While substantial, it’s modest compared to its much bigger sisters in the Great Lakes system, and that means wind and weather aren’t as likely to impede your ability to ŧE?ť ʠ>ťť ťťEŧť E ?Et ʠťťťť and anchorages—all close to where you started. Lake St. Clair is truly a boater’s paradise. Its average depth is 11 feet, so the water warms quickly in the spring. With dozens of islands and a mostly sandy bottom, there are a multitude of great spots to anchor, gather and take a dip with the entire family while others may be more adult friendly! So what if you don’t know what to do and where to go? “There is something for everyone on Lake St. Clair,” according to Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. w! ťŧťŦťťEŧŧťť ?ʠ? ť ťʠ ťŧť ťŧť COURTESY OF JOEL PIATEK, FISH HEADZ SPORT FISHING Lake St. Clair is recognized as the ‘Muskie Capitol of Canada.’ COURTESY OF LAKE ST. CLAIR TOURISM INITIATIVE 0ŤE?EŦŤʘ?Ť Lake St. Clair. On any given day, Lake St. Clair, also know as “The Heart of the Great Lakes,” is home for such pleasures as a ride on a go-fast boat, reeling in a trophy musky, pedaling your bike along the shore, enjoying the sunset with a glass of wine at a waterfront restaurant — and so much more. * ťťŦťŧE ťťʡť party. On this lake of many riches, you can discover your own personal passions and pleasures. And the great thing about Lake St. Clair is that you’ll ʠŦ?ťťťťŧ within minutes of each other—unlike the other Great Lakes, where there are vast expanses of roadways and waterways between stops. But make no mistake, Lake St. Clair is Big Water. With 440 square miles of surface area, and 160 miles of shoreline, it’s about 26 miles long and 24 miles wide (yes, that means here in Macomb County, Michigan’s backyard.“Lake St. Clair is the busiest freshwater lake than any other lake in the world during the summer months,” Hackel adds. It’s little wonder Lake St. Clair is such a boating Mecca. It boasts hundreds of marinas, parks, piers, coastal hamlets, and anchorages—and has some 150,000 registered boats of all sizes and shapes in the region and several of the State’s busiest boat launch ramps —all to enjoy its waterways during the busy season. Adding to Lake St. Clair’s appeal is the fact that it sits between two countries— the U.S. and Canada, thus has an ťť ʡťBŦEŦ your Nexus Card or your I-68 if you plan to come by boat). Both sides of the border have an amazing array of dining, shopping and recreational opportunities to discover. “As part of the Two-Nation Destination Vacation, neighboring Windsor Essex, Ontario, provides visitors with the opportunity to chart their course into Canadian waters via Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River,” says Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island Chief Executive #ʠŧ?%#>w*ŧťu Muskie Capital of Canada,’ our area is truly an incredible location to cast your line. Various other species swim fat and plentiful here as well including walleye, bass and perch. “Guide your own boat into one of our many area docks, head out with one of our experienced charters, or simply drop a line from a waterside park,” he says. “Other opportunities await you as well — for a leisurely excursion, try stand-up paddle boarding along the calm shores of Lake St. Clair, or take a seat and kayak your way through the gentle currents. And for the ultimate wet and wild thrill, ride the open waves by jet skiing or strap on a pair of water skis and hang on tight.” Other great Ontario destinations also beckon, including Belle River on the Lake, the Thames River, Chatham-Kent, Wallaceburg and the Sarnia-Lambton area—all accessible by sea and by land. And along the Michigan shoreline, you can explore mile after mile of great ports of call, phenomenal dining and unique shopping experiences. From Port Huron to Marysville and St. Clair, from New Baltimore to Harrison Township and Mt. Clemens, from the Nautical Mile in St. Clair Shores through the Grosse Pointe communities and into bustling Detroit, thousands of recreational and entertainment venues abound. If you don’t know where to start, we can help. The Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative, ťyʠťťŧť promote the lake, publishes an annual Lake St. Clair Circle Tour Map of the Top 99 Destinations and Attractions. We also #y.y.Ŧʠ interesting news, a calendar of events and activities, along with ideas about what there is to see and do around the lake. And Southwest Florida is home to many parttime snowbirds and full time residents who hail from the Great Lakes Regions in the United States and Canada. One of the most unique features of southwest Florida is its many options for waterfront living: along the Gulf of Mexico, inland deep water canals, rivers, bays, and lakes. The variety of waterfront recreation is extraordinary: pleasure boating on yachts, cruisers, personal watercraft, or sailboat; kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding; water skiing; and world-class salt-water and freshwater angling. Whether traveling by land or by sea, there are beautiful white sand beaches along the entire coast. The primary categories of waterfront properties in southwest Florida are: Gulf of Mexico beach front Caloosahatchee River front Bays and Harbors Deep Saltwater Canals (aka channels) All Southwest Florida coastal areas have waterfront property, but Cape Coral is by far the most abundant, with over 400 miles of canals. The ultimate perk: the boat is just steps away in the backyard (say hello to the spontaneous cocktail cruise). Endless Cruising Destinations (Be mindful however that in some locations, canal depth may limit draft ťŧťť {ŧŧʠEťť vessel length due to turnaround space). Condominiums on Sailboat Access waterways and marinas start at about $200,000 and go up to a million or more for a penthouse unit. Single-family sailboat access homes start around $375,000, with many wonderful choices in the $500,000 to $900,000 range. Luxury properties start in the low one millions. Vacant, unimproved sailboat access home sites are $250,000 to one million. Gulf Access Properties Gulf access canal properties are on canal systems that lead to the Gulf of ,ŧ?ŦEťťʠ bridges that limit the height of the boat that can travel on the waterway. Bridge clearance of 8 or 10 feet at mean high tide is typical and generally it is 30 minutes or more to the Gulf. For boaters, the choices for short or erfront extended cruising are dizzying. Our waterfront home is in Cape Coral, smack dab in the middle of some of the greatest boating Florida has to offer. From our home base where our 31’ Express Cruiser is docked, it’s a short tripp ont to enjoy casual or fine dining at waterfront restaurants and resorts in Cape Coral, downtown Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach,, Sanibel, Captiva, Cabbage Key, and more.. yers A great day out is to anchor off Fort Myers a, or Beach, Lovers Key Beach, North Captiva, oat, is Cayo Costa. Naples, just two hours by boat, one of our favorite southern route trips.. We get a slip at Crayton’s Cove and stay a night or two so we have ample time to take in the g. renowned beaches, shopping, and dining. Traveling north there is much to exploree in rasota, the beautiful beach towns of Venice, Sarasota, Tampa-St Pete, and Tarpon Springs. For those eing who want to enjoy the serenity of just being on the water, there are well-documentedd ters anchorages along the entire coast. Boaters her on have their choice of cruising styles, either tal the protected channels of the Intercoastal lm Waterway (ICW) or on the wide open, calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. And if all of that is not enough, there is indeed more: the Florida Keys, the entire east coast oast of Florida, and the islands of the Bahamass are all popular cruising destinations for Southwest hwest Florida boaters.
