canirando (trekking with
huskies) are available during
the rest of the year. So, don’t
wait another minute. Come
and experience the new
sensations the Haute-Loire has
to offer in Southern Auvergne!

see page 19
When I was on holiday in the
Haute-Loire, I was struck by the
infinite kaleidoscope of landscapes
the region has to offer. Each area has
its own distinct character…
What striking contrasts between
the “chlorophyll” green of the vast
volcanic plateaus, the wild river valley
of the Loire, from its source at Mont
Gerbier-de-Jonc and the upper Allier
River, which carves its way through a
terrain rich in character. I fell in love
with Southern Auvergne and became
one of its ambassadors. You will never
forget its distinct regional culture and
superb natural “playground” for
sports and outdoor activities.
The Haute-Loire
in Southern Auvergne
The pleasures of water
I will never forget the magnificent sunsets,
the intense colours and light that constantly
remind you that this department in Southern
Auvergne, located between the Ardèche
and Lozère, was once part of the
Languedoc-Roussillon.
What a pleasure to enjoy the rivers and
streams of Southern Auvergne. Their clear
waters, still or sometimes turbulent, are always
“bracing” and the region’s natural “jacuzzis”
invite you to linger, relax and enjoy a moment
of pure well-being.

Experiencing the Loire Sauvage
Experiencing the Loire Sauvage
We explored the wilderness paths of the Loire
River banks, in the heart of deep gorges lined
with basaltic walls, decked in springtime with
bright yellow broom. I can still smell the
Mediterranean scent of the Scotch pines under
the warm sun. We stopped to enjoy some trout
fishing. I am still grateful for Michel's helpful
advice, our guide, who knows the wild waters
of the Loire like the back of his hand. There
were still plenty of surprises and experiences
ahead of us. Off we went on a fascinating
journey through the land of the Loire’s first
castles. What an experience for us to ford the
Loire River and explore hidden paths in the
company of a guide with a boundless passion
for the Loire, its region and history. Here is an
exciting challenge for next year: travel up the
Loire by bike, along its beautiful mountain
roads...The Loire sauvage is worth the
effort...and everyone can experience it at his
own pace!

and what castles they are!

AN IDEA FOR YOUR NEXT STAY
Gorges and Sources of the Loire
From the gates of Le Puy-en-Velay to the sources of the Loire, we suggest a 4-day itinerary on
the GR3, the oldest hiking trail in France. In a unique setting, rugged gorges of basaltic rock
reveal the hidden charms of the last remaining untamed river valley in Europe, under the
watchful gaze of its first castles…During your hike, you will work your way up the Loire to its
source at the foot of Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc (1,551 meters high) and feel the thunder of its
roaring waters… 6 days/5 nights in 2 ** hotels and B&B, including half-board and luggage
transfer. Prices from € 339 / person (single room € 175 extra).

The Loire Sauvage by bike!
Why not try cycling along sections of the 300 km of picturesque roads
that wind through the Loire River gorges? Climb up to the Mont Gerbier
(altitude 1,400 meters). It’s a challenge within your reach… especially
since it’s downhill all the way back!

Forget about Blois and Chambord! In a
theatrical setting overlooking the impetuous
river, I paused in admiration before the château
d’Arlempdes, poised like a sentinel overlooking
the gorges. I learned that this is the first castle
on the Loire River after its source in the
mountains. What a discovery! Working my way
North, I came across the elegant castle of
Lavoûte-Polignac, the first castle in mint
condition! From the terrace of this nearly
perfect castle, perched on a rocky outcropping
with a breathtaking view of the Loire 45 meters
below, I contemplated grey herons and sheep,
resting peacefully beside the water…

TER train lines
An original way to discover the gorges of the Loire River
valley. From Aurec-sur-Loire to Le Puy-en-Velay you can
combine train and hiking or mountain biking along Europe’s
only remaining wild river valley. One to nine days of hiking.

We later learned that the landscapes of the
Haute-Loire had been shaped by almost every
form of volcanic activity. Three main types of
terrain offer evidence of this in a fascinating
display of rocks and forest.

splendour

AN IDEA FOR YOUR NEXT STAY
Tracking the Beast
of Gévaudan
Take a rugged mountain journey and discover the haute Margeride. Trails
over rocky terrain lead to Auvers where, on 19th June 1767, the mysterious
Beast of Gévaudan was killed after massacring at least 100 people. A
true story that terrified the local population in its day. There is nothing
to fear now. The landscape is sumptuous and you will be able to calmly
learn about certain local mysteries and, who knows, discover the real
nature of the Beast of Gévaudan... Star-shaped route, 4 days/3 nights in
Gîte de France B&B including half-board. € 198 / person (single room
€ 90 extra).
During our walks, we were delighted to observe red kites
and otters…and see trout and grayling jumping to feed
on flies in this angler’s paradise. We promised to return
soon and try our hand at fishing salmon, the king of the
river, which still swim up the gorges of the Allier after
migrating 5,000 kilometres!
Tourist train in the Allier River Gorges
Our children had never taken the train before. What a
first! For nearly two hours, we enjoyed stunning
panoramas, meanders, basaltic organs, rock formations,
picturesque narrows and rapids…and were impressed
by the incredible series of viaducts and tunnels.
• The “sucs” : nearly a hundred of these
formations, with round or slightly pointed tops,
are, in fact, craterless volcanoes,
• The “gardes” : between the Loire and Allier
rivers, a constellation of 150 hilly formations,
referred to locally as “guards”, offer unusual
panoramic views of the vast Devès plateau,
• The “dykes” : numerous rock formations in the
Puy-en-Velay basin contribute to the singular
character of its sites. Some were produced by
underwater volcanoes and severely eroded
when the valleys were carved out. Only their
chimneys are visible today.
To satisfy our curiosity about volcanoes, we took
full advantage of outdoor sites, interpretation
walks, hiking trails, various topoguides and
"spaces" dedicated to this theme...to discover
the main volcanic treasures of Southern
Auvergne

volcans, en toute liberté » available in French

National Conservatory of Wild Salmon
While visiting the salmon hatchery at Chanteuges, I
learned that in the past up to 100,000 Atlantic salmon
would swim from Greenland to the Loire River estuary
and then, those that had originated in the Allier, would
migrate to the spawning areas located at the source of
the river. Threatened with extinction, salmon have been
the object of numerous conservation projects over the
last few years..

Golf club du Chambon-sur-Lignon
A 6-km course with 10 water hazards
Golf public du Puy-en-Velay
A 3 km course played twice per round
Two holes in one
An avid golfer, I tested the 18-hole course at
Chambon-sur-Lignon and the 9-hole course at
Le Puy-en-Velay. What a joy to play in a
luxuriant and hilly setting, with the Mont
Mézenc, giant of the Cevennes mountain
range, in the background. I often took my eye
off the ball to admire the view...At Le Puy-enVelay it is the 360° panoramic view of this
unusual town, referred to by some as the
“inland Mont Saint-Michel”, that I will never
forget.

A mountainous department between the
Ardèche and Lozère, the Haute-Loire is a prime
fishing area for anglers. A few reasons you’ll be
“hooked”…
- 3,500 km of streams, most in Category 1
- 15-day carte vacances fishing permit
- permits are recognised by neighbouring
départements, allowing you complete
freedom of movement
Fishing for brown trout or graylings in the
Haute-Loire remains a wonderful memory for me.
The Loire sauvage and haut Allier areas offer
densely populated waters as well as a wide variety
of rivers and babbling brooks. There is something
for every angler, no matter what your fishing style !
I will never forget the unusual atmosphere and
setting of the lac du Bouchet, open to the “general
public” for fishing from January to August and
sportsment from September to December. I will
always remember our fishing parties in Southern
Auvergne with my brother and grandfather that
often started at daybreak. Of course, we didn't
catch a wink of sleep the night before, lying awake
and dreaming of all the fish we’d catch. Minnows,
gudgeons and bleak are still very common in the
clear waters of Southern Auvergne and continue
to delight my children today.

IDÉE DE SÉJOUR
Pech’aventure
in the Haut-Allier
Come and fish in secluded waters where the Allier River has carved out
a unique, grandiose site with deep gorges and breathtaking views. For
two days in the company of Steeve, fishing instructor, and Emmanuel,
canoeing instructor, you can glide down these magnificent gorges to
fish in the best spots, far away from other anglers. At the end of the
day, after your last “cast” , you can camp on the banks of the river and
reminisce about the day’s catch. 2 days/ 1 night, including a picnic
lunch and fishing gear, € 280 / person.

Charming Villages
Lavaudieu
Four villages listed among the
“most beautiful villages in
France”!
The cloister of the former Abbey of Lavaudieu
Arlempdes :
A remarkable site! The village lies at the foot of
the ruins of the château d’Arlempdes, the first
castle on the banks of the Loire! Remains of
the medieval fortress stand watch over the
gorges...
Moudeyres and Bigorre
Located in a rural setting on
the vast “chlorophyll” green
plateaus of Mézenc, these
two typical villages are worth
seeing. You'll find the last
thatched houses in Southern
Auvergne.
We didn’t regret our trip to the quiet village
of Lavaudieu. We really appreciated its
Romanesque cloister (the only perfectly
intact example in Auvergne), with its
capitals, arches, columns and pebble mosaic
floors. We lingered for quite a while and left
with a wonderful peaceful feeling…
Moudeyres
Notre-dame du Puy-en-Velay
cathedral
Visiting the Cathedral was one of the high
points of our stay. This massive building is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site and visiting its
cloister, one of the most beautiful in Europe,
is a must.
Pradelles :
This village, rich in history, near the Naussac
dam and the gorges of the Allier River, offers a
panoramic view of the Cévennes and
Margeride mountain ranges.
Lavaudieu :
This peaceful village is located between the
gorges of the Allier River and the forests of the
Livradois. It is built around a former
Benedictine abbey on the banks of the
Senouire River. This remarkable complex
houses the only intact Romanesque cloister in
Auvergne.
Saint-Julien Basilica in Brioude
The cloister of the former Abbey
of Lavaudieu
Blesle :
In the valley of the Alagon River, at the border
between the Haute-Loire and Cantal, the
charming village of Blesle surprised us with its
magnificent half-timber houses.

Saint-Julien Basilica in Brioude
I discovered an immense Romanesque
church (the largest in Auvergne). I stayed
much longer than planned, gazing at its
polychrome stones, its singular floor, a
mosaic of polychrome pebbles, and its wide
variety of capitals…
Saint-Michel chapel in
Le Puy-en-Velay (Aiguilhe)
For the children, this was their most
powerful “memory” of the Puy-en-Velay.
What could be hidden inside this chapel,
perched atop a volcanic chimney 82 meters
high?

Lafayette, hero of the Old
World and the New
The Haute-Loire is the proud site of
Chavaniac-Lafayette, the birthplace of
the famous General Gilbert de Lafayette
(1757 – 1834), hero of the American War
of Independence and defender of
Liberty. In his extraordinary battle for
Human Rights, Lafayette left an indelible
mark on the pages of History, both as a
soldier and a politician. Lafayette was
awarded the title of honorary citizen of
the United States. Only four historical
figures have been awarded this honour
over the last 200 years! Son of the
Haute-Loire, a man with an
extraordinary destiny, Lafayette crossed
the paths of many great names in
history: Mirabeau, Louis XVI and MarieAntoinette, Necker, Chateaubriand,
Napoleon, Washington, Franklin...

This series of concerts features a
uniquely creative and eclectic
programme that never ceases to
surprise. Baroque and classical music,
Latino, salsa, gypsy, rhythm & blues,

Last two weeks of August - 12 days
A great moment of music and emotion
for us! The Chaise-Dieu Festival is held in
the Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu, inside an
authentic cathedral with incomparable
acoustics. Surrounded by the Abbey
forests, it includes 144 solid oak stalls,
superb 16th-century Flemish tapestries
and an exceptional mural: the “Dance of
Death”. Recently, internationally
renowned sacred and profane works
have also been produced in new venues
among the many cultural and religious
sites in the Haute-Loire.
The castle we discovered had been
considerably remodelled several times
over the centuries. This rustic home,
although it does not look like a fortress,
has retained the quiet elegance of the
“simple country castle of a great man”.
To facilitate visits of the interior, the
Lafayette Memorial Foundation has
recently created a museographic tour
to improve understanding of the site’s
historic significance.

Ideal for mountain bike
enthusiasts
We enjoyed short outings and
longer rides and made the most
of the varied scenery on offer:
wild open landscapes,
undulating plains, fascinating
deep forests, mountain ridges,
steep ravines, rustic villages,
medieval ruins, rivers and streams
with babbling, clear waters,
sunsets…
From morning to night,
wheels are turning at
Chomelix…
The Centre VTT, Multi-Activités et
Relais Résidence in Chomelix
proposes a network of 400 km of
signposted circuits, maintained
and approved by the FFC (French
Cycling Federation). We didn’t
know, but with the “Au Pays de
Craponne” detailed topoguide,
we found some superb rides and
on our return to the centre, we
were offered a choice of several
relaxing activities: Jacuzzi,
hammam and sauna are all
available in this ultra-modern
centre, which can accommodate
84 people. Spread the word…
Three mountain bike
topoguides – something
for everyone
• Le Velay des Trois Rivières :
700 km of signposted routes, 39
circuits from 9 to 44 km (French
Cycling Federation label). The
circuits are in the northeast of the
region, in an area called “Le Velay
des Trois Rivières”.
• Parc Naturel Livadrois Forez :
A 230-km circuit (5 or 7 days)
around the region, part of which
is in the Livradois-Forez Regional
Natural Park in the Haute-Loire.
• Circuits VTT au Pays de
Craponne : 400 km of
signposted routes (20 French
Cycling Federation marked
circuits) between the Loire and
the Ance, through forests and
gorges.

AN IDEA FOR YOUR NEXT STAY
Canoe trips
in the Haut-Allier
White water sports
Raft, kayak, canoe and hot-dog enthusiasts are invited to come and“test”
the Allier from April to October, a turbulent river in its upper parts, whose
waters cascade into deep gorges. The Loire however is easier to navigate
by kayak, canoe or hot-dog. Its calm waters on entering the Haute-Loire
flow faster as they pass through a series of deep gorges.
The Allier, an ideal place
for whitewater sports!
One of the remaining major untamed rivers in Europe, the Allier is without doubt the
most interesting river to navigate by canoe. Leaving from Prades, during this three-day
self-guided canoe trip, over a distance of almost 50 km, canoeists will pass hill-side
villages, sand and pebble beaches, navigate meanders and rapids … 3 days/2 nights
in a ** hotel and 3 épis B&B, including half-board, loan of equipment and topoguide,
necessary transport and initiation at the start of the circuit, luggage transfer.
€185 / person (single room €39 extra).
Reservations : +33 (0) 471 07 41 65
www.auvergnevacances.com
Confirmed kayak or canoe enthusiasts may
choose the deep, wooded parts between SaintEtienne-du-Vigan, Chapeauroux and Pont
d’Alleyras, or between Monistrol d’Allier and
Prades. Beginners can try out a hot-dog or canoe
between Prades, Langeac and Brioude, where the
water is calmer and the views superb. With a
helmet, wetsuit, life jacket, trainers, paddles, you
will undergo a complete change of appearance …
and the hilarity will begin before you even start…
We took the plunge and rafted between Monistrol
d’Allier and Prades with all our friends on the same
raft!

Short hikes
Horse riding trails
as far as the eye can see
Horse riding for tourists is
developing rapidly in the HauteLoire, with a network of almost
1,500 km of marked paths. From
short horse or pony rides
departing from a number of
equestrian centres lasting just a
few hours, to rides lasting
several days along well-known
itineraries (Caracolade, the Ecrin
du Velay Vert…), with
accommodation in welcoming
gîtes, everything is designed to
satisfy the needs of both rider
and horse.
The Ecrin du Velay Vert
This 200-km itinerary took us to
places of rare beauty. The 6-day
circuit encircles the Le Puy-enVelay basin, climbs and then runs
along the ridges of the Mézenc
and Meygal massifs. The route
can be found on the IGN
équirando map.

We walked up the River Allier through country lanes towards
its sources at the Moure de la Gardille… Red kites, peregrine
falcons and short-toed eagles patrolled the wild gorges in a
beautiful blue sky…
A 200-km itinerary in the heart of the gorges de l’Allier. It was
possible to walk this distance in eleven days but you could
stay longer and discover some of the interesting sights the
itinerary has to offer: châteaux, abbeys, basilicas, chapels,
wall paintings, hillside villages, rustic vineyards, architectural
works from the Cévenol railway line, large villages and lively
small towns…

Walking in the footsteps of Stevenson and
Modestine – GR70
What an incredible adventure it would be to make the same
journey that Robert-Louis Stevenson did in 1878,
accompanied by a donkey with the gentle name of
Modestine! From the vast volcanic plateaus of Le Velay to the
Cévennes of the Camisards through the gorges sauvages of
the Loire, exciting tales were written in purple ink by the man
who distinguished himself, 7 years later, with the famous
novel “Treasure Island”! Today, although they won’t
acknowledge you, the pack donkeys in the Haute-Loire
are well trained to take you from Le Monastier to
Saint-Jean-du-Gard. And what an adventure for us too!

Around the Mézenc – Gerbier-de-Jonc Massif
This GR de Pays trail runs through countryside that is a perfect
example of volcanism in the Massif Central and provides hikers
with an insight into its exceptional environment and
landscapes. The main circuit, which is 100 km long and its
north-south diagonal, which is 36 km long, can be walked in 2,
3, 4 or 5 days. Stunning landscapes we would love to see again.

The Way of Saint-James…
Set off in search of adventure !
The legendary trail to Santiago-deCompostela : Via Podiensis – GR65
A real gem nestled in the heart of the volcanoes in a green
setting, Le Puy-en-Velay is proud to be the departure point
of the most ancient pilgrimage since its bishop Godescalc
set off to Compostela in 951. The cathedral, inspired by
Eastern and Moorish architecture (11th and 12th centuries),
and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, witnesses thousands of
pilgrims setting off every year on the “long journey” and
many hikers attempting the first section, which is the most
picturesque, between Velay, Margeride and Aubrac.

Saône-et-Loire, Rhône, Loire and Haute-Loire. The second,
