Presseinformation Press release Communiqué de presse Informazione stampa The Global Show for General Aviation April 9 – 12, 2014 Friedrichshafen, Germany 10/04/2014 Industry Meeting to kick off the international aviation exhibition AERO in Friedrichshafen - General aviation again records growth - Sales in Germany between two and three billion euros General Aviation Presents Itself As a Very Flexible Mode of Transport Friedrichshafen - General aviation is taking off again: The industry again recorded a slight increase in new aircraft registrations. Worldwide there are currently around 370,000 general aviation aircraft, with roughly 24,000 aircraft being operated in Germany. There are a total of 75,000 pilots in Germany, and worldwide the number of licensed pilots is around a million. Experts in Germany expect annual sales of two to three billion euros in general aviation. These numbers are expected to rise, according to industry representatives at the start of the international air show AERO on Wednesday at a press conference in Friedrichshafen. A forward-looking Europe that is growing together needs general aviation, said Rolf Dörpinghaus, expert and trade journalist. He spoke in favor of private transport in the air as an important, flexible, and discreet mode of transport for business. For him, flying is an efficient form of private or business travel, is indispensable for aerial work and rescue 2014 Messe Friedrichshafen GmbH Postfach 2080, 88010 Friedrichshafen Neue Messe 1, 88046 Friedrichshafen GERMANY www.messe-friedrichshafen.de 1/4 Presseabteilung Wolfgang Köhle Telefon: +49 7541 708-307 Telefax: +49 7541 708-331 E-Mail: presse@messe-fn.de Sitz der Gesellschaft: Friedrichshafen Amtsgericht Ulm, HRB 631179 Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender: Oberbürgermeister Andreas Brand Geschäftsführer: Klaus Wellmann Presseinformation Press release Communiqué de presse Informazione stampa The Global Show for General Aviation April 9 – 12, 2014 Friedrichshafen, Germany services, and is a demanding form of amateur and competitive sport. Aviation is also a breeding ground for new, especially sustainable technologies - such as electric flight - and represents an entry point for young people who are seeking professional fulfillment in aviation or who perhaps still need to discover it. Rolf Dörpinghaus described it as gratifying that AERO has once again managed to bring together almost the entire diversity and breadth of general aviation under one roof, from sport to business aviation. A positive picture of the situation is emerging for individual areas of general aviation, as Dr. Nicolas von Mende, Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Air Service AG, a company based in northern Germany, announced. His company is the largest partner in Europe for business jets from U.S. manufacturer Cessna; more than 300 aircraft are serviced and maintained by the company from Ganderkesee. 150 employees work for Atlas Air at four locations in Germany. It is primarily successful entrepreneurs who buy business jets. The industry is currently "optimistic,” said Mende. "For the segment of light jets, AERO is firmly established.” The entrepreneur also emphasized the importance of the aviation show. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Germany is the association of general aviation in Germany and represents the interests of pilots as well as aircraft owners. Worldwide 470,000 members are represented in the international AOPA. "Together with EASA and the national authorities, we as an association particularly need to get a handle on the general framework of our industry in order to exploit the potential of general aviation,” explained Dr. Michael Erb, AOPA Executive Director. "The registration provisions should be greatly modernized; they are from the 60s and are completely outdated for modern avionics,” added Dr. Erb. Wolfgang Müther, newly elected President of the German Aero Club (DAeC), was pleased with the slight increase in membership in the DAeC. Some 100,000 members are organized as sport pilots in the club. This shows that flying continues to be an exciting sport, he said. This year the highlight of the "e-flight expo,” which has been held for six years as part of AERO and exhibits the world of alternative propulsion systems, is the Volocopter, an electrically driven helicopter. Willi Tacke, the originator and organizer of the "e-flight-expo,” is convinced that the topic "absolutely has a future.” Ultralight aircraft in particular are ideal flight machines for being equipped with an electric motor, he said. AERO 2014 will run until Saturday, April 12, 2014. At the international aviation exhibition in Friedrichshafen, a total of 606 exhibitors from 35 countries are represented. The companies are exhibiting the entire product spectrum of general aviation. From business jets to ultralights and from aircraft maintenance and service to on-board electronics. The opening hours: Wednesday to Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM. For more information, visit: www.aero-expo.com.
