Welcome at
Humboldt Graduate School
Willkommen an der
Humboldt Graduate School
The aim of the Humboldt Graduate School is to provide doctoral candidates
of Humboldt-Universität with an excellent framework for their work by offering
a broad and comprehensive education. Our trainings are mainly designed for
doctoral candidates of our member programs. If workshops are not completely
booked, individual doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität can participate
within the Last Minute Offer.
In the context of the Excellence Initiative we have been able to enlarge our offer
for workshops and events that are open to all doctoral candidates. We also have
special offers for postdoctoral researchers for the first time this semester.
Please note that we settle our trainings via the online course booking system
KuBuS this semester. KuBuS offers you a high standard service in the selection of
the courses, since the information on individual courses can be more extensive
than in this booklet.
We hope that we can make a suitable offer for each of our doctoral candidates.
Should you have special wishes of suggestions, we will be happy to respond. Let
yourself be inspired by reading our program to visit the appropriate course. We
wish you every success in your projects.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
This is not a writing course of the conventional sort. Our focus is on you, the writer, and on your
self-management during the writing process: How to motivate yourself to write? How to feel well
during the writing process? How to make decisions and plans you can stick to? How to get your
writing projects done in time? During the 1-day workshop you analyze how you approach your writing
projects and find pragmatic alternatives for the areas that need improvement. In a follow-up session
we reflect on the effectivity of the learned techniques and behaviours in everyday life. We discuss
practical problems found during the implementation phase and apply individual fine tuning.
The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful grant/
fellowship applications to various funding bodies (focusing on DFG, BMBF, EU, and other organizations if requested by the audience).
Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” in preparation for the course.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The seminar aims at preparing you for the thesis defense by honing your presentation skills so you
can argue your points convincingly and think on your feet during the question and answers session.
Responding to typical questions which may come up during the defense will also be practiced in
simulated scenarios. Furthermore the workshop will provide necessary information about the formal
procedure, the requirements and social setting of a PhD examination.
To apply for a job means to sell yourself, your skills, your abilities for professional growth. The first step
is to know them and to name them. The second step is to know how to describe your competencies,
your motivation and your personality, especially when applying for a job with either academic institutions, research departments in major corporations, international companies, public service etc. The
third step is to identify the latest trends and to develop a goal-oriented application strategy.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with the strategies for writing successful grant/
fellowship applications to various funding bodies (focusing on DFG, BMBF, EU, and other organizations if requested by the audience).
This seminar is especially designed for PhD students who are working on a thesis or research paper
in the field of mathematics. Participants will become familiar with various aspects of clarity which
are essential in producing logical, reader-friendly, concise articles. As well as examining the various
stages in the writing process, we will focus on the structure of abstracts, how to enrich one’s academic lexical repertoire and how to identify common errors which frequently arise in academic texts
in the field of mathematics. We will also look at how to draft rapid prototypes so that arguments are
organised in a coherent manner.
Participants will be asked to prepare a short “mini-grant application” in preparation for the course.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the first day are to understand the different kinds of scientific writing and their differing requirements, to know what some useful preparatory steps in writing are, to learn to develop
and keep to a plan for writing an article and to understand what is involved i ncollaborations with
co-authors.
Writing a review article in early stages of the PhD-project has several advantages. The aim of this
workshop is to provide you with the skills needed for writing high quality reviews. You learn to
organise dispersed information, to design knowledge maps and to plan text structures. Time-saving
techniques are trained and you are encouraged to start immediately with your writing project.
The objective of the second day is to understand how to achive the three essential elemanets of
scientific writing: accuranca of content; an interesting treatment; a clear piece of writing.
Please bring a copy of a review article to the workshop. Choose a review from your discipline, which is,
in your opinion, high quality.
Before the workshop participants will be asked to prepare an outline or draft of a planned research
article and to write a draft Abstract of the article.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
All academic writing is about more than just your research findings. Besides the content, every
author has at least two other aspects to deal with. First, language. Of course you want to write in
a clear, concise and elegant manner. Your mind is filled with great ideas, but whenever you write
something down, it is a world away from the perfectly crafted language in the articles of the journals
you read. Second, the process. Whenever you sit down to actually write something, you get a rising
feeling of panic. In this 1,5-day workshop, you will find out how to continuously improve your writing
skills and how to organize your writing process. We will talk about writing, reflect on our own writing
habits, share successful strategies with each other and work with our own and others´ texts.
To apply for a job means to sell yourself, your skills, your abilities for professional growth. The first
step is to know them and to name them. The second step is to know how to describe your competencies, your motivation and your personality, especially when applying for a job with either academic
institutions, research departments in major corporations, international companies, public service
etc. The third step is to identify the latest trends and to develop a goal-oriented application strategy.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Technologies to exchange data are advancing rapidly (e.g. cloud computing, Dropbox).
However, data protection laws remain and personal rights need to be respected. It is important to
be aware of potential threats exchanging scientific data. At the same time, it is helpful to know how
to benefit using state-of-the-art information-sharing technologies. The course aims to tackle both
aspects. Initially, an overview about national and international data protection laws will be provided.
In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated and tested by the participants. Furthermore tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange
are shown. The course concludes with a discussion round about scientific data sharing policies:
„Data hugging versus open access“.
The workshop is suitable for PhD students who want to improve their effectiveness within their current PhD project (at least 6 months experience) as well as for late phase PhD students who want to
plan an upcoming postdoctoral project effectively. In extensive hands-on exercises participants will
define goals and milestones for their individual project, create project definitions and work structures
and will practice to organize their working time by setting priorities and planning their workloads.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The main aim of this workshop is to develop a critical awareness of presentation techniques in order
to make informed decisions and optimize personal style. It is therefore essential that participants
receive not only verbal feedback from the trainer and each other, but also see themselves presenting
on video.
Do you want to have more impact when delivering a presentation? Do you want to deliver your message with more clarity, build more connection with your audience, or do you simply want to be able
to be more relaxed and ‘yourself’ when speaking to groups?
For those people who already feel comfortable presenting, we work to strengthen your confidence,
developing your ability to be more authentic and have more professional impact when you speak.
For those who experience nerves when speaking to a group, we look at new ways of transforming
them. What are we actually dealing with? How can we experience public speaking as energizing and
even enjoyable? This workshop is not about tips, tricks and techniques. It’s about building genuine
strength as a presenter – from the inside out.
CONTENT
• Asses own presentation strengths and weaknesses and try out new/ more successful communication strategies where appropriate
• Identify the main design rules of effective slide presentations
• Build on and practice the English phrases of presentation
• Develop strategies for dealing with unexpected or difficult situations, e.g. answering questions,
technical problems, audience management
• Develop confidence and enjoyment in public speaking
CONTENT
• Develop our ability to use eye-contact to engage with individuals and the group
• Allow ourselves to relax into the role of speaker/presenter and strengthen our professional presence
• Practice delivering our presentations in a more confident and connected way

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The participants get an overview of the German science system, of the doctorate, and their role as
doctoral candidate.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The first day of the course teaches you how to eliminate the typical reading mistakes which most people have internalized and maintained since primary school: regression, reading word by word, complete mental hearing. The second day entails the efficient preparation of the reading process and the
development of flexible reading strategies facilitating an individual approach to each text – taking into
consideration its character, degree of difficulty and your reading goal. For the special qualities of scientific texts there is an exercise at the end of the course where you can bring your own text examples.
How do I speak with journalists? How do I prepare for an interview? In this workshop the coach will
train you for your next contact with the press. We will concentrate on print media. You will learn how
to protect your rights and how to feel secure.
Participants will be asked to write one statement each on their own field of research and on the potential
outcome that might be of interest to the public.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
We usually think of leadership as a process of top-down influence from supervisors to their followers.
Yet, for an effective collaboration, followers should be actively involved in the leadership process.
Having an effective and attractively-designed academic poster is only the beginning of the story –
you also need the skills to present it, and talk about your research in an engaging and professional
manner. Effective and concise presentation of your research results or field of study is what will make
you stand out to potential partners, employers or financial backers.
This seminar will teach you how to lead effectively from your position as a Ph.D. student.
This two-part course offer includes one day of interactive workshop. Through a combination of theoretical input and practical exercises you will learn to apply a number of helpful tools that enhance
your interaction with your supervisor.

OBJECTIVES
Inventions, patents and copyrights are not usually the areas with which one is dealing as a doctoral

Good Scientific Practice is an attitude of mind that becomes an attitude to work. It is about the way
in which research is planned and conducted, the results are recorded and reported, and the fruits
of research are disseminated, applied and exploited. It allows ready verification of the quality and
integrity of data, transparent basis for the investigation of allegations.
Do you actually know your research field exactly or are there findings in this field on which you have
not stumbled? Is it worth to continue the research work if there are already patents on this issue?
Enquiries in patent databases are quite helpful to determine whether the chosen topic could actually
be a new contribution to science. What are the rights of PhD-Candidates on intellectual properties?
Did you know that the rights of Doctoral Candidates with a Scholarship might be different to those
who are employed by the university?
CONTENT
The full-day workshop, that will be split for researchers of the natural and life sciences and the humanity and social sciences, will give an introduction to the subject of intellectual property.
The protection on right areas of patents and copyright will be introduced by guest speakers from the
European Patent Office, Patent attorneys and lawyers, who are experts in the field of copyright and
software protection.
The exact date and schedule of the event will be announced via the online booking system “KuBuS”

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
This workshop is designed for young academics who already have a good level of experience in presenting their research and who want to prepare for future career steps weather they continue in academia or enter the private sector. All participants will give their presentation in front of their fellows.
After the workshop, participants have a clear, realistic impression about their individual strengths
and about aspects they should work on to become more successful in communicating their research.
All participants should bring a 5 to 7 minute presentation (including slides) about their current area of research.
Please bring a copy of a review article to the workshop. Choose a review from your discipline, which is, in
your opinion, high quality.

How do I speak with journalists? How do I prepare for an interview? In this workshop the coach will

Although introversion and extroversion are well known and widely used in personality tests, there is
no training that helps academics apply these attributes to their professional communication.
Introverted and extroverted persons, however, have very different ways of communicating. In academic settings, both personality types face their own challenges: This workshop addresses these issues for the first time in Germany and is unique in its design. It helps young scientists to understand
both their individual advantages and their needs as introverts or extroverts and to cope with specific
communication challenges that come with their own personality type or with the preferences of their
communication partners. A special focus on gender role expectations and self-perception is added.
Participants will be asked to write one statement each on their own field of research and on the potential
outcome that might be of interest to the public.

Career Mentoring
for Doctoral Candidates
Karriere-Mentoring für
DoktorandInnen
Peer Mentoring
One-to-One Mentoring
Peer Mentoring
One-to-One Mentoring
The Peer Mentoring Program is designed for
doctoral candidates in our member programs
after 1 to 1.5 years of PhD studies and still
undecided career plans. Peer Mentoring offers
a structured exchange with other doctoral
candidates which is a good possibility to gather
knowledge on appropriate occupational fields.
It is also a way of making candidates aware of
their own skills and preferences, and encouraging mutual support.
The One-to-One Mentoring Program is designed for doctoral candidates in our member
programs after 1.5 to 2 years of PhD studies
with a broad yet clear aim. One-to-One Mentoring is based on interaction between an experienced professional in a chosen career field and
a doctoral candidate. One-to-One Mentoring
supports doctoral candidates in their transition
from their current position to their next career
phase.

Coaching
Conflict Consultation
Konfliktsprechstunde
Individual Coaching
Einzelcoaching
Conflict Consultation
Konfliktsprechstunde
A doctoral candidate may encounter particular
challenges while writing his or her PhD thesis,
especially during the final stages. Coping with
stress or frustration as well as time management could become increasingly difficult and it
might lead to a writer’s block or conflicts within
a team. In such situations, individual coaching
could be beneficial.
The relationship between doctoral candidates
and their supervisors is usually very positive and
based on trust. However, this does not mean
that there will never be situations, in which
opinions can differ fundamentally, so much so
that it might be helpful to consult an external
party. To help solve such issues, regular conflict
consultation hours are offered for each doctoral
candidate of the Humboldt-Universität. This
way, serious problems between the doctoral
candidate and the supervisor may be resolved
in advance, so that the basis for continuing to
work together constructively can be re-established. These consultation hours will be offered
by trained mediators and are free of charge.
Graduate School. Die Inanspruchnahme dieser
Leistungen ist kostenfrei.
Coaching is a method of consulting with a
focus on development and addressed to those,
who seek to improve their way of approaching
challenges.
The aim is to observe the situation closely
so that the doctoral candidate is inspired to
develop a specific plan of action.
The focus of coaching is not to discuss the
questions concerning the subject matter or to
provide informed advice but rather lies with
communication and the process of reflection.
The Humboldt Graduate School works with
coaches, who have gained various experiences
in the field of academia and are therefore
especially suited to help doctoral candidates.
A doctoral coaching usually comprises three to
five meetings.
The consultation hour will be held at the
Humboldt Graduate School, Luisenstraße 56 in
Berlin- Mitte, or – if necessary – it can be held in
Adlershof as well.
The consultation hour usually takes place once
a week. Please make sure to register first via
e-mail (hgs-consultation@hu-berlin.de) or telephone: 030-2093-1702 or 0172-2357086
(Dr. Regina von Schmeling). Upon registering
you be will informed about the time and room
number for the consultation. Complete confidentially is promised.
Die Sprechstunde findet in der Humboldt Graduate School, Luisenstraße 56 in Berlin-Mitte
oder – bei entsprechendem Bedarf – auch in
Adlershof statt.
Die Sprechstunde ist einmal wöchentlich. Bitte
Schmeling) an. Mit der Anmeldung erfahren Sie
Zeit und Raum der Sprechstunde.

German Courses for
Doctoral Candidates of
Humboldt Graduate School
In addition to the courses provided by the Humboldt Graduate School the ZE Language Centre of
Humboldt-Universität is offering term-accompanying courses especially tailored to PhD Students.
OBJECTIVES
Although introversion and extroversion are well known and widely used in personality tests, there is
no training that helps academics apply these attributes to their professional communication. Introverted and extroverted persons, however, have very different ways of communicating. In academic
settings, both personality types face their own challenges: This workshop addresses these issues
for the first time in Germany and is unique in its design. It helps young scientists to understand
both their individual advantages and their needs as introverts or extroverts and to cope with specific
communication challenges that come with their own personality type or with the preferences of their
communication partners. A special focus on gender role expectations and self-perception is added.
