COBBER MEN’S BASKETBALL GAMEDAY January 17, 2007 – 5:45 p.m. Concordia-Moorhead vs. St. Mary’s Memorial Auditorium GAME #15 GAMEDAY GAME NOTES Saint Mary’s University (310/27 MIAC) at Concordia College (212/27 MIAC) Ø Concordia comes into today’s game having lost its last three games. The streaky Cobbers posted a pair of wins before the losing skid. Ø Once again the Cobber season continues to be a tale of locations. CC is 23 at home but 09 on the road this year. That trend started a couple of years ago and Concordia now owns a 422 record on the road in conference games over the past three years. The Cobbers are 05 in the MIAC away from Memorial Auditorium in 200607. Ø From the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not category, both teams head into today’s game with a realistic chance at making the playoffs. Despite both squads stumbling to a 27 record in their first nine league games, both teams are only two games behind fifth place in the wild and wooly MIAC standings. With six teams earning a spot in the conference tournament, CC and SMU need only to make up a pair of games in the second half of the schedule. Today’s game could go a long way in helping the cause of the winner make a secondhalf run at a playoff bid. Ø Concordia junior post player Luke Linz is currently second in the MIAC in scoring in overall games. Linz is averaging 18.8 points per game this season and has scored in double figures in 13 of the team’s 14 games this year. He has also scored at least 20 points on six different occasions. Ø Cobber junior guard Anthony Boike leads the MIAC in 3point field goal percentage in conference games this season. Boike is connecting on 55.6% of his shots from behind the arc. He is coming off one of his best games of the season as he scored 14 points in the Cobbers’ 7766 loss at Augsburg on Monday. Ø As a team, Concordia is third in the league in 3point shooting percentage. The Cobbers are shooting 39.8% from 3point range in their seven league games this season. Concordia has shot better than 35.0% from outside the arc in their past four games. CC hit a seasonbest 53.8% from 3point range in their 6358 win over thirdplace Gustavus. The Cobbers are also third in the league in assists. Concordia is averaging 16.11 assists in their nine league games and had a fourgame streak of posting at least 16 assists in a game snapped on Monday when they had only 14. The seasonhigh assist total for CC is 24 against Hamline. Ø Concordia will play four of the next five games at home. After today’s tilt with the Cardinals, CC will host leagueleading St. John’s on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first half of the annual “Buck Day” doubleheader. They will then play at Carleton on Monday before heading home to host St. Olaf next Wednesday and Macalester on Wed., Jan. 31. Ø The Cardinals saw their seasonhigh losing streak climb to five with Monday's loss to Bethel. SMU's defense held the Royals to 71 points, the thirdlowest offensive output by a Cardinal opponent. Eric Lear (Antioch, Ill.) netted a seasonhigh 15 points in Monday's losing effort. Monday's 58point effort marked the sixth time in 13 games that SMU was held under 60 points. Ø Dan Cormier (Blaine, Minn.) and Brensley Haywood (Joliet, Ill.) lead the Cardinals in scoring, averaging 13.2 and 12.8 ppg, respectively. Cormier is also shooting a teamleading 70 percent (28for40) from the free throw line, while Haywood boasts teambests in assists (52) and steals (19). Haywood is the only player on the Cardinal roster to start all 13 games. Haywood has now started 40 straight games. Ø The Cardinals saw their road record dip to 15 with last Wednesday's loss at Carleton. The Cardinals, who snapped a 15game road losing streak with their 8987 win at Hamline on Dec. 6, 2006, have won just twice on the road in their last 26 games. Monday's loss to Bethel was just the second time in the last nine games that Cormier or Haywood did not lead the Cardinals in scoring. January 17, 2007 Memorial Auditorium Moorhead, MN GAME TIME: 5:45 p.m. SERIES: Concordia leads 6652 SERIES STARTED: 1929 LAST SEASON: Last year the two teams split the season series with each team gaining the victory at home. The Cobbers won the opener 7058 in Moorhead. In that game, Concordia outscored the Cardinals 3012 in points scored from inside the "paint" area as they were able to get quality scoring chances from close range throughout the final 20 minutes. Besides the decisive advantage in points from underneath the basket, Concordia's power game produced a gamechanging edge in free throws. The Cobbers made 10 more free throws than St. Mary's attempted. Concordia was 21of27 (77.8%) from the line, while the Cardinals went 10 of11 from the free throw stripe. In the return game in Winona, SMU was on fire from the outside and won 8160. St. Mary's shot 57.1% (12of21) from 3point range. Besides the above average shooting percentage from behind the arc, the Cardinals also shot 58.0% (29of50) from the floor, including a torrid 72.0% (18of25) in the second half in claiming the 21point victory. (11507) Bethel came into Monday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team boasting a gaudy 86.6 pointspergame scoring average. They didn't come close to that against SMU, as the Cardinals held the highflying Royals 15 points under their season average.. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Royals' 71 points were more than enough, as Bethel, fueled by a 3524 firsthalf scoring advantage, handed SMU its fifth straight loss, 7159, at the SMU Gym. The Cardinals matched the Royals shotforshot through the game's opening 10 minutes, but the Royals' hands got hot, and the Cardinals' stayed lukewarm, as Bethel outscored SMU 198 in the final 10 minutes of the first half to take an 11point, 3524, advantage into the locker room. The Royals quickly pushed their lead to 20, 4424, with a 90 run to open the second half, and SMU could get no closer than 11 the rest of the way. Eric Lear (Antoich, Ill.) scored a seasonhigh 15 points to lead the Cardinals — who shot just 40 percent from the field (23for57) and made just 6 of 21 3point attempts. Michael Batterman (Fond du Lac, Wis.) also scored in double figures for SMU (27 MIAC, 310 overall), netting 10 points, while Charles Meadowcroft led for Royal players in double figures with 15 points.
