Welcome -- and Welcome
Back to FanimeCon 2010!
I
’m glad to be leading FanimeCon for my second year.
It has been a tough and complicated year for many
of us, but as we move forward to better times, it’s
fantastic to reconvene in San Jose and make it our home.
I’d like to thank you all for coming!
We’re back with more and bigger events to keep you entertained
throughout the convention. Our amazing lineup of guests brings
together old friends and new acquaintances. The dealers room is
stuffed with over 150 booths. New and exciting events are happening
alongside our traditional lineup of videos, panels, music, and gaming.
Our schedule is so jam-packed that we have waiting lists! We never
thought our “By Fans, For Fans” event could ever be this popular,
but here we are.
It’s not just about the events, though. This year, we asked everyone
a very simple question: “What brings you to FanimeCon?” The
answers were enlightening. Among the more frivolous reasons - “to
see cute girls / to see hot guys” ^_^; - it was amazing to see the excited
and poignant answers. Many of you cited specific guests and events,
and many mentioned cosplaying, but the vast majority mentioned
the most important thing: getting together with fellow friends and
fans.
Friends are a huge part of FanimeCon. We are, after all, a
convention-a place where like-minded people convene to celebrate
what they love, to see old friends, and to make new ones. We love
being known as a laid-back, friendly convention. It’s no surprise,
though: the all-volunteer staff is a huge group of friends, and we
take pride in running something that brings people together in
celebration of Japanese culture.
We really hope you have a wonderful time at FanimeCon 2010 and
that you meet some new friends, take thousands of great pictures,
get a million compliments on your cosplay, and enjoy all that the
staff have done. Now get out there and enjoy the show!
Much thanks to all of the staff and volunteers;
my wife and Vice Chair, Marie;
my right-hand man and Vice Chair, James;
and of course, You, the Fans.
Tony Figueroa
Chair, FanimeCon 2009-2010
4
Hidilly ho, FanimeCon
attendees!
W
e are very excited to present this year’s con as we have more events,
panels and all-around awesomeness than ever!
I’m really happy to be back and helping to steer this huge ship
we call FanimeCon with my brand-spanking-new husband and Chair, Tony
Figueroa and yang to my yin, Vice-Chair James Leu. It’s been a whirlwind of
meetings, discussions, meetings, celebrations and more meetings - and here we
are with some of the newest and latest ideas brought to you by our staff. I
hope you all enjoy some of our new events brought on by our Ambassador of
Awesome, Miss Sam Warriner, such as Rum Party and Speed Dating as well as
other group gaming events and attendee participation events (see our kick-ass
pocket schedule for more details). I also hope that you have time to come to
our Sweet 16 Party that celebrates FanimeCon’s 16th birthday. Woohoo, we’re
old enough to date other cons! Ok, that doesn’t make sense but you get what I
mean!
It’s thrilling to be back co-hosting this convention with some of my closest
friends - and hey, who doesn’t want to throw a huge party with some of your
besties? That’s why our convention is so great and unique because it’s a massive
“by fans, for fans” group effort put on by our wonderful and tireless staff and
volunteers. I hope you all enjoy the goings-on happening during the con as we
congregate here in San Jose and experience this fun and weird little world that
we have created. Go meet up with those friends you haven’t seen in a year and
see some of the things you’ve been waiting for like LM.C’s concert and avoid
the things you’re scared of, like some of the things shown in the hentai room...
eww....
So, without further ado, have at it, my FanimeCon brethren. Just don’t forget
to eat, sleep, shower and take a few pictures to remember this year by. Oh, and
when in doubt, go to an info desk, and if it’s not yours, don’t tape it.
Much love,
Marie (Waleedej) Figueroa
Vice Chair, FanimeCon 2009-2010
(and Con Mom)
Hello Fanimedom!
I
’m glad you could make it. Our staff has been working hard all year to pull
off another great event. I want to personally thank them for all the time they
have invested in making things happen. This is my second year as vice-chair
and I have enjoyed this year as much as the last. The collaboration between
the members of the chair team is one I cherish very much. I hope to be able to
participate in as much as possible this year so that I can enjoy the full experience
that is FanimeCon. I also hope to be able to see every one of you have a good
time with family, friends, volunteers, staff, and guests. Please have a good time
and I hope to see you around!

Keith
Burgess
Ryan
Gavigan
Keith Burgess has a range of skills that include voice
acting, script writing, art, and graphic design. His voice
roles include parts in the Street Fighter Alpha and the Neon
Genesis Evangelion movies, as well as Dead Leaves and Karas.
He also worked on the English scripts for Noein, Rayearth,
Read or Die, and Tokko.
Burgess is expanding his talents in artistry and
photography, working in graphic design and pin-up art.
He will be premiering his work at Fanimecon, creating new
artwork and prints exclusive to Fanime.
Ryan Gavigan is the host of Anime Hell, a “sort of a
visual disk-jockey kind of thing” containing “short clips of
bits from Japanese cartoons, commercials, movie trailers,
educational films, short animated films, pop culture detrius,
bleeps, blunders, and practical jokes.” The quick-paced and
free-flowing show has propagated to many conventions and
is dedicated to “celebrating, archiving, and popularizing the
bizarre and hilarious bits of human pop culture”.
Carl Gustav
Horn
Daisuke
Ishiwatari
Carl Gustav Horn is an editor at Dark Horse Comics,
where he works on the CLAMP “Mangettes” project and
graphic novels such as Clover, Neon Genesis Evangelion: The
Shinji Ikari Raising Project, The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery
Service, and Oh My Goddess! He has also contributed his
expertise to the American anime DVD releases of Patlabor
2, Gunbuster, Gunbuster 2, Jin-Roh, Royal Space Force,
Appleseed Ex Machina, and Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy,
and he provided commentaries about his field to Newsweek,
The Los Angeles Times, WIRED, and the Nihon Keizai
Shimbun. He is currently working on Shinjuku, Cardcaptor
Sakura, Chobits, and Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus
Apocalypse.
The driving force behind the Guilty Gear series of fighting
games, Daisuke Ishiwatari worked as the lead on the series’
story, character design, and music, and even voiced the main
character, Sol, for the majority of the titles. Ishiwatari went to
work for Arc System Works directly from school, hired after
an interview to which he brought a portfolio of just three
illustrations. He began his work with Arc’s earlier titles, but
became well known for his art and music with the release of
Guilty Gear for the PS1 in 1995 and the later release of the
Guilty Gear X for Dreamcast. Ishiwatari drew much of his
inspiration for the design of Guilty Gear from contemporary
manga and anime, in an effort to bring a flashier, stylized feel
to the fisticuffs found in most of the period’s fighting games.
A constant innovator, Ishiwatari is not content with just
working on 2D fighting games, and now with the RTS/3D
Fighting hybrid game Guilty Gear 2: Overture under his belt,
we are all waiting to see what he has his sights set on next.

Reuben
Langdon
Ric
Meyers
Actor, producer, director and stuntman, Reuben Langdon
is returning to FanimeCon. Unknown to some, Reuben’s
latest appearance has been one of epic proportions. Although
you may not recognize him, Reuben graces the screen in
James Cameron’s blockbuster movie, Avatar as a stunt double
for the movie’s main character, Jake Sully. He also performed
many stunts for various CG and live action characters in the
film using motion capture technology.
In the past Reuben has lived an exciting life providing
performance capture and coordinating motion capture shoots
for video games including Resident Evil 5, The Bourne
Conspiracy, Tao Fang, Star Wars Jedi Knight II, Castlevania:
Curse of Darkness, and Dead Rising. In the widely-popular
Devil May Cry series he was both the motion capture actor
aand the English voice of Dante in the third and fourth
installments of the game series.
Reuben’s career began in Japan as a series regular on the
Japanese superhero TV series B-Fighter Kabuto (also known
in the US as Beetleborgs Metallix). Later he moved on to
Hong Kong to work among the most famous names in the
Hong Kong film industry. Most specifically this included
Jackie Chan in Jackie Chan: My Stunts, Gen Y-Cops, and the
internationally renowned fantasy adventure The Medallion.
Currently back in the United States, Reuben continues
to share his talent on-screen. In the past he has appeared
alongside Sammo Hung in the Martial Law series and has
worked regularly on the hit TV show, The Power Rangers.
Reuben has also worked with respected directors such as
Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, and he is co-founder
of Just Cause Productions, an international multimedia
production house pioneering stereoscopic 3D techniques.
Currently, Reuben’s projects include the live action
adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel, Scott
Pilgrim vs. The World, which will be starring Michael Cera
and directed by Edgar Wright. The movie’s set release date is
August 13th, 2010.
Ric Meyers has been inducted into five worldwide martial
art halls of fame for his expertise in the study of martial arts. He
has inspired and appeared in martial arts film documentaries
for the Discovery Network, A&E, Bravo, and Starz Encore,
and he has worked as a martial arts film consultant for major
companies such as DreamWorks, Sony, Columbia, and
Tristar. Additionally, he has supplied material for more than
400 international martial art movie DVDs and holds both
an International Chinese Martial Arts Championship Gold
Medal and a USA Wushu Kung Fu Federation National
Championship Gold Medal.
Halko
Momoi
Toshimichi
Mori
Known as “Halko” to her fans, Momoi is a spectactular
entertainer. Her highly energetic and interactive Musicfest
concert thrilled FanimeCon 2009 attendees, some of whom
came from Japan and the East coast to see her. Fans asked for
her return with feedback such as “simply amazing”, “dream
come true”, and “best weekend of my entire life”.
Halko Momoi is also a musician, performer, composer,
voice actress, writer, blogger, and otaku. In addition to
starring in many radio shows and her own Akihaba-Love
Internet video channel, Momoi performs the theme songs
in many anime and video games, as well as the voices of
characters such as Feiris Nyannyan in Steins;Gate, Anise
Tatlin in Tales of the Abyss, Filia in Prism, Yurume Aida in
Yurumates, Sun Seto in Seto no Hanayome, and Komugi in
Nurse Witch Komugi.
Momoi also writes columns in numerous magazines,
maintains a blog, composes and produces music for herself
and other artists, collaborates on albums with Japanese bands
such as m.o.v.e and rap-bit, and founded label AKIHABA
LOVE RECORDS. Akihabara is a major shopping area for
electronic, computer, anime, and otaku goods in Tokyo, and
Momoi’s roots as the “Queen of Akihabara” strike a special
chord with high tech Silicon Valley anime fans.
Momoi’s concerts are famous for their high energy and
audience participation. She encourages her audience to stand
and cheer her on with glowsticks, as has been a tradition
in idol otaku culture for decades. Being a proud otaku
herself, Momoi connects closely to her fans for unforgettable
performances.
Toshimichi Mori is an apparent newcomer, having
only recently come in to the spotlight as the producer,
lead designer and scenario writer for last year’s BlazBlue:
Calamity Trigger and this year’s BlazBlue: Continuum Shift.
But Mori has been on the fighting game scene longer than
that, initially acting as the man behind the curtain for the
game design of the more recent Guilty Gear XX titles. Also
drawing from the sorts of styling more typically found in
anime and manga, Mori BlazBlue represents a whole new
fighting game from the team at Arc System Works, aiming
to not only bring something new to fans of Guilty Gear, but
also to appeal to new fighting game players.

Jonathan
Osborne
Gilles
Poitras
Jonathan C. Osborne was born in Boston, Massachusetts
and shortly thereafter became an anime fan. He has been
dubbed “The Man of 1000 Deaths” and was the first recipient
of FanimeCon’s Yamaga Award. Jonathan is greatly honored
to be attending his tenth consecutive FanimeCon this year
and will be up to his typical shenanigans. While getting killed
in many anime series including Cowboy Bebop, Fist of the
North Star and The Big O, he also played Broggy, Gaimon
and Shojo in One Piece, Masahashi in Paranoia Agent, and
William Morris in Gundam: 0083. A fun and friendly sort,
he’ll never say no to a Nutter-Butter.
Author and librarian Gilles Poitras wrote Anime
Essentials, the book on “Every Thing a Fan Needs to Know”
about Japanese popular culture, as well as “The Anime
Companion”, “The Anime Companion” 2, and articles in
Otaku USA and (previously) Newtype USA. He has given
presentations about anime at Pixar Animation Studios, the
Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Smithsonian, and
various libraries and conventions.

Hiroyuki
Yamaga
Mamoru
Yokota
Hiroyuki Yamaga is currently the Executive Director of
GAINAX. He started his anime career in 1981, when he
worked with fellow Osaka Geijutsu University students
Takami Akai and Hideaki Anno to create the opening
animation for the 20th Nihon SF Taikai (the Japanese
Science Fiction convention more commonly known as
DaiCon III). At the request of Studio Nue, Yamaga-san
joined the production staff for Super Dimensional Fortress
Macross in 1982. GAINAX was founded in 1984 after
beginning production on the animated movie, Royal Space
Force: Wings of Honneamise, which was released in 1987.
The movie became an instant cult classic as the legendary
“feature-length animation movie created by a group of
anonymous youth.” Yamaga-san has also garnered praise
for his screenwriting in works such as Aim for the Top! and
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. Mr. Yamaga
is currently preparing GAINAX’s new projects.
Mr. Yamaga has been a part of the FanimeCon family
since 1997 and was the first Japanese Guest of Honor for
FanimeCon. In 2009, FanimeCon used Yamaga’s ideas to
bring back and improve their “Meet the Guest Reception”
because Yamaga just loves interacting with the fans. In honor
of Yamaga’s continuing support, FanimeCon created the
Yamaga-san Award to celebrate other people who have also
significantly contributed to making FanimeCon a unique
convention.
Born on February 16th in Tokyo, Mamoru Yokota became
famous for his illustrations in the light novel series, Rune
Soldier Louie. Since then, his talents have extended into
producing and directing animation. In addition to doing
the original character designs for the anime version of Rune
Soldier Louie, Mr. Yokota has also worked on well-known
anime such as the Toei version of KANON, the theatrical
version of Air, Magical Kanan, DEATH NOTE, True
Mazinger Impact! Z, Macross Frontier, Astro Fighter Sunred,
and HELLSING IV.
Many video games feature Mr. Yokota’s art as well. Such
titles include Nonomura Byouin no Hitobito (Sega Saturn),
Doukoku Soshite... (Sega Saturn), Kaen Seibo -The Virgin on
Megiddo- (DreamCast), ELYSION (PS2 and DreamCast),
two of the games in series Katekyo Hitman REBORN!
(PS2), Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekidou (Wii), and Suzumiya
Haruhi no Chokuretsu (NDS). Mr. Yokota also works on set
designs and manga designs in various Japanese dramas.

Many have an idol among the Guests of Honor from
whom they would like to get an autograph. For those of you
with this desire, an autograph area will be set up for just that
purpose. This might be your only chance to get an autograph,

and stop by to share the memories and excitement. Also, it is
important to keep in mind that manners are key and a smile
is always welcome, so be polite and enjoy the moment.
Everyone loves pictures, but no one likes rude or oblivious
photographers. Before taking a photo, especially one you may
publish or post, be sure to ask permission. Also, while taking
pictures please refrain from blocking convention traffic, even
if it’s for a quick shot. No one wants to bump into anyone
in a high traffic area. Keep all pictures and picture taking in

• Anything that could be used in a menacing manner.
16
Prohibited Weapons
Permitted Weapons
Real weapons are not permitted.
• Live Steel - Live steel is not permitted. Live steel includes

edge. Dull weapons are considered live steel and are therefore
not permitted. Live steel in a scabbard or protective cover is
still not permitted.

weapons. No concealed weapons are allowed under any
circumstances.
All permitted weapons will be subject to

Carrying Weapons
•
•
In order to carry a weapon at the convention, you must
be in costume.
All weapons that are carried, either in hand or on/in a
costume, must meet the requirements to be peace-bonded
and must be peace-bonded immediately upon entering
the convention.
Peace-Bonding
Any staff, member, or guest who wishes to carry
a weapon as part of the costume shall have that
weapon peace-bonded. This is regardless of any
training, credentials, age, maturity, or status as a
general member, staff member, or guest.
WHAT: Peace-bonding is the process of approving a weapon
by designated staff (Rovers). The weapon in question will be looked at and marked to show it fits to
Weapons Policy standards.
WHEN: Peace-bonding shall be done as soon as possible after
entering convention-occupied space. This includes
all public hallways of the hotels, anywhere in the
convention center, and any space set aside for convention use.
WHERE: Peace-bonding is done by having a Rover member
examine the weapon in question to ensure that
the weapon meets the requirements and guidelines
set for by the Weapons Policy. Weapons that meet
the FanimeCon Weapons Policy requirements and
guidelines shall be tagged with a non-destructive
peace-bonding tag. Tagging the weapon tells FanimeCon staff that you have read, understood, and
agreed to follow the Weapons Policy and that the
weapon is approved to be carried at the convention.
FanimeCon staff would also like to note that any
projectile weapons, such as kunai or shuriken, may
be peace-bonded to an individual, regardless if the
item in question is made of plastic or other nonmetal material.
WHO:
Purchasing Weapons
•
•
•
•
•
All weapons sales shall follow Federal, State and Local
laws, statues, and regulations.
Weapons shall not be sold to minors.
All weapons sold shall be in a box, bag, or other device
rendering it ineffective and inaccessible and shall remain
within applicable laws for concealed weapons.
Weapons shall not be carried around loose.
If a weapon is purchased at an event, you shall immediately remove the weapon from convention-occupied
space; or, if the weapon meets the requirements to be
peace-bonded, you shall immediately have the weapon
peace-bonded.
During Masquerade
•
•
•
•
•
•
Staff, guests, and members who are participating in the
Masquerade and wish to use a weapon that is not otherwise permitted shall contact the Rover office for approval.
Any weapon approved for Masquerade but not allowed
for the general convention shall be securely transported
to Masquerade in a box, bag, or other device rendering it
ineffective and inaccessible.
Once at Masquerade, the weapon will be checked in with
the Masquerade Weapons Master.
When the individual participating in Masquerade is ready
to perform, the individual shall check out the weapon
from the Masquerade Weapons Master.
Once the performance is over, the individual shall check
the weapon back in with the Masquerade Weapons Master.
When Masquerade is over, the individual shall pick up
their weapon from the Masquerade Weapons Master and
securely transport the weapon back to their hotel room or
vehicle.
Policy Violations
Violations include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Carrying a weapon that does not meet the requirements
to be peace-bonded.
• Failure to have a weapon peace-bonded.
• Removing the peace-bonded tag on a weapon.
• Brandishing a weapon.
