In 2007, the Vikings began a new tradition of having youth football teams from throughout the state play an
exhibition game prior to Vikings home games. The program will continue to grow in 2008.
VIKINGS/NFL Grants
In partnership with the NFL’s youth football movement, the
Vikings deliver programs that emphasize football, education,
participation and sportsmanship. Through the NFL Youth
Football Fund, the Vikings also provide financial assistance to
many local youth football programs—including flag football and
tackle football leagues.

BERG—SELECTED NFL HIGH SCHOOL
COACH OF THE YEAR
Mike Berg, who coached Vikings quarterback Brooks Bollinger at
Grand Forks Central High School, was named the 2007 NFL High
School Football Coach of the Year. Berg was nominated by Bollinger
and became the second consecutive Vikings-nominated coach to win
the award, with former Cretin-Derham Hall Head Coach Rich
Kallok winning the award last year after being nominated by
Matt Birk.
Berg spent 28 of his 35 years of coaching as head coach at Grand
Forks Central and led his teams to 16 playoff appearances, three
state championship berths and guided his team to the 2005 state
title. Berg serves as the Football Chairman for the North Dakota
High School Coaches Association, Director of the North
Dakota Shrine Bowl and is a member of the High School
Committee of the American Football Coaches Association.
As the 2007 NFL High School Football Coach of the Year,
Berg was invited to attend Super Bowl XLII in Arizona as the
NFL’s guest. He received a $5,000 check and a $10,000 grant
was awarded to the football program at Grand
Forks Central.

Minnesota vikings cheerleaders
The commitment of the Minnesota Vikings
Cheerleaders (MVC) extends beyond the sidelines of
a Vikings game. In addition to energizing Vikings fans
on Sundays, these talented women commit their
time and passion to our community, appearing at
over 300 events each year. The MVC continue to be in
demand for corporate, community and charity events
around the state and beyond. This has even crossed
borders with trips to support our American troops in
Iraq and to work with International dance and cheer
teams in Mexico this past year.
The MVC also serve as role models for hundreds
of young ladies ages 5-18 through their Junior and
Senior Cheerleading Programs, as well as our AllStar team. Each program is specific to the age group
and all participants gain invaluable experience from
one-on-one coaching by the MVC. Other great perks
include MVC autographs, photos, apparel and tickets
to a Vikings game. The highlight, however, is the
opportunity to cheer in front of 64,000 Vikings fans
alongside the best cheerleaders in the NFL.

The alumni MVC are active in supporting the current
MVC, the Vikings and the community as well. The
A*Team, consisting of alumni MVC, perform on
the plaza on game day and have helped to support
Vikings events. The alumni MVC will celebrate their
official 25th season in 2008! These women loved
their time on the team and are proud to stay involved
in this special way.

that allows Vikings players, coaches and staff, local
celebrities, caring fans and chefs from some of the

relief in Minnesota.
HEROES DAY – SEPTEMBER 9, 2007

The Vikings dedicated the home opener against the Atlanta Falcons as “Heroes
Day” in honor of the victims and their families, the first responders and all
those affected by the 35W bridge tragedy. Several elements were included in the
tribute, including a moment of silence prior to kickoff. Vikings coaches, owners
and front office staff wore 35W lapel pins and the Vikings honorary captains were
Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek, Minneapolis Fire Department Chief Jim
Clack, Minneapolis Police Department Chief Tim Dolan, Emergency Management
Director Rocco Forte and Citizen Responders Rick Kraft and Jay Reeves. As fans
entered the Metrodome, Vikings Ring of Honor members and alumni players were
positioned at each gate collecting donations for the Minnesota Helps – Bridge
Disaster Fund. In addition to the donation of over 1,100 tickets to the victims’
families, rescue/relief workers and others affected by the tragedy, Vikings
ownership presented a check for $100,000 to the Minnesota Helps – Bridge
Disaster Fund.

Matt Birk named vikings community man of the
year for sixth consecutive year
Vikings All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl center Matt Birk was named the 2007
Vikings Community Man of the Year - the sixth consecutive year he’s been
so recognized. Since joining the Vikings in 1998, Matt has developed into the
community service leader of the team. In 2002, Matt formed the HIKE Foundation to
help others in need. HIKE stands for Hope, Inspiration, Knowledge and Education.
Since its inception, the HIKE Foundation has raised more than $450,000, which has
been used to fund interactive programming and education assistance. From 20022005, the HIKE Foundation awarded 12 renewable $1,780 scholarships to area high
school seniors.
In 2006, Matt added HIKE SCHOLARS to his programming, an initiative designed to
change lives generationally through education by providing at-risk children with the
Hope, Inspiration, Knowledge and Education they will need to make it through the
key transition points of elementary school, middle school, high school and college.
The new initiative reflects a NEW 12-year investment of nearly $500,000.
Aside from the HIKE Foundation, Matt continues to serve as the Vikings United Way
spokesman, Gridiron Geography spokesperson and consistently volunteers his time
to assist with other teammates’ community efforts.

2007 COMMUNITY QUARTERBACK
The state of Minnesota is fortunate to have thousands of residents who are committed to
volunteering. The Minnesota Vikings recognize one individual annually who goes above
and beyond all expectations to aid a community and make a difference in the lives of
others. This person is honored as the Minnesota Vikings Community Quarterback.
WADE SETTER - MINNESOTA D.A.R.E.
In conjunction with Mike Doss’ D.A.R.E. artwork contest assembly,
we named Wade Setter the Vikings 2007 Community Quarterback.
Setter, who served as the Brooklyn Park Chief of Police for 12 years
and currently is the Director of the Minnesota School Safety Center
within the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, earned the
distinction for his years of volunteerism with Minnesota D.A.R.E.

When Setter humbly accepted the $5,000 award he acknowledged
all of Minnesota’s law enforcement and D.A.R.E. officers. However,
like a good quarterback, Setter’s leadership with Minnesota D.A.R.E.
has set him apart. With the methamphetamine problem growing
throughout the nation, Minnesota D.A.R.E.’s training has been ahead
of the curve. Through Setter, Minnesota D.A.R.E.’s programming
regarding methamphetamine has been adopted nationally by
D.A.R.E. America.
“As a parent, I know that providing children the tools they need to
make good decisions is the key to helping them grow into the adults
of tomorrow, “ said Setter. “D.A.R.E. is a program that does just that.”
We are proud to have named Wade Setter our 2007 Community
Quarterback and thank him for his years of service protecting
citizens and promoting drug prevention!
Junior Community Quarterback
The Minnesota Vikings Junior Community Quarterback program honors high school and
college students who work hard in their communities to make a difference. To be eligible,
students must submit a proposal detailing their improvement plan for their nonprofit
organization. The winners receive a grant ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Once again, the
Minnesota Vikings had a record number of applicants. Every applicant was very dedicated to
making a difference and had great plans to positively impact their community organizations.
For example, 18-year-old Brandi Johnson helped refurbish the Lake Nokomis Community
School gymnasium with athletic equipment. Brandi attended elementary school there and
continues to volunteer her time assisting the students.
Community Student All-Stars
The Vikings Community Student All-Star program is for middle school students and
younger. To be eligible for a $300 grant, students must be actively involved in a community
nonprofit organization, have a plan to improve it and submit a proposal requesting funding
for their project. For example, 10-year-old Girl Scout Taylor Spreeman developed her own
“Sandwiches for Simpson” program. Simpson Housing Services is a transitional housing
center and shelter. As Taylor says, “A simple sandwich can stop hunger during the day.”

On Father’s Day last June, Jenni Greenway, wife of Vikings
linebacker Chad Greenway, organized the inaugural Vikings
Gridiron Gallop 5K fun run/walk at Lake Nokomis. Vikings
players, cheerleaders and members of the Vikings Women’s
Organization helped raise funds that benefited Minneapolis
Park and Recreation Board youth athletic programming. Jenni
was a star cross-country runner at the University of Iowa.

Community tour
In 2007, the Vikings launched a new initiative aimed at
connecting with fans, community partners and local leaders
throughout Minnesota while also providing an update on the
excitement of Vikings football. The tour kicked off in Mankato
during training camp and made stops in Willmar, Red Wing,
Rochester, Fergus Falls, Grand Rapids and St. Cloud.
Vikings Owner/Chairman Zygi Wilf, along with Vikings Vice President of Public Affairs Lester Bagley,
presented a $1,000 check to the United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha and Pierce counties as part of
the 2007 “You Made the Team” Community Tour. Owner/President Mark Wilf, Pete Bercich, Greg
Coleman, Bob Lurtsema, Mewelde Moore, Rick Spielman, Bobby Wade, Vikings cheerleaders and
Viktor the Viking all participated. Each community tour stop included a Vikings/American Heart
Association school assembly followed by a luncheon with community and business leaders.

In 2007, Vikings ownership reached out to a broad cross-section of Minnesota business and community
leaders and recruited them to serve on the Vikings Board of Advisors.
The Minnesota Vikings Board of Advisors meets regularly to discuss and provide feedback on Vikings
core issues, including the team’s sales and branding initiatives, stadium development project and
extensive community relations programs. The Board of Advisors helps keep the Vikings organization

opportunities for charities to benefit from the team’s success.
Donating merchandise and autographed memorabilia to
nonprofit groups is another Vikings tradition. Examples of
the events we support include: school fundraisers, charity
auctions, benefits for cancer patients, raffles and community
fundraisers.
To receive a donation, we must receive a type-written request
four weeks in advance of your event. The request must be
from within the five-state area of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa,

The Minnesota Vikings rich history in our state dates back 47 years. And, as the special bond between
the Vikings and the community has grown over time, so has the organization’s responsibility to
Minnesota. Nonprofit organizations throughout the state look to the Vikings for assistance—be it a
