The pair were Short Stirrup Hunter Champions at the TWA Hunter Series at Hazelwild Farm, and Tillie also took the Short Stirrup Eq. reserve for the series. TWA Horse Shows By Gegi Winslett We wrapped up our very successful winter show series with a Jumper show on March 5 and a Hunter show on March 6, and presented the series-end awards at those shows. In many cases, the point standings for those awards were very close, so this year I decided to recognize riders and horses beyond those that were first (champion) and second (reserve) in each division by giving “honorable mention” awards to those who were close behind the in points. Winners had to have attended at least three of the five shows to qualify. Many of the divisions were very competitive with strong turnout throughout the series. Congratulations to all! With warmer-than-average temperatures climbing into the mid-70s, many sought shade beneath the trees of the idyllic Oatland’s Plantation’s driveway and crowded the rails to watch the horses and riders make their way onto the course. The fine weather brought out the largest crowd in recent years to view and enjoy the Point-to-Point races. The day featured two Exhibition races, as well as six carded races, all run over Oatland’s beautiful grounds. The length of each contest ranged from 1 ¼ miles to 3 ½ miles. Races were run over hurdles, timber, and on the flat and tested the mettle of the horses and their jockeys. With courses that traverse both sides of the driveway, observers could not miss the sound of thundering hooves and that final, thrilling run to the finish. A highlight again of the Loudoun Hunt Point-to-Point this year was the secondrunning of the Mrs. George C. Everhart Memorial SideSaddle Race. Inaugurated last year at the Races, the contest has now expanded to other race meets including Mr. Stewart’s Cheshire Foxhounds Pointto-Point, held in March. This year’s running of the Mrs. Photo courtesy: ValerieDurbonPhotography.com By Carroll D. Galvin At Loudoun Hunt’s Annual Point-to-Point races held at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Va. on April 17, the winner of the crowdpleasing George C. Everhart Memorial Side-Saddle race jumping division was Fort Henry with rider Susan Oakes. George C. Everhart Memorial first race ran over a course of Side-Saddle Race provided the nearly two miles, featuring six ladies (and the spectators) with fences. For warmblood horse breeders Susan Lynch and Francis L Swift, Jr., of Shepherd Farm in Gaithersburg, Maryland, it came on Susan’s subway ride to her “day job” as an attorney in Washington D.C. It was 2007 and the horse market was pretty soft, but Lynch thought that there would still be plenty of people who would want to own well-bred performance prospects from the time they were foals. But many of these potential owners might not have a mare to breed, and they might not want to do a traditional lease of a broodmare if they didn’t have a place to cost-effectively board and care for the mare. So Lynch began offering leases of her Hanoverian and Oldenburg mares, allowing clients to choose a stallion to breed to the selected mare, and pay a flat fee for the lease. The mares remain at Shepherd Farm, and the client owns the resulting foal. Board of the foal (including daily handling and training) for its first four months is included in the lease. The client pays all breeding-related expenses; Shepherd Farm covers the cost of all other care of the mare during pregnancy. Since its beginning, Shepherd Farm’s broodmare lease program has produced about 25 foals, according to Lynch, mostly as prospects for serious amateur riders, typically for dressage and eventing. One foal, though, was bred to be a jumper and demonstrated its aptitude by jumping a five-foot fence from a standstill at the age of six weeks, Lynch recalls. Lynch also has a client in Manitoba, Canada who produced several foals from the Shepherd Farm mares and used those horses as the foundation stock for their own warmblood breeding program. Some broodmare lease clients want to be very involved in the birth of the foal, Lynch says, Continued on p. 39 Horse 15% - 80% off everything (15% off storewide and up to 80% off in the tent) • Free giveaways and free raffle • $5 spaces available - bring your own items to sell and make some $$ (BYO table) • Multiple registers for quick check-out • Returns accepted within 30 days for store credit or exchange • Discounts do not apply to consignments A full service tack shop located in the Olney/Burtonsville area Monday-Friday 10-7 Saturday-Sunday10-5 301-421-5954 www.Anytimetack.com anytimetack@verizon.net 16301 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20905 Times Vol. 8, Issue 2 11 Loudoun Hunt PO Box 224 Leesburg, VA 20178 www.loudounhunt.com MFH: Lawrence T. He also excels in dressage and has taken a beginner student to second place in Beginner Novice at the student’s first horse trials. Like all the lesson horses, he is patient, predictable, easy to get along with and loves attention. By Shannon Sollinger The real heroes of any lesson program are the horses and ponies who toil away five days a week, introducing beginners to life aboard and taking more advanced students to shows and over hill and dale (and creeks and coops and posts and rails) after the elusive fox. Where do they come from? Several Loudoun Fairfax Hunt members shared their secrets of where to find that perfect lesson horse and pony. Heather Heider, Van Vixen Farm; Christine Vitkus, Red Gate Farm; and Lacy Warner, Dream Catcher Equine, ride to hounds and devote nearly every other waking hour to introducing children and adults to horses and horse sports. Photo courtesy: Shannon Sollinger They all agree on one thing: The lesson horse must be predictable (at least 95 percent, Christine said), he has to like the job, and he has to be easy to get along with. “Looks is the last of all the criteria,” Christine emphasized. “’Pretty’ is NOT as ‘pretty does.’ Buy the happy horse who likes the job.” Red Gate brings in five or six different instructors, each focusing on different aspects of horsemanship, so her lesson horses must be multitaskers. When she started in 2003, Christine recalled, she had to answer ads to put her lineup (540) 955-6219 together. She looked for older horses priced at not more than $2,500, and favored Quarter Horses and draft crosses “that tend to be quieter.” As her program developed and gained recognition, “I got many for free. People would hear of it and if they had a horse they thought might work, they’d call and I’d evaluate.” Pluses were patience – a lesson can last 45 minutes or more and if the rider has to turn the horse while he waits his turn, that horse won’t make the cut. “And all of them are friendly, easy to catch, love people and get along with other horses.” An overly dominant horse, one that is in the habit of leaving bites and kick marks on his pasture mates, won’t fit in either. She’s moved two of those on to other jobs over the years. The deal breaker? “Unsoundness so that I can’t ethically use the horse. If I can’t make a horse comfortable and happy to do his job, I can’t do that.” The best school horses, she Continued on p. 27 Hoof & Paw Veterinary Service 211S.20thSt.,Purcellville,VA20132 Discount Health Care Packages ~ 24 hour Emergency Service Digital X-Ray and Ultrasound ~ Comprehensive Purchase Exams Shannon DeArmas, DVM • CompetedtoFEIlevelsin Dressage • Trainedstallionsat100 daytests • Specialinterestsin Ophthalmologyand • WoundCare • 16yrsequineveterinary experience Paula Alves Horne, DVM • 30+yrsequineveterinaryexperience • PonyClubNationalExaminer andGraduate HA • AAEPEthicsCommitteeMember • ServedonMarionDuPontScottEquine MedicalCenterAdvisoryBoard • FoundingMemberInternationalSocietyof EquineLocomotivePathology • ExtensiveContinuingEducationin DentistryandUltrasonography • CompetedtoPreliminarylevelUSEA Dr. Theresa Brown, BVSc and Dr. Katy Wilson, DVM Our Small Animal Hospital specialized in personalized and professional pet care. There are divisions for Thoroughbreds at all stages of retraining, from right off the track through seasoned horses, including Pleasure, Hunters and Jumpers (Cross Rail through 3 ft.), Dressage and Eventing Suitability, In Hand, and more. Year-end awards include division awards, plus High-Point Adopted Horse, Listing Service, Green Horse, War Horse, and State Bred. To compete for these awards, horses must be registered with TIP and show under their Jockey Club names. Registration is FREE but horses must be nominated BY MAIL OR ONLINE prior to the first show in order to be eligible for Year-End awards. Points are not retroactive. The 2016 series kicked off with the TB Heritage Show at Rosemount Farm in Spotsylania, Va., on April 24, a favorite amongst competitors. The second show in the series is the Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue All Thoroughbred Benefit, at Tranquillity Manor Farms in Monkton, Md. on June 4. This is a popular show for Thoroughbreds and their riders, and is well suited for green horses just starting their sporting careers as well as seasoned horses and riders. The atmosphere is welcoming and laid back, with a strong sense of camaraderie amongst Thoroughbred lovers who travel from throughout the region to compete. Tranquillity Manor is a great new venue for this show. There are two large rings plus a warm up ring and an outside course. Classes are offered for hunters and jumpers, as well as pleasure and in-hand. Eventers and dressage riders will feel right at home in the suitability classes. In the afternoon, field hunters will take to the outside course, Continued on p. 37 Horse THE HUNT IS OVER - Exceptional land nestled between large established farms and historic properties. The team will work closely with EMC faculty, referring veterinarians and farriers, to help make diagnoses, alleviate pain and provide therapeutic shoeing for horses with problematic feet and/or joint pain. “This is very special. Having vets and farriers working closely together, is so much more effective and helpful for both the owner and the horse,” said Goodness, who will be joined by his son, certified farrier Luke Goodness, and a team of assistant farriers. “There are few other places in the country where full-time farriers and veterinarians come together to treat horses under one roof.” Paul Goodness, a certified journeyman farrier with the American Farrier’s Association, has been shoeing horses for four decades. His sport horse shoeing practice, Forging Ahead, attracted clients and farriers from all over the country. In the past, Goodness served as the United States Equestrian Team farrier between 1992 and 1996, and participated in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. At the EMC, Goodness and his team will provide lameness consultation and therapeutic shoeing for patients in a fully equipped shop that includes all-weather work stalls and additional holding stalls. “Paul and his team are among the most highly regarded and advanced farriers in the Paul Goodness country,” said Dr. Erskine. “They are a perfect fit here at the EMC where our culture of caring and collaboration ensures the best treatment and services for our clients.” The farrier shop will be open Monday through Friday, from 8a.m.-5p.m. Scheduling is done through the EMC admission’s desk. 10849 Flowerstone St, Oakton, VA 22124 EQUE S TR IAN COM M UN IT Y 5 Bedrooms, 5.5 Baths, 6,326 sq. ft. of Living Space. The inaugural running in 2015 drew considerable interest from the public (think “Downton Abbey”) and provided a unique experience which did not disappoint again this year. Winning the Jumping Division was Fort Henry, ridden by Susan Oakes, owned and trained by Stephanie Boyer. The Flat Division was won by Figure It Out, ridden by Cathi Groves, owned and trained by Christina Mulqueen. Entries in the TriSept Challenge Maiden Hurdle forced a split division with the first division win going to Easy Exit, ridden by Kieran Norris, and the second division to Reporter, ridden by Sean McDermott. In the Wells Fargo/Land Trust of Virginia Open Hurdle, Orchestra Leader, ridden also by Sean McDermott, took home the prize. In the Audi Of America, Inc. Novice Timber, Duc de Savoie, ridden by Mark Beecher, bested two close rivals to cross the finish line as the winner. Excitement abounded in the William Corcoran Eustis Cup Open Timber, perhaps the toughest contest of the day. Only two of a field of six successfully completed the race which features multiple post-and-rail timber fences and a formidablystout stone wall fence. Zanclus, ridden by Kieran Norris, came away victorious. The fifth race, the Dale Lumber Company Open Flat, was won by Classical Art, ridden to victory by Darren Nagel. As the day drew to a close, in the Virginia Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association Virginia Bred/Sired Flat race, Gumper, ridden by Teresa Croce, took the lead in the last sixteenth to win the day. Sponsors of this year’s races included Audi of America, Inc., TriSept Corporation, Wells Fargo, the Land Trust of Virginia, Dale Lumber Company, and the Virginia Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. Horse Times Lesson horses...........from p.15 added, are those that figure out who their rider is and sense if it’s not a secure rider. “I’ve had horses who balance a rider back on.” Over the years, four rescues have joined the farm with no advance evaluations – it was take them now or they’re gone. Three of the four worked out as lessons horses. The fourth? He bucked at the canter, no matter who was on him. Christine moved him on to a walk-trot trail rider where he’s happy and his rider is safe. “If they don’t work out or if they get sour to the point I can’t fix it,” Christine said, “I find a private owner where they will be happy and thrive.” She thinks that for many older horses that have aged out of their primary jobs, the lesson life adds years to their lives. “They get ridden five days a week, their manes are pulled, they are bathed and fussed over and the students bring them treats. They get a much greater level of attention than a retiree, as a rule, gets.” She lets the horses tell her, Christine said, if they want to be here or not. One of her best school horses is Paddy, an Irish Sport Horse who hunted first field for years but could no longer keep up or handle the bigger fences in the field. “Paddy is patient. I can put a dead beginner on him and can also put him in the ring with a rider for a 2’6” course. He also does the eventing camp and carried a young beginner in his first horse trials to second place in beginner novice. He’s so gentle we use him for our preschool camp and we use him bareback day.” And he’s a free lease. Reuben, a Dutch Warmblood stalwart of the Red Gate program, came via a tip from her farrier. He knew the horse needed a new job reported that “he’s a really quiet horse when I do his feet. Want to try him?” Sure! At Red Gate’s first show of 2016 student Liz Ricker piloted Reuben to Champion in the Student Equitation Division, and Paddy, Melissa Swanchara at the controls, was third. And Rueben gave an abject lesson in how a really good school horse performs: lacking impulsion into one of two combinations, he happily ran out. He teaches the students to keep riding all the time. A great school horse. Heather Heider has been riding and teaching her whole life, and in 2009 when she retired from publishing, she was pregnant and had one older daughter. Time to stay home with the kids, she said, and she put on a summer camp to cheer up neighborhood kids whose friend had passed away. The program at Van Vixen started in earnest in 2011. “I had ponies my daughter had shown, ponies people let me borrow and hunt horses in the off season. These races are a living link back to the days when fast horses flew over open country while the local folks cheered them on. The first running of the Warrenton Hunt Point-to-Point Races was held on March 24, 1934. Some things have changed since those days, but much remains the same. At the core, what drew people to the hunt races all those years ago still draws folks today. Tailgate parties abound: tasty food and drink, the company of good friends, a beautiful outdoor setting, and an action-packed schedule of horseracing up close and personal. It’s partying, throwback-style. The rainy, cold weather put a bit of a damper on the proceedings for the spectators at the 75th running of the Warrenton Hunt Point-to-Point, held at the Airlie racecourse on Saturday, March 19. Horsemen, however, are a hardy breed; and they came and raced in spite of the weather. Nine races were run with good fields and many exciting performances. This racecourse has always been a favorite for trainer Doug Fout. The fact that the date is perfect to prep horses for the upcoming season of sanctioned races makes it easy to understand why Fout brought several van loads of horses. His eleven runners were nearly a fourth of the horses that ran, and he was rewarded with three wins, two seconds and two third place finishers. Fout started with a bang in the first race as he saddled Virginia B. Judges this year are Sue Sisco (Hunters), Steuart Pittman (Jumpers, Dressage and Eventing Suitability), and a special guest judge TBA for Field Hunters on the outside course. This show is known for great ribbons, prizes, and trophies for each division, and High-Point awards for Mares, Geldings, Hunters, Jumpers, Adopted Horses, etc. Jockey Club TIP classes and awards are also offered. The MAHR All Thoroughbred Benefit Show is one of the largest fundraisers of the year for MidAtlantic Horse Rescue, a 501c3 non-profit organization, fully accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. Located in Chesapeake City, Md., MAHR rescues Thoroughbreds from kill pens and feed lots, and transitions Thoroughbreds off the track. After careful evaluation, horses are placed in loving homes as pleasure and sport horses. For more information, please visit MidAtlanticHorseRescue.org. The June 4 show is followed a week later with the Loch Moy TB Show in Adamstown, Md. Riders across the region know Loch Moy is the site of numerous premier horse trials and shows. This show is being run in conjunction with the popular Sugar Loaf Mountain Horse Show Series. From there it is on to the Totally Thoroughbred Show at Pimlico on July 17th, held in the infield at the famous racecourse. Totally TB’s feature event is the $7500- Hilltop Stables Jumper Speed Stake at 3’7”. In August, the series moves to the Howard County Fair TB Show and the Maryland State Fair Thoroughbred Show. Both offer hunters and jumpers, plus all of the fun of county and state fairs. The series wraps up at a new venue on September 10th -- Breezy Hill Mainly (540) 955-6219 Photo courtesy: Rough Coat Photography www.HorseTimes.net Rehabilitating an OTTB can pose challenges, but most, with patience, can become successfully re-trained. Thoroughbred in Church Hill, Md. Breezy Hill has recently refurbished their ring with new and improved footing, and is the last chance to accumulate year end points. A portion of the proceeds from these shows are donated to various 501c3 Thoroughbred rescue and aftercare organizations. Since the start, these shows have raised over $50,000 for aftercare programs. Because of the support of our exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers, and friends, retiring racehorses are the winners. Hanoverian mare Farethewel (Sire: ES Wertherson Dam: EM Treveri) is available for a Broodmare Lease at Shepherd Farm. Mares........................from p.11 and she and her husband Fran welcome them to come stay at their farm as foaling time approaches. “We had some people come from Vermont with all this maple syrup” to see their foal arrive, she says. Lynch uses her 14-plus years of breeding experience to advise clients on stallion selection. The foals that Susan and Fran have produced for themselves and for their clients have proven their quality with successes in breeding competitions. In 2009, Lynch’s mare EM Leeandra (born at the farm in 2003) won the competitive American Hanoverian Society Mid-Atlantic Breeder’s Association Inspection and Mare Performance Test, held in Waterford, Va. She received nationally competitive scores, including a perfect “10” for “overall impression.” The Site Judge commented that giving a score of 10 is “extremely rare but well deserved in this case.” When her clients purchase a breeding to a stallion, they typically receive a “live foal guarantee” from the stallion owner. While Lynch has never lost a foal in her broodmare lease program, if a mare fails to get in foal within a practical time frame, Lynch will extend the lease into the following breeding season at no additional charge. Lynch summarizes her broodmare lease program as a “win, win, win” for all involved. She and Swift have the pleasure of producing well-bred foals at their farm. Her clients share in the fun of having a baby with bloodlines of their choosing, that they can train from the ground up. And with the handling and training the foals get at Shepherd Farm, they leave with the very best kind of start a baby can have in life. Farm Package Policies Mortality Insurance Surgical Only Loss of Use Infertility Equine General Liability Care, Custody, and Control Individual Horse Owners Riding Instructors Trainers Warmblood/Draft Crosses In recent years, Sheperd Farm has been producing Warmblood/ Percheron crosses out of their registered Percheron mare Lydia Mae. Lydia was purchased as a foal to be the “eyes” for an older Percheron mare who Lynch and Swift had adopted. They trained Lydia Mae to wear a bell and the blind mare followed her. Lydia Mae has been bred three times to the pinto warmblood stallions Hall of Fame and Sempatico, and has produced babies with fancy enough movement to do well in dressage, and with the sanity and courage to make them suitable for eventing and foxhunting, according to Lynch. The yearling colt pictured, Hilltopper LS, is out of Lydia Mae, by Sempatico and is for sale. Warrenton Hunt......from p.33 Kieran Norris up. Dreamin Fool set the pace with Celtic Venure’s Prima Facie (Jeff Murphy) close behind. These two battled to the finish where Dreamin Fool prevailed by a length. Fout greeted Norris in the winners’ circle again after Sharon Sheppard’s Imperial Rule won the third race. Imperial Rule made most of the running and led into the stretch. Betsy B. Mead’s So Far Away rallied but fell short by one length. So Far Away is also trained by Fout. Fout completed his hat trick when Magalen O. Bryant’s Last Farewell (Dylan McDonagh) won the novice rider flat race over Mrs. Bryant’s Plated (Wladimir Rocha). Plated had the lead with a half mile to run but could not hold off Last Farewell, who proved best approaching the finish. The open timber race attracted a strong five-horse field that included three sanctioned winners. Gordonsdale Farm’s Canyon Road had won here a year ago in the novice race and finished last season as the Virginia and Maryland novice timber champion, but this was a big step up in class. In the race Canyon Road (Mark Beecher) was reserved off the pace, but with seven furlongs to run Beecher let out a notch and quickly assumed command. His 15 length winning margin over sanctioned stakes winner Arcadia Stable’s Delta Park (Connor Hankin) proved that Canyon Road belongs in this company. Longtime Gordonsdale trainer Chris Kolb saddled the winner. Connor Hankin had better luck in the amateur and novice rider timber race when he rode Bruton Street-US’s Two’s Company for trainer Jack Fisher. Two’s Company stalked Holwood Stable’s Sky Count (Mark Beecher), who set much of the pace. These two were heads apart with a half mile to run, but that didn’t last long as Two’s Company drew away to win easily by six lengths. Mark Beecher got his second win in the novice timber race with Otter Racing’s Le Chevalier. Beecher was content to let the others in the five-horse field make the early running. When asked, Le Chevalier responded to lead over the last fence and held off Rock Ford Stables LLC’s Gun Point through the stretch to win by ½ length. Julie Gomena saddled the first two finishers. Novice rider Erin Swope had better luck, winning the amateur/novice rider hurdle race. She had finished first in this race at Blue Ridge the week before only to be disqualified when she lost her lead pad during the race. Stephany W. S. Harper’s Outlaw Cody Z (Erika Taylor) finished second but was no match for the winner. Noble Stables’ Kingofalldiamonds (Jacob Roberts) was never far off the pace in the open flat race. He took the lead with about a quarter mile to run and held Virginia B. Lazenby’s Hardrock Eleven safe by ½ length. Neil Morris was the winning trainer. In the Virginia-bred flat race Quest Realty’s Gumper (Teresa Croce) was a close third in the four-horse field in the early stages. With a quarter mile to run he went to the front and won handily by 4 lengths over Kinross Farm’s More Tea Vicar (Michael Mitchell). Susan Cooney trained the winner. The members of the Warrenton Hunt would like to thank all those who volunteered their time to make these races possible; the owners, trainers, and riders who braved the weather for the sake of competition; and the dedicated followers who ignored the unpleasant weather and partied on! They all do trail rides and hunter paces and shows.” Several carried her students to the finals of last year’s Junior North American Field Hunter Championship. “I teach more than riding here,” she added. “I teach how to be a good horseman. At the pony camps for beginners, we have one instructor per kid for the younger beginners, and I’ve had 250 kids through those camps. My number one concern when a horse is in the ring is that he’s happy. If he’s not happy, the rider is doing something wrong. Is he stopping? He knows he’s going to get hit in the mouth or something hurts. My priority is that they are healthy and feel good.” Loudoun Fairfax’s Lacy Warner (“the kid who would never leave the barn”) has been bringing along young riders for nine years at Over The Grass Farm in Marshall and on May 1 will be in business on her own as Dream Catcher Equine at Ballina Stables in Rectortown. She will continue to work on the skills she emphasized at Over The Grass -- getting out in the field, fox hunting, hunter shows and lower level eventing New and Used Saddle Sales I come to you and your horse! Get the right fit for both of you. Irish Sport Horse Paddy retired from first field fox hunting and is a pillar of the Red Gate Farm lesson program. Here, he carries Melissa Swanchara in the Student Equitation Division at a recent Red Gate show. in the off season. She’ll be adding more disciplines for adults, some of whom aim for the walk-trot trail ride. “My goal is the fun ride with a safe, confident rider.” She’s in the process of putting together her string of school horses. She’s already benefited from several that were free and she’s looking for about 10 lesson horses. Her friend, 19-year old Katie Malone, from Scotland (she rode in Loudoun Fairfax’s recent junior day), hops on to test drive the prospects that pass the initial lameness-temperament test. “I like to put a good rider but not a professional on the prospect to see how the horse acts.” Deal breakers are the same as anyone else: lameness, aggression to people or horses. Lacy wants the nice, quiet ones, “and that eliminates about half the prospects.” And she needs a range of sizes, horses to fit longlegged teenagers, adults and young children. She’s willing to do some training and mileage, Lacy said, with the “ones that have the brain and willingness. Working hard is part of the job and they have to be one ones that want to do it.” And appearance? “I’m not looking to compete at A shows. If they look cute it’s a bonus.” Katie added, “Sometimes the pretty ones are the naughtiest.” Horse Saddle Fitting Services for All Brands of Saddles, All Disciplines of Riders On site adjustments, flocking and balancing. Horse Times 7/19/11 10:48 AM Blue Ridge Point-to-Point www.HorseTimes.net (540) 955-6219 At This Year’s Annual Event, Weather Conditions Were Favorable The Blue Ridge Hunt’s annual Point-to-Point races are always scheduled relatively early in the steeplechasing season (mid-March) and because of that, it is not uncommon for weather conditions to require their postponement to a later date. This year, much to the surprise of many, a dry spell made for firm footing at the Woodley Farm course, near Berryville, Va., and the races were a “go” on their scheduled date of March 12. Nine races over hurdles, timber and on the flat were run. Photographer Valerie Durbon was on hand to capture the action. Emily Day and mom Winkie Mackay-Smith were on hand to cheer (and be cheerful) for the eight horses Day’s husband Jimmy brought to the Blue Ridge races. In the second race, Amateur/Novice Hurdle, over a mile and 7/8, trainer Jimmy Day (background) saddled the winner, Irish horse Dai Bando, with jockey Keri Brion in the irons. Dai Bando ended the race three and a half lengths behind the first horse to cross the finish line (Slaney Rock) who was then disqualified because he lost his lead pad during the race. Ahoy! Jockey Gerard Galligan aboard Curve of Stones, sported distinctive silks as they prepared to run in the Woodley Cup. They finished in third place, but we think their “look” is a winner! Jockey Victor Rodriguez gave Calvin Page’s horse Red Ginger some encouragement in the seventh race, Maiden Flat, over a mile and an eight on turf. The Woodley Cup, a Virginia-bred, one-mile flat race with a $2,000 purse, was exciting. The number 4 horse, Tubal (ridden by Carol-Ann Sloan) was kept off the lead that Hooping (Michael Mitchell up) assumed. But with three furlongs left, Tubal was able to step on the gas and the two dueled to the finish, where Tubal won by a head. (Ad deadline June 13th) http://www.horsetimes.net/Forms/HST_Classified.htm Times Highlights..................from p.47 Derby ran both Saturday and Sunday of the March 12th and 13thweekend. Competitors navigated their horses through a mix of stadium and crosscountry obstacles in each of the three rings. Between rings, riders were challenged with ditches, trakehners, banks, and hills, making every moment of the course exciting for riders and spectators alike. Moving forward through the month of March, Loch Moy Farm took a moment to pause from the horse show world to host The Grand National People Chase, sponsored by RockTape. The People Chase benefits the Yellow Ribbon Fund and their mission of aiding wounded veterans and their families. Despite a cool and damp day, around 100 participants came out to run the 5K course, covering the competition crosscountry course, lower schooling cross country course, and the hack paths connecting the two. Competitors had the option to go over, under, or around the equine cross-country obstacles along the course. Late season snow the day before the first Maryland Horse Trials Starter on a March 20 did not stop eventers. With faith in Loch Moy’s all weather-rings and carefully maintained crosscountry course, riders turned out to compete. The footing held up perfectly for over 250 rides from Introductory to Preliminary-Training, breaking number records for this early season show. Easter weekend at Loch Moy Farm was the backdrop of the first and second Sugarloaf Mountain Horse Show Series Hunter/Jumper Shows. Saturday and Sunday were packed with impeccably turned out pairs, Easter-egg hunts, and lots of excellent riding. Loch Moy Farm is thrilled to be the east coast pilot venue for Equus Foundation BEST Performance Program at a regional level. For a $20 taxdeducible donation, competitors receive an armband to be worn in the ring. Judges will select a horse and rider in each category who exhibits the best performance. The winners are chosen at the individual judge’s discretion. Dover Saddlery’s Adult Jumper Medal drew in riders new to the jumper ring, hoping to win coveted gift cards to the national tack store. On April 9th, Loch Moy hosted a Frederick Area Dressage Show and Loch Moy Farm Jumper Rounds for eventers. Riders turned out to hone their skills in both the dressage and jumper rings in a casual and educational environment. The day included exciting upper level dressage tests, gaited dressage, and western dressage, as well as quick and clever jump rounds. Every slot was full at the MDHT Starter #2 on April 10th, with a wait-list for competitors and every volunteer position filled. A bright, sunny day made for a smooth-running show with five dressage rings, two show-jump rings, and two cross-country courses. If you can’t ride, join in the fun as a volunteer! We are looking forward to our 2 July USEA Recognized weekends that will run FEI CIC2**/1*, Intermediate through Beginner Novice XC as well as Future Event Horse, Young Event Horse, and Adult Team Challenge. www.HorseTimes.net (540) 955-6219 Echo Equine Veterinary Service Nancy J.
