Tom found it beneficial to have another palate on the trip and I found some incredible wines to come to Pettyjohns directly. Through France we traveled from Champagne, to Burgundy, Beaujolais, North and Southern Rhone, the Languedoc, and Provence. My rosés and Burgundies have already arrived, some have already sold out. Don’t miss the Saint Siffrein Chateauneuf du Pape, a steal for $38.99, and look for a GORGEOUS old vine Chateauneuf du Pape that will be arriving in time for Christmas. One evening Claude and Francis from Domaine Romarins served a lovely Viognier on their porch, I just couldn’t help myself, I ordered 10 cases to come here this month. Take advantage of my travels, these wines are not to be missed. In Italy we went from Puglia (the heel of the boot) to the Marche, Tuscany, Friuli, Veneto and Piedmont. I bought my favorites from every region I visited. The Piedmont selection in the store has grown significantly, check out the delicious Barberas and mindblowing Barolos. I’ve tried to make these wines easy to spot, they usually have one of my travel pictures on the shelf. Of course, you can just ask me, I’ll try not to talk your ear off. The sun is out and it is HOT! Its rays and the days activities have physically drained you. The fan is on but, it is only blowing around warm air. The only waves you see are heat waves. Your dog has only gotten up for water and to move to a colder location on the linoleum floor twice in the last week. The Weather person says “Tomorrow will be even hotter with no relief in sight!” Well, the weather man is wrong because Pettyjohn’s has all the relief that you need. Beat the heat with some cold beer at cool prices. Avery is on deal for the whole month of July at $7.40 a six pack in bottles and cans. With Avery IPA in tow you will be everybody’s friend at the next party. Take six cans of Joe’s Pilsner to the creek and sip the day away in the shade. Camping? What better to take with you than man’s best friend Ellie’s Brown in a can? White Rascal is sure to quench your thirst after a ride or climb at your favorite spot. The Karma is always good especially when you can drink it. And when you’ve had enough of summer try the Out Of Bounds Stout which reminds you the powder turns are right around the corner. All month at Pettyjohn’s drink and save with Boulder’s own Avery Brewing Company. August- Full Sail 6-packs $6.00 Nestled along the mighty Columbia River in Hood River, Oregon resides the Full Sail Brewery, Tasting Room & Pub. Full Sail has operated from this beautiful location since 1987, and has since become one of the largest craft breweries in the United States; amazingly, in light of all their success, Full Sail has held onto their humble roots by becoming an employeeowned business of 47 employees. Apart from being employeeowned, Full Sail has a respectable reputation amongst those in the know as one of the best bang for the buck breweries around. This August at Pettyjohn’s, Full Sail is our Spotlight Brewery of the month, which means all their six packs (IPA, Pale Ale, Amber & Ltd.) are on sale and will fly off the shelf at the agreeable price of $6! And check out the 12 packs of Full Sail Session at $10.16, check the caps to see if you can beat your drinking buddies in Rock, Paper, Scissor! First, this is another true quality line from a family that has been making wine in California since 1968; second, Bogle’s annual release of their Phantom should coincide with this promotion. To be honest, I don’t think I have to discuss each wine that will be on sale because they all fly out of the store at regular pricing. All fruit from the Clarksburg region just outside of Sacramento, each wine has vibrant fruit and is beautifully made. The award list is pages long each year. I discovered the Phantom while out of state two years ago. It is not only delicious, but an intriguing blend of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and a little Mouvedre. A very limited amount is made, it’s released once a year, and now I’m on it. I pre-order this now, and it should arrive in August. A big, black, ugly thing, I can’t get enough. This is usually around $16.00 per bottle and worth every dime. LOOK FOR IT ! For the next two months, come in and enjoy all that Bogle has to offer, at unbelievable pricing. I hope to celebrate the end of summer this way every year. Fold the dry ingredients into the egg mixture, then fold in the melted butter. Spread the batter into a generously buttered 9X13 inch glass baking dish. Bake in the center of a 375 degree oven for 30 minutes. When the cake is golden, transfer to a rack and cool. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, mix the remaining sugar with the peach schnapps. Stir in the peaches and let stand at room temperature for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cut the shortcake in squares and serve with peaches. Serves 8. Cranberry-Clementine Sangria A fun, refreshing porch-pounder and budget friendly! 2 cups cranberry juice 1 cup fresh squeezed clementine juice 2/3 cup sugar 2- 750ml. dry red wine Orange slices, cranberries, fresh raspberries, halved strawberries, and other cut up fruit In a 3 quart pitcher stir together cranberry and clementine juices. Add wine and sugar, stirring until sugar dissolves. Cover and chill for at least 3 hours. Stir in fruit before serving. Serve over ice. Makes 12 (6-ounce) servings. Featured Chardonnay Simply Pure Chardonnay $9.99 The name Paul Dolan has been iconic in California when it comes to organic wine production. He was Barney Fetzer’s partner with the Bonterra line, and has his own label in our organic wine section. In the 1980’s Paul and friend Phil Hurst joined a group of viticulturalists and wine makers in Mendocino County committed to organic and biodynamic farming. Today, Mendocino is considered the center for organic farming, and this is where Simply Pure was founded. With the help of Paul’s son Heath, and winemaker Virginia Lambrix, Simply Pure is made entirely of organic or biodynamic Mendocino fruit. It is crushed and vinted in an organically certified winery, and packaged using only recycled and sustainable materials. I tasted this wine a few months ago and felt it would be the ideal hot weather Chardonnay feature. This is the epitome of clean, crisp, fresh and refreshing Chardonnay. Even though Virginia has fermented 1/2 of the fruit in French oak and the rest in stainless, and with 1/3 going through malolactic fermentation the vibrant fruit flavors take the forefront. I had to order this weeks ago as Colorado didn’t have enough on hand, but it’s finally here. It’s not often you find this quality for under $10, enjoy this beauty of deal, and I’ll make sure we have the quantity. www.pettyjohns.com 613 South Broadway Boulder, Colorado 80305 303-499-BEER (2337) RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID LOVELAND, CO PERMIT # 36
