville Tour of Lights. In addition, she serves on the board for the International Downtown Association. Stokes was featured as one of Duluth’s 10 “Movers & Shakers” in the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal and was named to the Duluth News Tribune’s inaugural “Top 20 under 40” list of young community leaders. Stokes also knows first-hand what it is like to be a small business owner, as she and her husband, Dave, own a video production company. 12 United Way 2-1-1 provides information on and referrals to community, health, and social services. A 24-hour, state-wide service, you can reach United Way 2-1-1 by calling 2-1-1 or 800-543-7709. The Duluth “hub” serves residents in 39 counties in Minnesota as well as Douglas County in NW Wisconsin. United Way Community Giving Campaign Each year, more than 500 local workplaces and thousands of individual donors participate in United Way’s Community Giving Campaign. This campaign supports local health and human service programs that create real, lasting change for individuals and families in our region. Participating in this program helps businesses raise their public profile while assuring our partner agencies can focus on their clients. For more information contact Michelle Hargrave at 218-726-4771. United Way Community Services The AFL-CIO Community Services Program works with union members in a variety of ways. It assists union members in need. As a liaison, UWCS informs labor groups and change makers about the obstacles those in poverty face when trying to find employment. It also mobilizes the caring power of working union members to get them actively involved and participating in the United Way campaign and volunteerism. For more information contact Rachel Loeffler-Kemp at 218-726-4775. United Way Volunteer Center United Way’s Volunteer Center connects workplaces and individuals with volunteer opportunities at over 60 local non-profit agencies. Volunteering is a hands-on way to see the impact local agencies are creating in our community and to help advance this work. Through the Volunteer Center’s initiatives like Reader, Tutor, Mentor, or Day of Caring, agencies are provided with valuable skills and resources from community members. The following volunteers were nominated for this special award. The Volunteer of the Year Award recipient will be announced during the 2015-16 Live United Luncheon. Congratulations to all the nominees and thank you for your volunteer service! LIVE UNITED Award The LIVE UNITED Award is presented to an individual or group in our community that not only understands what it means to LIVE UNITED, but demonstrates it. LIVE UNITED is not only a mission and a goal, it is a call to action – to give, advocate, and volunteer in order to improve the lives of everyone in the community. The recipient of this award leads by example, and today we recognize and honor Dan Leslie Give. Advocate. Volunteer. LIVE UNITED. This statement truly describes Dan Leslie’s dedication and commitment to United Way. CHUM Flo Bonkowske Dan Leslie’s involvement with United Way started simply enough more than 20 years ago. His union, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 31, asked if he’d be interested in helping with United Way’s annual fall fundraising campaign as a “loaned executive” to help educate others about the many ways United Way helps the community. Duluth Area Family YMCA Alpha Delta Fraternity Sure, Dan said, and in the process he saw the breadth and depth of United Way assistance to those in need. “It was eye-opening to the point that I never left. It’s hard to walk away from the need when you know that it’s there,” Dan said. “You just need to help people. You just need to be part of the solution.” Duluth Area Family YMCA Jim and Maggie Pierre Just Kids Dental Roberta Lindemann Men as Peachmakers Kris Simonson Dan Leslie Dan, who works for Minnesota Power, served for 15 years on the board of the United Way of Greater Duluth, now Head of the Lakes United Way. He left the board this past fall after serving on various committees over the years, including the executive committee and the governance committee. Dan has been a powerful advocate for United Way at his workplace. Over the years he helped lead Minnesota Power’s participation in events such as Day of Caring and the Chili Cook-off. He has been a willing participant in many other endeavors to raise money or lend a hand, including Power Volunteering, Minnesota Power’s kickoff to its United Way fall fundraising campaign. Save Haven Gerry Stephens 22 Volunteer Attorney Program Julie Benfield Woodland Hills Bev Merritt Read the complete profile of each nominee at duluthnewstribune.com Dan’s wealth of experience in planning and executing a variety of events isn’t lost on others. He’s often sought out as a resource to help identify potential pitfalls or offer advice. When it comes to United Way, or other efforts to benefit his church or community, Dan said he “selfishly” signs on. “I enjoy doing it. It makes you feel good.” 23 Head of the Lakes United Way Lake Superior Leadership Society 2015-16 Tocqueville Contributors of $10,000 and above Karen and Royal Alworth Elisabeth Mason Mary C.
