HERDER RIGHTS CATALOGUE CHILDREN´S BOOKS SPRING 2009 Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to present you with this catalogue of our Spring 2009 publications. What is happiness? How long is eternity? What does the Pope do all day? These are just a few of the typical questions children ask. Children are naturally inquisitive and we are eager to satisfy their thirst for knowledge! “The Big Questions in Life for Little Philosophers” is a child’s introduction to Philosophy, in “All about the Vatican” they are presented with historical facts and Mathematics and Physics also have their fair share in “The Space Explorers” with its 20 scientific experiments. Young readers with a sense of adventure will love the fascinating stories of “When the Wind Man Comes” and “The Magic of the World Ring”, while smaller children (and those reading aloud to them!) will enjoy the numerous stories Niklas and Daddy think up in “Chocolate at the Seaside”, the three-minute tales of cheerful creatures or the escapades of the Crumbs. Jigsaw fans are in for a lot of fun this season. Not only are there two new Jigsaw Puzzle Books, “The Police” and “Toys”, but also the first in a series of Little Elf jigsaw puzzle books with pictures of all Lilli’s friends. And because Little Elf is so popular among our younger readers, there is not only another exciting Little Elf story about how Tim gets stuck in a tree house and has to rescued by Little Elf, but also Little Elf invitations to delight friends with and a Little Elf family calendar in which each member of the family can add their own appointments, invitations, sports events etc. As always, we have a number of instructive books to encourage children to face and overcome their fears. These include the stories of Hasematz who hates sharing, Leon who is frightened of the dark and Paul who can’t swim. Annette Langen has produced two attractive religious books: A Bible for children containing 20 favourite Bible stories and a book of modern (and sometimes cheeky!) prayers, “Dear God, You are Always Close to us”, which will encourage children to enjoy praying. With Markus Tomberg’s “Come to Church” even the youngest churchgoer has a Mass book to take to church. We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that we will be attending the BOLOGNA CHILDREN’S BOOK FAIR (23rd – 26th March 2009) and look forward to seeing you there. Please do not hesitate to contact us for an appointment. If you have any questions or require further information on titles in this catalogue, please do not hesitate to contact us. Jigsaw Puzzle Polizei. Puzzlespaß ab 2 Jahren Toys. Jigsaw Puzzle Spielzeuge. Puzzlespaß ab 2 Jahren Little Elf and her friends A police action is always an exciting event in the eyes of a young child. Children will have hours of fun putting together the jigsaw pieces to complete pictures of a police car with blue flashing light or the traffic policeman guiding traffic on busy roads or the police helicopter. Every child’s bedroom is full of toys: a ball, a doll, a cuddly toy or building blocks. Children will have lots of fun assembling the pieces of these jigsaw puzzles and spotting their favourite toys on each colourful picture. What a lot of friends Little Elf has! There are Hanna and Jonas with whom she has shared many exciting adventures, the shimmering dragonflies who zealously carry messages backwards and forwards and of course all her schoolmates at Elf School. For each friend there is a jigsaw puzzle and children will have hours of fun fitting the pieces together to make pictures of all Lilli’s friends. But on a trip to the seaside with his parents he meets Anton, a starfish, and Karl, a piece of driftwood. Soon Paul discovers that you can move around in the water and feel safe after all. You just have to master a few tricks and it can even be fun. In the end even cheeky little Anna is impressed by his achievements. Jonas has a tree house at last! High up in the cherry tree he celebrates his birthday with Hanna, Little Elf and Tim, the boy next door. Sitting down to tea later, the children suddenly see dragon flies in their garden - a message from Little Elf! Tim is in danger. Hiding from his mother in the tree house, the ladder toppled over and now he is stuck. Little Elf comes to the rescue again. Leon‘s little lion is a bit of a coward. Leon and Daddy have christened him „Scaredy-Cat“. But some of the things that frighten the little lion give Leon the jitters too! He doesn‘t like being in the dark at night or going for a vaccination either. This wonderful story tells how two frightened friends come to terms with and overcome their fears and how a scaredy-cat learns how to roar like a lion. Franziska van Almsick was awarded numerous gold medals for Germany during her career as a professional swimmer. Marc Limoni’s books “Stories of the Little Elf”, “Little Elf at Elf School” and “Little Elf in the Forest” were published by KeRLE. Susanne Schwandt works as a freelance illustrator. That‘s mine! Hasematz. Das gehört aber mir! Chocolate at the Seaside Schokolade am Meer Hasematz has been given a new spade. It’s red and it’s wonderful and he is so proud of it. He can’t wait to show it to Pieks and Gretchen. The two friends are very impressed and Pieks asks if he can borrow it for a while. But Hasematz refuses to lend it to him because it’s brand new. Pieks is bitterly disappointed. Didn’t he just share his apple with Hasematz? Aren’t they friends?! On Sundays, Nikla and Daddy go to the café. Nikla has chocolate, Daddy has a coffee and they share a good story. Ideas for a good story can be found even in the simplest objects. How does a wrongly buttoned-up jacket lead to a story of two bears in love? Or a fluffy white cloud to a man who sells beds? Or the black cat on the terrace to a cold opera singer? Only Nikla and Daddy know the secret… Katja Reider’s stories have been published in a number of successful books for children and young adults as well as gift books for adults. Antonia Michaelis began at age five to swamp those around her with books (not legible at the time!).
