Read on to find information about local organisations, services, courses and opportunities in the Shipley area for 2015/16. Information includes where to go and who to ask about everything from short beginners courses, higher level qualifications, advice sessions, arts and crafts, fun days out or getting involved in your local neighbourhood. Please note that some courses in this booklet have fees attached to them and some are available through medical referral only. Shipley College works in partnership with some local community centres to support you with this and provide training. These centres provide a local venue to access a range of Shipley College courses from IT to English, Maths, Childcare and many more. If you have a passion or a dream about working for yourself or starting a business then you should contact Airedale Enterprise Services (AES) – a free business coaching service. Airedale Enterprise Services is the Enterprise Agency for the Aire Valley and for more than 30 years it has been assisting new and existing businesses across the area. AES does this by providing business advice, workshops, business courses, office space, conference room hire and access to the Government’s Start up Loan programme. Whilst the AES office is in Keighley, David Humphreys is its community coach based in Shipley so if you are considering self-employment then an informal conversation with him would be a good first step. Supported by Bradford’s Kickstart programme David provides tailored one-to-one support and you can meet him in convenient local venues such as Shipley’s Kirkgate Centre, Windhill Community Centre and in Baildon and Bingley. Ramen Haire, a Shipley resident, receiving her Enterprise Award at the Bradford Kickstart Achievements Ceremony. The award was presented to Ramen in recognition of her success in starting her Accountancy Practice and the assistance she has given to other local people wishing to become self-employed. Come along and relax, meet friends, or take part in one of our courses. Dropin during our opening hours to meet the team or call us for more information. Qualified Youth Workers are on hand to engage young people in a range of activities such as cook and eat, music production, arts and crafts, team building activities and a young people’s management committee. Specialist sexual health services and careers guidance also run from the cafe. Shipley and Bingley Voluntary Services manage the Youth Cafe on behalf of a number of local partners including the Youth Service, Shipley Area Committee and other organisations. We understand that recovery is very personal; it can mean different things to different people. That’s why we provide tailored support to help our clients move forward and improve their mental health and wellbeing, in a way which can complement any additional support they are receiving through medical professionals or other services. support for people who are interested in returning to education. We offer a range of work experience programmes that can help people to develop self-confidence, motivation and skills. These are based in our six skill shops, which include: catering, conferencing and reception, retail, woodwork, horticulture, and animal care. Several of our skill shops operate as social enterprises, which means people gain experience in an environment which is supportive but also a real commercial setting. Some of our skill shops also provide people with the opportunity to undertake accredited qualifications. Unfortunately we are unable to take selfreferrals but if you would like support obtaining a referral please contact us. Once a person feels ready to return to work we help by finding work placements and volunteering opportunities. We provide support with writing CVs, job searching, filling in job applications and preparing for interviews. Each year, to continue delivering our valuable service we need to raise around £250,000 through fundraising and earned income from our cafe and charity shop. Volunteers play a vital role in enabling us to do this. We’re looking for enthusiastic people to become Volunteer Ambassadors, helping us to run community fundraising activities and events throughout the year. The £4.5 million state-of-the-art centre was opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2008 and is a first-class community facility. It caters for a wide variety of people and events. With a lift connecting all floors and facilities, it affords excellent access for people with disabilities. The centre is run by a team of staff and volunteers. Rooms Available For Hire We have a Community Hall that can cater for larger functions, a Lounge and a number of Meeting rooms which hold up to 25 people. The facilities are suitable for board meetings, children’s parties, sit down meals, exhibitions and more. We offer opportunities for personal development through a combination of formal and informal supported training and a creative space. These art and design courses are available to everyone over the age of 18 and run from September to July. We also run projects on site and out in the community because we believe creative activity is a vital contributor to good health and wellbeing. All adults and children from different cultural and economic backgrounds are welcome. To use the Woodwork and Pottery areas we also ask that you have some experience in these subjects. Volunteering We offer a variety of volunteering opportunities in a creative environment. Ceramics Ceramics is one of our specialities and this year we are running a varied programme of courses to suit everyone. Our programme is designed to provide plenty of opportunity to try something new or to develop and refine existing skills. We think that Hive creates an environment where experimentation is encouraged and supported and we love to see the work that our students create over the year. Woodwork Our woodwork facility is equipped with specialised woodworking machinery, power tools and hand tools. The workshop has had a major facelift, with new flooring, heating and furniture. We offer courses suitable for complete beginners and more experienced woodworkers. These include furniture making, basic DIY and specialist power tool courses. Textiles Our skills-based textile classes offer you opportunities to learn a range of practical and creative techniques. Our courses have emphasis on decorative techniques, sewing skills and using the Hive dye garden to create colour on cloth. You will be able to explore traditional and contemporary design work in a number of different ways. Visual Arts This year we are offering visual art courses in Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking. We have a number of opportunities available for the absolute beginner through to the most experienced student. Our tutors create an inspiring environment in which you will be encouraged to explore your skills and your creativity. Stained Glass Our stained glass courses guide you to design and create traditional and modern stained glass panels, exploring different methods including acid etching.
