athletics carnival 2014 - Beaudesert State High School
Volume 19
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2014
This year’s athletics carnival at Beaudesert
State High School was a huge success, with record
numbers of competitors across both days.
Between students dressing up as everything
from Transformers to Barbie dolls and recordbreaking athletes, there was a wonderful
atmosphere around the carnival.
Cunningham House was overall champions,
327 points ahead of Leichhardt House. Fraser and
Kennedy finished 3rd and 4th respectively.
Just as dominant, was James Lohmann’s
performance in the Beaudesert Gift.
A massive thank you is extended to all of the
incredible BSHS staff and students who made this
year’s carnival happen!
Beaudesert State High School then sent 91 of
its best athletes to compete at the Pacific District
Championships. We finished 2nd behind
Windaroo Valley SHS by the narrowest of margins
– only 3.29 points. So close!
Then, 43 students represented the school at
South Coast trials. Proudly, a number of these
students have been selected to attend the State
Championships which will be held early next
term. We wish all of these athletes well as they
progress to the highest level of competition.
Age Champions were:
13 Boys – Mathew Stockham
13 Girls – Kierston Cuskelly
14 Boys – Ryan Hanser
14 Girls – Riley Day
15 Boys – Eamon Parkins
15 Girls – Caitlyn Hester
16 Boys – Elijah Allan
16 Girls – Shanyn Andersen
Open Boys – Raymond Cordingley
Open Girls – Natasha Kirchner

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Wow! What a term it has been at Beaudesert State High School…
• 13 of our very talented students performed in this year’s “Creative
Generation: State Schools On-Stage” at the Brisbane Exhibition
and Convention Centre.
• The Show Team competed in a number of cattle leading
competitions. In addition, one of our animals received Reserve
Champion in the carcass competition at the Ekka.
• The first intake of students began studying Certificate 2 in
Automotive Vocational Preparation in our brand new, $750k,
Trade Training Centre.
• Our Debating Teams finished 1st in the Senior Division, and 2nd
in the Junior Division of the 2014 Enable Debating Competition.
• Our Ski Trip (to Thredbo), Extension Science Trip (to Heron
Island), and our biennial trip to Japan were all hugely popular and
extremely successful.
• Year 10 Business Studies classes effectively organised our school’s
second World X Day Activities.
• Our school placed second in the Pacific District Athletics
Carnival, finishing only three points behind the winners.
• The finals of Beauy’s Got Talent were held, with prizes given in
both the Senior and Junior Divisions as well as a People’s Choice
Award.
Early
Childhood
Studies
As a part of their studies
this term, students were
required to visit playgrounds
and assess the suitability of the
equipment for certain age
groups and the levels of safety.
• Our HPV [human powered vehicle] Team was formed.
• 2 students were named as winners in their respective categories at
the Regional School-based Apprenticeship and Traineeship
Awards, while 2 others were finalists. In addition, our school was
runner-up in the SAT School of the Year.
• Our school set a world record for the most number of students
simultaneously popping bubble wrap.
• Most importantly, our students demonstrated their commitment
to classroom learning:
Behaviour
Effort
Achievement
87.0%
95.9%
89.8%
% of students gaining C or higher on Semester 1 Reporting 2014
These are just a snippet of the many wonderful activities,
opportunities and achievements at Beaudesert State High School.
Every day, and in many ways, we emphasise and promote in all
students the notion of “Personal Best” – in learning, in engagement,
and in relationships.
Until next time,

OUT & ABOUT
Brisbane Law
Courts
Dressed to impressed, Year 11
Legal Studies students visited the
Brisbane Law Courts recently. The
purpose of this excursion was to
provide the students, who have been
studying a unit of work on Criminal
Law, with a snapshot of the
processes involved when justice is
being restored so that society can
function effectively.
Students had the option of visiting the District or Supreme Courts and view cases ranging from drug
possession and trafficking to sexual assault and murder. A group of students were also fortunate enough to have a
question and answer session with a Crown Prosecutor which provided the students with a valuable insight into
work “behind the scenes” for a trial.
Many students were fortunate enough to witness how the “long arm of the law” is enforced when sentencing is
handed down by a Judge. This then allowed the students to put themselves in the shoes of the Judge and also the
victim’s family by discussing the facts and evidence of the cases to provide their own justified verdict.
All students walked away from the excursion with an appreciation of the processes, personnel, traditions and
complexity of our legal system in action.
Hitting the Slopes at Thredbo
After a long bus ride to the snow, we had a week of absolutely
perfect conditions. Beautiful blue skies, no wind, and great snow
cover. The skiers and boarders had a blast in the fantastic
conditions, conquering any fears, hitting the jumps, and mastering
the slopes. A fun time was had by all during our awesome week at
the snow. It even snowed for us in Jindabyne!
OUT & ABOUT
Creative Generation
State Schools Onstage celebrated its 10th
Anniversary this year, with four arena-style shows
staged at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition
Centre, South Bank in July. This year, some of the
most talented dancers, singers and musicians from
Queensland state schools came together to stage one of
the state's largest performing arts events including
Beaudesert State High School dancers Sharnae Aming,
Skylah Hardke and musicians Damon Robinson and Rebecca Cahill. Creative Generation
aims to mentor and foster the next generation of performers and provides opportunities for
them to work with and learn from professional artists. Well done to our performers!
Gold Coast Eisteddfod
In August, the Beaudesert State High School Dance Team competed at the Gold Coast Dance
Eisteddfod. Students danced in the Contemporary, Hip-Hop and Jazz sections against over 20
other schools from the region. Whilst all the whole
team danced exceptionally well, the Mover’s
Contemporary group, ‘What the Water Gave Me’
succeeded in placing with a
Highly Commended in their
section. Well done to Dance
Team for your commitment
to rehearsals and
representing the school
with pride.
Early Childhood Work Experience
Year 11 and 12 Early Childhood students recently completed a
three-day work experience block. The students thoroughly enjoyed
their interaction with the children and the fantastic assistance and
guidance received
from their
supervisors.
The students
and teachers
would like to
thank all centres,
kindergartens
and schools
involved for the
support and
assistance
provided during
the program.
Vicky Wilson Cup
Beaudesert State High School
participated in the 2014 Vicky
Wilson Cup, recently held at the
Runaway Bay Indoor Sports
Stadium.
The competition was
extremely tough but the girls took
to the courts and played their
hearts out. A big thank you to all
of the team for their fantastic
efforts on the day!
Congratulations to Taylor
Cole, who was voted Most
Valuable Player on the day by the
team. Congratulations also to
Emma Mahoney, who was voted
Most Improved Player.

BEAUY’S GOT TALENT
This year, over 20 students dazzled the audience and
judges during auditions for Beauy’s Got Talent. Students
from across all year levels showcased their talents in front of
capacity crowds. The list was painstakingly whittled down to
10 and then separated into Junior and Senior sections for the
Finals, held on Friday 22nd August. With such amazing
talent, it wasn’t an easy task to narrow the 10 finalists to 3
however; The Judge’s Choice Awards went to:
Junior: Avelyn Morgan (Year 9) who performed “Read All
About It” by Emeli Sande
Senior: Tiffany Kuiper (Year 11) who lifted
the roof belting out “Rise of the Phoenix” by
Conchita
Clearly a crowd favourite, The People’s
Choice Award went to: Kyle “K-Fent” Fenton
(Year 12) who rapped his way into the crowd’s
hearts with “What Is
It?” by Baby Bash &
Sean Kingston.
Money raised from the auditions and finals will be used
by the school’s Student Representative Council. Special
mention must go to our judges, Ms Bradbury and Ms Jensen,
and our “roadies” Mr Hyam and Mr Cusworth.
Japanese
Home Stay!
Our school excitedly
hosted 15 Japanese
students for a Homestay
Program. Eager families
volunteered to look after,
befriend, teach and care
for their English-studying
Japanese student who
decided to take part in
this exchange program
during their summer holidays in Japan to learn
more English and learn about our culture. Many
new friendships were forged and a great time was
had by all! The Japanese students were particularly
impressed by the countryside and enjoyed being
able to see our way of life here in Beaudesert. A big
thank you to the families, students and teachers
who helped to make this visit a truly memorable
experience for our Japanese visitors!
A Taste of High School
In preparing for high school in 2015, a number of lovely
year 7 students recently spent some time sampling classes at
Beaudesert State High School.
Home Economics was just one of the classes they visited.
They received some very good instruction and help from our
Year 11 students on how to make cookies.

Guiness World Record Attempt
Beaudesert State High School students made an attempt at
having the most people continuously popping bubble wrap for
two minutes. This record attempt was researched and
organised by our fantastic school captains, Lachie Hyam and
Chloe Henare, who wanted to create an event that got the
whole school involved. They successfully achieved this with
1119 students and staff participating in the attempt, popping
200m2 of bubble wrap. In attendance as our expert witnesses,
we would like to thank Mayor John Brent, Councillor Jennifer
Saunders, Constable Noel Kerger and Constable Mark Gamer.
