From the Pote’s Podium,
Well here is another month gone by and it was a very busy month indeed.Your Temple
participated in two parades, one in Marana where the Shrine always gets a warm
welcome and the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Tucson. I would like to thank those units
that participated. Of course the Blue Angels, Van Divan, Motorcycles, and Clowns
always get the most attention since they can get right up to crowd, but the most
important part is that we are there showing the community that we are still at work in
the community.
That being said, I want to make the point that parades are our opportunity to display
the Fez and make ourselves known to those who may need our help, or possibly to
someone who knows someone. For future reference we have one more parade before summer. “The
MEMORIAL DAY Parade” is on Monday May 25, and that parade and all the rest of the parades coming in
the Fall are all “Unit CALL OUTS”. If your unit hasn’t participated in a parade lately, it’s time to dust off
the uniforms and spruce up your Fez. For those units that can no longer march, we have a number of
vehicles available to ride on and at least “SHOW the FEZ”. It is also a perfect time to catch up with friends
you may not have seen in awhile, and maybe meet some new one’s.
We as Shiners, do great work for the less fortunate kids in our community and we should be proud
enough of our accomplishments to let the public know that we are a part of this community.
This year and every year for the foreseeable future our Shrine and many others will be focusing on
Membership, because our members are all growing older and there is a dire necessity for a new generation
of Shriners to take up the reins of leadership. If each current Shriner only knows one person who may
be a good candidate for membership, and can get that person to at least attend some of our functions or
stop and talk about what the shrine stands for, we can make a start on rebuilding membership. Our
office has a generous supply of Business card sized applications for membership, and if everyone had just
one to pass on to someone they know it can be a start to a new Shriner. So, I would ask that next time
you are down at the Center, stop in the recorder’s aides office and pick up a few of those applications and
keep them in our pocket with your business cards. Just a note I was able to talk to three masons at the
last two parades, and all three got those applications for membership. Nothing may come from those
applications but, it is an opportunity that we as a group cannot afford to pass up. ‘Nough Said.
Your Divan has been discussing the fact that the Shrine should be a place where all family members
are welcome. We are open to any ideas from the membership for more family oriented functions. Our
Friday Fish Fry’s are doing well, Bingo is always well attended, we are scheduling a gun show for the end
of April, there will be some live shows coming up in the Summer and the fall, and I’d like to solicit ideas
for Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day events for the families to attend.
In closing I would like to take this opportunity to Thank everyone who has been so supportive this year
to make it a good year. We all still have a lot of work to do, but personally I want all of you to know that
I appreciate all the support I have received and that includes all the ladies that donate so much of their
time to support our membership. There are some projects coming up that the lady’s organizations are
also working with the units to bring to our center. Keep an eye out for upcoming events.
We are a family of Masonic organizations and as a reminder; I will close with a Quote from the Shrine
Creed.
“We honor Family. We respect our Parents, Wives, and Children. We should instill in our children the
tenets of the creed and the heritage from which it emanates.”
While the work we do is very important for the children and families we help, as some have nowhere else
to turn, we must not forget about our own families. It is our responsibility to prepare them, support them,
and exemplify for them how to become caring and conscientious leaders. If we do not, then as we age and
pass the mantle of leadership to the younger generations, they will not have developed the traits necessary
for good leadership, and our organization and nation will suffer.

Dear Nobles:
March has proven to be a busy month. The Cigar Tasting went very well and we
will see if this can be repeated. I have already purchased the signs for the May thru
Nov U of A soccer parking. The liability signs will go up as they drive in. I haven’t
worked out all of the logistics but I think we can make this work. I have figured
that 3 people could run this each day quite nicely. Parking will be $5.00 per car.
The Golf Tournament is scheduled for the 19th of April. If you are planning to
attend please fill out the registration form in the lobby and put in my box or give to
the office. This will help me plan for the meals and initial cost. It will be held at
Forty-Niners Country Club beginning at 12:00 and tee off time at 1 PM After golf we
will sit down for eats and give out the awards. Last year we had 38 people and it
was fun. Again, its $50.00 per person which includes golf, cart, and dinner, (and
beer).
Bingo is getting very busy lately. We have averaged over 130 people per session for the last
month. We still need people to work the floor selling tickets and if you are so inclined, we need
callers for both Sunday and Wednesday. When you work you get free food or 2 free drinks after the
game.
I have asked this before but I still would like to hear from the nobility on any new activities they
would like to have at the Shrine. We are just at 600 members now and if we can’t get more
involvement or participation we just may have to think about closing down. We are coming into the
summer season and our electric bills will be over $4,000 every month. Bingo is not going to be able
to carry the entire load. We need ideas for new events and ideas to help generate money to keep the
Center open.

Time to spring forward
Assistant Rabban School Proved to be a very fun and educational
experience. There was a lot of focus on MEMBERSHIP and retention of new
members. I plan on directing my attention to our younger generation.
It is time to get back to why the Shriners was intentionally established.
Nobles it is time to start having FUN again. This will only happen If the
Nobility engages, in the activities we introduce to you.
I have been bartending every Tuesday for a few months now. I know Tuesday
is not a party night per se. Starting March 24th I will be serving " Two For
Two Tuesday " two hot dogs for two bucks with condiments. I am not asking
you to come down to put you to work. I want you to come down have a refreshment and a bite to
Eat.
This is more of an open ear event for me. Come down tell me what I am doing wrong and what I
am doing right. More importantly come down and discuss your new ideas with me. Get involved
Brothers
Start a new club or spear head a new event. I will be there with an attentive ear.
I would however like to call on you Nobles to do a little work at this time. Lets get back in the
publics eye. Wear your Shriners shirts when out in your daily travels. Strike up a conversation with
a stranger about what we do and just how great our fraternity is. Parades, I am very proud of the
units participation. This is our time to shine. It is a true Honor to ride in the Cadillac for me don't
get me wrong, I have truly missed being out there as Raskel, being a clown working the crowd.
The Divan is not what catches the crowds attention the most, it is the units out there performing
Brothers. Units lets make parades a priority.
One thing that does trouble me, Where are the Shrine fez's in the crowd? If you are not in a unit
please participate in our parade,
This is a golden opportunity, Hundreds even thousands see us in these parades Nobles lets get out
and mingle at these events and others.
For every fez in the crowd there are at least ten people in the crowd wanting information on what
we do and how they can join. Participation is key.
On a closing note. Our membership has dropped to less than 600 nobles, Guess what. ??? That
means we have over 500 members. Where are you? I have heard every excuse in the world over the
years. Most common, I don't drive after dark. I can understand this. I also know we only have one
night parade a year that I am aware of, I know we have a few events through the year during the
day at our shrine, Number 1 excuse It is too far to drink and drive.. Brothers a block from your
home is too far to drink and drive. I hope our shrine means more to you than just a place to drink. I
know I am stepping on some toes here, but lets keep it real. Brothers lets get INVOLVED. If our
shrine is going to survive ? It is going to take your help. “Don't just be a Shriner be a Participator
and a Signer.”

Well things are picking up at our Temple. We have had good turnouts at the Friday
night fish fry, and it well be that due to the longer daylight hours, warmer weather
and outstanding food our Nobles and friends are more inclined to participate in our
functions. It,s really good to see the change.
Congratulations to Noble Rob Lewis en attending the Assistant Rabban School, I’m
sure he learned a lot about Shrinedom and will impart that information to us.
Our Military Creed this month is for the Army in Honor of the Chief Rabban and all
other that served in the United States Army.
The Soldiers Creed
I am an American Soldier.
I am a warrior and a member of a team. I serve the people of the United States and live the Army values.
I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen
comrade.
I am disciplined physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills. I

Writings From the Oriental Guide
“Move the barn” and membership, membership, membership and did I say
“membership” were the driving themes throughout the Oriental Guide
Conference held in Tampa 4-7 March. We quickly learned that the two themes
are connected. Membership is easy to understand. Virtually all temples are
dwindling in membership and this should be our first priority to keep our
doors open; Sabbar is no exception as our membership has fallen below the
600 which means we only have two voting representatives at this year’s
Imperial Conference in Houston.
So how does that relate to “Move the barn”? The Shrine was formed in the
1870’s and is represented by a barn erected about the same time. When the barn
was first erected it was on sturdy ground, new and in good shape. Barn dances were held there and there
was always activity going on. Over time the land on which the barn was built became wet and soggy so
that the foundation was no longer level. The building began to deteriorate and the people no longer
enjoyed it as much as they used to; therefore, “move the barn” to a better place and fix the building to be
more inviting. If you haven’t figured it out: move the barn means change our culture to be more in line
with what appeals to the 20/30/40 year olds and thereby making membership more appealing and
desirable e.g. family friendly activities, female friendly, etc.
There was a lot of discussion about how
many of our spouses are employed, as we are and therefore their perceived traditional roles as party
planners, cooks and clean-up crew is no longer as applicable as it once was. You’ll be hearing more about
this in the future.
Bottom line: “be the change that you want to see”.

Good Food Wherever Needed
Saint Patrick’s day
dinner went well, we
had a good turnout
and everyone enjoyed
themselves.
The auto swap meet had a few hiccups but nothing that
we cannot overcome. We do need to have a work party to
tweak a few things on the wagon before May.
Remember starting in May we will be sitting up at the
west entry gate. We will be serving food there on Friday
and Saturday evenings/nights May through November.
We still have a little planing to do for those nights so if at
all possible attend our next meeting. It is very important
that we get some schedules put together.
Out first parade of the
year was at Marana’s
Founders Day.
We had six vehicles
start and six finished. However the tow
truck had a slight mishap when a
wheel came off. But due to the quick
thinking and agility of all the drivers
combined, they managed to re-attach
said wheel and the tow truck did not
need a tow after all. They all
triumphantly crossed the finish line.
A final note all parades for the rest of
the year will be a call out

Clown News
Brothers,
Spring is already here! We had a beautiful on St, Patty’s for the parade - big thank you to
Korny and Dusty for coming out and participating.
By the time you read this, we’ll have had our first “clown social”. I hope to several of these
throughout the year and really look forward to just enjoying some time together. At the last clown
meeting the Pote asked if we’d be interested in sponsoring/hosting a weekend event featuring
Randy Riggles, a well known comedian. We’ll need everyone's support - please pl;an on being a
part of this opportunity, as it can be a nice fundraiser for the Shrine and the units involved. Look
forward to seeing you all at the next clown meeting!
Remember - a child’s smile makes it all worthwhile!

Reflections of a Shrine Clown
In a world that”s full of children,
I come across all kinds.
Some are bold and bratty,
And should be slapped on their behinds.
To heck with the paint, though it soil her dress,
They pull my nose and kick my legs,
And try to snatch my wig.
They reach into my pockets,
It makes them think they’re big.
A moment as touching as this,
I will cherish all my life.
The pain of her plight cut into my heart,
Like a sharp and pointed knife.
But for every one of the nasty ones,
Dozens love a clown.
They are the ones I play to,
The brats don’t get me down.
How proud I am to be a clown,
It brings me tears of joy.
Though I’ll never stop asking the question,
“Why this little girl or boy?”
And each year at the circus,
There is something to recall,
A very special boy or girl
I remember most of all.
But as long as there are children,
I love to make them smile
Especially the less fortunate,
It makes it all worthwhile.
This year a mother came to me
With two sweet little girls,
They wore bright and pretty dresses,
And their hair was done in curls.
Something I’ve not mentioned,
Will really make you laugh.
Some kids actually seek me out,
And want my autograph.
The smaller one reached out too me,
And shyly took my hand.
The older girl stood there,
I did not understand,
No other unit of the Mystic Shrine,
Not even the Divan,
Can get as close to the children,
As we, the clowns, all can.
Her mother told her I was a clown.
(I figured she should know)
I then found out she was blind,
Although it did not show
While I seem to give them something,
As a clown, it seems to me,
That I, reap benefits,
And I’m sure all clowns agree.
As I picked her up she felt my wig,
And I began to realize.
As she gently touched around my nose and face,
Her fingers were her eyes.
For when business pressures get me down,
And in the dumps I’m down
None of it seems to matter,
When I’m made up as a clown.
Then she threw her arms around me,
And gave me such a hug!
Because of my paint I tried to hold back,
But then I gave a shrug.
How lucky can I be
That this poor inflicted little girl,
Liked and trusted me.

Greetings Nobles and Ladies!
‘Tis the spring of the year. When young folks fancies turns to Valentines,
Easter and Love, the Nobles and Shrine Units think of money and the need
of it.
The subject of today’s message:
The units and clubs have been called on, checked with and polled about prospective onion sales.
They estimated that we should be able to sell about 20,000 pounds of onions this year. Also they
unanimously selected 5 pound bags instead of 10 pound bags. The onions will be priced at $6.00
per 5 pound bag. The units have also indicated where their favorite sales positions will be.
Our grower, Bland Farms is located in Glenville, Georgia near Vidalia, the birthplace of the
sweet onion. Bland Farms is also providing recipe handouts for each bag of onions.
This fund raiser differs from others in that you have real tangible product, not the hope of
something to come later. We have this offering for the public which alleviates the need for the
Shrine Nobles to dig into their own pockets supporting this fund raiser for the Shrine Center.
This a project whose proceeds go to help operate and improve the Shrine Center and stays here
in Tucson to the benefit of our Center.
Commission for the units will be 10%, or 60 cents per bag.
Onions are to be available around the 1st of May.

BURKEL'S BITS
I attended 2 regular Shrine Club meetings. They were Northwest Club and Santa Cruz
Club. Santa Cruz had 12 members present. This is good and the interest is high as to
what is going on at the Shrine. Both clubs inquired about onions. I reminded both
clubs to look at the dues cards to make sure they are current. You need to have a
2015 card or you are not current. We have 103 members who have not paid for 2015
of those 43 have not paid 2014 dues. If those 43 do not pay, they will be dropped.
Remember, without a current dues card you cannot attend a stated meeting or a club
meeting.
If you would like to look at the list to see if you or a buddy is on the list, stop in
the office and take a look at the list.
Thanks Ray Adkins for reinstating a list of Contributors who make donations to the Hospital
Transportation fund.

Our last meeting was held at the Lotus Garden and was hosted by Jack and Julia Tilley. Thanks to both
of you for setting this up for the staff. We had a great turn out and all seemed to enjoy meeting at
different places. The next meeting will be at Cody's Beef and Beans. If any Nobles and their Ladies would
like to join us, give me a call—All are Welcome.
The bus trip to the Casino has a brown bag auction and the money from that activity is going to the
Transportation fund. Watch for more information about another trip. A report on the March trip will be
in the May issue of the Topics.

THE INTERNET

Whether it is your favorite grump position when
complaining how things have changed and how difficult
it is to manage this new thing, or it’s just an experience
you’ve never delved in, the Internet is here to stay as
much as space exploration and computers are here to
stay.
We come from a long ancestry of curious folks. And,
that yearning for enlightenment remains prevalent
today. From early childhood we are inquisitive and
wanting to know creatures. The little one demands, “I
want to know why!” It is part of our instinct. Nature
made them that way and there is nothing we can or
should do to quiet their curiosity.
Even as we age, we cannot quell our desire to discover.
That is why the Internet is here. From toddlers to
seniors, people want to experience the power of moving
forward.
The Internet is a learning tool that has to be thought of
and produced. You can not laugh at it or argue it away.
Almost everyone who has experienced this device
doesn't”to want to continue without it. It has the ability
to give you a knowledge bath. And when you begin to
understand in depth you will find excitement in
learning, feeling and living.
We thrive when we get what we want. When we
achieve,ideas blossom and successes erupt. A world of
information concerning anything your passions have an
eye to can be explored by a simple request typed on
your computer keys.
Whether it is secret or earthy, of business or religion,
Inquire! The information is there.

Before you start something that has a pinch of spite in
it, it might behoove you to consider that it’s not always
easy to stop such a thing when you reach the point of
“Enough!”
