Surrounded by the shops of Berlin’s fashion scene, art galleries, media agencies and countless cafes, bars and restaurants, the essential Berlin is just around the corner. Hackesche Höfe, Alexanderplatz with the landmark television tower, Gendarmenmarkt, Prenzlauer Berg and Museumsinsel are just a little walk away. The property was built in the end of the 19th century as a residential building for officers before it became a military hospital during the First World War. The house also survived the Second World War and was occupied by the Russian secret service from then on. The KGB operated a telephone surveillance station to monitor the phone conversations between East and West Berliners. Some weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the agents left the building overnight, their job was over. From 1990, the neighbourhood became a booming district for arts, underground clubs and galleries, and so the house was a place of subculture and parties for over a decade. In 2005, after two years of refurbishment, Lux 11 opened as a boarding house. It became the favourite of Berlin’s creative scene immediately and is now the most popular designer residence in Berlin, being fi rst choice for DJs, musicians and celebrities. It offers 72 spacious open-plan apartments, ranging in size from 25 – 55 m2, featuring a fully equipped kitchenette, creating a truly cosy and at-home feel. All four-star comforts, such as 24-hour reception and room service, are available. The 160 m2 penthouse can also be used as an exclusive meeting room. Lux 11, named after its location on Rosa-Luxemburg-Str. also houses Luchs Restaurant, serving Italian cuisine, and the bar The Lodge, as well as Aveda HairSpa and the fashion store Ulf Haines. EIGHT NINE TEN ELEVEN TWELVE THIRTEEN The penthouse is a spectacular apartment of 160 m2 on the top floor of Lux 11. With two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a large living room and an open kitchen, it is the perfect place for living in Mitte. Designer furniture by Brühl, a fi replace and a rooftop terrace directly facing the TV tower complete the experience. No surprise that many celebrities, actors and musicians have lived here. A separate entrance guarantees privacy. The penthouse is also a great place for your event, presentation or photo / fi lm production. With conference equipment it can accommodate meetings for up to 20 people. The restaurant’s long rectangular dining room is flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing massive amounts of natural light to flood the room. It provides a great contrast to warm darker tones, such as the charcoal-grey seat cushions, wooden floor and indirect lighting, creating a serene and cosy environment. Luchs has a capacity of 100 guests plus another 60 seats on the sunny terrace. The cuisine features Italian classics such as homemade pasta and the best of meat and fish. www.luchs-berlin.de EIGHTEEN NINETEEN YOUR PLACE TO RETOX THE LODGE BAR The Lodge, an adjacent lounge made of stone and wood, is a cosy, intimate refuge where to begin or end one’s night with the perfect libation. Open from 7 p.m. to all wee hours of the night, Lux 11 guests and Berliners can come together to mingle and enjoy classic cocktails, or to discover unusual flavours created by the in-house mixologist. www.the-lodge-berlin.de TWENTY TWENTYONE Beate Kahlcke runs Aveda HairSpa next to the Lux 11 lobby. Her styling, colouring and skin treatment programmes follow ayurvedic principles, specially adapted to your personal needs. But not only the flower-based Aveda products will touch your body and soul – Beate’s laughter that can be heard all over Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse will do so, too. Rosa-Luxemburg-Str. 9 –13 – 10178 Berlin – +49 30 2809 1918 – www.beatekahlcke.de TWENTYTWO TWENTYTHREE If you want to attract the hottest artists, the hippest actors and the coolest creative types to your hotels, do what Thomas Tänzer, Elmo Hagendorf and Dirk Dreyer do in Berlin: ‘ THROW OPEN THE DOORS, INVITE THEM ALL IN AND LET THEM RUN WILD. ’ ‘Love it or leave it’ – this is the slogan for all of Thomas Tänzer’s, Elmo Hagendorf's and Dirk Dreyer’s hotels. The Weinmeister and The Lux in Berlin take aim at just about every hotel convention left standing. With the opening of The Weinmeister in July of 2010, Tänzer and Hagendorf recruited Dirk Dreyer, a former DJ and record label talent scout, to apply his talents and experience to managing the two popular Berlin hotels. Located in the pulsating heart of Mitte, the hotels are 24-hour playgrounds for adults that exude a seductive draw for fi lm, music and entertainment crowds. The infl uence of Berlin’s creative scene is felt in many of The Weinmeister’s design details, from floors done by the local street art collective, Paint Club, to the graffitisplattered front door or the HURTS room, designed by the British pop-synth duo. Photographer Henrik Pfeifer’s black and white photographs are exhibited in each of the hotel’s 88 rooms. Well connected in the city’s cultural scenes, Tänzer, Hagendorf and Dreyer have set a new standard in Berlin’s hospitality sector with a set of properties that embody modern comfort and high style. ‘ WE DON’T DO HOTELS – WE’RE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY. ’ ‘It’s mainly the mixture when I’m sitting in the lobby,’ says Dreyer, recalling an evening two weeks earlier when Mando Diao and Juliette Lewis were both staying at The Weinmeister. ‘I said, “Hey, this is it”. It’s the band, and they brought their wives and kids, and it’s Juliette Lewis with blue hair eating goulash soup. And there are fashion people around and tourists taking pictures of our graffiti entrance. This is the vibe that we want.’ http://www.madebyoriginals.com/originals/thomastanzer-elmo-hagendorf-dirk-dreyer TWENTYFOUR TWENTYFIVE FÜNF ROSA-LUXEMBURG-STRASSE Best Of Germany Weekend Club Best Of Germany Weekend club When you are looking for a souvenir with style, you have to visit Best Of Germany, straight opposite Lux 11. The shop owner Thomas Eissler is a very nice guy, offering traditional German pieces and products from all over Germany. Here, you can get books, toys or local drinks. ‘We have a High-End Cuckoo Clock from Thomas in the Lux 11 lobby – and we just love it’. The former ‘Haus des Reisens’ hosts our favourite nightclub. On the top floors of the tower building, the Weekend club has two dance floors with state-of-the-art sound systems for an international party crowd. The rooftop bar has a Balearic vibe and a spectacular view. Weekend’s guest DJs usually stay at Lux 11 and our staff might be able to get your name on the guest list. On the weekends, you have a high chance of meeting DJs playing at clubs such as Weekend or Berghain. Ante Perry is one of our regular guests. He tells us about his five travel essentials: 1) Credit cards Without a credit card life can be hard to you. You can not even check in to hotels! 2) MacBook When you’re travelling, you want to use your time intelligently. Of course you can work, but I prefer making some beats or watching movies in planes or trains. And I love using WLAN in hotels! 3) Mobile phone Sometimes I lose my mobile in Berlin, after having a heavy night. Then I call the reception, sometimes they’ve found it, sometimes not! 4) Basset If you have long hair as I have, you need to brush it after every shower. But if I forgot my basset, I call the reception one more time. 5) Music Life without music is bad life. At Lux 11 you can connect your iPhone with a docking station. The party can begin … Ante Perry is polarising in many ways – with his appearance, his uncompromising rocking DJ sets, his own events, multifunctional productions and his fun with his hedonistic artist’s life that he shares with anyone who has got the same sense of humour. Yes we are talking about the workaholic Ante Perry who is based in Dortmund. Ante loves living in hotels – especially at Lux 11 in Berlin. ‘There is a warm atmosphere, top service and the rooms are well designed and beautiful. It’s always an experience spending time there.’ www.anteperry.com www.facebook.com/anteperry THIRTYTWO THIRTYTHREE LUX 11’S SHOES LUX 11 & ADIDAS ORIGINALS Lux 11 and the very fi rst adidas Originals flagship store right around the corner at Münzstrasse have been Mitte neighbours for many years. The Arthur Baker remix played on www.the-weinmeister.com is a timeless masterpiece. 5_Visage / Fade To Grey Yes, we love the 80s. You will hear a lot of Eurythmics or Depeche Mode as well. 6_Rah Band / Clouds Across The Moon The perfect soundtrack for a late-night drink on our rooftop terrace watching the stars. 7_Daft Punk / Something About Us A ballad based on Oliver Cheatham’s‚ ‘Get Down Saturday Night’ – for the people coming home after clubbing enjoying a complimentary late-night snack. 8_Adele / Lovesong Great cover of the old song by ‘The Cure’ for all barflies. 9_Fritz Kalkbrenner / Facing The Sun Paul’s brother and the voice of ‘Sky and Sand’ of the ‘Berlin Calling’ soundtrack. Get your sunglasses! 10_M1 / Electronic Funk House music is our favourite genre – this tune is the blueprint for funky deep house. The General Manager of Lux 11 and The Weinmeister, Dirk Dreyer, used to be in the music business for many years. After working for major record labels, producing records and compilations and running a successful DJ career, he brought his passion for music into hotels. The music into lobbies is handpicked with love and knowledge – and Dirk is more than happy to welcome a lot of DJ friends and music biz colleagues as guests at Lux 11 and The Weinmeister. The 84-room hotel, located in the Mitte district, one of Berlin’s most dynamic areas, is aimed at business travellers from the fi lm, music, fashion and other creative fields, as well as leisure travellers. Its core philosophy focuses on rest, comfort, round-the-clock service and stylish rooms that highlight one piece of furniture – an oversized bed, which acts as a room within a room and suggests ‘cocooning’. Each room offers an Apple iMac instead of a TV, allowing guests a wider range of technology access and reflecting the state-of-the-art modernity of the hotel. Built from the ground up, the modern six-storey building has a sleek golden matte metal facade and is affectionately called the ‘golden cage’. Inside, there is an ongoing play of contrasts – serious and yet whimsical through the choice of ‘masculine’ colours and luxurious, soft materials. A rooftop area provides a bird’s eye view of the surrounding city. The design also features a BeautySpa, where guests can enjoy massages and cosmetic treatments overlooking Berlin. The ground floor Schwarz bar, named after the German movie actress Jessica Schwarz, serves a herbal liqueur made according to her family’s secret recipe. The restaurant serves traditional German cuisine with a modern twist. Breakfast is available 24-hours a day. The rooftop can be rented exclusively for events. FIFTYFOUR FIFTYFIVE THE WEINMEISTER – SCHWARZ BAR The Schwarz bar is named after the German actress and hotel regular Jessica Schwarz. There, guests and locals can mingle and enjoy modern interpretations of traditional German dishes. Not to be missed is the Schwarz liqueur, a herbal cordial made according to the secret family recipe of the actress. The ritual of inflaming the drink to let the spirits rise to your mouth and nose is a great start to the night, the 52 % alcohol in the schnapps does the rest. Jessica Schwarz is one of the most-liked German actresses. She played in movies such as ‘Das Parfum’ or ‘Die Buddenbrocks’. She runs a four-room hotel in her hometown Michelstadt and was a friend of The Weinmeister from day one. www.schwarzbrand.com FIFTYSIX FIFTYSEVEN BEAUTYSPA Anna and Sarah Arndt are mother and daughter. They run the BeautySpa on the 6th floor of The Weinmeister. They offer a wide range of massages, cosmetic treatments, manicure and pedicure. The BeautySpa is furthermore the only place in Berlin for Airbrush Tanning. Anna and Sarah work exclusively with Carita Paris products and offer the biggest choice of Chanel nail polish in Germany. Appointments can be made around the clock. Treatments can be enjoyed on the rooftop terrace as well. FIFTYEIGHT FIFTYNINE The Weinmeister is a place to meet and to make friends. Beck’s, Belvedere, Marshall Headphones, MTV, New Yorker, Urban Ears and many more have been throwing great parties at The Weinmeister. When will we meet you? SIXTY EIGHT SIXTYONE NINE ‘I DON’T MIND THE LULLABIES FROM THE MACHINES’ ‘I don’t mind the lullabies from the machines’ is written in large letters on a wall in Room 501 of ‘The Weinmeister’. This quote from the song ‘Evelyn’ by British band ‘Hurts’ is just one of various cool details in the room that The Weinmeister have dedicated to them. The ‘Hurts Chamber’ was designed by Hurts band members Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson and includes unique individual features. On the walls guests will find large framed black and white portraits as well as an official gold record for ‘Wonderful Life’ which Hurts gave to The Weinmeister. The collaboration came about when we fell in love with the song prior to the release of the single and received permission from the band to play the song on www.the-weinmeister.com In Room 501 you will find a large Apple iMac on which Theo and Adam have uploaded their favourite music and movies. Enjoy classic hits from Depeche Mode, Prince and Radiohead, or the fi lm ‘Blade Runner’ and even the World Cup final England – Germany in 1966 on DVD. In a large chest are books by the likes of cult novelists Brett Easton Ellis and Gerhart Hauptmann, plus there is a Helmut Newton picture book. Theo and Adam leave a souvenir, such as a backstage pass or a festival set list whenever they stay at The Weinmeister. The Weinmeister pays tribute to graffiti, street art and contemporary arts. The hotel’s entrance was designed by underground graffiti artist GYF5 and is definitely the most photographed door in Berlin. The staircase of The Weinmeister made a colourful transformation overnight. During a party at The Weinmeister for 2010’s musicweek, eight artists from www.paint-club.com gave the walls of the stairway a complete makeover. The party guests could witness the action with ladders, platforms, spray cans and tumbling paint buckets from the glass elevator. In the corridor of every fl oor guests can gaze at extra-large prints of Berlin-based artist Jana Hammermann. The acrylic and ink drawings of buildings, gates and bridges in 2 x 3 m large scale are amazingly detailed. www.janahammermann.com SIXTYFOUR SIXTYFIVE For over two years, Henrik Pfeifer photographed a variety of actors and models in Room 308 at Lux 11, located in Berlin-Mitte. Pfeifer’s laid-back manner of relating to the models led to an interesting mixture of portraits and nude photography. The best of these photographs have been collected in a 144-page book. ’I AM ALWAYS SEARCHING FOR A NATURAL FLOW ’ ‘I love to shoot actors with my analogue camera. For my portraits I always try to create a relaxed atmosphere so my models forget the camera. I am always searching for a natural flow and surprising moments. I love to play with the daylight and to engage myself with new surroundings and new people. Challenges push my creativity. And I like to surprise myself with what I am doing.’ ‘Room 308’ is available at our reception. www.henrik-pfeifer.de SIXTYSIX SIXTYSEVEN Henrik Pfeifer has produced 88 portraits, one for each room in The Weinmeister.
