2013 was a successful year for the SCHÄFER WERKE group of companies. There was a very
favourable development in all divisions and we are now focussing all our efforts on
continuing this positive trend in 2014.
What has this success been based on? First of all in this connection, we have to mention
our staff, as they are the ones who have dedicated themselves with great motivation and
commitment to achieving our common objectives. Many thanks for this great effort!
Behind this performance are common values and aspirations which unite all divisions in

Secure business processes
at SCHÄFER
The increasing penetration of IT into
all business processes makes us ever more
dependent on the availability of the systems
in operation. However, as the total failure of
the Telekom communications exchange
in Siegen last year made us all so painfully
aware, this increasing interdependence of
economic operating processes also means
increased risks for all business partners.
These risks can only be countered by companies implementing forward-looking infrastructure concepts.
If secure IT-based business processes are to
be guaranteed, a much wider view needs
to be taken. With all the cross-company
processes, especially in the modern supply
chain, focussing solely on the infrastructure
in your own company is no longer sufficient.
Applications and systems of supply-chain
partners and all others involved in the entire
process must be looked at as well.
As an important link in this cross-company
process chain, SCHÄFER WERKE has recognised what is needed and has made massive
investments in IT security solutions over the
last few years. Two new state-of-the-art IT
data centres were built in Neunkirchen and
Betzdorf and SCHÄFER also has so-called
GranITe-Room.cert rooms from the company RZ-Products. These IT security rooms
provide extremely high levels of physical
protection for IT infrastructures.
The in-house expertise of SCHÄFER ITSystems could be used to good effect in the
design, construction and equipment of the
rooms. All data centres were equipped with
modern climate control technology, efficient
early warning fire detection systems and the
latest monitoring functions.
The primary data centre was fitted with an
emergency power generator to guarantee
availability in the event of power failures. The
strong dependence on external network
operators will be eliminated in the coming
months by all German production sites and
the data centres being linked with each
other by means of their own fast microwave
transmission network. This private network
will then provide back-up in the event of a
serious problem in the provider's network
structure. To make internet connectivity
more or less permanent,
a redundant connection is made available
by second provider.
Thanks to these, in
some cases, very costly
measures,
regional
deficits in telecommunications infrastructure
can be remedied for
the benefit of SCHÄFER
customers.
The internal IT environment has also seen considerable investment in
recent years, with the
purpose of increasing
availability and improving processes in emergency situations.

TOP TOPIC
Industrial Solutions
on course for growth
Investment in new machines, increasing the workforce and the introduction of two new product lines
are reinforcing the expansion of our youngest division; SCHÄFER Industrial Solutions.
The SCHÄFER Industrial Solutions
division began life as a manufacturer of
customized special housings and enclosures for industry. The expertise gained in this
division has meanwhile led to the development of two new products, which are
currently being produced in series. Firstly
from 2014, SCHÄFER will be converting
its standard server racks to the IS-1 design,
which was developed by the Industrial
Solutions division. SCHÄFER also produces
customized cabinet solutions based on
the IS-1.
And secondly, also in 2014, SCHÄFER Industrial Solutions will be launching the series
production of a special switching cabinet for
pumps and ventilators. The market maturity
of this cabinet is the result of joint research
and development between SCHÄFER Industrial Solutions and a large globally operating
enterprise. The cabinet is specially tailored to
pumps, ventilator fans and compressors with

square load characteristics and its robust
design makes it ideal for use in the often
rough environment of the energy and water
industries.
Reorganisation and investment
With these new products in mind, SCHÄFER
Industrial Solutions has invested in new
machines and restructured its manufacturing processes. The repositioning of all spot
welding machines reduces the paths the

cabinets have to take from pre-assembly to
the paint shop.
Alterations have also been made to the paint
shop itself and to the chain conveyor.
In the paint shop they resulted in the reduction of plant components and energy input.
A new Trumpf laser cutting machine with
5000 Watts of laser power was purchased, as
well as a robot cell with a sealing foam unit.
This is used for sealing components with PUR
foam, which is also of great importance for
the pump and ventilator cabinets.
To guarantee the efficient operation of
the newly installed equipment, SCHÄFER
Industrial Solutions has provided specific
training for its staff working in this field. All
employees were given on-the-job training
at the different workstations and can now
be employed universally. Young employees
in particular were involved in the alterations
to the assembly lines, and consequently the
division was able to retain three trainees permanently. To further increase efficiency in
the interests of rapid processing of customer
projects, shipping tasks were also transferred
to the group's own service specialists SDL
(SCHÄFER DIENSTLEISTUNGEN).

Organisation
is half the battle
SCHÄFER Interior Systems and SCHÄFER SHOP are offering their customers
an overall concept for archiving systems. The joint project is proving to be a great success.
At the beginning and end of each
year, the task of archiving is on the agenda
for many companies. So a selected group of
SCHÄFER SHOP customers were sent a special
flyer dealing with this very topic – along with
the new annual catalogue containing the top
selling products from all categories.
The shelf units and materials cabinets advertised at special prices in the flyer all come from
the SCHÄFER Interior Systems product range.
And the bonus is that all the cabinet “interiors”, such as standard and suspension files –
all of which come from the SCHÄFER SHOP
range – are included in the price.
SCHÄFER can provide any customer seriously
thinking of investing in archiving with a convenient package to set up an archiving system
which is fast, easy and good value for money.
The reaction among customers seems to suggest that SCHÄFER is onto a winner with this
service-oriented concept, as orders for the

SCHÄFER IT-Systems manufactures
special racks for DATEV
The IT service provider and software producer DATEV has equipped its latest data centre
in Nuremberg with specially designed server racks from SCHÄFER IT-Systems.
This production to customer specification supports their innovative infrastructure concept.
In the latest fitting phase at the fourth
DATEV data centre location, 27 SP server
racks with a Cold Section cold aisle enclosure
were installed. The racks measure 800 x 1,200
x 2,200 millimetres (W x D x H) and supplement the identical SP racks that were installed
in the data centre with two other Cold Section enclosures when it was put into operation in 2011. The constant growth of new
DATEV business fields, such as Application
Service Providing (ASP), IT security and data
back-up solutions and IT outsourcing made
it necessary to extend the data centre area to
1,000 m².
Due to the specific situation in the building
and the structured cabling requirements,
DATEV selected the 800 millimetre racks to
avoid conflict between ventilation and cable
routing. With appropriate cable management aids, provided as rack accessories
by SCHÄFER IT-Systems, the cables were
bundled vertically and horizontally on the
cabinet frame, which allowed the maximum
possible space for warm air outflow and cold
air inflow.
DATEV made use of other accessories to
clearly separate IT cables from power supply
cables. To do so, a cable duct was installed
in the raised floor for the redundant connection of the server racks to the power supply,
while a second duct was installed in the rack
roof for the data cables.
In the current extension work on the data
centre, DATEV also installed a special cold
aisle enclosure which can also accommodate room pillars and electrical distribution
panels, as well as server racks. This had to be
done because of the specific nature of the
power supply in the DATEV data centre.
A redundant uninterruptible power supply
unit was set up by the landlord. The downstream conductor rails to connect to the
electrical distributor were installed by DATEV.
Cold-Section cold aisle enclosure to support the infrastructure concept
For connecting the 27 server racks, redundant electrical distributor panels were also
installed.
With production to specification and preassembly, SCHÄFER IT-SYSTEMS contributed
the tight installation schedule for the new
components being maintained. Profile rails,
partitions, shelves and cable guiding rings
were all assembled in advance according
to a carefully worked out plan. More time
was saved by the drill holes in the rack roofs,
needed for fixing the IT cable ducts along the
top of the racks, also being made in advance
in the SCHÄFER IT-Systems production plant.

Profiting from innovative features:
the SCHÄFER IS-1 rack solution
The people who profit from our continuous innovation and the uncompromising improvement of SCHÄFER products are
customers and users. If products are discontinued, it’s always done to create technical
or economic benefits for them. The IS-1, the
new range of 19-inch IT cabinets for server
and network components, is replacing
SCHÄFER IT-Systems’ classical SP racks.
Maintaining the external height of two metres
means that the IS-1 can be integrated into
existing SP rack installations. With 43U at a
height of 2,000 mm, the IS-1 offers more
height units than its predecessor and has a
greater useable internal width. Thanks to its
profiled framework, the cabinet is very strong,
with a load bearing capacity of 1500 kilos, and
it is also designed to enable extremely
fast assembly. After a changeover period,
SCHÄFER IT-Systems will be presenting the
entire new range of IS-1 products in a new
catalogue.

The ★★★★★ Data Centre: “full speed ahead”
Due to the great success in the previous year, SCHÄFER IT-Systems is again presenting an information event on the subject of “the 5-Star Data Centre”. In two podium discussions, experts from SCHÄFER, Wagner, E-Tec, Stulz, Datwyler and eco-Verband, will be
dealing with the topics of “Scalability of data centres and data centre conversion”, “Planning and construction of small data centres and server rooms” and “Data centre service and
maintenance”. But there's something special about this year’s event: In keeping with the
slogan “The 5-Star Data Centre: full speed ahead”, the venue is on board of a ship. On June
24th in Frankfurt am Main, SCHÄFER IT-Systems will be welcoming their guests on board an

A SCHÄFER KEG with its very
own signature
Breweries are increasingly becoming aware that beer packaging makes a
significant contribution to building the brand. In this respect, the ECO KEG from
SCHÄFER Container Systems has an enormous potential.
The ECO KEG is the combination of
a stainless steel liner with exchangeable
top and bottom rings of coloured polypropylene. The branding colours for the
rings can be chosen by customers and they
can then be provided with illustrious slogans or labels as required. Decoration can
be applied to the stainless steel surfaces
on the top, bottom or side of the Keg by
means of spray painting, silk screening, laser
printing, labels/sleeves or electro-chemical
signature.
For applying the electro-chemical signature, SCHÄFER Container Systems has a
highly specialised manufacturing robot. In
this process, any image, such as the brewery
slogan or logo, can be applied to the KEG’s
metal surface directly in the shortest
possible time. It looks more like die
stamping than printing and in fact, the
electro-chemical signature is actually a
related process. The impression is one
of high quality and it makes the KEG unmistakable, in the truest sense of the word.
In America, too, customizing ECO KEGs is
growing more and more popular. In the
booming American craft brewers market,
small breweries need to be very distinctive
to be noticed and KEG design can make
an important contribution. The ECO KEG
offers ambitious, marketing-oriented craft
breweries the chance to establish themselves as a brand in the minds of their
customers very quickly.

The self service
Party-KEG
For fresh draught beer, whatever the occasion
The features that make the ECO KEG ideal
for price-sensitive small breweries are its
particularly economical costing and the
logistics benefits. ECO KEGs are lighter
than conventional stainless steel KEGs and
their intelligent design enables them to be
stacked in a space saving manner. A 36 %
weight saving means 6 % more load in a
40-foot container and the low material use
contributes to saving resources. The shockabsorber effect of the polypropylene top
and bottom rings prevents damage if the
KEG is dropped, as they allow it to bounce
when it hits the ground.

With the name Party-KEG, SCHÄFER
Container Systems now produces a new
keg type, in sizes of 10, 15, and 20 litres
with all current neck and fitting types, to
provide fresh draught beer on all manner
of occasions. With a bung hole to take a
tap, this keg enables all revellers to tap their
own beer at parties or other events. A
special spring valve closes the keg automatically, once the tap is removed, which
makes it very convenient to use. The insulating keg coating of CFC-free polyurethane
(PU) keeps the beer cool and fresh for several hours. Designs of one or more colours
can be printed on the coating or the entire
coating can be printed with the brewery
logo, for example.
The beer’s freshness and the self-service
idea of filling your own glass have led to
these Party-KEGs achieving high levels of
acceptance among consumers.
For breweries, the keg offers the prospect
of increasing turnover, because, as a rule,
people tend to consume more on occasions when beer is on draught rather than
in bottles.
With this new Party-KEG, SCHÄFER
Container Systems is helping breweries
tap into this turnover potential. And customizing the kegs’ design in the breweries’
colours and logo makes them ideal brand
ambassadors. Besides, the PU-coating
offers a range of logistic benefits, as these
robust and stable kegs can be stacked and
transported very easily.

SCHÄFER extends
container manufacturing
SCHÄFER Container Systems is investing in new machines and welding equipment
for the production of stainless steel containers at the Ledeč nad Sázavou plant in the
Czech Republic.
This is the company’s response to the
continually increasing demand for containers
for special requirements, such as transporting hazardous goods and aseptic reusable
containers in the food sector.
The production plant in Ledeč nad Sázavou
has traditionally had a high level of welding
expertise, covering both manual skills and
automated methods with the latest machines. In 1995, the German-Czech joint venture SCHÄFER SUDEX s.r.o. began in Ledeč
nad Sázavou with the production of stainless steel KEGs for the international beverage
industry.
Since 2002, stainless steel containers have
also been manufactured here and the positive development and rapid growth of this
business area soon required the extension of
production capacities.

The construction of a new production hall in
2004 set the company on course for further

SCHÄFER Container Systems is bringing
its manufacturing facilities up to the latest
technical standard. Another hall was built in
2013 to create space for a new generation
of welding robots for container production.
This extension offers the opportunity to
introduce the latest technologies and also to
reorganise work processes more efficiently,
as it also includes a warehouse for storing

Transformer casings for substations and intercity express trains come from Bad Marienberg (Westerwald).
Every month, MENK Apparatebau GmbH processes 4,500 tons of steel – some of it from the EMW Steel Service Centre.
Casing with cooling fins for cooling oil

A company with a long tradition, MENK
was founded in 1949 has gained a leading
position worldwide in a number of sectors.
The company specialises in large-scale products made of steel. At its headquarters in
Bad Marienberg, Menk doesn’t only manufacture the casings for transformers, but also
corrugated oil tanks and cooling radiators.
Five other plants with different specialisations in the USA, Malaysia, China, as well as
in Prague and Plzen in the Czech Republic,
produce motor casings, containers and parts
for mobile cranes, excavators and mining
ma-chinery. From its various locations, MENK

New circular blanking machine at EMW
Like SCHÄFER, MENK is also characterised
by the culture of the small or medium-sized
business, which focuses on manufacturing
quality and customer relationships based on
partnership. The Czech subsidiary SchäferMenk s.r.o. carries the organisational connection with SCHÄFER WERKE in its name, while
the companies in America and Asia operate
under the name of MENK.
Business relations between MENK and EMW
have existed since 1976. EMW only supplies
the main plant in Bad Marienberg, but the
short 30 km distance from Siegerland to
Westerwald means there are great logistics
benefits for MENK and they can profit from
EMW’s great storage capacity, which then
relieves the burden on their own capacities.
The actual logistics process is carried out
by an external freight forwarding company
which organises the on-demand integration of the steel into the MENK production
process. In 2013, EMW supplied around 5,000
tons of cold rolled, non-lubricated slit strips
and coils of various dimensions for MENK cooling radiators.

The EMW Steel Service Centre has
extended its service range and will be
supplying circular blanks as of now. The
new servo circular blank cutting machine
in the Steel Service Centre manufactures
circular blanks from all metal types. The
round discs made of steel, stainless steel
or aluminium are used to manufacture
all manner of different products, such as
hub caps, satellite dishes, beer kegs,
housings for brake boosters, frying pans
or traffic signs.
EMW’s machine can cut metal sheet of
between 0.75 and 4 mm in thickness and
the product range includes blanks of up to
730 millimetres in diameter. As the blanks
are cut straight from the coil, no preslitting is required. EMW’s preference for
mechanical cutting with a pressing force
of 250 tons is superior to laser cutting in
terms of speed and economic efficiency,
as laser lines take much longer to produce
the same number of blanks. In addition,
EMW’s so-called scrap-optimised stamping not only contributes to a good price/
performance ratio, but also to eco-friendly
and sustainable production.
The circular blanks are then packaged
and dispatched in customized formats
and batch sizes, exactly as the customer
ordered.

Great variety in
machining service
SCHÄFER Perforated Metal is investing in a sheet metal working centre for customer solutions
and has extended its service range for perforated metal sheets.
At the company’s main plant in Neunkirchen/Siegerland, another punching and
nibbling machine from the sector’s leading
manufacturer Amada was installed.
In addition to six wide presses, the production machinery includes sheet processing
lines, a punching centre, a laser cutting line,
a stud welding system and machines for
powder coating and foam sealing. Investments were also made in other manufacturing machines and tools. The plant’s new
equipment doesn’t only extend the nature
of the range in the field of perforated sheet
machining.
With its broad manufacturing spectrum,
SCHÄFER Perforated Metal can fulfil almost
all machining demands of its customers
from a single source: laser cutting, notching,

Other processing possibilities available on request
So that perforated sheets from customers
can be processed quickly without any
delays, they must fulfil specific standards
in each individual case. Stainless steel perforated sheets for a screening line in food
processing must be completely grease-free,
whereas perforated facade sheets for a new
football stadium in club colours need to be
powder coated. The machined perforated
sheet solutions are then integrated precisely
into SCHÄFER customers’ workflow. Both in
its machining service and in the field of perforation patterns SCHÄFER Perforated Metal
is keen to work together with customers to
develop new product design possibilities for
realising unique solutions.
400 different perforation patterns is the
standard range of choice for SCHÄFER
Perforated Metal customers, and on top of
this, SCHÄFER develops perforated sheets to
customer specifications. This doesn’t only
apply to perforations for entire coils, but
also for cut-to-size blanks. Sheets of up to
1,500 mm in width and 6,000 mm long can
be manufactured on customer request with
strip perforations, field perforations, a combination of both or with perforation-free
edges.

Successful training at SCHÄFER
The results of the final exams at the end of the training period
have once again been well above average and the start into working
life at SCHÄFER went smoothly for our former trainees. The 14 new
trainees in 7 different professions were welcomed to the Pfannenberg on August 1st. to begin their training and on December 20th,
2013, the management invited them to the Christmas party in the
workshop.
After a few words from Mr. Theo Schäfer to his young apprentices, presents were handed out by the company management. In reply, the
trainees’ representatives expressed their thanks and appreciation.
Tributes to long-serving staff
The management of SCHÄFER WERKE and of EMW would like to thank all those celebrating long-service anniversaries for
their many years of support and commitment.

Helping fellow citizens directly
SCHÄFER WERKE supports the Neunkirchen food banks
Since October 2007, there
has been a food bank in Neunkirchen, a society that takes perfectly
good food that has been thrown
away by retailers and distributes
it to those in need. The Neunkirchen food bank is the result of a
private initiative supported by the
Christian community and the food
distribution takes place on their
premises. It is perhaps surprising
that a food bank is even necessary
in a community like Neunkirchen,
which can hardly be called poor.
And yet, there are people living in
poverty for a variety of different
reasons. When the Schäfer family
first heard this, some family members immediately decided to support the food bank by helping
actively or donating money or
supplies. The food bank cafe also
provides the opportunity for conversation and reflection. And, of
course, regular donations are made
by SCHÄFER WERKE to ensure the
food bank can continue its good
work.

Environmental and energy management:
Certified according to DIN ISO 50001
Work to introduce an energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001
was successfully completed in September
2013, with the certification of SCHÄFER
WERKE GMBH, EMW Stahl Service GmbH
and SCHÄFER Ausstattungs-Systeme
GmbH by the TÜV Rhineland.
The energy management system organises the procedures for energy data acquisition, identification of relevant consumers
and monitoring energy consumption. Any
deviations are systematically identified
and permanently remedied.
Energy-saving efforts are supported efficiently by clearly defined energy targets
which are then pursued persistently and
constantly evaluated.
All the company’s employees received an
information leaflet as part of the certification process, calling on them to actively
support our efforts to save energy.
Increased efficiency through energy
metering
Knowing your own energy consumption is
the basis for energy-efficient operation. If
you know what you use, you’ll know where
you can reduce it. That’s why setting up a
network for measuring energy data was
one of the first tasks of the energy management team in introducing the energy
management system. The first step was
installing heat and gas meters in the heating systems at the Betzdorf and Pfannen-
berg sites. The data acquired here led to a
series of energy saving measures in the first
few months and helped to optimize the
newly installed heating systems and the
CHP plant for the administration and production buildings in Neunkirchen, making
them as energy-efficient as possible. In the
next few months, electricity meters will be
installed at various points,
to enable a more precise
assessment of the production
machines’ energy consumption.
All readings can be retrieved
by radio on an hourly basis and
stored and processed on a server.
The data can also be accessed via
a WEB interface. From this data, a
monthly energy report can be
compiled, which can then be presented to the responsible “energy
managers” in the various divisions.
Any deviations from normal consumption levels will be recognised
early, enabling corrective action to
be taken immediately.
