AERO, the global show for general aviation, from
April 20 to 23, 2016. The spectrum of general
aviation is broad: vintage gliders, single- and
multi-engine piston-driven airplanes, helicopters,
gyrocopters, turboprops and multi-engine jets will be
on display. Drones, new aircraft engines and avionics,
aviation accessories and services, as well as flight
school offerings round out the program. At the same
time, the special theme areas e-flight-expo, Avionics
Avenue, Engine Area and AERODrones RPAS EXPO
will feature new content. With the slogan "Be a

new impulses: "a technically-oriented trade show like the
AERO must also show how fascinating the subject of flight
is,” emphasized Roland Bosch. That is why encouraging the
next generation of pilots is also a major goal of the Messe
Friedrichshafen team. For this reason, for the first time,
entrance to the show will be free of charge for all visitors
under 16 years old, something which previously only
applied to young people under 14.
Powered aircraft
For the established producers of powered aircraft, a lot of
attention will be centered on traditional single and
twin-engine piston-driven aircraft. Markedly lower prices for
Avgas aviation fuel as a result of the plunge in oil prices are
making flying cheaper again. At the same time, low fuel
prices are also making it more affordable for new pilots to
learn to fly single-engine aircraft and for experienced pilots
to improve their credentials by earning multi-engine ratings,
which allow them to fly multi-engine aircraft.
New regulations from the European Aviation Safety Agency
(EASA) are also having a positive effect upon the
willingness of many pilots to rack up more flight hours. The
EASA recently made it easier for pilots to acquire an
instrument rating in Europe. Single engine aircraft up to 2
tonnes, which like ultralights are equipped with whole-plane
rescue systems, are also attracting more attention. Cirrus
Aircraft, which will be presenting its aircraft at the AERO, is
one of the vanguards of this safety philosophy. Other
manufacturers, such as Flight Design with their C4, or
Pipistrel with the Panthera, are also offering their new
aircraft with such whole-plane rescue systems standard.

The Global Show

April 20 – 23, 2016
Friedrichshafen, Germany
But all of the classic single and twin-engine aircraft from
manufacturers in the United States, Europe, China and
Australia will be present at Lake Constance.
Ultralights
Ultralights are the booming segment of general aviation.
This class includes powered aircraft with take-off weights of
up to 472 kilograms, but also gliders, gyrocopters and
helicopters. There is more innovation here than in any other
area of general aviation, not least because, next to gliding,
flying ultralights is the most affordable way to fly, both in
terms of operating costs and license costs. This year, there
are a lot of new 120 kg machines in the ultralight category
to discover. These powered single seaters are especially
inexpensive to acquire and maintain. In addition, the owner
may fly them without having to obtain a medical
certification.
One weight class above ultralights is the light sport aircraft
class, for which operating regulations in Europe and the
United States differ. In addition to the well-known models of
established manufacturers, several premieres in this class
will also be on display in Friedrichshafen. For example, a
Chinese company will be showing off its amphibious aircraft,
which has a maximum takeoff weight of 650 kg, for the
American light sport aircraft class. Germany is also bringing
out a number of new models: The northern German
producer Breezer Aircraft is presenting its new B600 model,
which was just certified as a European light sport aircraft by
the EASA a few weeks ago.

Gyrocopters are also counted as rotary wing aircraft. These
aircraft continue to enjoy high popularity within the
ultralight class, because they can operate using extremely
short takeoff and landing distances, can fly very slowly, and
can almost be used everywhere that helicopters can, but
with significantly lower procurement and operating costs.
The newest gyrocopter models will be presented at the
AERO, with open and closed cockpits, as single or double
seaters, and in side-by-side and tandem configurations.
Business Aviation
There are also new products to see among the jets. The
innovative HondaJet, with its unconventional nacelle
placement above the wing, has already gotten final
approval for operation in Europe. One of the first of these
aircraft to come off the assembly line will be presented at
the AERO. Another completely new business jet, which will
be displayed as a mockup at Lake Constance, is the
single-jet Vision SF50 from Cirrus Aircraft. Following
operating approval, which is expected shortly, it will be the
world’s first business jet to be delivered with a parachute
rescue system standard. A twin-engine Legacy 450 from
Brazil’s Embraer Executive Jets will make its German
premiere at the AERO. In addition, many more business jets
from respected manufacturers in North and South America
as well as Europe will be on display at Lake Constance.
Single or multi-engine aircraft with piston-driven engines
and turboprops can also be found among the business
aircraft on display in Friedrichshafen. Manufacturers of
economical single-engine turboprops, like Pilatus with the
PC-12, Daher with the TBM 900, Cessna with the Caravan,

Quest with the Kodiak and Piper with the M500, enjoyed
good sales figures in 2015. These aircraft will be in even
more demand in the near future, as the EASA is considering
allowing single-engine turboprops to fly in Europe in
accordance with instrument flight rules. This has not been
permitted to date.
Vintage gliders
In gliders, several aircraft provided by the Vintage Glider
Club will give everything a nostalgic touch, providing a nice
contrast to the modern super orchids, which are mainly
produced in Germany and Europe. Powered gilders will also
be a big draw again, as this form of flying is a one of the
most inexpensive ways to soar through the skies under
your own power.
e-flight-expo
The e-flight Expo, featuring alternative drive concepts, will
take place for the eight time, under the motto "Electrical,
Ecological, Evolutionary.” Electrically powered ultralights,
powered gliders and rotary wing aircraft will be its focus.
Several highly innovative machines will be the highlight of
2016. The most unconventional electrically powered aircraft
is the volocopter, which celebrated its premiere at the
AERO two years ago. In the meantime, this 18-rotor,
two-person aerial vehicle has undergone multiple
unmanned test flights, and flight testing using a test pilot is
scheduled to begin soon. Engineering conglomerate
Siemens will be showing no less than two vehicles that
feature the German company’s powerful electric drives: An
aerobatics aircraft with a 250-Kw engine and an ultralight,

also with a Siemens E-motor, with 60 Kw of power. A
mockup of a hybrid twin-electric engine aircraft will be the
big surprise at the e-flight-expo. It is based upon a
European manufacturer’s series production model. It has
also been announced that other innovative aircraft,
including an electrically-driven gyrocopter that made its
maiden flight last summer, will be on hand for the AERO.
The electric aircraft pioneers Yuneec, from China, not only
want to show off their well-known 430 model, but also
supply their electric motor to an eastern European ultralight
manufacturer, which will also present its prototype at the
AERO.
AERODrones RPAS EXPO
In cooperation with the UAV Dach, the German-speaking
association for unmanned aviation, the AERODrones RPAS
EXPO will show off the dynamic progress of the
development of civilian drones. The spectrum of
applications for remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS)
within general aviation continues to grow. Unmanned
aircraft with the most modern sensor and measurement
technology will be be on display.
Engine Area
In the Engine Area in Hall A5, modern aircraft engines and
accessories from various manufacturers will be presented,
whether they be piston-driven engines, turbines or hybrid
drives. Here it will be possible to see innovative engine
designs that are either especially efficient, light or quiet, or
a combination of all three. Electric drives will be one focal
point of the Engine Area this year. More and more of these

quiet engines are being specially developed for fixed wing
aircraft, as well as for gyrocopters and even helicopters.
Avionics Avenue
On Avionics Avenue, the AERO will show off the latest
developments and equipment for flight control, navigation,
collision warning and flight planning for airplanes and
helicopters. Avionics Avenue is likely to experience an
additional boost in demand thanks to recent changes by the
EASA that make instrument certification training in Europe
easier. At the same time, the rapidly approaching
December 31, 2017 deadline to switch radio equipment
over to 8.33 kHz channel spacing in VFR operations will also
generate increasing revenues for avionics manufacturers.
Aviation and Pilots Competence Center
The Aviation and Pilots Competence Center is aimed not
just at pilots, but at everyone interested in aviation who
would like to become a pilot. Information and offers from
flight schools are available at the center, which also serves
as a point of contact to government agencies and interest
groups. Under the slogan "Be a pilot”, visitors to the AERO
can get information about especially inexpensive flight
training options, such as ultralight aircraft licenses, glider
training starting for ages 14 and above, or training in the
new ultralight helicopter category which is expected to be
created in Germany.

workshops on current aviation topics will be take place
during the AERO Conferences. Experts from pilots
associations, government authorities and the
manufacturers associations GAMA and LAMA as well as
many general aviation groups will discuss and provide
information about policy frameworks, the current state of
aviation, and opportunities for improvement. UAV Dach, the
German association for unmanned vehicles, continues to
strengthen their participation in the show. A special
highlight is likely to be Mark Moore from America’s National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), who will
provide information about NASA’s so-called X-Plane
program at the AERO conferences. In this research program,
a general aviation aircraft is being tested with several
electric motors attached directly to its wing. Another
high-ranking speaker from the United States will be Earl
Lawrence, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration’s
(FAA) drone section. He will speak on the FAA’s approach to
integrating drones into US aviation traffic in the years to
come.
Flying to the AERO
For visitors who wish to fly themselves to the AERO in 2016,
an online-based slot assignment procedure for allocating
landing slots at Friedrichshafen Airport will again be used.
Information on this process will be available starting in early
April at https://aero-ppr.fly-away.de For pilots of ultralights
and powered gliders, the gilder airfield at Markdorf will be
available as a slot-free alternative during the AERO.
Information is available at www.sfg-markdorf.de/www/.
From there, a shuttle bus will take visitors to the AERO.
