Besides the content, every author has at least two other aspects to deal with. First, language. Of course you want to write in a clear, concise and elegant manner. Your mind is filled with great ideas, but whenever you write something down, it is a world away from the perfectly crafted language in the articles of the journals you read. Second, the process. Whenever you sit down to actually write something, you get a rising feeling of panic. In this 1,5-day workshop, you will find out how to continuously improve your writing skills and how to organize your writing process. We will talk about writing, reflect on our own writing habits, share successful strategies with each other and work with our own and others´ texts. To apply for a job means to sell yourself, your skills, your abilities for professional growth. The first step is to know them and to name them. The second step is to know how to describe your competencies, your motivation and your personality, especially when applying for a job with either academic institutions, research departments in major corporations, international companies, public service etc. The third step is to identify the latest trends and to develop a goal-oriented application strategy. However, data protection laws remain and personal rights need to be respected. It is important to be aware of potential threats exchanging scientific data. At the same time, it is helpful to know how to benefit using state-of-the-art information-sharing technologies. The course aims to tackle both aspects. Initially, an overview about national and international data protection laws will be provided. In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated and tested by the participants. Furthermore tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange are shown. The course concludes with a discussion round about scientific data sharing policies: „Data hugging versus open access“. The workshop is suitable for PhD students who want to improve their effectiveness within their current PhD project (at least 6 months experience) as well as for late phase PhD students who want to plan an upcoming postdoctoral project effectively. In extensive hands-on exercises participants will define goals and milestones for their individual project, create project definitions and work structures and will practice to organize their working time by setting priorities and planning their workloads. It is therefore essential that participants receive not only verbal feedback from the trainer and each other, but also see themselves presenting on video. Do you want to have more impact when delivering a presentation? Do you want to deliver your message with more clarity, build more connection with your audience, or do you simply want to be able to be more relaxed and ‘yourself’ when speaking to groups? For those people who already feel comfortable presenting, we work to strengthen your confidence, developing your ability to be more authentic and have more professional impact when you speak. For those who experience nerves when speaking to a group, we look at new ways of transforming them. What are we actually dealing with? How can we experience public speaking as energizing and even enjoyable? This workshop is not about tips, tricks and techniques. It’s about building genuine strength as a presenter – from the inside out. CONTENT • Asses own presentation strengths and weaknesses and try out new/ more successful communication strategies where appropriate • Identify the main design rules of effective slide presentations • Build on and practice the English phrases of presentation • Develop strategies for dealing with unexpected or difficult situations, e.g. answering questions, technical problems, audience management • Develop confidence and enjoyment in public speaking CONTENT • Develop our ability to use eye-contact to engage with individuals and the group • Allow ourselves to relax into the role of speaker/presenter and strengthen our professional presence • Practice delivering our presentations in a more confident and connected way TRAINER Millie Baker studied English and German philology and received her Master of Arts degree from the University of Heidelberg. The second day entails the efficient preparation of the reading process and the development of flexible reading strategies facilitating an individual approach to each text – taking into consideration its character, degree of difficulty and your reading goal. For the special qualities of scientific texts there is an exercise at the end of the course where you can bring your own text examples. How do I speak with journalists? How do I prepare for an interview? In this workshop the coach will train you for your next contact with the press. We will concentrate on print media. You will learn how to protect your rights and how to feel secure. Participants will be asked to write one statement each on their own field of research and on the potential outcome that might be of interest to the public. Yet, for an effective collaboration, followers should be actively involved in the leadership process. Having an effective and attractively-designed academic poster is only the beginning of the story – you also need the skills to present it, and talk about your research in an engaging and professional manner. Effective and concise presentation of your research results or field of study is what will make you stand out to potential partners, employers or financial backers. This seminar will teach you how to lead effectively from your position as a Ph.D. student. This two-part course offer includes one day of interactive workshop. Through a combination of theoretical input and practical exercises you will learn to apply a number of helpful tools that enhance your interaction with your supervisor. Nevertheless it can be very helpful to be better informed about these issues. Adam S. Wilkins 05. – 06.12.2013, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Luisenstr. 56, Seminar Room 220 Candidates in all years of PhD studies Good Scientific Practice is an attitude of mind that becomes an attitude to work. It is about the way in which research is planned and conducted, the results are recorded and reported, and the fruits of research are disseminated, applied and exploited. It allows ready verification of the quality and integrity of data, transparent basis for the investigation of allegations. Do you actually know your research field exactly or are there findings in this field on which you have not stumbled? Is it worth to continue the research work if there are already patents on this issue? Enquiries in patent databases are quite helpful to determine whether the chosen topic could actually be a new contribution to science. What are the rights of PhD-Candidates on intellectual properties? Did you know that the rights of Doctoral Candidates with a Scholarship might be different to those who are employed by the university? CONTENT The full-day workshop, that will be split for researchers of the natural and life sciences and the humanity and social sciences, will give an introduction to the subject of intellectual property. The protection on right areas of patents and copyright will be introduced by guest speakers from the European Patent Office, Patent attorneys and lawyers, who are experts in the field of copyright and software protection. Coping with stress or frustration as well as time management could become increasingly difficult and it might lead to a writer’s block or conflicts within a team. In such situations, individual coaching could be beneficial. Die Promotion kann für den Doktoranden oder die Doktorandin – besonders in der Abschlussphase – eine ganz spezielle Herausforderung sein. Stressresistenz, Frustrationstoleranz oder Zeitmanagement können ins Wanken geraten und es ist nicht auszuschließen, dass Schreibblockaden oder Konflikte im Team auftreten. In solchen Situationen kann individuelles Coaching (Einzelcoaching) hilfreich sein. The relationship between doctoral candidates and their supervisors is usually very positive and based on trust. However, this does not mean that there will never be situations, in which opinions can differ fundamentally, so much so that it might be helpful to consult an external party. To help solve such issues, regular conflict consultation hours are offered for each doctoral candidate of the Humboldt-Universität. This way, serious problems between the doctoral candidate and the supervisor may be resolved in advance, so that the basis for continuing to work together constructively can be re-established. These consultation hours will be offered by trained mediators and are free of charge. Coaching is a method of consulting with a focus on development and addressed to those, who seek to improve their way of approaching challenges. Coaching ist eine prozessorientierte Beratungsmethode für Menschen, die ihren Umgang mit bestimmten Herausforderungen verbessern möchten. The aim is to observe the situation closely so that the doctoral candidate is inspired to develop a specific plan of action. The focus of coaching is not to discuss the questions concerning the subject matter or to provide informed advice but rather lies with communication and the process of reflection. Ziel ist es, die Situation genau in den Blick zu nehmen, Lösungspotentiale des Promovierenden zu mobilisieren und ganz konkrete Handlungsalternativen zu entwickeln. Fachliche Fragen bzw. Ratschläge stehen beim Coaching nicht im Mittelpunkt, sondern Reflexion und Kommunikation. The Humboldt Graduate School works with coaches, who have gained various experiences in the field of academia and are therefore especially suited to help doctoral candidates. A doctoral coaching usually comprises three to five meetings. Die Humboldt Graduate School arbeitet mit Coaches zusammen, die insbesondere im Wissenschaftsbereich über vielfältige Erfahrung verfügen und daher besonders geeignet sind, mit Doktoranden und Doktorandinnen zusammenzuarbeiten. Ein Promotionscoaching umfasst in der Regel drei bis fünf Termine.
