There’s more to Mid Wales and the Brecon Beacons than you may think. Don’t let our peaceful hills and
velvety vales fool you. If you’re into activities you’ve come to the right place for walking, cycling, riding,
fishing, canal cruising and a whole lot more. The land of the red kite is also the land of festivals, with
world-renowned get-togethers inspired by everything from food to books. We have ancient historic sites
and an agenda-setting ‘village of the future’, vast caverns and intimate craft workshops, classy country
towns and some of the wildest views in Britain.
You may also think that we’re a long way away. We’re not. In just a few hours from much of the UK you’ll
be in the heart of Wales, where the air is super-fresh, the surroundings intoxicating, and the night skies
starry dark.

Yes, it’s the Royal Welsh Show, Europe’s biggest rural jamboree, four days of farming and family fun in Builth Wells.
What an Offa.
Walk the borderland Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail, which follows an ancient 8th-century earthwork. It’s one of
our countless walks and trails, long and short, easy and challenging.
The Lake District.
We have one of our very own. Make that four – the Elan Valley lakes near Rhayader, Llyn Clywedog near
Llanidloes, Llangorse near Brecon and remote Lake Vyrnwy, straight out of a fairytale.

surround it?

Cyclists and mountain bikers love Mid Wales. What’s not to like? Quiet roads, inspiring uplands, scenic climbs and

The Brecon Beacons National Park
is a very green place to begin with.
Its mountains, sculpted by ice, are
grassy and smooth, rolling like green
waves across a rural landscape for
520 square miles.
It’s the Great Outdoors of Wales, a backdrop
for all kinds of fresh-air activities. The Park has
also been nurturing activities of another kind:
a sustainable, eco-friendly tourism that works
for everyone and leaves the lightest possible
touch. It’s leading the way with its inspirational
blueprint for green living.
Feelgood for free
Elsewhere in this guide we tell
you all about the many things you
can get up to in the Beacons that
don’t cost the earth…. stargazing
and mountain biking, walking and
wildlife watching.
Wheely green. Ditch the car and hop on the

National Park, is the eco-perfect way to go for walkers
and sightseers. Not forgetting cyclists, for some buses
come equipped with bike trailers.

The Knowledge. It’s not something restricted to
London cabbies. Our taxi drivers have it too. ‘National
Park Knowledge’ applies to taxi drivers from Brecon and
Abergavenny who have been trained to provide visitors

walks and short walks. Tough cross-country
challenges and Sunday afternoon strolls.

Beacons offers some of the most exhilarating, goodto-be-alive walking country in Britain. There’s more of
that overwhelming sense of space and freedom on
the secretive spine of Wales, the Cambrian Mountains,

almost by Royal Appointment: HRH The Prince of Wales
is a big fan of this wild area of upland farms and rural
communities, with rare natural wildlife habitats wildlife
and farming practices dating back to the Middle Ages.

Offa’s Countryside. Royalty also makes an appearance
along the border, though it’s 8th century in origin. That’s
when King Offa built his great earthen dyke. Get to know
this beguiling, slightly mysterious area better by looking
out for more details on ‘Irresistible Offa’ a new crossborder project to develop and promote sustainable
tourism – including walks and transport links – in Offa’s
Countryside.
Trailblazing. Two National Trails cross our hills, plus
two long-distance riverside walks. That’s just the start
of it. There are all kind of shorter walks too, such as
the tongue-twisting Pererindod Melangell trail trodden
centuries ago by pilgrims, drovers and quarrymen. Down
south in the Brecon Beacons there’s the tongue-in-cheek
challenge of three walks: Bwlch with Altitude, Magnitude
or Fortitude. And if you’re lost without a satnav take a
guided walk or follow a ‘Trail Tempter’, choose easy,
moderate or strenuous. Or sign up for a festival
dedicated to our favourite outdoor activity at places like
Crickhowell, Hay and Llanwrtyd Wells.
Access for all. Everyone can enjoy our countryside.
Accessible Powys is a guide to trails and sites suitable for
people like wheelchair users, parents with small children
and those with limited walking ability. It lists everything
from sculpture trails to canalside paths, nature reserves
to parklands.

We’ve all gone nuts about cycling.
With Wiggin’s Tour de France victory
and Olympic wins for our own
Geraint Thomas and Nicole Cook
Team, we’re riding high.
With routes to challenge the best, the Brecon Beacons
has been a great training ground for the pair and has
challenged ‘The Best’ for the last four years, on The
Tour of Britain Cycle Race, where we have no problem
supplying ‘King of the Mountains’ climbs for the teams
to tackle. Follow in their tracks starting at Machynlleth
and ending at Caerphilly Castle.

Scenic highs and easy riding. Cycling is a real and

Life In The Slow Lane

No need for traffic lights to slow
you down (not that we have that
many to start with). You’ll soon
be slipping into our way of doing
things. Which means taking it easy
on canal boats and steam trains,
unwinding while walking, cycling,
birdwatching, stargazing, fishing
or another local speciality, doing
nothing in particular.
We’re Wales’ quietest region, and we quite like
it that way. No big towns. No manic motorways.
No urban sprawl. No light pollution. No hassle. No
problem.
Hush hour. Potter along the Brecon and
Monmouthshire Canal, our lovely, leafy inland
waterway that glides ever so slowly through the
National Park. There’s plentiful boat hire, plus trips
from the wharf in Brecon.

The Montgomery Canal travels through
unhurried border country. It’s important ecology
has seen it rewarded with European designation as
a ‘Special Area of Conservation’. It continues to be
sensitively restored by volunteers.
Easy rider. It’s no strain by train. Especially when
you hop on one of our delightful narrow gauge
railways. The Brecon Mountain Railway does what
it says on the tin, taking you into the heart of the
Beacons. Further north, the borderland Welshpool
and Llanfair Light Railway offers a beguiling rural
ride through woodland, fields and rich farming
country. You’ll be glued to the views from our
main passenger lines too. The Heart of Wales
Line meanders through the gorgeous middle of
Mid Wales while the Cambrian Line links rolling
border country to the ‘Wild Wales’ of the Cambrian
Mountains.
Top Ten Drives
Drive across the Cambrian Mountains,
the empty, enigmatic ‘roof of Wales’,
with just sheep and red kites for
company. Or follow the B4560 through
the Brecon Beacons, one of National
Geographic magazine’s top 10 drives
in the world, alongside routes in Alaska,
Arizona and the Atlas Mountains.

Caves and energy conservation,
kids’ attractions and King Arthur,
underground and overground… you’ll
be surprised what you can get up to
in these parts, whatever the weather.
Putting on a show. Ogof in Welsh means cave, a
description that doesn’t begin to do justice to the
subterranean spectacle at Dan-yr-Ogof Showcaves
Centre for Wales where the action of water on rock
has created everything from vast, echoing chambers
to impossibly delicate works of underground art. Up
above there’s more to enjoy: a Dinosaur Park, Iron
Age Village, Shire Horse Centre, Farm and Playbarn.
This has been voted Britain’s Finest Natural Wonder
and received a National Tourism Award for Wales in
November 2013.

Playtime. Take the kids to award-winning centres such
as Cantref Adventure Farm or The Play Barn at Brynich,
near Brecon, where they can let off steam while you enjoy
comfy sofas, coffee and tasty home-made treats. For
more of the same go to Quackers at Newbridge-on-Wye.
Boneshaker. The National Cycle Collection at
Llandrindod Wells is in the news too. But can you imagine
Chris Froome winning the Tour de France on one of its
penny farthings, just some of the 250 bikes on display?
What’s the alternative? The Centre for Alternative
Technology answers that question. This eye-opening,
eco-friendly ‘village of the future’ near Corris is full of
ideas for leading a greener life. And it does it in a way
that entertains as well as inspires.
Water power. That’s what turns Talgarth’s restored
18th-century flourmill. Take a tour, buy some fresh
bread or enjoy a tasty meal.
Fit for a king. King Arthur is the underground star of
the labyrinth at Corris. This dramatic glimpse into the
Dark Ages involves an underground boat trip (hooded
boatman provided) and gushing waterfall. If you don’t
fancy the dark side you might prefer the Bards’ Quest
and Craft Centre above.
Judge for yourself
The world of the 19th-century circuit
judge lives on at the award-winning
Judge’s Lodgings, Presteigne. Take an
‘upstairs, downstairs’ audio tour of
its well-appointed apartments, dingy
servants’ quarters, court room and
damp cells.

It’s in our nature to act this way. As
Wales’s quietest, most unhurried
region we’re full of green spaces and
gardens, forests and farmland.
There are nature and wildlife reserves over almost every
hill. And in the Brecon Beacons we have a National Park
characterised by its wide, open spaces, grassy mountains
and big skies.

World class by nature. The eco-star rating is off the
scale in the Dyfi Valley. It’s Wales’ one and only UNESCO
Biosphere Reserve, but is in good company, along with
Yellowstone National Park, Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) and Mount
Olympus. They couldn’t have chosen a greener, more
beautiful place.

outstanding ecological importance and local cultures to

Cors Dyfi is a wonderful little nature reserve, teaming
with wildlife, including the magnificent Osprey, which
bred on the reserve for the first time in 2011. Like many
of us, they choose to visit during the spring and summer.

Green fingers too. When we do apply ourselves to
nature we make a pretty good job of it. Green fingers
come with the territory. Towns and villages are bedecked
in summer bloom, and our gardens range from the
theatrical (that’s the only word to describe the Italianate
terraces at Powis Castle, Welshpool) to the intimate
walled, woodland and water garden at Ashford House,
Talybont-on-Usk.
In the wild. Wildlife is right at home throughout the
area. From the Craig y Cilau National Nature Reserve in
the south (spectacular limestone cliffs above Crickhowell,
with rare whitebeam trees) to the Claerwen National
Nature Reserve in the Elan Valley, to the vast RSPB reserve
in the north around Lake Vyrnwy, you’ll discover woods
Kite flying. If you’re lucky you’ll see them in the Brecon
Beacons, border country and Cambrian Mountains. We’re
talking about red kites, the endangered bird of prey that has
made a spectacular comeback in our undisturbed hills. For
guaranteed sightings watch them feeding at Gigrin Farm near
Rhayader.

You’d be surprised. Our hills and
vales, rivers and lakes, aren’t
just good to look at. They’re the
backdrop for all kinds of things to
do. Here’s a sample to get you in the
mood.
Book browsing. It sounds easy but be warned. In
tiny Hay-on-Wye, the unlikely book capital of the
world, it can turn into a bit of a bookathon. They
have over 40 bookshops, specialising in everything
from bargain paperbacks to antique books. It’s even

more exhausting, in the nicest possible way, when the
famous festival is in full swing.
Fungi foraging
Fungi safaris are a speciality
in and around the Elan Valley.
Its woods are famous for
their mushrooms (including
chanterelles, porcini and a
delightful sounding species
known as wood hedgehogs).
Star spotting. No, we aren’t talking again about the
Dishy fishing. The famed Usk and Wye rivers (the
Hay Festival, where you might well bump into a celeb
latter almost cuts us in half) are two of the finest for
or two. Green by day, black by night – that’s the Brecon
salmon and sewin, our name for sea-trout. The fish

Riding is a passion in these parts. If
you don’t believe us go along to the
Royal Welsh Show (or any farming
gathering, for that matter) and
witness the grass roots emotions
roused by a display of Welsh cobs.
So it’s not surprising to hear that pony trekking was
‘invented’ in our very own Llanwrtyd Wells (in 1956,
since you ask). Or that you can ride from north to south
on bridleways and green lanes, across hilltops and
through forests in our own version of the Wild West we
call ‘Wild Wales’.
Powys on Horseback
New routes have been opened up
to horse riders and horse-drawn
carriages in Mid Wales. There are
routes on Mynydd Epynt, in the
Radnorshire hills and the Dyfnant
Forest.

You’ll find riding and trekking centres everywhere, geared
up for beginners and experts, so you can saddle up in
confidence that you’ll get the ride of your life. What’s
more, we’ve been busy putting together special routes.
Eighteen, ranging from four to seventeen miles, are
featured on www.midwalesmyway.com. Their names
are delightful - the Fforest Inn, Molecatcher’s Wood and
Castle Hill Ride and the rides themselves even more so.
Big hitters. Our scenery also suits golfers. Many of our
courses come with stunning views. Lofty Llanymynech,
where Ian Woosnam cut his teeth, looks out across
border country (you even have to cross into England
to play three of its holes, though we don’t hold that
against it). Woosie reckons that ‘the view from the 12th
tee is one of the most magnificent you’ll see anywhere’.
And he’s been around.
You’ll also need to keep your eye on the ball at Cradoc
which has stunning vistas overlooking the Brecon
Beacons, and upland Llandrindod Wells, an intriguing
links-style hilltop course designed by the legendary
Harry Vardon. ‘Golf as it should be’ is a winning Welsh
formula that combines superb courses with unstuffy
clubhouses and genuine hospitality. We’ve even laid on
an easy way to sample it.

You could argue that nothing quite
lives up to our natural beauty. You’d
be wrong. Artists and craftspeople,
painters and performers seem to
blossom in these parts, creating a rich
cultural life that is as rewarding as the
surroundings.
Making Hay. Take the Hay Festival, for example, which
began in a field with 200 people in 1988. This ‘local
and global’ phenomenon, to quote co-founder Peter
Florence, now has a worldwide reach, with spin-off
versions taking place as far afield as South America. In
spirit, it will always be rooted in a quirky little Welsh

town that manages to be both rustic and cosmopolitan.
Hay itself is as much a star as the glittering assembly
of writers, thinkers, musicians and scientists it attracts
each year, along with an audience of a quarter of a
million. ‘They arrive in the greenest of spaces they have
ever seen,’ says Peter.
Fair play. We’re a ‘land of festivals’. Brecon’s Jazz
Festival attracts top international performers and big
crowds. ‘Van the Man’ (Van Morrison) was main man at
the Green Man last year. Held in a beautiful Usk Valley
setting near Crickhowell, this laid-back indie festival
goes from strength to strength. Other festival venues
of artistic excellence include those at Machynlleth,
Llandovery, Gregynog and Presteigne.
Art works. In many ways, Machynlleth’s Museum of
Modern Art sums up the contemporary scene in Mid
Wales, for within the traditional surroundings of a grey
stoned Welsh chapel you’ll find bold artistic statements,
arresting imagery and splashes of technicolour. Andrew
Logan’s bonkers Museum of Sculpture is another,
bringing showbiz to the sleepy village of Berriew.
Brecon is an especially arty town, packed with galleries
on the ArtBeat trail. For craft workshops simply look
out for the signs (there are lots of them) or go to craft
centres at Corris, Erwood and Hay. Neither are we short
of arts venues and theatres. You’ll find the major ones
at Brecon, Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells, Machynlleth,
Newtown and Ystradgynlais.

The Monty Python team once
famously asked, ‘What did the
Romans ever do for us?’ Quite a lot,
actually. One major Welsh example
is Sarn Helen, their highway
through central Wales – you can
still follow in their footsteps across
the Beacons to Y Gaer, their fort
near Brecon.
It’s not just the Romans. The prehistoric, early
Christian and medieval periods are all still with us, in
the shape of old stones and ancient religious sites,
castles and Iron Age hillforts.
Tough as Old Boots. King Offa of Mercia’s 8thcentury earthwork border between England and
Wales was a monumental task. Start off at the Offa’s
Dyke Centre, Knighton, then walk a stretch of the
dyke, still intact in the hills above.

The spirit of place. When you stumble across
Llanthony Priory, deep in the Black Mountains, you
can’t help but agree that it’s a place ‘truly calculated
for religion’. Nearby Partrishow Church also takes
some finding, but it’s worth it for its astonishing
medieval carved rood screed. Is it better than the
elaborate carvings at St Cynllo’s Church, Llanbister?
You decide. Brecon Cathedral’s story, dating back to
1093, is told at its Heritage Centre in a 17th-century
tithe barn.
Castles and mansions. Tretower Court and Castle
near Crickhowell has a dual personality. A draughty,
rough and ready fortified tower stands next to a
handsome manor house that would have been very
‘des res’ in its time. Powis Castle, Welshpool, goes
one better. What began life as a humble fort evolved
over the centuries into a glittering country house.
Tumbledown Montgomery Castle, a neighbour
across the valley, never had it so lucky, yet its ruins
preserve an authentic medieval spirit. For out and out
splendour visit Abbeycwmhir Hall, an overwhelming
Victorian Revival Gothic mansion dripping in finery.
Just north of Llandrindod Wells, it is an architectural
jewel in its own right, purpose-built as a Victorian
resort and spa town.
A bygone age
Soaring arches and preserved machinery
are a haunting reminder of our industrial
heritage. The Ynyscedwyn Ironworks Park
now stands on the site of the ironworks
which made Ystradgynlais famous, dating
back as far as the 17th Century. Witness a
rich and unique heritage hundreds of years
in the making.

reared in the wild Cambrian
Mountains would be, but
Cambrian Mountain’s lamb
‘newydd’ actually took pride of
place as the main course at Her
Majesty’s Jubilee lunch.
Shop around. For once, it’s a real pleasure. Brecon’s
galleries and craft shops have an enviable reputation for
quality. Machynlleth is a buzzing shopping destination,
its wide main street lined with shops specialising in
crafts, clothes and outdoor gear. And Hay isn’t just about
bookshops. It’s also stacked high with places selling crafts
and fashion, antiques and chic household goods.
And if you think that those customer friendly, family run
emporia that sell everything from bags of nails to high end
homeware are long gone, then the shop on the corner in
Crickhowell, or the hardware store in Montgomery that
‘trades in old fashioned values and service’, will bring back
happy memories. What a refreshing change from the one
supersize fits all shopping you get at today’s shopping
centres.
Taste the difference. You will, believe us. Our food is
slow, local and fresh – and all the better for it. Call into
a farmers’ market, market hall or farm shop (as you can
imagine, we have quite a few) and meet the producers. Eat
at country inns and gastropubs where, nowadays, the food
has eclipsed the beer (Felin Fach Griffin near Brecon, for
example, is the Good Pub Guide’s ‘Dining Pub of the Year’).
You’ll find bistros and fine dining in the most unlikely of
places, like The Checkers in small town Montgomery, one
of Wales’s four Michelin starred restaurants.
