at es sich schon herumgesprochen, dass
Bodrum und seine Halbinsel Hotspots
der Ägäis und des östlichen Mittelmeeres sind?
Dass man sagt, das sei das St. Tropez der
Türkei? Dass es gut sein kann, dass einem in
den schicken Hotels oder an den schönen
Stränden von Göltürkbükü oder Torba der eine
oder andere Hollywood-Star über den Weg
läuft?
Nein? Und doch: Das alles stimmt und es
gibt noch einiges mehr zu erzählen. Beginnen
wir mit Geschichte. In der Antike hieß die
Gegend Halicarnassus und sie erlangte
Berühmtheit, weil eines der Sieben Welt­
wunder hier stand: das Grabmal des Königs
Mausolos, das Mausoleum genannt wurde.
Leider ist nicht viel von ihm übrig geblieben.

The peninsula of Bodrum is certainly one of the hottest spots in the Aegean at present.
And not without good reason, as visitors rapidly discover.
So ist es auch nicht der Hauptgrund, warum
Bodrum mittlerweile ein so beliebtes Urlaubsziel geworden ist.
Es sind ganz andere Sachen, die jetzt zählen:
die Sonne, das Meer, die Strände, das Essen,
der Raki, die Clubs. Da sitzen wir nun auf der
Terrasse des Hotels Marmara hoch über
Bodrum, trinken eisgekühlten türkischen Rosé
und blicken hinab auf die weißen Häuser, auf
den Hafen, in dem sich türkische Gulets –
moderne Linienschiffe, die nach Istanbul
oder Izmir oder zu einem anderen Hafen des
östlichen Mittelmeeres unterwegs sind – und
die großen Kreuzfahrtschiffe treffen. Am
Horizont sehen wir die griechische Insel Kos.
Und noch weiter in der Ferne die untergehende
Sonne.

Den Tag haben wir am Strand in der Bucht
von Torba, auf der anderen Seite der Halbinsel,
verbracht. Wir haben unter großen weißen
Sonnenschirmen und auf weißen Loungepolstern auf einem großzügigen Holzsteg, der weit
ins Meer hinausragt, gelegen, sind im klaren,
blaugrünen Wasser geschwommen, haben
beobachtet, wie ein Wasserflugzeug landete
und die Gäste zu einer der Villen am Ufer
gebracht wurden. Hier in Torba haben viele
reiche Istanbuler ihre Feriensitze. Einige
beeindrucken mit ausgezeichneter moderner
Architektur. Vor den Häusern parken Ferraris
und Mercedes-Limousinen.
Vielleicht haben wir auch die Halbinsel
um­rundet. Göltürkbükü ist der Ort des Jetsets
mit schicken Bars, Restaurants und Cafés.
In Gümüslük, das an der Spitze der Halbinsel
liegt, scheint die Zeit stehen geblieben zu sein.
Vielleicht sind wir in Bodrum geblieben und
haben uns Hafen, Kreuzfahrerburg, Fischmarkt
und natürlich die Ausgrabungen beim
Mausoleum und das Amphitheater angesehen.
Die Frage, warum ausgerechnet Bodrum so
beliebt ist, hat uns kein Kopfzerbrechen
bereitet. Sie hat sich von selbst beantwortet.

where that came from. Let’s start with the place’s
history. The region was known as Halicarnassus in
ancient times, and was famed for being home to one of
the seven wonders of the world, the tomb of King
Mausolos, known as the ‘Mausoleum’. Very little
remains of the structure nowadays, regrettably, which
is why it isn’t the main reason Bodrum has turned
into such a popular holiday destination today.
Nowadays, other factors tend to be more important, details such as the amazing sun, sea and
beaches, the food, raki and nightlife. So here we are
sitting on the terrace of the Hotel Marmara, high up
above Bodrum, drinking ice-cold Turkish rosé and
looking down on the white houses, the port filled with
Turkish gulets, or modern cruise ships, heading for
Istanbul, Izmir and other ports throughout the eastern
Mediterranean to connect with the major cruise liners.
On the horizon we can see the Greek island of Kos, and
the setting sun in the distance beyond.
We had spent the day down at the beach in the Bay
of Torba, on the far side of the peninsula. We had laid
beneath large white sunshades and on vast white
lounge cushions, on a generous wooden jetty jutting
far out into the sea, swum in the clear, blue-green
water, watched a seaplane landing and guests being
ferried to one of the sumptuous villas on the coast.
Many of Istanbul’s wealthy elite have their holiday
homes here in Torba, and some are truly impressive
with their outstanding modern architecture. Outside
the houses, you can’t move for Ferraris and Mercedes
limousines.
Perhaps we had travelled around the peninsula as
well. With its chic bars, restaurants and cafés,
Göltürbükü is the favourite town with the jetset in
these parts. In Cumulus, perched on the tip of the
peninsula, time seems to have stood still. Perhaps we
had stayed in Bodrum, and taken a look at the port
and Crusaders’ castle, the fish market and excavations
at the Mausoleum, of course, and the amphitheatre.
Eventually, the question of why Bodrum is as popular
as it is wasn’t a difficult one to answer. In fact, the
place answered it itself.
