WHY CHOOSE AUVERGNE ?
1
A UNIQUE VOLCANIC LANDSCAPE
The volcanoes of Auvergne are a natural treasure, unique in Europe.
Dormant for thousands of years, they continue to be one of
the region’s main curiosities. Two of the most famous volcanoes
are the Puy de Dôme (1,465 m), offering unrivalled views over the
Chaîne des Puys and its 80 domes and craters, and the Puy Mary
(1,787 m), with its imposing shape in the heart of the Cantal mountains.
In addition to the many volcanic summits, Auvergne is a land of
crater lakes formed by eruptions thousands of years ago.
Visitors can hike, bike, sail or swim in these unique lakes.
2
DIVERSE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
In one of Europe’s largest protected areas, which includes two nature
parks and five nature reserves, Auvergne invites you to enjoy
a fantastic journey, with hiking, cycling, horse riding, watersports,
adventure tree-climbing, leisure parks and plenty more.
One of France’s most famous hiking trail, the Way of St. James
begins in Le Puy-en-Velay. With sections of its route listed as
World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, the Via Podiensis is one
of France’s four routes to Santiago de Compostela.

IMPRESSIVE ROMANESQUE CHURCHES
Auvergne has one of the richest Romanesque heritages in Europe,
with more than 250 religious buildings built between the 11th and
13th centuries. The Romanesque style in Auvergne is particularly well
represented by five major churches: Saint-Saturnin, Saint-Nectaire,
Notre-Dame-d’Orcival, Saint-Austremoine abbey church in Issoire
and Notre-Dame-du-Port in Clermont-Ferrand which has UNESCO
world heritage status as part of the St. James’ Way. Other examples
of the Romanesque style are the Saint-Julien basilica in Brioude,
with its contemporary stained glass windows, and the UNESCO listed
cathedral of Le Puy-en-Velay.
4
CHARMING VILLAGES
Eleven villages in Auvergne have been ranked among the “Most Beautiful
Villages in France” for their charm, history and quality as tourist
destinations. In Haute-Loire, visit Blesle, Arlempdes, Pradelles and
Lavaudieu, with its extraordinary Romanesque cloister. In Cantal,
Salers and Tournemire proudly display their architecture made using
volcanic stone and their traditional schist roofs. In Allier, discover
Charroux, a medieval village, and in Puy-de-Dôme, explore Usson,
Saint-Floret, Montpeyroux with its winemaking atmosphere
and Saint-Saturnin, with its exceptional Romanesque church
and its château. www.france-beautiful-villages.org

CLIMATE
The Auvergne region has a continental climate. It shifts
between warm summers and wetter winters. In the
mountainous areas of Auvergne, the climate is wetter
and colder. However, an area like Clermont-Ferrand is
one of the driest and sunniest cities in France.
In some areas of the Auvergne temperatures are influenced
by the altitude of the terrain, so no one area will be the
same. For those looking for sunshine and warmth, May,
June, July, August and September is the best time to visit
the Auvergne. However, for those looking for winter holidays
and activities such as skiing, then December, January and
February are ideal times as the mountains will be covered
by snow.

CLERMONT-FERRAND
The Best of Clermont-Ferrand
A HISTORIC CITY AT THE FOOT
OF THE VOLCANOES
Capital of the Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand lies at the foot
of the emblematic Puy de Dôme and boasts 2,000 years of history
and a rich heritage. The old centres of Clermont and Montferrand
are brimming with medieval and Renaissance architecture.
A walk around the town unveils the religious heritage of Clermont:
the UNESCO listed Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica, a gem of Auvergne
Romanesque architecture and the Gothic cathedral built of lava stone
overlooking Clermont. This stone from the nearby town of Volvic
can also be seen in private mansions and exceptional fountains.
Clermont’s particularly rich cultural institutions include three museums,
the Comédie de Clermont national theatre and the Coopérative de Mai,
one of France’s most renowned contemporary music concert halls.
Clermont-Ferrand’s strategic position at the crossroads of Europe
and central France’s main motorways makes it an ideal
gateway into the region.

LE PUY-EN-VELAY
VIBRANT
AND SPIRITUAL
One of the starting points for the Way of Saint James (the pilgrimage
route to Santiago de Compostela), the town of Le Puy-en-Velay is
well-known for its unrivalled religious heritage.
Pilgrims and tourists alike climb the winding cobblestone streets that lead
up to the 11th century Cathedral of Notre-Dame-du-Puy, a UNESCO World
Heritage site that conserves a statue of the Black Virgin and a 12th century
Romanesque cloister. Further up, on the Corneille rock is the imposing iron
statue of Notre-Dame-de-France (the town’s protective virgin).
Visitors can discover all these sights via a tourist train that circles the town.
Le Puy-en-Velay is also renowned for the century-old tradition of hand-made
lace and today the skills and techniques have been maintained thanks to
the creation of a national academy of lace and a museum. The town really
comes alive during the Bird King Renaissance Festival on the third weekend
in September. With parades, archery competitions and shows, it’s a great
way to discover Le Puy-en-Velay.

Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe Chapel
Perched on a volcanic rock 88m high to the north of the city centre,
this 10th century chapel offers panoramic views of Le Puy-en-Velay.
To reach the top, visitors must climb the 268 steps that wrap their way
around the volcano. Inside, the stained glass windows, painted walls offer
a peaceful sanctuary for visitors.

Local cuisine
The famous Puy lentil hails from the town, a perfect side dish for sausage
or local salmon, served in the restaurants lining the streets of the city
centre and the Place du Plot with its brightly painted buildings. On Saturday
mornings, the square is taken over by a market offering fresh produce,
local cheeses and artisanal products. Also in the centre of town is the Espace
Pagès where visitors taste (in moderation!) and learn more about the local
Verveine liqueur.

MOULINS
THE CULTURAL CAPITAL
OF THE ALLIER
Along the Allier River and just two and a half hours from Paris by train,
Moulins was the Duchy of Bourbonnais from 1327 to 1527. The Bourbons
left their mark all across the city: in the Chapel of the Visitation whose
outstanding painted ceilings have recently been restored, or in
the Cathedral that houses the famous Master of Moulins Triptych
painting, featuring a Duke and Duchess of Bourbon.
There are also several unique museums in Moulins. Just across the square
from the cathedral, is the Maison Mantin, bequeathed to the town in 1905
by Louis Mantin, a wealthy middle-class citizen. The house, frozen in time
for ever, conserves the quirky collection of the master of the house.
The Musée de l’Illustration Jeunesse is Iocated in the heart of the old town
in a marvellous private building dating from the 18th century. Unique in
its kind, the museum is devoted to illustrations from children’s books dating
from the last 50 years. With so much to see, don’t forget to take a stroll
through the cobbled streets of the historical old town and admire
the timber-framed houses.
The Best of Moulins
CNCS
The highlight of Moulins is the CNCS (National Theatre Costume and Stage
Design Centre). With a collection of 10,000 opera, theatre and ballet costumes,
this centre is a shrine to costume making know-how and the creation
of theatrical settings. The museum is housed in former army barracks,
listed as a historical monument. Two temporary exhibitions yearly add
to a permanent exhibition devoted to Rudolf Nureyev.

On the trail of Coco Chanel
The Grand Café, a brasserie with historical monument status, has retained
its Art nouveau style, complete with panelling, mirror-covered walls, an antique
clock and a barometer. During the 1910s, it was here that Gabrielle Chanel,
who once lived in Moulins, sang “Qui a vu Coco dans l’Trocadéro?” which is how
she came to be known as Coco.

craters, tucked inside a forest, this is a place for a lovely, peaceful

in Auvergne. Grass terraces line the lake, as well as play areas for
children and self-service grills. The watersports area includes sailboat

A dam along the Sioule River in the north-west corner of
the Puy-de-Dôme forms the Fades-Besserve Reservoir, which counts
three beaches. In the Cantal, downstream from the Garabit Viaduc,
the Truyère River feeds Grandval Lake, with several swimming areas.
Supervised beaches can be found along the rivers of the Haute-Loire
department. Aurec-sur-Loire, named for its position on the Loire River
offers swimming and water activities. In the impressive Allier Gorges,
swim in Prades, Lavoûte-Chilhac, Monistrol-d’Allier or Vieille Brioude.
Further up the Allier River, the Plage des Céléstins beach takes over

resort!
