a Clouds Hill Recordings Portfolio August 2015 Welcome to Clouds Hill Recordings 2 www.cloudshillrecordings.com The Concept of Clouds Hill Recordings The Clouds Hill Recordings studio occupies a total area of 400 m² and offers unique, carefully selected equipment which will satisfy the highest technical demands for all phases of analog and digital music production and post-production. The concept of Clouds Hill Recordings is to create an inspiring setting and creative working atmosphere for musicians from around the world who care about working with the highest quality technical equipment. The 2 × studio rooms guarantee superb acoustic quality, thanks to a painstaking and unique design, specific to Clouds Hill Recordings, from the professional acoustic expertise of the company Taubert & Ruhe; who were recently commissioned as consultants for Hamburg’s Philharmonic Hall (the Elbphilharmonie). We do our utmost to make our guests as comfortable as possible both in the studio as well as in the 250 m² artist apartment, which is just one story downstairs from the studio complex. It is carefully designed and furnished with a fully equipped kitchen, bathrooms, 6 separated bedrooms, a living room with a TV and a small library and a unique view of the Elbe River landscape. 3 About Clouds Hill Recordings www.cloudshillrecordings.com The person behind Clouds Hill Recordings At the age of only 32, Johann Scheerer, the owner of Clouds Hill Recordings, brought his dream to life. Being an artist in his own right, he is a musician, songwriter, producer & engineer. Johann first started to write & produce music at the age of 17, using an 8-track mini disc recorder. Back then he found it quite challenging working in analog: “8-track mini disc was a very strange format for me. It was terrible to handle & it marked the major transition from analog to digital recording. However I’d spend sleepless nights working around the difficulties. In my opinion analog tape offers the best chance and sound for recordings to survive in the future.” Nowadays, Johann often compares producing music to mountaineering: “You study it a lot, you’re maybe interested in special techniques and you start the journey well equipped. But when it comes down to face reality, you have to improvise to achieve the results you want.” Johann is a skilful and effective counterbalance to strong-minded artists and designs parameters in which to work efficiently. He loves to evolve songs from scratch with raw talented writers or musicians and is always conscious of developing their talent and their songs. This way of working is further supported by making full use of the abundant resources at Clouds Hill Recordings. 4 About Clouds Hill Recordings www.cloudshillrecordings.com Recently at Clouds Hill Recordings In the last 12 months the following artists have worked with Johann and or recorded at Clouds Hill Recordings: Albert Hammond Jr. Bosnian Rainbows Faust Gallon Drunk James Johnston Omar Rodríguez-López Pete Doherty From Bosnian Rainbows to Faust, every artist has had their own vision of how they would like to sound and all have chosen Johann (as producer) or Clouds Hill Recordings (as the Studio) to realize it. Johann is an extraordinary character who provides strong leadership and vision for someone so young. There is no denying his prolific talents to produce the right sound and record in 2015. 5 About Clouds Hill Recordings www.cloudshillrecordings.com Studio 1 The room set up for Studio 1 is as follows: NEVE Suite Recording Room 1 Factsheet • • • • • 86 m² Recording Room 13 m² Booth 56 m² Control Room Studer A820 24-Track Tape Machine Neve 8068 Console Studio 1 consists of an 86 m² recording room (including a 13 m² booth) and a 56 m² control room with a Studer A820 24-track tape machine and a Neve 8068 console which was commissioned by Sir George Martin and manufactured by Rupert Neve in 1978. Nisennenmondai formed in the late ’90s and took their name from the Japanese translation of the then-current phrase “Y2K bug”. The band takes as much inspiration from the cool kids at school as from experimentalists like This Heat, Pop Group, Sonic Youth, DNA, and Neu!. Watch Nisennenmondai Live At Clouds Hill: g http://play.clouds-hill.com 24 Live At Clouds Hill Live At Clouds Hill – The irreversibility of the moment Johann, over the last 8 years has built Clouds Hill Recordings into one of the worlds finest & best equipped recording studios. Furthermore Johann has also established the series Live At Clouds Hill. The idea behind Live at Clouds Hill is extremely simple. Johann Scheerer invites an artist to his recording studio. The artist performs in front of a small live audience a maximum 64-minute long set (the length of 2 × analog tapes). The performance will be recorded live, simultaneously mixed and straight away sent off for mastering and vinyl manufacturing. The artists, as well as Johann (in the role of producer & engineer) together with live audience are forced to focus on the uniqueness of the present, because the final release on vinyl is irreversible. Many major record & management companies have used Clouds Hill Recordings for intimate showcases and record release parties.
