and exhibits to
bring clarity to
what some historians consider to
be America’s most
important military
victory: George
Washington’s triumph of allied forces
over the British at Yorktown in
October 1781.
This year in Yorktown—along the
sandy shores of the tidal York River
near the Chesapeake Bay—will be
special, beginning with timeless
attractions, such as:
The Victory Center, where visitors can “meet” Revolutionary soldiers, try on their uniforms and view
artifacts from the sunken British ship

I enjoy the company of someone who knows
how to play with a big dog. I was really shy
when I first came here, but everyone has
been so nice to me that I come and go into
my cabin whenever they ask me to. My
cabin is always clean, even if the latrine is
not available as soon as I would like it. My
favorite counselor is Miss Carolyn. She
brushes me and it just feels so good! The
other day I went down for a nap. I dreamed
I was singing soprano. I closed my one blue
eye and my one brown eye and woke up
with a higher voice. Gotta go now, it’s time
for another nap. This time I’m gonna dream
of beef. Maybe I’ll wake up with a burger!

Dear new Mom and Dad, my name is Scout.
At Camp Dog-Gone-UR-Cute there are not
enough laps to go around. I thought I would
get to be a lap dog 24/7. I’m cool with sharing a home with other little dogs, playing
with my toys and doing all of the other things
11 lb. Chihuahua mixes do, but I want my
own lap! I have to share now with 3 other
dogs in my foster home and it’s not how I
expected to spend my summer. I spent a lot
of time trying to be cute by putting black eyeliner around my eyes. I look like I’m wearing
a mask like an Indian brave. There are older
children at camp now and I like them, but
pre-schoolers would make me a little uncomfortable, so don’t send them to live here.
I have learned how to potty outside in the
fenced in yard and now I do that all the time.

Camp Get-A-Home! My name is BoBo and
it’s really fun here. I am a Sheltie and the
cutest guy in the whole camp. At least that is
what I tell myself when I look in the mirror
and see my red hair, black button nose and
big brown eyes. Today I wore a shirt with my
face on it and everyone stopped to admire
me. I enjoy staying in my camp crate and feel
really safe there. In the afternoon they come
and take us for long walks on leashes. I love
that. They put me in the backyard for some
playtime the other day and I did not dig out.

there are no jumpy small children around
me, and that my counselor lets me follow her

Dear Uncle Louie, boy Camp Good-Dog is
sure fun. Last night, because my name is
Mousse and I love desserts, I got to lick all
of the plates. Boy can I clean them up
good, too. Then we swam in the pool and
ran all around the yard. We played Frisbee,
too, but for the life of me I can’t figure out
why I would have to bring it back to them if
they are throwing it for me to catch! I like to
smile a lot when the human counselors
come to see me and they say I never met a
stranger. I would love to stay any place
where I would be loved and I especially like
to ride in a car. Riding is my favorite thing! I

drop the soda and just call me
a jerk, already. Just like Brer
Rabbit in the briar patch, I would not
have minded a bit.
From my earliest years I
dreamed of being
a soda jerk. When
the dream developed into reality
it wasn’t exactly
what I had envisioned.
The food-service business isn’t M.L. Myers
as glamorous as it
may look.
It’s darn hard work, but more about
that later.

Hi-ho, hi-ho
Every summer, growing up, my
mother would take my brother and
me to spend the summer with both
sets of grandparents in and around
Lamont, Okla., pop. 400.
Of course when farmers came to
town on Saturdays to trade farm products and swig a bit of the 3.2 percent
hops juice, the little village could
swell and swagger to 800 or more.
Lamont, Okla., during the Great
Depression had one of everything any
hamlet needed to operate. It had one
doctor, one banker, one baker, one
barber, one sheriff, one blacksmith
(my grandfather, Finis Goff), three
grocers and, of course, one drugstore
complete with ice-cream parlor.
It was the ice-cream parlor that
captured the most of my youthful
attention.
aroma of sweets of all kinds throughout.
It had the standard black-and-white
checkerboard marble floor and twisted-iron ice-cream-parlor chairs and
tables.
It also had a marble-topped bar that
extended some 20 feet, behind which
soda jerks plied their trade.
Somehow, by hook or crook, I
could always come up with a nickel
or two of disposable income on short
notice.
A cherry, grape or strawberry phosphate sold for 7 cents. (Drugstores
didn’t round off much in those days.)
My all-time favorite was the
chocolate ice-cream soda, which sold
for 17 cents. Nothing settled an occasional upset stomach like a frothy icycold chocolate ice-cream soda.
Slurping up the ice-cream scale,
the “black cow” (chocolate milkshake) and malted-milk shakes went
for 20 cents.
(Remember when you could watch
the soda jerk actually spoon the granulated malt into the special canister
and later top it off with a sprinkle of
cinnamon or nutmeg when it finished
spinning?)
With a quarter I could score a couple of huge home-baked cookies to
complete the treat.
me to work for nothing, but to earn
cold hard cash for such joy was a
bonus beyond my wildest expectations.
Fast-forward ten years. My family
had moved from Wichita, Kan., to
Houston, Texas, in the year of the
Texas Centennial, 1936.
Although my brother
and I always seemed
to have jobs delivering groceries or newspapers or selling The Saturday Evening Post and
Ladies’ Home

to door, my
first real job
came after I
turned 15
years old.
At that time
there was a
large ice-cream
maker named
R e t t i g ’s I c e

office on Louisiana Street near downtown Houston.
How sweet it was
It was cool with the delectable
Spin cycle
As I would sit, or rather spin, on
the bar stool, my little brain would
also spin while conjuring up images
of me, Jimmy Myers the soda jerk.
In daydreams, there I would be
with cocked cap and apron tossing
balls of ice cream in a rainbow arc
and catching them in a cut-glass sundae dish to the drop-jawed response
of amazed young girls.
I mean what job could possibly top
that? With all the ice cream one could
eat and serving happy friends their
favorite dishes, what was there not to
like?
That alone would be enough for

Rettig’s had ice-cream tentacles
stretching all over Houston, one of
which sat at the corner of West Gray
and Taft. That facility was only a few
blocks from where I lived.
Somehow I must have learned they
were in a hiring mode, or perhaps I
just took a chance.
In any event, one Saturday I rode
my bicycle to their main office and
filled out an application. They informed me that, before they could
consider me for employment, I would
have to obtain a legitimate Social
Security card.
Okeydokey. Immediately I made a
beeline to the nearest Social Security
office and applied.

Friday was payday and I was taking home $12 or so a week, which
was huge for a young lad in those
days.
My aim was to be promoted to
assistant branch manager so I would
make the grand sum 331⁄3 cents per
hour. Wowee.
That never happened. I do not recall how long I worked there, but it
was part of my last year in junior high
and throughout the summer of 1946.
There were a few high points, such
as when my dad would drop in unexpectedly.
Naturally he paid like any other
customer, but I could supersize his
order, although that term was unknown at the time.
Dad was enormously proud, as
always, that his offspring was gainfully employed.
The downside for soda jerks was
getting drowned in milk byproducts
painted on our aprons like a painter’s
canvas and running down our pants
and sometimes into our shoes by the
end of our shifts.
My wrists would ache from dipping the hard frozen ice cream with
the old-timey tools used in those
days.
Mopping-up operation
Speaking of price, my starting
salary was, believe it or not, 25 cents
an hour.
My hours were from around 4 or 5
until the store closed at 10 p.m. on
weekdays.
It usually took until 11 o’clock to
mop and clean up, so, counting 10
hours on Saturdays and/or Sundays, I
was putting in a 40-hour week or
more part time.
Dippity-do
After each dip we would slosh the
dipper in a water reservoir, but nothing helped much.
The lessons learned were that the
life of a soda jerk was mostly hard
manual labor with precious few
pinnacles of glory or ego enhancement.
My introduction into the foodservice business would not be my
last, but I learned some valuable lessons soda-jerking that would stick
with me like caramel syrup for the
rest of my life.
